    Stan inserted me many many times. Awesome pilot. Anytime I would load on a Blackhawk and look into the cockpit and see that mustache, I relaxed a bit, because I knew his flying skills were above all others. Great job Stan, glad to see you still kicking. I'll never forget getting that chip light warning we got in Bosnia, you scared the crap out of me.

    I met Michael Durant back in early 2000 at an Law Enforcement Aviation Conference. He came to our table and introduced himself to us, sat down and talked with us for over an hour. He talked about Mogadishu and his ordeal. He said numerous times the real heroes that day were the Rangers. He felt the media made him out to be a hero and that he was writing a book "In the Company of Heroes" to set the record straight. When he was talking about Shughart and Gordon he had tears in his eyes. While in captivity, he said the flights with the loud speakers saying "Michael Durant, we will never leave you behind" kept him going. He said the flights were 24/7. Over thirty years in Law Enforcement and thats day was one I'll never forget.

    My team was laying down on a PZ one night waiting for an MH-60 pickup. My watch was synced and I was watching the seconds count down +/- 30 seconds. We could not hear anything coming as the time window arrived then, no-shit out of nowhere, the bird rolled in and practically landed at my feet. I looked back and the crew chief was hanging completely out of the door gunner window. These dudes are the absolute best in the world. RLTW/DOL.

She still went by Miss Durant. Many of my friends dads were 160th pilots. Don’t know their first names but Rainer and Cooper. I know Cooper had a bad crash and I as paralyzed. Was really good friends with his daughter in high school got to meet Gary Sinise at their house on night! Also David Smith I believe his first name is David. his oldest son was one of my best friends growing up until he passed away in 2006. His dad played in the movie as one of the little bird pilots.

    My best 4 yrs in my 22 yrs of Army Aviation was flying & working with the 2nd Ranger Bn Hunter Army Airfield. We flew up to Connecticut to pickup the first 15 Army Blackhawks produced. I flew hundreds of hours under goggles, As a flight engineer/gunner we supported the Rangers in all aspects…I would break down 7 Blackhawks put them on a Air Force C5A aircraft and load up Rangers & others and take off anywhere in the world in a very short time. 1980-84 was a great time to be there! We flew soooo many hours day & night.. we were known for our great flying at night. We flew lots of missions for mountain tng, Halo jumps, Haho jumps, Stabo flying, insertions & extractions of LZ’s and many other Ranger trainings. So fun flying the rangers & grunts from Ft. Stewart, Ga. So funny to pull positive & negative G’s and see grunts/Rangers puke all over😊😊.. one time their was 22 Rangers at a LZ so I put them all on my bird and brought them to HAAF….dirty stinky guys working hard….loved it!! We eventually lost several pilots to the 160th….I was a senior SFC/E7 made E8/1SG and my flying days were over… went to Spook school and become a Counterintelligence Agent doing Spook work as I was doing right out of Ft. Rucker for Huey’s in the Army Security Agency in the late 70’s….SIGINT….what a great 22 yrs in & out of aviation…. PS: I did loose 2 wives during these years being gone so much!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    A couple of incredible Navy Seals are from my hometown of Shreveport, LA. That'd be Rob & Jonas. SOC Rob Reeves & LCDR Jonas Kelsall were incredible human beings and even better sailors. I only wish I could have been lucky enough to have known them before they were gone. Unfortunately, as you know they were on Extortion-17 when it was shot down 6 Aug 2011. Such a terrible loss. I would haver liked to know whether they ever had or considered interoperability with the A-10. Army FAC's call it all the time. There must have been an Air Force connection, since at least 4 Air Force Combat Controller's were involved....several with Rangers and Sgt Bray, also JSOC who was inserted (and his story is well known....especially to the men who spent the night trapped in that building). A FAC from either service could call in area fire suppression. Army FAC keeps it simple.

      IMHO, the biggest mistake the Army brass ever made was declimg the USAF's offer to give them all the A-10 Warthogs in 1992. With long experience, the Marine Corps has understood the fundamental value of an indigenous fixed wing close air support (CAS), interdiction, tanker, and theater transport air component. During Vietnam the Army negotiated away its right to a fixed wing component.
      The USAF leadershio has always hated the CAS mission, thus the offer to give the A-10 fleet and by assocation the CAS mission capability to the Army. During and after Vietnam the USA did a fantastic job of develooing its own rotary wing CAS capability, but there are crucial things fixed wing aircraft like the Warthog can do for their brothers/sisters on the ground that helicopters can't. As a Vietnam Marine Corps attack pilot, I know that whenever I would have been called upon to support grunt Marines in contact on the ground, there was no risk so great that would have kept me from providing that accurate firepower. That is a fundamental strength of "the air-ground team" made famous by the Marines. It's a crying shame that the US Army has been denied the same capability.

    • @earlyprimate
      @earlyprimate Год назад

      @@FighterPilotPodcast True the Army does have a limited number of fixed wing aircraft as noted in the link, but that is limited to a maximum weight and the aircraft's role. The Key West Agreement has been modified since the original, but I am willing to bet the V-22 exceeds the weight maximum and would be performing a role (as per the discussion) against what is defined in the Key West Agreement.

    • @andrews2990
      @andrews2990 Год назад

      @@earlyprimate The Key West Agreement is just that- an agreement. It’s a fickle policy decision that can be amended or ignored at will. That is a reference to the 101st. The 160th lineage and their current base at ft Campbell is shared with the 101st. The rakkasans are a storied 101st infantry brigade. The nightstalkers know rakkasans, and the rakkasans know nightstalkers. They are truly historic and their lineage is legendary.
