The animation is from one of my favourite shows as a child. I recognise some of the characters (Windy Miller is the straw chewing floppy hatted drunkard).
There were three different shows based in the same fictional county (Trumpton, Chiggly and Camberwick Green).
The Giant wicker man is not from "burning man" but from the original Edward Woodward version of "The Wicker Man" (not to be confused with the terrible Nicholas Cage remake).

This is modern Radiohead from their last 2016 album "A Moon Shaped Pool". This and "Daydreaming' are my favourites from this album. My take is its about the growth of polarisation and burn anyone who disagrees with your tribe. Maybe the man escapes because he is the authority figure and there is a similar end to the "Karma Police" video 20 years earlier when the oppressed man set the chasing car alight only for it to be empty. Hopefully you recall now you recently reacted to the classic "Just" where everyone in the video ended up on the floor. If you want to vibe to a song with just a lyrics video "Pyramid Song" is an atmospheric masterpiece

  • @johncrwarner

The very British cultural references are strong in this video.
The animation is designed to be similar to the Trumptonshire children's programmes
made in the late 1960s and played continually on the BBC so most children would know it.
Here is an episode from the first series called "Camberwick Green"
    ruclips.net/video/srtvmGUMWWs/видео.html
Mixed with the classic 1973 British horror film "The Wicker Man"
which climaxes with the sacrifice scene:
    ruclips.net/video/GRKaAiBy-Go/видео.html
Mixing those genres is very creepy.

This is a truly excellent song, and depressingly more relevant now than it ever was - and even maybe more relevant in the US in 2024.
Most notable lines for me are 'Avoid all eye contact. Do not, react.' Its that sense of... if you want to survive in an extreme politically charged environment, best to mind your business.
In the end the inspector is the one who they attempt to kill, because he is a threat to their way of life ie. persecution of 'others' without any accountability.
The government inspector sees all the warning signs, but despite being shocked by everything he sees, ignores every red flag, despite them becoming progressively more shocking to him. They also twist the knife with the hypocrisy of what are clearly migrant workers picking fruit as the townspeople are unwilling to do it for themselves. Then by the end, his failure to leave and report the dangers very clearly happening here, ends up with the inspector becoming one of the 'others' and they burn him (although not to make it slightly less dark)

At the time this song was written Europe was constantly being attacked by terrorists and large parts of Europe were turning right-wing and nationalistic in response.
In the UK a lot of scummy gutter tabloid newspapers were targeting and stereoptyping minorities but mainly Muslims and really pushing this narrative that all imigrants and asylum seekers were in fact terrorists.
This song is about the dangers of that, finger pointing, 'loose talk around tables', singling people out, witch hunting, being part of the crowd that does the lynching, because if your not careful and do what the popular 'in thing' is you will be the one hunted..

there is a juxtaposition in the songs lyrics between the burning of witches in the middle ages & what we do now to ostracize people on the internet (particularly in social media). This is why in 1 verse Thom Yorke sings the line "sing a song of sixpence" (which is a medieval nursery rhyme) & "sing a song on the jukebox" . The whole song is refering to what psychologists call 'moral panic'. I f you want to know more about what 'moral panic' is, this scene from the show 'Legion' explains it brilliantly : ruclips.net/video/pwQqOdfc7pw/видео.html&ab_channel=kript96
