Materials such as gold and platinum-plated ceramic are used throughout for maximum conductivity and performance, but all those bells and whistles don't come cheap. The Orpheus will set you back $50,000.

You're right in that the words are not precise, but you can use them to compare other headphones to this one. He didn't even say there is "nothing like this pair of headphones" like you did. The only words he used to judge them were "you will PROBABLY be happy with the results", they sound "incredible"(for $30,000 they better), they pick up tones that other headphones don't (really like which ones?), and that songs sound "the best they've sounded"(compared to what?). But, when considering he never mentions the headphones he uses regularly, he could very well be comparing them to the earbuds that came with his iphone. He also says " i can't tell you if they are $50,000 dollars good" , and "he doesn't know if he would shell out the money for these". What can you tell me!? Ok Ok well maybe he just lacks experience. However, even still, there ARE plenty of objective test he could use to compare them with other headphones, i think he dropped the ball. You can review an F1 car btw. Talk about the new features, give 0-60 speeds, or maybe talk about overall handling. You can also compare those components to cars of similar price points. If its the most expensive? Compare them to the cars just under those and say whether or not the difference in price justifies the cost. If you're lost, then talk to experts. He's a journalist, so he needed to get the scoop, and he didn't get it.

Jude said it has a sound distortion rating of 0.01%, which is the lowest for sound reproduction mediums of this type. This fact came from Senheiser. Not that hard. I don't need to feel how the headphones sound from his description, i just need a qualification of some sort. I understand the difficulty in describing intangibles. But, i don't need a perfect description. I just need some sort of judgement and he gave a nothing review. He could have literally asked the people in the room, "what statistic are you most proud of" and he would have gotten a similar factoid. Jude gave a great review btw.

Lifelong technology and audio enthusiast here. I haven't ever examined or listened to the Sennheiser Orpheus now priced at $60,000. First impression is this might very well be an excellent tube amplifier and headphones, but its crazily overpriced. There are some amazing sounding audiophile headphones available in the $2,000 to $5,000 price range, which of course need to be driven by high fidelity audio equipment, not portable electronics.
These should be an exhibit in a museum.

Yeah my first pair of earbuds I ever bought online were some CX 300s, I finally upgraded and bought ie 80s this week. Can't wait for them to get here. Sennheiser is defiantly worth the money imo.
Definitely. I had HD429's, upgraded to HD598's that I use now (still like one of the best deals) and I bought a used pair of Momentum In Ears for the go for like $35. Got my girlfriend a pair of Urbanites recently (she cares more about bass and such). Best thing is that Sennheiser is dirt cheap if you buy them used. They don't have the brand recognition like Beats and Bose and other brands.

I've struck out twice with Sennheiser phones, or three times really, at the budget end, including a pair of Senn wireless headphones, I used for a few years as my home
theater cans, they're ok but thin, shrill, and lacking bass, mainly, and tons of stupid hiss due to the stupid archaic wireless device you run them through. I even once
bought a pair of $200 Sennheiser monitor headphones which sounded flat and dry, ok, but were spectacularly uncomfortable to wear. I give up.
Orpheus is worth all that money, but few can consider it to be in their budget range.

Even I had been rich as a troll I would never buy a stupid thing like that, many can not even say what the tubes do for the sound, and the folk that recorded and mixed the audio did it on a equipment that may has cost less than those headphones, so there is a very limited amount of music fit for that thing :)
Hexapoda - It's impossible to comment on something we may never hear. The diminishing returns for the Orpheus is a non-concern for someone who's loaded. Having said that, not every rich person is going to rush out and buy these. I just find it baffling that people will hate on something that's way out of their price range. It's as if they need to justify their 'smart' way of spending.
bongmistt I am sure the sound in them will be amazing, so amazing that you even will hear ever imperfection in the recording.But the stupid thing is that the "$50.000 headphones" need a whole table for equipment with vacuum tubes, so it is not the headphones that cost rather than all the extra equipment needed to power them. It is therefor I call them stupid even the sound quality wold blow my mind.

Check stax headphones they go up to 10000$ and theyr only headphones. Orpheous has amplifires build into each cup and also in the marble box. They are extremly expensive to make. Im fine with that engineeres can go crazy and develop new technology. That someday will be in everyday headphones.

I doubt it, those are the absolute best headphones in the world now and it has a legitimately incredible sound because instead of adorning mediocre headphones with diamonds, Sennheiser actually bothered to make something worth the price just in terms of sound quality alone, doing R&D and whatnot to make the single pair of cans no other manufacturer can touch (for now).
Also the expensive materials are actually there to improve sound quality, even the marble does something

Orpheus was in 90th years big impact in the world of headphones. New technology and concept. After 20 years Senn decised to make second generation and do profit from legend because many high solvent audiophile maniacs interested on it. So they do it and of course with high demand to do high profit with extreme price tag. So this happened. Limited serie of pieces cause the increase of price so many maniacs purchased it to be able sell after 5 or 10 years more expensively. Naturally, the price is extremely overcosted out of real creation costs.
This guy wouldn’t even know the difference if they gave him a $300 pair of headphones and told him they were 50k
$500000 is the starting point. You probably need to redo power lines in your home, plus power regenerator, plus $5k digital transport or turntable. You probably want a DAC better than the built-in one. The whole setup would cost at least $70K.

The answer to the question is... no. I guarantee you that if you did a blind test with several mid to high-end headphones that cost below $500 with a Orpheus, nobody would be able to tell the difference that isn't making a lucky guess.
You can never go wrong with Sennheiser! As an audiophile myself, I'm very excited to pick up a pair of these in a few years (once the price has gone down a bit).

I don't like Sennheiser at all. Tried 3x I don't like them whatsoever. I bought the Hifiman HE400i last year, now those are great headphones that sound spectacular,

Problem with high end electrostatic headphones is that there isn't much you can listen to without bottleneck. You take a band performance, that band performance was most likely recorded with a bunch of SM57 and condenser mics, all costing no more than 1000 dollars, then it was all mixed and mastered digitally in a DAW on a PC, and the whole cost for that one song did not exceed the price of your headphones, so what is the point in that gear if there's a big ass bottleneck?
This is the best argument for taxing rich people 90% I've ever seen.

Let's just think about this for a second. Is the actual sound that you are getting out of the headphones $50,000? Well, for some people, sure. But for most, no. What you are really paying is the outright passion for music that Sennheiser has, and it has materialized into this.
