There is no problem with images that evoke scenes that revealed what is Holy, since our worship is for Him that is Holy alone. St. John of Damascus lived in a time when Christian Syria was conquered by the muslims, many people wrongfuly attributed this defeat to the fact that muslims didn't venerate icons, like christians did, so the iconoclast heressy became strong.
