As a longtime Radiohead fan, I appreciate people’s first listens and reaction. I always wonder why they aren’t a bigger band(I know they are huge, I mean even bigger) I think the biggest compliment a reactor can pay a band is saying they will definitely listen to it again. Good job guys.

A way to summing up Radiohead is: they are always, ALWAYS trying to outdo themselves and they are NEVER afraid of leaving their style behind and moving on to something very different. It can be alienating. It can also be very rewarding.

Coldplays entire first album was based on or ripped off Radioheads b-sides and unreleased tracks.
Chris Martin said that every time Radiohead release an album he wants to cry and give up music ! He also said that he would have happily lost a leg or an arm to have been able to write OK Computer !
Coldplay made a living ripping off Radioheads softer side while Muse made a living ripping off Radioheads heavier side.
Anyhow, Reckoner is a beautiful track, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

@@WelpHereWeAreOnRUclips It maybe sounds a bit cruel and snobbish to Muse and Coldplay but they basically came about because UK A&R people were sent out by record companys to find a 'new' or 'next' Radiohead.
They have obviously grew beyond that, Coldplay toured with U2 and took that stadium rock direction, Muse went more aggresive and flamboynt and gained a huge following in the heavy rock fandom.

@@rohnnyjotten3985 I'm also an OG Radiohead fan (since Pablo Honey release) and I never considered Coldplay as a rip-off of Radiohead. Their music is completely different. Muse, is an understandable comparison, as their style was clearly a straight copycat/homage to early Radiohead's work. Coldplay always sounded much more like a re-envisaged "U2" for the Britpop generation, imho.

Liked what you guys said about Creep being a disservice to them. The band actually stated that that song doesn't represent them as a band and even apologized for recording it in interviews. They admitted that when they were recording their first album (Pablo Honey) that they were unsure of themselves, as a band, so they purposely recorded a song they thought would get a lot of radio play as opposed to something authentic. That they were too hard on trying to make it big instead of creating real art. That's why the band doesn't like the song and even stopped playing it at their shows for over a decade. It had nothing to do with it being popular (as I'll informed people say) but the intent of which it was made.
You have to understand that these guys are classically trained musicians who know how to make a song that will be popular. They just aren't about that and are actually doing it for the love of the art of self expression through music. That's why their fan base is so devoted.

Basically, with Radiohead you will get something different with every album. They've gone from Grunge to Art/Experimental Rock, with every other style in between,, and it's been an amazing ride. Their next album whenever that is, will probably be cinematic krautrock. 😀
Probably my third favourite band of all time behind The Beatles, and Pink Floyd.

The thing about the Radiohead fandom, is that there ARE a few in it who will take it on the nose no matter who/what you dare compare Radiohead to. And they tend to be exclusive instead of inclusive. The rest of us are just thrilled to (enthusiastically) share some music we love and tend to love discovering new music to enjoy as well. Loving the react videos! 😊

Radiohead is my favourite band and for me, it's more about whether it's an understandable comparison or not (from a purely musical perspective). For example, Muse, I can understand and hear the similarity to early Radiohead in their songwriting and production (even though I happen not to like Muse). Coldplay however, I just don't hear any real similarity (even though I also like Coldplay).

I get the comparison to Coldplay. Their first album ("Parachutes", 2000) was very influenced by Radiohead's input from the 90's, specially "The Bends" (1995), which also features a lot of acoustic guitars, atmospheric effects and falsetto vocals.
The thing is, after the 90s ended, Radiohead decided to take their career to a totally different place, by eschewing guitars and conventional structures, and embracing synthesis and experimentation. This alienated a huge chunk of their fanbase but cemented them as a band that was interested in creating art and not catering to the charts and industry demands. Coldplay, however, took the opposite road and became more and more palatable and mainstream as their career progressed.

Coldplay went teeny-bopper and over-played pop hits. Radiohead stayed inventive and brilliant. And has inspired most rock/indie bands since their ‘97 album OK Computer. And later in 2000 inspired the music industry as a whole with their unexpected left turn, Kid A.
Band is best understood by listening to full albums chronologically to best feel their slow transition over time.
Might as well finish going through the basement.

  • @Music-tg5is

Regarding the Coldplay remarks. As a die-hard O.G. Radiohead fan from the beginning, I will admit that Coldplay were pretty great when they came out. I loved their debut album "Parachutes", which is probably their best, imho.
But even then, Radiohead were already making albums like "The Bends", "OK Computer" and "Kid A", which are all leagues above anything Coldplay has ever manged to produce creatively. "Coldplay" are a good band, but their work bears far more comparison to artists like "U2" than Radiohead.

Coldplay unfortunately turned into a very mainstream pop band. Radiohead tries to experiment more, they use more unusual chords, more ambient sounds, more unusual song structures.
Also, Radiohead never liked Creep as well. Johnny Greenwood actually tried to ruin the song with his power chords, but instead he made it iconic. The song put them on the map and allowed them to do what they do now, but yeah, they also don't like it much, so....

I love this song, but I also LOVE Creep. i like both these sides of Radiohead (Poppy/Crungey Rock and more experimental, but still accessible). But very often, especiallly recently they get too experimental for me. I like harmonies. Creep had nice harmonies. This does too. But some of therir newer stuff to mie is just ... (I'M SORRY; IT'S JUST MY OPINION) ... noise.
I feel similar about Jazz. Some Jazz that still feels musically coherent, feels nice to me (Go Go Penguin for example, or whe DMB get really Jazzy). But i DESPISE free Jazz. That makes no sense to me whatsoever.
