@@AntonVShokolov does that make us the living failures in the arena?
Exactly what i was thinking of when i first saw the avatar.
He woke up and chose violence.
This boss is really sad.
1. Unlike the numerous Erdtree avatars and tree spirits, there’s only 1 (or 3 depending on how you look at it) Scadutree avatar. Even though the Elden ring and the Erdtree’s power diminished after the shattering, it shows that it’s still vibrant and lively unlike the Scadutree.
2. While its thorn attack is very powerful, it’s designed to keep itself far away. It doesn’t want you getting close to it because it’s scared.
3. While it does have an impressive head slam move, every other attack where it uses its head is feeble and weak. It’s the only boss with a head weakness that’s easy to exploit because it doesn’t have the strength to keep it far above itself and out of reach, you don’t even have to jump to hit it.
4. The third phase is also pretty impressive until you realize that’s all there is. It’s a brilliant flash of gold undercut by the fact that the avatar weakly falls to the floor. It’s a last ditch attempt to get you away from it.
Just like the Edtree, the Scadutree is large and imposing. But unlike the vibrant Erdtree, the Scadutree is falling apart, unable to make more of itself through golden seeds. It has traces of gold but the only way to see it is if it’s dying. Just like how the Scadutree leaks gold amber as it dies, its avatar can only show brilliance as it dies.
@@sparklepawz1185 I think while the Erdtree represents the order, the Scadutree is everything shunned by the order. It’s twisting and falling apart because it overlooks Marika’s crusade, the symbol of the Golden Order’s biggest flaw and contradiction. Marika tried to create an order of peace, where all life could flourish indefinitely, but she built it on top of a merciless genocide driven by her unending anger (and maybe the commands of the fingers, themselves clueless and abandoned), which led to the persecution of the omen, misbegotten, and all things tied to the crucible. Now the crusaders are trapped in the shadow realm, still carrying out the dirty work of an order that both forsook them and has long since collapsed, after it was destroyed by its own goddess . The whole DLC is depressing.
"It doesn't want you getting close to it because it's scared" crying in the club rn
Nah the “it doesn’t want to get close to you because it’s scared” is a lie man, that rush/dash charge attack told me otherwise
In a way it’s also Miquella’s old personality traits clinging to life. Trying to stay alive. As it guards the one rune we always tried to find, Miquella’s.

This music was beautiful for me when I first got to the third phase. The music is clearly remorseful, and the sunflower seemed to be desperately clinging on to the fight; it feels sad without really saying *why* I should be sad. For something with no clear-cut character, the Scadutree Avatar's emotional weight is really impressive.
agree 100%. I cleared the boss yesterday and had to stop playing afterwards. I couldnt pin point at the time, why i felt sad. I clipped the video, rewatched it and started getting emotional rewatching the spectacle unfold in the third phase. The power of music is immeasurable, and FromSofts choice of story telling without using ANY words is truly unparalelled

same. its animations and mannerisms make it feel alive in a way not many others have for me. the first time you get up close with it's face and it looks at you, and you just know that it *thinks* and it *feels*.
I like to think that the reason this boss has 3 phases and such a sad variant in the last phase is because, as you can tell by the item it drops, this avatar might very well have been born from the last remnants of Miquella's true nature that he has been divesting himself of throughout the lands of shadow, and that's why it's clinging to life so desperately. I feel awful for putting it down, especially when you realize the place you fight it is so close to another extremely important area regarding Marika, the mother of Miquella.
you know I must confess I had violent thoughts about setting it´s corpse on fire as it kept reviving on me while fighting it, so the sad part did not really hit the strings too much for me

What I like is the 3 phases and music, cause I'll be honest, by the third phase I never thought I'd be relating with a massive sunflower. It's a theme of both the boss and player reaching a state of exhaustion yet still clinging on. Done without some cutscene or dialogue, but in game. It's a real endurance of a fight that I don't think you'll ever find in any other game.
Absolutely agree with this, imo this dlc's a masterpiece

Yeah, the fact that the boss has 3 health bars and the third phase is sad it's like the avatar itself is trying to survive just as you and is giving it's all
I fought him and I shit you not he did 3 explosions in a row
Same, the damn thing spent most of it’s time on his third phase blowing itself up consecutively!
At least it’s easy to dodge the explosion and you have a huge punish window afterwards.
when he gets to quarter health he explodes 3 times in a row
dude it’s like bayle he did his fire breath underneath him like 4-5 times in a row i’ve quitted out
He did FOUR on me once. And I just felt bad every time
The most shocking thing about this fight is doing a non-insubstantial amount of damage to a boss for once.
It *IMMEDIATELY* puts you on a high alert mode because this shouldn't be that easy.
I was using rellana's blades and did like a quarter of his hp in 1 combo, and honestly never have i been so scared at a fight looking that easy
I jump attacked its face with a dual Flame Art Grossmesser combo and took a third off the first phase. That's when I knew I was gonna be there a while. Still got it first try though. It and Romina are among my favorites in the DLC because their moves are so well telegraphed.
I remember killing its phase 1 and going "Wow, that was actually kind of fun? A boss that was actually fun to fight in this DLC??? What's the catch???"
"Ah, there it is."
Even with his 3 phases, I found him to be the easiest boss so far

Represents holy damage builds quite well
Was freaking out when phase 3 hits but after its supernova attack, I just felt bad watching it slump over like it was tired. Got flashbacks to Sif in that moment.
It's amazing
I saw somebody say the scadutree avatar is a metaphorical representation of Miquella. Wilting, deformed, pained, but persevering and desperate to see its battle through, not giving up in the face of repeated failure (attempting to grow the Haligtree, attempting to revive Godwyn, attempting to heal Malenia). It tries so hard but despite its efforts it always fails, just like Miquella's plans never come to fruition. Hence why it drops his Great Rune. Its a stand-in for a true Miquella boss fight.

Perfect description
This was such a special moment in the game. I was in a call when i was fighting the Avatar, and I'd beaten second phase, joking going, "and now for third phase!" Thankfully, everyone was silent and let me have that moment. As soon as the third phase arose, the entire tone of the fight shifted into a somber release as both of us were on our last legs. I'd be lying if I didn't say i was getting misty eyed landing the last few hits on this sunflower running out of steam and fighting for its life.
People meme this boss, but that last healthbar gave me such flashbacks of Sif in DKS1, I just felt bad for it. I'm sorry I killed you 😭
A sunflower stuck in the quote unquote Realm of Shadow, barely holding on. It's so sad. They managed to make me cry for a literal flower. It just shows that with enough talent and dedication, anything can be emotionally impactful.
I like how strangely sad and melancholy this theme gets as it goes on and I think it ties in well with how 'pathetic' this boss is.
The Scadutree only exists because Marika abandoned it and the sorrow and pain it's caused the Shadow Lands.
This thing has one of my favorite designs in the game. Despite how evil it looks, the flower head and the golden glow to its attacks makes it feel divine and righteous. If I were a resident of the Realm of Shadows, I’d see it as a good omen if I ever saw this thing. It doesn’t feel evil. It just feels like it’s doing it’s job to protect the Scadutree.
This boss is really cool from a lore perspective. Its remembrence tells us that the Scadutree was made to house concepts which don't fit into the golden order and the Erdtree. Because of this, the tree is hidden away in the land of shadow by Marika, like all the other things she'd rather remain unseen (*cough* Messmer *cough*). The disorder it represents makes it brittle though, and the tree is dying, so it grows twisted thorns to wound and reject anything that gets close to it, just like it was rejected by Marika and the Golden Order.
The avatar itself is a representation of this, aggressively attacking anything that approaches the base of the tree with its thorns. The reason for its revival could be that it's actually 3 separate avatars, like how the Erdtree has many of its own scattered around the Lands Between. The fact that they're far fewer and weaker than the Erdtree avatars could be to show how the Scadutree is relatively weaker than the Erdtree. In phase 3, as a last ditch effort, the final avatar twists itself up into the shape of the Scadutree and explodes, symbolising its eventual destruction foretold by the Scadutree fragment item description. After this, the avatar is left broken and vulnerable, allowing you to finish it off and put it out of its misery.
As to why it has the remains of Miquella's great rune is anyone's guess. Miquella is shown to have deep compassion for the suffering of the people in the land of shadow, so maybe that extends to the Scadutree itself. He could have given its avatar the remnants of his great rune as some kind of consolation for his mother's transgressions against it, but I'm clutching at straws now.
All this is to say is that Scadutree avatar is the best boss in Fromsoft's entire catalogue. 10/10 guaranteed masterpiece. Don't fight me.
3:51 There’s something so heartbreaking and tragic about the nature of this solo. With no other noise, the strings and melody really come out.
I can't believe I got emotional for a sunflower 😔
I hated fighting this weird ass guy because it kept coming back up but that 3rd phase caught me by surprise, the little guy tried his hardest, felt bad putting it down 😔
The Dramatic Sunflower tries it´s best to pull at your heartstrings... while it explodes three times in holy light and sets you on fire...
Really like this one, gave me Abyss watchers vibes by how sad the melody became.
The erdtree avatars are nostalgic to me. I remember fighting all of em always looking forward to another one till eventually I reached the last one, which meant the end of the game in a way. Hearing this…the last avatar we will ever face with a remixed theme I knew so well…and the implications of the sunflowers lore was quite sad. Like saying farewell to a familiar face and the first playthrough.
Amazing game and amazing dlc, I’ll really miss it man.
I love the leitmotiv in the second and third phase for the original Erdtree Avatars, I've fought them too much to not hear it while I was fighting. This might be an S tier boss in general, I love it!
Of course it has three health bars. The friggin DLC is named after it. Don’t take my word for it:

I know FromSoft excels in making tragic living beings and of course it's the case in Elden Ring, but man this thing with the sad part on his third phase, not giving up, trying to fight and desperately survive would almost make me cry
I did wonder how it keeps reviving .. the shadow lands are were all manners of death end up eventually.
This boss was the equivalent of spawn killing until it finally just....gave up
Easily one of my favorite DLC bosses. I don't know how some other people seem to hate it. The triple-phase fakeout fight, the _incredible_ music, the visual design and spectacle, it's phenomenonal.
I felt so bad for it with how it gets increasingly desperate and exhausted, and the music drives that in even harder. Its existence just seems painful, like it's a distorted, broken, confused thing that isn't certain if it's even supposed to exist, but is desperately fighting to cling to life anyway, which just makes me feel more conflicted.
It creates the rare situation where killing it and not killing it both make me feel like I'm doing something cruel.
The Scadutree Avatar is such a tragic boss, and the music reflects it well, beginning to end.
A withered sunflower, clinging desperately to life, deprived of it and as it grows more desperate channels all it has left into an explosion of golden light, yet it is a meaningless struggle.
Marikas greatest achievement in the Lands of shadow was not the Genocide on the Hornsent but the destruction of the Crucible, usurping the source of it's Power and causing it to wither away to the brink of death.
Only two fights in the dlc made me cry, and it was Moore and this goddamn sunflower. I was super into the fight from the start, because of how cool it was and it’s moveset was fun. And then it started getting weaker.. and the music got solemn.. and I saw it collapse and drag itself towards me. Genuinely so so sad watching it desperately fight for it’s life, even the exertion from its holy attacks seem to hurt it..
Surpringly, despite having heard the theme countless times in the main game, this one hits very differently.
maybe because of how tragic it sounds. It reminds me of the old demon king's theme from ds3 with how tragically weak it gets as the song progresses.
This ost is really reminiscent of the Erdtree Avatar, being especially prominent at 2:33
It follows the exact same theme. Just sadder near the end
Once upon a time, in the land where light never shone, there were three brothers born in the filth and sludge of their great tree. Alone, they were weak, and so spent most of their time beneath the earth, huddled together for security and strength. Then one day, their fates changed.
A great rune fell to them from on high. Though seemingly broken, it radiated with the gold of grace. This was a sign, that their endurance and patience had finally been rewarded. As soon as they saw it, they became enamoured, obsessed with it. And then a man came to their home.
The first brother, the most hot headed of the three, burst from hiding to attack the intruder. It wasn't known if they were a test or if they simply came to steal their new treasure, but the first wouldn't not let it be taken. They fought with all he had, but he gave too much of his strength to his brothers and soon fell.
The second brother, the strongest and the most protective of the three, saw this and flew into a rage. He emerged out and lashed at the invader in a want of revenge. Their purpose didn't matter, only that they had killed one of two things the brother had in this world that mattered. He was the stronger of the three but it wasn't enough and, after a good attempt, fell in turn.
Finally the third brother came. They were the youngest and never managed to catch what little was given, relying on his elders to keep him fed. Without them, there was nothing for the third. He emerged from hiding, but not for vengeance or coveting the treasure - damn the treasure now - but in hopes that he'd join his brothers in death. What last stand wasn't one of glory and soon, the last of the light in him was consumed to the darkness.
The invader, claiming the spoils, went on with their journey.
(Edit: Fixed typos)

I'm a huge sucker for insanely difficult bosses like Friede, Malenia, Ishin, Rellana etc etc; but so far this plant has been my favorite boss of the entire DLC even tho it's not too crazily hard, idk I just enjoyed fighting her way more than Rellana or Messmer
My goodness that last phase is so heartbreaking.😢 Reminds me of the Sealed Vessel from Hollow Knight.

I had the same impression y know
have heard people say this is boss is like stupid tedious or something, but the first time I fought it was with my bow only character and genuinely was one of the most fun fights to learn like that. So genuine suggestion, if you're running a quality or dex build then you should try the blackbow with normal arrows. fire arrows are actually worse, cuz the fire damage doesn't scale and isn't boosted by the spear talisman. my setup was both arrows sting talismans, spear talisman and dragoncrest greatshield. For armor I was using the leather set from patches for drip and light roll, but it's probably still fine with med roll if you want more defense or don't have the stamina.
Scadutree Avatar and Midra are my favorite fights in the game. The music is great too
Nah what did Miyazaki had in mind to make me feel bad and cry for a fucking sunflower with this depressing ost 😭
I shit you not, when i killed the second one, i was out of everything, i was practically shocked seeing the third one
@@noggy3133 Me too, but the fight made it feel like both me and the boss we're tired asf, and we're just having a test of who goes down first at that point.
Never thought a sunflower would be the culmination of all instances of the Golden Order/Erdtree leitmotif appearances

I hadn't realized this until just recently, but the fact that it's a more emotional, wretched version of the erdtree avatar OST is just so pleasing to me
I love how we kill what is in a sense an entire Pantheon and this boss. THIS ABSOLUTE UNIT OF A TREE IS LIKE NOT TODAY 3 BLOODY GOD DAMN TIMES!
Honestky scadutree avatar is one of the best bosses in the dlc
POV: You are a zombie trying to invade some guys lawn for his precious brain.
I don’t understand why people didn’t like this boss. Not only did i think it was COOOL AS FUCK. But the surprise health bars gave me old school second phase boss vibes. Like soul of cinder for example! The dread and EXCITEMENT that the fight isn’t finished yet.
Wow man. We're calling Ds3 two health bar bosses old school now. I'm not even old but I feel like it
So many goosebumps with this soundtrack, perfectly fits to the fight.

Messmer's weapon art MELTS this flower. Fitting.
i like that second part of the ost, it shows that the tree is fighting with it last breath, giving everything it has to survive, which is the saddest part
"Wow, did I just first try this boss? That was unexpectedly ea-"
Ok...15th try....that's it ri-
Sometimes, just as things fall to pieces, it unleashes its last flash of great power…
@@Skhighglitch nice dark souls ll reference
Little bit of Lore about the avatar:
The Scadutree avatar is an embodiment of the Scadutree itself, rising to protect the tree when it’s under threat. Similar to that of the Erdtree avatars from the base game.
In a sense, the avatars (like the trees themselves) embody everything that their respective lands represent. The Erdtree represents vitality, hope, and grace while the Scadutree represents the frailty, despair, and abandonment.
The Scadutree is a dying tree, sickened by the inconceivable amount of death and suffering in the shadow lands, growing weak, slowly withering away.
Miquella in this story, approaches the tree and offers it a world of eternal peace and prosperity in exchange for the destruction of his great rune (the last thing tying him to his mother Marika) A destructive power only the Scadutree held. Once it was destroyed, the Scadutree absorbed the shattered rune, supplying it with enough power to conjure an avatar.
So when it fights us in the game it thinks we have come for the rune, the only speck of power it has left in this dying land. Also the only power that could be used to resist miquellas charms, meaning enough to defeat miquella herself. That is why it fights so desperately. It is doing everything it can to survive, to see Miquella age of peace. Towards the end of the fight, the avatar starts channeling the last of the scadutrees power to wipe you out, destroying itself in the process. Shows you the depths of its desperation willing to die if it meant taking you out.
In the end it withered away, never to see that age of peace. Though one can only imagine what a tree as weak and frail as that, would’ve felt about such a thing.
A sad tree, rooted in a terrible world, praying for a better one.
Miquella is a he tho….
St. Trina is female
Miquella is male
this boss fight pissed me off but the messmer spear did so much damage to it and visually its an awesome arena and enemy design. and this music is real good. dope fight
I felt so bad for the poor flower when it kept coming back and the music gets sadder and sadder. Such an underutilized technique to have music that gets sad during a fight to tell a story.
Why isn't this on spotify, same goes for the location osts? but the other main bosses are on there.
Also love it when they remix a already existing theme and you recognize the melody, this one really sounds like a withered giant sunflower that swims around in golden juice and shoots giant thorns and nukes at you.
The Spotify release is most likely an unsanctioned release, not mentioned by Bandai Namco nor is Bandai Namco listed as the distributor. The tracks also aren’t attributed to the correct composers, I wish whoever uploaded it put all ~30 tracks instead of a measly 8…
I uploaded them all here properly in official order and with max sound quality and composers on the description. Spotify upload is just some fan that didn't researched enough to know what he is doing I guess.
I never thought I'd be emotionally invested in a giant plant trying to kill me.
Literally my favourite ost in the dlc 0:06
@@ZOMBX2019 it is a modification of the theme of the avatars of the erdtree in the base game. But it’s splandid in any case hahah
@@antoniogaletta0149I know dumass
to anyone who wonders why there are 3 phases for such "random" boss - it is because we all want to listen to awesome OSTs, especially the last one, they can't stop to amaze me with their soundtracks (died like 5 times in last phase only due to how soundtrack absorbed my attention :))
Love how every phase has bits of the next phase
probably my favourite boss in the dlc and maybe even elden ring, the vibes aesthetic moveset and well telegraphed attacks make for a great boss
I love how the slow emotional part of the piece is matched with the strongest form of the foe. Great piece in general, love the ost of the DLC.
That beginning though....Fromsoft casually giving a flower and some thorns one of the best themes in the entire game
I get what everyone says about Yuka carrying the soulsborne catalog and Shoi has certainly earned all the praise he’s gotten and more, but honestly Tai Tomisawa cooks so hard every single time he touches a song. Death Knights, Rellana, Bayle, and now this masterpiece.
And rellana's theme, both trailer and in-game version.
Fortissax wasn't Tomisawa. Yoshimi Kudo did that one.
@@Boc_theSeamster my bad, you’re right (also, yoshimi kudo is obv no lightweight, love the Putrescent knight theme)
Composers are in the description btw for this one
@@shroomian2739 Hate to do this to you again, but Putrescent Knight is Tsukasa Saitoh's work, not Yoshimi Kudo.
This boss was sick. It was probably the only one in the dlc that was too easy though 😅
Most memorable ost of the bunch, also because sunflower is so huge, but not so huge so it actually fits in screen (looking at you dragons and tree spirits), it expresses his intentions the most, making him more alive than some tiny humanoid bosses
There is an tarnished on you're lawn
We don't like tarnished on our lawn
Jokes aside, how did they manage to make a giant withered sunflower have such a cool design? This thing has my personal favorite design out of all FromSoft bosses!
The music of this boss is incredible one of my favorite of the dlc
Great Theme, Great Boss, Great Weapon for Remembrance (imo, is on pair of Rellana, Lord weapon and Messmer's Lance). It doesn't top Bayle in epicness, because Bayle had one hell of Setup, one better than the final boss of dlc had.
This is the only thing that Scadutree didn't have... Setup for we hype them.
If we had a questline about what happened with Miquella's Greatrune hyping it, i'm sure, this boss would get more love.
i really don't think it's too difficult to assume that this is a product of Miquella's failed efforts and the soundtrack fits the fight so it's in my top 3 favourite in the dlc
