tango died when the founder of the studio Shinji mikami leaved the studio with alot of people directly after hifi-rush release. The studio as been an empty shell with no leader since hifi-rush release
Arkane austin died when 90% of all veteran developper leaved after prey release and during the developpement of Firefall ( that was way before the purchase of microsoft )

Mass Effect was EA/BioWare. Xbox isn't successful enough to make those sorts of deals any more and those devs aren't for sale, now even Bungie has gone over to PlayStation.

This should’ve been a major red flag that people haven’t talked about enough. Prior to the start of this gen he had an interview with the same Ryan where he said they didn’t lose Xbox One generation due to the quality of their games (keep in mind, he said this the same year PS had exclusives like Nioh 2, FF7R, Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2, which is better output than the entire XB1 7-year lineup) but other reasons.
Now after the Redfall disaster he comes out again saying great games don’t sell consoles and that everyone is locked in due to digital libraries. At the same time Nintendo has their best console ever which launched with 0 backwards compatibility, and both Sony and Nintendo still have anywhere between 40-60% of game sales happening physically (which means people can sell them if they really wanna switch platforms).
The guy is just straight up clueless and wouldn’t be able to identify and nurture amazing games if his life depended on it, because he doesn’t believe in great games.
Big companies buying out studios just needs to stop.

The thing is - it's the correct choice. Getting into consoles in the first place was a massive blunder for Microsoft. Microsoft's revenue comes primarily from Windows. They inexplicably believed the "PC is dead" nonsense and went into consoles, competing with themselves and neglecting their own platform so badly that Valve was able to set up shop on their lawn and create a monopoly in an OS they don't even control.
The Xbox was a mistake. Microsoft should have always focused their game development efforts on PC making it the premiere gaming platform.
And they're just going hope the showcase makes everyone forget

The issue Ryan, is that the very day the ink was dry on the ABK deal. EVERYTHING should have been ready to go directly into Game Pass. Every COD, every Prototype, EVERY game in those studio’s old libraries that wasn’t selling anymore should have went into the service. They even went as far as to turn the old servers back on for many of the old COD games and for what? Subscriptions would have seen a boost from the already 7 Billion a year that they make now.
Would it though? They need to sell new games not get people hooked on old games. XBOX not having much content is an old battle they're still fighting but they have bigger problems now.

gamepass won't save xbox. At this point, gamepass has hit its ceiling. If you haven't bought gamepass yet, you probably never will
The reality is that Gamepass has hit market saturation. The people that don't want to own their games and want to rent them have signed up. Everyone else isn't interested. Microsoft assumed that they'd just keep growing, but vastly overestimated how much the average gamer dislikes subscriptions controlling their entire library.

He's the one who bet the whole future on gamepass which has ended up canabalizing sales and is limiting their ability to fund big game releases due to gamepass subscribers not being enough. What isn’t spoken about enough on IGN is innovation in games. That’s why Xbox is struggling. People would buy an Xbox if it had the killer apps, and it hasn’t since the 360 days. Developers / publishers chase trends today vs trying to create them 15 years ago. Yes, there are some exceptions but innovation in games has really taken a step back over the last 10 years and the industry is suffering for it.

Even if Xbox leadership isn’t making these decisions, they made ones that led to these. The ABK deal was too big, but Xbox heads probably saw the profit there and how it could prove the viability of the platform to Microsoft heads.
Bottom line, Satya said “okay Phil, enough” and since Xbox can’t handle their own house, Microsoft heads have to get involved.
Well if the games don't perform.. I'm sorry you have to close .
One of the studios closed was nominated for game of the year and made profit. That's not the metric they are using. It also wouldn't make sense because game pass exists.
@@jesse1086you’re correct on the fact that Tango had a huge hit with their game. However, it’s been said over and over again, Game Pass is NOT sustainable. They are bleeding money with the service model and unless they had an unrealistic number amount of subs, it’s only going to get worse. Doesn’t help that they spent so much money on buying ZeniMax and ABK. They spent way more than they were allowed to, on top of an already no profit service plan and it’s finally crumbling down faster than they can fix it.

Xbox doesn't need a new CEO. Microsoft does as sadly, Xbox is powerless against its parent. Satya tells Xbox to close studios, Xbox does not get to have a choice in the matter.
It was Microsoft, not Xbox that closed those studios. Plus, those studios were going to be closed regardless of if Microsoft owned them. ZeniMax was in that bad a spot that they were looking at collapse due to overstretching their worldwide resources, such as staff and support.
So many people aren't looking at the cause, instead are thinking emotionally, and the games media are eating it up for views.

Why did people like Phil anyway? Xbox was going down hill ever since he stepped on the scene. Under his leadership Xbox fans have gotten maybe 3 decent games, if that.
He’s the only CEO from the big 3 who frequently appears and speaks in public, and when he does he wears jeans and a gaming shirt referencing some obscure old IP so people fall for it and think he’s a “true gamer” like one of them and not an old bonehead who barely knows how to hold a controller like Jim Ryan. Except ironically Jim Ryan at least knew what made his console thrive: great games, and tried to make sure they had those.
Phil on the other spent his time whining about how the industry isn’t growing and how people are locked in because of digital libraries while Nintendo currently has their most successful console ever despite it having 0 backwards capability. And he was simultaneously chasing a mystical audience of “3bn gamers” who were just a grasp away if only they didn’t need to spend $300-500 on those damn consoles and $60-70 per game.
They basically fell for his charm, and still do, as evidenced by this video where people still believe he’s some sort of pro-gamer CEO who now has to fight and internal battle against Microsoft bean counters.
Because he wears cool shirts and plays Fallout 76.... what else do you need from a CEO for a major entertainment brand?

Xbox is a shell of its former self. Once the pinnacle of gaming standing tall side by side with PlayStation at the top. Now, decrepit and crawling so far behind the competition. PlayStation is king again with Nintendo killing it in their own little happy world.

While it IS true that to climp a ladder you must be willing to step on rungs, Phil Spencer's job is to generate profit, regardless of his character.
Even if the next CoD game comes to Gamepass, bringing all of its previous CoD titles in with it, people are now angry and mistrustful of the XBox brand. Spencer’s tenure is untenable now. He gaslighted us about Redfall, saying he got nothing but positive feedback from the testers of that game, when we’ve since learned that they begged him not to force them to make it, and then begged him for more time rather than releasing a game that patently wasn’t ready. That’s why half of that team, including the studio’s founders, had all left by the time it released.
We already knew he was a liar before this culling of talent. Now, gamers don’t just feel repeated gaslighted and distrusting of Spencer, and his management colleagues, they feel visceral anger at the greed, short-termism and incompetence that his punching a hole through the entire industry.
I’m cancelling my Gamepass subscription and sticking with PlayStation for now.

Xbox has been a shell without a soul for 10 years now. Phill did nothing but harm the industry in general since he came to power. Who’s to say those studios closing weren’t all done with the intention of making the company more manageable. If blizzard and activision were so massive and hard to merge with. Maybe they’re taking the steps they believe is right to complete the merge, and get the reigns back from obscurity.
