    I can't emphasize enough the point on loot. Torchlight was the same. Tons and tons of items dropping all over the place, and it is all garbage. And since gold is pointless in these games, you soon realize it isn't even worth picking items to even sell, so you end up ignoring 99% of the entire item system. Which begs the question, why even have the items drop in the first place?
    Leveling feels just as bland and boring as well. Everything is scaled so you level up and get stronger, and your enemies automatically level up with you. Which again, questions why you are leveling up at all.
    You could remove item drops, attributes, and leveling from these modern arpg's and the experience wouldn't change. It is an illusion of older game mechanics which exist purely because tradition, because "well that is what these games are supposed to do". You go through the motions, but none of it is having an actual impact.
    What we lost from older games is these complex game systems and mechanics. It is like another comment said, there was so much depth to D2 beneath the surface. You could play the game for years and still learn something you didn't know about. And people did play it for years. Modern games, in an attempt to become more accessible, have stripped so much that what is left is only interesting for a few moments before boredom sets in. It is like moving from chess to tic-tac-toe. Sure, tic-tac-toe is more accessible, but you've experienced pretty much everything it has to offer after a few games. While chess has been played for centuries, with deep lines of opener analyzing, moves and games named after influential players, communities forming around the game, entire collection of books written about it, a competitive scene, etc.
    The ironic part is that there is a greater demand more than ever before for games to last a long time. Some developers look at 10 year plans. Not to mention the growing e-sports scene. And yet the more streamlined and accessible they make games, the harder it is to maintain interest. You can't have it both ways, you can't push out a tic-tac-toe game and expect it to have a history like chess.

      Like loot in d2 is really that much better. Think about it. We all want that enigma, HoTo, 35fcr Spirit, griffons eye, etc... Sure good loot in d2 is much more rare and you do not have this +50000% damage and multipliers etc. Sets in d2 is crap, the vendors are meaningless beyond act 2 normal basically, and so on.

    your description of spells and how they feel was spot on and the main reason i stopped playing d3.
    it's like d2 playing compares to rockclimbing.. you have to check for a good route, look for all the edges you can get and know when to go for a grip or set your feet in a better position. d3 playing is like pulling yourself up on a rope. no matter what you do or how hard you pull.. it's not diverse or demanding. you are just going up.. and nothing else

  • @chrispeng5502
    @chrispeng5502 8 лет назад +49

    I heard some people thought Diablo II was just clicking and repetitive. But that is far from the case. While playing the game, you have to pause and make decisions constantly. You need inventory management skills to balance the potions, charms and extra spaces to pick up gears. You need a mental hash table to quickly scan the loot so you know what to pick and what to give up. You need knowledge about breakpoints of FCR/FHR/FBR, so you can mix and match your gear and leave some space for MF. You need to know the strength of different mobs and just run away in certain circumstances.
    I think a beautiful game will always make you uncomfortable at some time. The first time I sold a Unique because I have no space left, I was miserable. But only by conquering the uncomfortable and come to terms with the game, you can actually fall in love with the game. That's why I feel modern games are way too user friendly and streamlined, you pick it up and you let it go, because you didn't even think actively, you just follow the leads of the developers, they decided what was best for you, and you didn't even care.

    • @zorkan111
      @zorkan111 6 лет назад +1

      Knowledge of breakpoints is a good thing for the game? LOL. In this game 35% FCR is not better than 30% FCR. That's a flaw of the game engine, nothing more. That's not a plus for the game. That's a negative. A player should never be required to know what's going on "under the hood" in order to play the game successfully. 31%, 32%, 33%, 34% FCR should be better than 30% FCR in a decently programmed game.

    • @Shmandalf
      @Shmandalf 6 лет назад +5

      You don't need to know that stuff to be successful? 12 year old me made it through the game fine before I even knew looking stuff up on the internet was a thing (I ran a fucking necro wielding a bow, for god's sake). Also tons of extremely successful games use increments in their systems, it isn't a flaw in design; it's a _type_ of game design (Monster Hunter is a recent example I'm going with here, which is a very successful and world renowned ARPG franchise). To just write off an intentional design choice as a game engine flaw just because you don't particularly like it is silly at best and intellectually dishonest at worst, when the system clearly works fine for many different games.
      Players aren't required to know this to do fine in the game (In D2 or Monster Hunter, conversely). It's entirely optional, and knowing something more about a game over your fellow player _should_ be something that gives you an edge in any game, in just about every genre. Both the games mentioned here rely a lot more on the skill of the player than the bonuses they bring to the table. It's like getting upset at someone for knowing an official monopoly rule that you haven't heard of before, just because you never read them and it just screwed you over. So no, it isn't a negative thing. Many _many_ people enjoy this type of system, so speak for yourself.

    • @MintyLime703
      @MintyLime703 3 года назад +1

      I know this comment is 4 years old but I'd just like to point out that nothing you said takes away from the fact that it really is just about clicking on enemies. Everything else is there just to further facilitate more clicking on tougher enemies. It's a perfectly valid critique. The combat is shallow and all the depth lies in managing numbers. And idk how you could even remotely argue that the game isn't repetitive. Seems to me like you're portraying questionable mechanics and design decisions as being good things just to point fingers at modern games for not falling into some of the same traps. Like really? User convenience is a bad thing? Playing D2 from the perspective of a newer player I see why people like it, but its flaws are so incredibly obvious without nostalgia goggles or Stockholm syndrome. A lot of arguments in its defense often seem to boil down to
      >new game bad, old game good

      I, for one, really love the colors of Diablo 3. I like the darker atmosphere of the older games but ironically, I get more of a nostalgic vibe when I play Diablo 3 over the original two. The colors really remind me of my favorite show as preteen/teen (and still one of my favorites), Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as one of my favorite games of all time, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. Thus when I play the game, I just get this really heavy nostalgic vibe that I absolutely love.
      Granted, I may be a bit biased as Diablo 3 was my first time playing a Diablo game (and my second time playing an ARPG; my first was Drakensang Online), and I haven't played Diablo 2 yet. I did get the first game running via a virtual drive but haven't been able to buy D2 (mostly because I'm not about to pay $20 to play a 19-year-old game that hasn't received updates in years). However, I don't think I'm biased that much since I really do enjoy the first game so far.

      That they are evolved on a technical scale, or that they evolved from the graphical style of d2?

    • @sartanko
      @sartanko 8 лет назад +4

      *****
      I'd say the latter is false, D2 strived for a realistic grounded look (armor designs were still fantasy but fairly grounded)
      D3 obviously strive to emulate the art style of Warcraft with a painted aesthetic and exaggerated proportions, both in character design, armor and weapon design, and architectural design. It clearly didn't evolve from D2.
      Wether this is good or bad is completely subjective.

    Interestingly, what you said about the skills all blending together and becoming a spam of nonesense really applies to Maplestory as well. Old school Maplestory was defined by having a small number of skills that each class wielded. So warriors felt and played a lot different from mages or archers. Now, almost all classes have some insane mobbing skill they spam that's pretty similar to everyone else's insane mobbing skill while they user their version of flying or zooming around the map.

    Yeah... Monster resistances were awesome... I can still very vividly remember when I first met my Phisical Resistance monster.. as a barbarian... I was like...WHAT? I literally cannot kill that... And realised I have to just leave that monster behind.
    Compared to D3, where (if at all) you have the zodiac amulet (or ring, I don't remember), that changes dmg bonus after time, and rotates constantly, was the only impactful decisionmaking in terms of elemental dmg.
    With the necro, they started to add in somewhat different builds, but because of dmg being multiplicative in D3, it's literally impossible to balance anything. So it became their demise.

    Basically he doesn't like having more progression in the endgame, he just wants a maximum cap of monster HP and damage. Personally, I'd much rather have continued progression than 10,000 more f***ing Meph runs, like seriously.
    And a lot of his complaints other than that are also true in D2, which ultimately makes me think he just likes chewing on the member berries. "Most of the gear is garbage and utterly ignored." Sounds ALOT like D2, and at least in D3 it can actually fit in your bag.
    Liking rerolling charms for a 1 in 10bajillion chance of getting something good is... well difficult to understand.
    I also can't possibly understand how he would find the combat in D2 better than in D3. Like... spamming 1 ability over and over while ignoring monsters that are immune to that ability is apparently more interesting than more contemporary concepts like CD management and movement, but what do I know.
    Look, to each their own. I've played both, and I just wish they made D3 LOOK more like D2. The combat and reward systems (post Loot 2.0) make D3 a significantly more polished and rewarding experience in my opinion. D2 is literal torture after you kill Hell Baal for the first time.

      couldn't get in d3...At release it was absolute garbage...than with ROS and rifts it got me hooked for about 3 months...quit around rifts 120... two things for me: loot and the look. look was too fantasy. And loot was pre set build you had to have every piece to progress...so no custumization...Just taking the example of shako in the vid here ..u could replace it with crown of ages to be a tank or with a rare circlet, or with nightwing ect.....and still be around the same power lvl.
      So how do i get 10 grift higher? same exact gear but with higher rolls and higher rolls..hey lets get it primal....nooo but but there is also an ancient one after that with +10000 intelligence... think in latest patches they even added stuff after ancient primal lolll where does this end...
      doing thousands than millions than billions, than numbers l cant even say so high they are...the exponantial power progression with pre set gear choices was bad.
      And honestly on d2 part if ur doing the same thing over and over its ur choice. Played alot of that game and never did the same thing over and over ....there is 5 acts with lots of zones to farm...Lo runes drop from normal mobs at begining of hell...all this farm this place 10000 times isn't true if you dont want to ...liberty...the new added terror zones are also a good positive.

    Not to mention the art style. Very dark and evil with D2, even the picking phase when you choose your character, dark and gritty. D3 was more colorful and blocky like WOW or StarCraft 2. There was just a more realistic tone to D2 where as it feels like D3 is more cartoony. Also, 4 players vs 8 on D2, and you could have your companion with you. It was more chaotic with 8 people and companions running around. D2 also has 1 more character class than D3 does; more variety is a good thing. I agree with you on D3 getting boring late game. I went back to D2 for that same reason. D2 = Better in every way. (I also think StarCraft was better than the second. Same thing.) Blizzard for me has been going downhill for a while. Blizzard North is what made the company what it is today and they're gone. Haven't played really anything blizzard lately accept the old stuff.

Anyways Starcraft II did a lot better job compared to Diablo III as a successor but it was still kinda meeeeh even tho i enjoyed Wings of Liberty story, i think it was decent. The others expansions were meeeh... But in the end of a day i think Blizzard fucked up D3 really hard like realllllllllly hard. All they had to do is bring same (better) mechanics.. Keep the dark tone of the game and few new stuff.... I think they pushed it too quickly and thought about income only.. D3 is so fucking colorful and childish ffs.. Im playing it for 3 days and im already sick of it. I could play D2 nonstop and it was still fun

      Really old comment but I agree for the most part. I love Starcraft 1 and 2 for different reasons, but they play differently enough from one another that the only thing really tying them together are the races you play and some of the mechanics. The same could be said for D2-D3. Like Starcraft 2, D3 seemed to focus more on break-neck speed/action, whereas the primary focus of Starcraft 1 and D2 were thoughtful decision making (At least, until you get into 8 man MP mode in D2).
      I mean they might as well both be their own franchise, I feel they're different enough to be considered entirely new IPs, but that's just my 2 cents.

    I've said this in other places but i truly feel what was the biggest downfall of D3 was infact WoW. The instant loot for 'epics' in raiding, esp the way WoW became prior to d3 launch is what ruined the mfing that D2 created. D3 is an instant gratification game in its current stat. Oddly this is what the community asked for after vanilla D3 b/c, wait for it, vanilla D3 was too hard to gear. No one wanted to put in time it took to find things, which in retrospect was a complete crap shoot when compared to D2.

    3:40 and 7:44 could not be more spot on. So few viable choices of builds, it’s all just math. Also, you can casually grind a build for 2 weeks or so, and after that, you need to generate hundreds of the same item in order to progress by getting ancient plus the 4 specific item attributes you need. Takes soooooo much time to get any sort of meaningful upgrade after a month, and no satisfaction from a good drop or runeword, and endgame is heavily dependent on fishing. Who has that kind of time?

    I recommend you to play either Titan Quest or Grim Dawn, both from the Crate Entertainment and is the closest thing you can have to a modern Diablo 2 plus they dont have preset class, instead you can choose to be a pure class or mix 2 classes; the possibility of builds are endless.

    Honestly, aside from the auction house, I think D3 vanilla was better. It was actually challenging to unlock Inferno if you weren't using the RMAH, and it had a reasonable difficulty curve, instead of the snooze-fest that is RoS's campaign. And it was very much focused on making the experience of playing from 1-60 the "main game" rather than all about end-game rifting with the campaign just being a grind to get through first. I actually enjoyed playing through D3, whereas in RoS if I want to make a new character I just get somebody to powerlevel me because 1-70 sucks so fucking much now.
    Also, the game wasn't all balanced around sets. Maybe there were the same number of "optimal" builds, but it felt like there were a lot more viable builds back in vanilla, because you didn't ABSOLUTELY NEED to build around taking advantage of whatever pre-determined set bonuses were available to your class.
    This is something I really do not like about Diablo 3's online-only approach. People talk about "when the servers go down" or "what if I have my laptop on a plane" or whatever, but my biggest complaint wrt online-only, is that I cannot play a pre-2.0 Diablo 3. I would love to play unpatched D3 vanilla on my own, in the same way that I can go back and play Diablo 2 vanilla on, like, 1.03 or something if I don't feel like building all my characters around synergies.

      I dont see why people hated powerleveling, you dont have to do it. Powerleveling was a thing in D2 as well, probably even more potent. I remember doing 10 cow level runs got me from level 1-85 ish, and cow level runs were like 3-5 minutes max.

    you have immunity amulets like mara's (poison immune and heals instead) Also when you talk about the fact that you enjoy swaping gear for a certain situation you are not really talking about D2, because in D2 the inventory space is too limited for "sideboarding"...you can barely save runes and gems and pieces of gear for runewords/craft. When you say this it feels like you are comparing D3 with Plugy (which is not D2) in the situational gear saving stash.

    In D3, you had the real money auction house. You could just spend a couple of thousand dollars IRL cash to deck your char up. This option was kind of missing in D2. So one problem was that you needed to play the game D2 in order to obtain items.

    single elements immunity in monsters sounds like a great idea in paper, but it makes the problem of fishing even more annoying to top players. They would just go into a gr with their best build which deals fire dmg, and then find out that the mobs are fire immune so they quit and start "fishing" effectively adding another element to an already deep pool.

  • @brianwilliams4183
    @brianwilliams4183 6 лет назад

    The sorc and the necro are points where D3 strengths as well as its weaknesses show. The strengths are obvious but I feel that the weaknesses are in the play style. There's not real difference in how the demon hunter, the wizard, the necro and the monk handle. In a sense the WOW wizard and the D2 wizard are unique. They have teleport abilities that blow away the other classes. I also tend to imagine pitch meetings. There had to be a point when hopes were shattered in the development team when they realized that the D3 wizard was going to have the WOW mage kit. Ice beam, arcane....

      Sure, niched builds wouldn't work with their specific runewords or uniques. But "normal" builds in D2 wouldn't go to total shit if one of your items broke or was under powered, nor does D3 have niche builds at all. That's saying something about D3.
      I mean no disrespect. Hope you have an excellent day. Fuck

    • @chopcooey
      @chopcooey 8 лет назад

      yeah ik, no niche builds = fail. In D3, all the build variety is so minor that each class is basically a build. not only that but from what i have played the customization of spells is nearly an aesthetic preference with minor effects.

    Really great analysis. I just watched your "how to start a sorc from scratch" video, and all that video did was give a general guide (wasn't really a guide...) to which pieces you used along the way and why they were helpful. And in general, D2 guides discuss the stat priorities you need on your character, and lets you find the pieces to fill in those gaps. But the best in slot lists are complicated, because it takes a long time to find them, so the guides are much more detailed in describing the balance you need to find. In comparison to D3 2.X guides, which spell everything out, with almost no decision-making necessary.
    However, I totally agree that immediately after hitting 70 in D3 is extremely fun. I'd go as far as to say it's probably the most fun diablo experience to-date. At that point, legendaries are rare, and each one has such powerful effects that you find yourself swapping out your entire set of skills around that item. And you immediately feel the difference in power. You get a frequent dose of power increase, and it becomes addicting. This can only exist in D3 because of how easily you can change skills and because legendaries are tied to skills. So to me, the main problem with D3 is how powerful the set bonuses are. If there were no sets, and you just adapted your skills based on your legendaries, I'd enjoy D3 for more than a couple of weeks every season.

    coming from someone who is highly ranked in several different classes on diablo III, I actually agree with alot of what lama said. The biggest thing that I love and miss about d2 is the ambience. it's dark and gritty and almost always makes you feel uncomfortable. As far as the gear goes with d3, yes nothing is truly rare you are just looking for first the right rolled stats of that gear, then the ancient rolled correctly vrs. then the primal ancient vrs of that gear. the rarity of the gear comes from getting the correct rolls. if you put enough time into an item in d3 you can almost always obtain the primal vrs of that item. that is not the same with d2 (for instance tyreals might). ..................... so it sounds like I prefer d2 then why am I playing d3? the reason is the team aspect and the mechanics. It truly takes time to get mechanically good at some builds and make decisions as a team to progress higher and higher. that is the aspect that brings me back to d3.

      Yeah that's true but it's nice when there's at least a little bit of excitement when things drop. For instance in D2 I'm currently grinding to farm a Monarch Shield and an Ethereal Elite Armor with 0 sockets. On the way to looking for those though I have found cool things like:
      High runes (super exciting/rare!)
      Eth Cryptic Axes to roll for sockets
      6os PBs
      Rare Diadems/Circlets that could have GG stats better than any unique
      Rare rings/ammys
      Etc...
      There are so many NON unique/set items that are awesome to find and exciting that it makes me actually care to look at loot and get excited about things. D3 just didn't have this because it was just searching for that specific legendary and that was it.

    The major problem with D3 in my mind is that D3 and the first expansion are different games. In orignal D3 gold had value, sets were not really needed. In the orignal mainly people were using yellows and you had to balance survival with damage. I still loved going through with my friends and getting item level 63 weapons and being so excited because they were greatly improving our damage as we pushed through orignal torment.
    It's really to bad that there is no option to play "orignal d3" with an auction house.
    The xpac introduced all the issues with bloated item drops. The game also changed over from survival and damage to mainly just damage, you just blow stuff up before it can hit you.
    A few things they did do right, is at the right difficulty monster types matter. Early Grift/rift pushing used to farm for an easy set of monsters like zombies.
    Also I think that the "elective mode" option should have been locked to enabled always, having something limit your ability choices makes the game feel a little better and makes your choices matter a little more. This could have helped spells to stand out and be different.

    For D3:RoS it seems intentional to have a game that is very accessible for general public, people who will buy the game, play for roughly a week or two and then move to another game.
    After playing Vanilla (sold 1 item for 100€ so I've got my money for the game back :) i kinda lost interest, picked up RoS couple weeks ago just because i was bored. Well there are alot of factors why D3 had a bad rep from the get go. The hardcore players loved the difficulty, the casuals hated it. It became increasingly easier over time with nerfs. People look at things that "fail" and dont look for reasons why, they just blame the game itself. I have no idea what Jay Wilson did to piss anyone off. Also, D3 was bigger than D2 to many people, dont forget about them.

      I think we (the pissed off ones) expected it to be the next big thing.. And it just wasnt that..

    I've played D3 since beta without taking a break and I absolutely agree with you man. I played D1 and D2 religiously back in their prime years and D3 really comes nowhere close to them.

    the only thing in D3 that is objectively better than D2 is the stash. Thats all.

    Thank you so much! I watched a lot of comparions between the two games and yours just feels right and is on point!!! You say, what a lot of people/gamers think (deep in their little gamer hearts).

    Multipliers in gear is a bandaid the devs added right after the d3 xpack and it became a curse.
    They need to multiply more and more each season cause the current players got addicted to the increase in damage and being able to do a GR higher than last season. Really wish it was never added in the first place and the devs have founded other ways to keep players interested =/

    D3 reminded me of your average MMORPGs. I never got the D2 "feelings" from it.
