Sun Xinyi... What a star! I wish more and more gymnasts paid attention to the details she does in this difficulty preferring cop. What beautiful rings!
99% of these combinations were given a slow connection deduction. These are pretty much some of THE BEST beam routines of the quad. It's just so frustrating. Are the judges expecting robots to do gymnastics? I hope your evaluation is flawed in that regard.
The slow connections deduction can be absolutely brutal, I agree. As far as I’m aware, the goal is to differentiate between directly rebounding, quick connections and connected elements that just aren’t so linked. I believe that I was on the stricter side here, but that rule is one of the reasons that so many E scores end up in the low 8s or high 7s on strong routines ://
I was thinking the same thing. These are actually pretty fluid. This is one of the many reasons that I didn’t wanna go for elite gymnastics lol. I would be beating myself up all the time for unrealistic expectations.
Just wanna let you know that I really appreciate all your videos, I have always been a fan of gymnastics but your videos helped me a lot to learn all about the deductions, can’t wait for the Tokyo ones!!
I'm so happy you like the videos! I hope they're helpful. Regarding the Olympics, I'm super excited, but the IOC would probably kill me if I tried to score an Olympic routine :// we'll see though!
Girls for China for me are the best in the world on beam! Impecable posture, the leaps are out of these world, connections on point. A delite to watch, amazing! hope they do well at the olimpics, they have everything.
The Chinese are the best at connections by far and the quickest. The other girls will get eaten alive by slow connection deductions if this is how the Chinese girls are deducted. The scores would all be like 5 tenths to 7 tenths higher for all these routines if that slow connection wasn’t judged like it is and to think shija li could’ve gotten close to a 16 or even a 16 without those deductions is insane
Yes, I did think that Li Shijia was scored quite harshly, even relative to her compatriots. I imagine another performance like that at Tokyo would nearly guarantee her the gold!
I know I was shocked Li Shiya’s combos were fast to me. As an exgymnast if you could go faster you have to swing into each motion. It’s frustrating to see all the deductions for connections that I didn’t think was slow. Almost like they are trying to just minus points for the sake of it. Her connections looked good to me!!
Thank you for posting this interesting and educational video. I, as with so many others, love watching Chinese beam routines and I come into the game thinking that they are pretty much perfect. For me, it's still going to take a while before I can detect some of those errors! Watch and learn--
I’d love to watch an analysis of one of Kara Eaker’s beam routines (maybe one from upcoming Nationals). Or especially her FX from Classics! It would very interesting.
i completely disagree with the "slow connection" deductions in almost every occasion. 85% of all the connections were some of the quickest i've seen ever. i simply don't see how they could be any faster. Also several gymnasts got deductions for flexed feet, and others didn't when they displayed flexed feet as well. That one tenth could've changed the entire competition so that was frustrating as well.
I find it kind of redundant to award CV and then deduct for slow connection, like you might as well just not credit the connection if the judges are just going to take it away. Makes the D score higher, but lowers the E score. I get that the D and E panel judge separately, so I suppose they can’t really discuss wether or not to credit the combo or deduct for slow connection.
It’s a bit frustrating, but I understand the rationale - it benefits gymnasts with very fast and confident connections, and it also allows for series to stay together if they’re connected but hesitantly done so. For example - a series of three skills is connected for 0.3 CV, but one connection was a bit tentative and loses 0.1. It looks pointless on skills worth 0.1 CV though, I definitely agree there 😅
Sun Xinyi's rings are something else, man! On a side note, does the slow connection deduction really apply for B + B connections? I thought it was only given to connections with CV, so all those split jump + side split jump wouldn't be deducted on it? That's assuming series bonus doesn't really inerfere in that rule.
I'm not sure exactly what the rule is, actually -- the code writes "Poor rhythm in connection (with DV)" is a 0.1 deduction. I assumed that connections in series count as connections with DV, even if the elements are not earning tenths individually, but I could be wrong.
@@budflower5054 it’s just Chinese (or simplified Chinese if you wish), Chinese is a language family of many spoken languages united by a single written system.
The very first gymnast to go got deducted for low landing on her ariel cartwheel. The second gymnast literally had a lower landing and got no deduction? If you pause at their landings it's blatantly obvious so I find that ridiculous. Absolutely amazing editing on the video though, so much appreciated :)
These slow connection deductions are dumb and should not be taken. The difficulty panel already determines if a connection counts or not. The gymnast already loses points if deemed too slow, it makes no sense whatsoever to give double penalty. Especially because it's an artistic/technical choice of exactly how quickly to perform something. Some people can't do things slower because they NEED to utilize speed to connect into another element without a clear pause. People shouldn't be punished for showing languid control and fluidity as opposed to rapidity. Routines shouldn't all be choreographed in exactly the same way; it's fine to not instantly connect every element together.
I know you calculate the scores on the basis of the actual scores awarded by the judges that day, but i'd love to see a consistent scoring from your perspective. That way, we know no bias was at play and this is the score one would come close to (gymnastics is tricky to score) while watching the routine with a keen eye and checking and rechecking the elements from different angles and/or pace, something which judges can't do. Also, on the speed up part, I'd like to watch routines at their normal pace, with all the choreography the way it was.
Wow the Chinese are strong enough to take gold, and silver during the beam finals at the Olympics. If their top two gymnasts preform like this, they will for sure have it in the bag.
Not only are the slow connection deductions harsh, the flexed feet and leg separation deductions are also brutal. How are they supposed to land a double pike or a layout? And Chinese girls have some of the most textbook layouts out there.
Beam scoring is absolutely brutal these days. I remember watching Montreal 2017 and being appalled by the E-scores there. It's honestly gotten a bit better, but it's still SUPER strict 😅
Think lu Yufei got a very generous score. The judges could hammer her for more slow connections, pauses before skills, and low amplitude on some of her leaps (split ring leap especially). Guan Chenchen is pretty good at avoiding pause deductions Also should Zhang Jin get CV for her dismount? And the dismount has to count towards D-score too, so not sure that 6.1 is correct
I feel like a fool for thinking Simone had the beam title locked. I hope she ups her difficulty massively otherwise I cant see her competing with GCC and Li Shijia
Don’t place your bets on one athlete, but definitely don’t count Simone out! She’s super capable and also has a consistency factor that plays to her strengths. It’ll ultimately come down to who is best on that day :)
Based on the constant “slow connection” deduction, it almost makes no sense to even bother with connection bonus since it will always be deducted! Might as well do single skills at a time and not bother. I think the scoring seemed a bit unfair in that regard, I don’t see how the connections on some of those skills could be faster??
Wow, the Chinese need to give a masterclass to the world on how to do ring leaps/jumps. 💍 Also, I hate the pause deduction so much; it seems so redundant. 👿 Great video! 💕

I'm somewhat confused as to how the gymnasts can avoid that slow connection deduction on the leap series. It's not as if they can just ask gravity to bring them back down to the beam faster.
The slow connection is based on the time the gymnast spends on the beam-the FIG wants all direct connections on beam to be rebounding (like an acro series would be). The small pauses taken on the landings, even if I find them elegant and poised, mean that the connection isn't one jump immediately into the next. I hope that makes sense!
I initially downgraded Zhang Jin's Korbut in combination, but I believe the judges credited it. The judges seemed to be quite generous this competition.
While everyone else is doing wolf turns and trying to copy Simone Biles, the chinese have really focussed on the connections and good executions in their routines.
