I just got my first splitter. It was built by an old timer and his widowed wife had a hard time selling it to me. It has a great home now and I plan to take very good care of it. Something very satisfying about watching these vids. Stay safe!
So it took me about 10 minutes to realise I needed a table when I first started making my own firewood. However, after watching lots of videos on this subject, I'd thought I'd share this as well; Most people throw the split wood on the ground... which not only creates one more labor intense step in the process, but also create unnecessary strain on your back and take more time. I made a side table next to the splitter where a stack the newly splitted wood. This way I can easily grab what I can carry and move it to its stack in the wood shed or onto a trailer without ever bending my back
I just bought a box store splitter and it has the table it's very helpful. This is a big upgrade for me.
I loaned out my splitter about 20 yrs ago, to an old friend and coworker, it was brand new. It was returned with a table/wings on each side the he had fabricated and installed, best loaner deal I ever got, I didn't need to loan it out to him again.....he liked mine so much he went out and bought his own.

hey Mike, Just purchased a new 30 ton Black Diamond log splitter here in Canada, and they included the log catcher now. Great channel, keep up the great work.
Mike we love you and need you around for many years......NEVER NEVER jerk pull start a chain saw. Always set a chainsaw on the ground when starting.......Number one reason for injury of chainsaw users is knee cap injury during jerk pull starting. Love your videos. God bless.

Just bought the tray from Tractor Supply for my log splitter I bought from L&M bolted right on most definitely yes you need one
I put one on each side. Great for larger logs. Split in half, hold one side close while you split the far piece again or twice more. Saves the back.
I did the same thing and make the kiddos load it up and I split more longer
Amen, Mike! I had my splitter for 15 years before I put two small wings on it this season. It's sped up my splitting time by at least 4X! HIGHLY recommended!

You are absolutely right in that every splitter needs a table.
I made my own table out of scrap steel I had laying around.
Word of advice for others who make their own: DON'T FORGET TO ADD OFFSET! (To accommodate for the tire when in vertical position). Fortunately, I always use my spitter in horizontal position; otherwise I would have to take table off as it hits tire. (Notice Mikes' at the 3:50 mark how the 2 main frames offset upwards).
You can’t beat “MICROspikes” for foot traction on ice. Easy on/off. Worth every cent.

Boy what a good price on that splitter, here in Northern California a 25 ton splitter would have been 400-500 dollars more in 2018 when that video was made! A long time ago, 10-15 years ago I bought a used "Northern tool" 20 ton splitter for $750.00 and thought it was a good deal. The 5.5 HP Briggs wore out on it so I put on a Honda knock off 6.5 HP motor from Harbor Freight and it worked great. it started first or second pull and just sipped gas. Unlike the newer motors this one I had control of the throttle and usually ran it at a fast idle. I sure could have used a table like that! Thanks for the great video. I knew what you were doing on the first cut putting wood chips on the ice.
My splitter came from Tractor supply bought the side table for it and love it!

I love the coloring in that wood. Here in Idaho we cut up a lot of lodge pole pine and every once in a while you will get a blue coloring in the wood and when you do it has the best smell. For me fresh cut wood is one of my favorite smells .

Great video! I would get a bottle of some type of oil, It can even be waste oil from an oil change and oil the top of the splitter that the ram slides on. it helps keep the metal on metal friction down and unneccesary wear! I do that to mine and have no issues! You dont have to drown it, just enough every so often to coat!
MIke try using your splitter in the vertical configuration. I take one block and use it as my seat then take all the remaining blocks and stage them along the side. No need for the table and no sore back. Try it ! I really enjoy your channel. Thanks
What broke on the 5 year old HUSKEE 22 Ton log splitter? You seemed perfectly happy and said it was very dependable started in the first pull. Was the new splitter free for 2 years like the 3 tractors are free? Are you good at selling Eskimos ice as well?
I made my own but made it longer so it also protects the motor from logs falling down and destroying components on it.
I love the smell of freshly-split Red Oak in the morning!!

Just picked up a 40 ton County line log splitter with a 9.5 second cycle time and 25gpm pump. It came with the table so that was a big plus! Wouldn't change anything about it!
Just picked up a Yardmax 25 Ton with Briggs engine for $1K...couldn't be happier with the build quality. Highly recommend.
Very nice Black Diamond wood splitter Mike our first wood splitter came from Allis chalmers it was a bachtold 3hp round 35 or 40 years ago and 3 family used to to split wood it still works great but the valve leaks but and no one makes them no more but we have had 3 to 4 foot wide stuff on it but the down side it was like 6 " off the ground but was nice doing big pieces you could just roll them on ! looked at Black Diamond around 2 years ago they are nice but when i went to buy the 35 ton they could not make up there mind if it was with or without the oil so sad to say i got a 35 ton dirty hand tools log splitter with oil but they are all good splitters and yes it is nice to have the table so you dont have to keep picking up the wood and i think it helps to protect the engine too ! take care Curt :-)
Mike, I think your channel is great! You are doing what we do only you have many more toys especially since your connection with RK. That being said your practical descriptions are great. I enjoy watching. Keep clapping your hands!
I would recommend that you wear a set of chaps while using your chain saw! Safety first and you are a model for alot of us landowners with woodlots.
BTW your video editing is awesome, I especially liked the tractor baliet!

I went picked one up for my log splitter after seeing your video and it was worth every bit of the $50 made it so much nicer not having walk around and picking up the piece that falls or trying to hold up one piece while trying to split the other
Got a 28 ton from our local Southern States store. Built a hydraulic lift for it, lift doubles as a table when lifted up. Bad knee keeps me from kneeling to use a vertical splitter, don’t want to lift some of the big rounds I split. Some are 20 inches and up in diameter.
Good video. Compelled to share. For the money, someone supplying themselves ( & a few families as I do ) the Harbor Frieght splitter is the best. Comes with removal rack shelves both sides & is a 2 way split. I recently added a drop on 4 way adapter that is designed for 2 way splitters. I'm breaking knotty White Oak the size of a Silverado tire no problem. It least as a 20ton.. but it acts like a 30 ton. The only piece I have seen cause it problems. A piece of twisted cedar, turns out a hefty dog chain had been wrapped around it and the tree engulfed it as it grew. After several tries, I went to shaving the sides off and that's when I found the chain.

Love your videos Mike! All the way from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada ! I purchased the same unit from Peavy Mart which is Rural King in US. Great unit. Built my own 20" log shelf and love the tilt ram feature. A real back saver! Split 6 cords since spring and my wife loves it! I do the hard work and she splits! Mine came with the Kohler engine and 1 pull to start! For tractor have a JD and hunting cart to haul and stack. often hard work, but great escape from city living! Gotta Love country living!
Couldn't agree more. I had the same splitter for a year before I finally had enough of walking around the other side. Ordered the same catcher and what a difference!
I've got a timber wolf , has a log lift 4 way wedge table great and log cradle. The grate filters out all the bark and junk perfect hight for wheelbarrow.
That is a good log splitter. The Wolf Ridge is a step up for sure.

Great vid, Nice Splitter ,i have a few splitters 25 ton country line with 11 sec cycle , i do 75-80 cords a yr by myself and the Bobcat 863 with a grapple attachment, Grant it i get my wood for free from a few tree company's that need a place to drop the wood ;) But i concur on the side table ,what a back saver it is a must have at 48 ys of age , i wish i had one 10 yrs ago !!
I use mine in the vertical position w/ a chair next to it, mainly because 4ft logs are too heavy to lift.. I have the log splitter slightly downhill so I can roll the wood to it.. I back my trailer up, throw the pieces on and when full I go and stack them..
That table is pretty sweet something else that is good having around when popin blocks is a small hatchet cut the stringy fibers on top of those pieces

I agree totally. The other characteristic i use to judge splitters is how high the stand when horizontal. I've used a low one for years and it requires a lot more bending than i like. Used my car ramps and the 3pt hitch to raise it. Both yours are nice and tall.

oh and for traction i use ashes from my woodstove , a coffee can full goes a very long way. gets traction great for feet and for wheels even on pure ice.

Here's a trite back saver, try putting splinter on top car ramps so it raises it up, to waist level, be well be safe

All my years growing up in central MN, I don't think I ever recall intentionally making sawdust for traction purposes (or even seeing other do it)..... It's actually not a bad idea, might need to remember it if I ever have to deal with working on snow & ice again. Especially since I'm not sure that I'd be quite as sure-footed, and cautious about walking as I used to be (growing up having to work on snow and ice definitely results in a different perspective/behavior on a lot of things)

That saw dust trick was a cool idea so that you would not fall. With that bigger tractor and grapple loader you should set up splitting station to help with productivity. The less you handle it the better, but I know you like stacking it also!
Hey Mike, I have a 22 ton Dirty Hands splitter. With a 4 way wedge works great on my Doug Fir and alder up here in Oregon I use it to split the big rounds,so that I can lift what's left and split by hand it's great exercise. I thought about getting a table but I'm splitting by hand since last year. Keep up the great videos!✌🏻️

My partner bought our hydraulic log splitter used like new from Lowes or Home Depot. They often sell the ones they rent out cheap. We decided to start our own Firewood/BBQ Wood side hustle & it's a ton of work but great for getting outdoors & definitely getting your exercise! Most sell for $1 a stick, we sell for .60c a stick & we split 18" length & wide splits for our customers. We just advertised on FB & in our area there's really no one else selling good seasoned Oak or Pecan. I am looking into a 4 way splitter wedge for our 25 ton splitter.. Our splitter came with a catch type table on each side of the i-beam, so when ya split the 2 1/2's just fall over & stay in place instead of on the ground or on your feet! lol. I would say it's a hell of way to make extra cash & it's almost too much hard work for such little return. However, were South of Houston & not much firewood is needed here
Mike, I split and stack as I go in the same spot. It eliminates a big step in picking it up again and then moving it to your stacks. Just wondering why you do it your way. I'm still using my 25 ton MTD splitter that I bought 17? years ago. Like you, it took me a few years to realize that a table/tray was the way to go. Keep em coming Mike.

I added gravel to the area I split. Still makes a mess but less mud. BTW, this weekend, I'm renting a man lift like the one you had. Gonna do a little tree trimming.
I put a 5 gallon bucket next to my 35 ton husky when splitting. I put those little slivers that come off during splitting in the bucket. They make excellent kindling and I have less to clean up after.

Thanks Mike. Once again I'm late to the party here. By sheer coincidence I purchased a pair of these tables, ( Made In China ) through TSC ( Tractor Supply Co ) over in Littleton, NH just yesterday, ( 3/6/19 ). The tables are built to fit the CountyLine 25 ton, 2018 & newer splitters. I have a 2003 Brave, Iron & Oak 20 ton traditional splitter that did not come with tables or wedge pads. My I-beam is not pre drilled for these absolutely necessary units. I had them put my name on them & put them aside for me to have a look at them 1st. I will drill my own 1/2 " holes at 11 1/8" on center, sandwich them together with longer shoulder bolts, flats, locks & nuts, done... Your table looks identical to mine. I paid a tad more at $59.99 ea. as I did see the Black Diamonds at $39.99 ea. through the Rural King website, but I really wanted to put my hands on them first, TSC stocked them, so I made the purchase, ( no sales tax or shipping ). I was pleasantly surprised on the gauge of the steel ( heavy duty ) & painted an oil based black.
My units are SKU # 1291697 or part # YTL - 008-122...
Once the weather warms up a bit here in the highlands of VT, I will drill holes & permanently mount these tables.

About two years ago, I bought a 'Dirty Hand Tools' 28 ton splitter...best investment I've ever made! I did get the side table with it.
I have an upright logspliter that go's on my Kubota, and that could do with a bigger base so you've got me thinking now!
I have the same exact splitter.
You will need to swab the gibs on the slide with a heavy coat of HP grease.
With the cylinder retracted, you have a few inches of the gibs on the slide exposed. Dap a heavy dose ever use or it will start galling badly.

So glad I found your channel Mike....I've been binge watching, since you cover so many things I'm interested in. Glad your channel is way more about content, instead of parading your lovely wife around in her bikini and using click bate to attract some viewers, like some other channels do. I think you're going to do well, just doing what you're doing and the way you present it.
Besides the shelf you should defiantly try a 4way wedge on that splitter. You can find a quick attachment for it. Save you some time.

Pre219 those 4 way wedges as for splitters where the wedge is stationary. Mike's splitters wedge is mounted to the hydraulic ram so the 4 way add-on wouldnt work
Hello, the Brest for me it's a Split Fire log splitter with dual split on a mini excavator. The work is more efficient and quiet 😀👌. But felicitation for your job !
Mine came with a small tray type holder but I added to it so I could put more pcs on it at once I also put mine up on car ramps to get it taller as I’m over 6ft tall
Oh my gosh. My family and I have been splitting wood for at least 10 years and even I have no idea how many times we split a log in half only to pick a side up off the ground. That table really looks like a back saver and we also need a taller log splitter.
I always split with my log splitter in the vertical position. I sit on a stool and roll the pieces in. Then after I split them, just throw them right into my trailer. Do you like one way or the other better?

You should grease the 2 channels the wedge slides down on to prevent wear. Some use grease. I use bar oil like I use in my chain saw.
Yes, I noticed the table not long ago on your Husky. The table is a great idea. Something else I noticed, you've sold, used, or both a lot of fire wood. Your fire wood wall looks very depleted. I see what you mean by you having some catching up to do. It has been a cold winter this year.

Nice video. We just got one from Lowes its a dirty hand tools. Did you have to cycle the cylinder and add hydraulic fluid to yours the first time?
Mike - how are you liking the black diamond splitter vs. the huskee -- hows the briggs engine versus say a Honda engine in your opinion?

Just curious what you do with the pallet when it’s full .... do you shrink wrap it or just carry it as is with forks?
Did you consider the splitters that have the piston under the rail, and you can spilt wood in bothe directions?
Mike, Next time you are out at the log splitter, can you measure the bolt center where the catch table mounts? We ended up picking up a good used Huskee (sorry Rural King) and I'm wondering if the one they sell will fit it. Thanks, Bryon

This popped up so I thought I would watch it. The log splitter surely has been upgraded since this video.
I made 2 tables, a log lift that would lift 5 pcs your size at once and they feed to the boom as one passes thru the wedge. I also run a 4 way wedge on every pc that is between 12 and 20 inch dia. Then off the table and it is pushed into a hopper that goes into a hay elevator i converted for firewood straight into trailer, truck, barn, pile etc. Had splitter since 81 and did it the hard way 30 yrs , then as i got older, smarter, and had more skills like engineer, fabrication, welding, etc, i now work smarter, not harder. Oh, and best of all, we now split 3 truck loads in 1 day which never happened before. Wed always do 2 loads and it'd be dark and wed be beat, now, we do 3 loads b4 dark and not a bit tired. The lift, table and elevator combo lets us split a load in 45 mins flat which used to be 1.5 hrs so basically our 3rd load is free now. Its amazing how much wasted time and wearing a body out happens when you have to throw each piece of wood 10 to 12 ft into a truck bed. These days, we dont touch the wood after its on the lift!!!

I have the same splitter and have found a table for the side but it's much smaller as it was a universal. Is that the one actually made for it the mounts into the factory holes?
Hey man just looking for your opinion. I always split in the vertical position, so my big rounds are ground ridden. Why do so many people split horizontally? I feel like im very fast vertically, but I havnt tried it horizontally. Please let me know!

i new you were going two say table... it truly makes it so much easier no joke..just having the log right there makes it so much faster and easier..

I've split 32 inch Red Oak with my Black Diamond tilted up and I have a table like that and a shorter one on the operator's side. No problem's whatsoever.

I have a vertical log splitter that I bought in 89 still works great, and I don't have to lift up those heavy sticks.
Some people like splitting vertical and some horizontal. It hurst my back splitting vertical, standing horizontal no problem

Gotta love splitting red oak...it's about all I split...by hand...Also, seems like there should be a way to put hinges on that shelf so you don't have to keep installing and taking apart...just flip over for travel and flip out for usage...
I have a wood splitter split 30 face cord for my self every yr plus 20 face cord for my dad been that way the last ten yrs when I got it new never had a use for a table those size blocks we only split in half
Hemlock and Poplar logs are usually much bigger in diameter, will it spit them as well?
i can't understand why most connercial and diy log splitters push the log over the wedge then have to pick large pieces off the ground to resplit my 18 ton diy splitter pushes wedge through log and pieces stay on table for resplitting or throw into container like yours good video thanx
My log splitter came with a table... I never installed it. The rental I used before buying one had a table, but it did not go vertical; mine does. Splitting horizontally is just dumb. I get a big round to sit on, and I’m sitting comfortably for most of the job. I’ll sell you my never used table though.
Doe your log splitter have a support underneath? When I split heavy pieces, it tips backwards.
You might think about pallet forks for your tractor -- gerry-rig up sides on your pallets. I stack/pile (not as neatly as you do) right on the pallet and then set them into place for storage. During the winter, I use the forks to retrieve a pallet and set it next to my outdoor wood burning furnace.
Mike, , the side table IS the trick, watched this vid twice cause the music you added when you were splitting, if you play this in the head set, it is a near motivational piece.
I just bought that same table for my Countyline 25ton Splitter. Much heavier than the older style table. Local TSC had it for $49. If I had a RK closer Id probably have went there to get one. I need to head downstate to check the place out. Great tip with the wood chips for traction. Another great video Mike!!
I have the same splitter except it's Lumberjack branded with Kohler engine. I don't think it has anything to do with being new, it just has a faster cycle time. It's just the right height for me also to trap the round between one hand and my hip and rotate and split certain sized full rounds or larger half rounds that further improves my efficiency. I split at least 80 cords in a year with it and it keeps me hopping, no issues except the Kohler is a bear to start in the cold (under 20 degrees). I don't have a table but since I almost always split in the same spot, I have the back of the Gator or trailer right there to set a half round on while taking care of the other one, so I am definitely using something which serves the same purpose.
I looking for a log splitter. what is your opinion of the wolf ridge 28 pro? It's one model down from yours. I don't plan on selling any wood so i'm wondering if the 28 pro is more than I need. Thoughts?

Okay.....The guy that operates my log splitter (not my husband or boyfriend) by the way, will not operate it in the horizontal position. He insists on putting the splitter in the vertical position, pulls up an old folding metal chair and rolls each piece of wood over into position(it's all stacked next to him). He says this way he doesn't have to bend over each time and lift a log up onto the splitter(most of the logs are 12-16" in diameter and red and white oak, very heavy). I do see his point but is it okay to always operate the splitter in the vertical position? Any thoughts?

Wondering what your thoughts are on manual, hydraulic splitters. I live in an are were gas can run out quickly during a storm or other crisis. I was thinking having a back up manual, crank splitter may work. I would love to hear your thoughts.
