I can definitely agree that all the reboots can make the main continuity confusing and hard to follow, and that it can be hard to keep up with everything going on in one whole continuity, even though I don't find it that bad of a problem to me personally. I really enjoy Elseworlds because you can essentially do anything with a character in an Elseworlds story, as long as you keep some of the very basic details consistent. I adore stories like Gotham by Gaslight and the Red Son because of how they use characters like Batman and Superman to make interesting stories without having to keep in every single bit of their 80 year history in mind.
8:28 considering how a certain hero clad in red and blue has been treated by editorial, a reboot is sorely needed for them. Looking at you, Lowe and Quesada.
To reboot Spidey, you'd have to reboot the ENTIRE Marvel universe, though that would cause people to just basicaly compare it to how DC constantly reboots the main universe.
The biggest problem with the main continuity is that it never ends. This isn’t just dc but applies to marvel as well. Both dc and marvel continuities never end and because of this there’s to much retcons or time travel or soft reboot etc. in my opinion what u do is give all the characters proper endings and than move on to a new continuity in a new universe all the while the old continuity are still in the multiverse out there. This is why I don’t read comics like that anymore and nowadays just watch movies, animation, and video games.
Exactly! This is what DC did in the 60s and 70s with the JSA. After Golden Age Superman was phased out with the Silver Age Superman who became the main barely changing one whereas the prior got to grow and his worlds status quo didn’t really exist anymore but Earth-2 was only seen sometimes by readers since Earth-1 was what “Counted”. We now had consequences with the original canon. Honestly DC should’ve done this with the New 52. Make Prime Earth as modern as you want and have pre-Flashpoint run parallel as the new “Earth-Two” lineup
I 100% agree. Stories need to end so that the stakes aren't artificial. A huge reason why I prefer anime/manga over comics nowadays. On another specific note... the critique of Batman, where "the criminals always break out 2 weeks later", is because of the never ending nature of the comics.
If you need to keep rebooting your franchises like dc and 3-4 of those reboots have only happened in the last 15 years you’ve got a huge writer problem. You should be able to have consistent characters. If a franchise has so many different reboots that are all canon it will be very hard for a new reader to start, it will just alienates your new and old audiences
I agree with you T.M.M. because, Tom Taylor's recent Nightwing run centered around Nightwing or just Dick Grayson being framed for killing someone in Bludhaven, and well that is something has already happened in the Batman books so yeah, there is a lot more to work with in Elseworlds then there is in the Main Continuity.
I like the continuity, even though I see that your arguments are valid. What I do is take an era of comics and only consider canon from one point to another. For example, I usually read Marvel everything from more or less Avengers disassemble to Secret Wars (2015). What happened before are stories that I don't need to know (and if I need to, they give me a flashback in the comic and that's fine) and what comes after Secret Wars doesn't matter to me.
You're right! I, too, love the main continuity. The different take on those heroes is so interesting though. Things like the Boys and Invincible are just that, though. I think the indies fill that void. How many Superman and Batman copies are there? Same guy tweeked here and there to make something interesting.
When your fave character only has one or two Elseworlds story focused on them that I'm not even really the biggest fan of...yeah I gotta rock with main continuity. I do enjoy Elseworlds stories and appreciate the benefit the freedom of not being burdened by continuity brings.
I think something like earth 27 by Phil-Co could be interesting. in which it doesn't try to change that much stuff about DC but simply simplified the world and characters I don't like everything they done but I do really like the idea
That's kind of why I tune out of both Marvel and DC's main universes frequently unless it's about one of the few character's I follow for those franchises, a major event happens, I hear a certain run is good, or I've grown interested on one of the runs. The issue with the main universes is that they'll never end, there's little substance in terms of consequences as they'll be written away in a few years or a new writer will come on to trash one of my favorite characters.
The problem with elseworlds is that it doesn't focus on charaters I like. For example there is a vampire one that focuses on Damien and Green Arrow. I love that we are focusing on the Arrow family instead of the Bat family in that world but still they chose Nightwing, Barbara Gorden and Damien to shine on when they already have books in the main continuity, I would have rather they shined on Tim Drake, Jason, Duke or even Cassandra
Yeah Elseworlds like the main canon comics and especially the multimedia adaptations in games, shows, movies etc focus way too much on Batman first and his supporting cast secondly as the leads of whatever project
Do you have any recommendations for Elseworld stories? I have read White Knight but there are probably more side stories I need to read. I loved the Dark Knight of Steel run and the DC vs. Vampire run. Both are still going.
I prefer elseworlds, I got introduced to characters like Batman and Superman from movies and games when I was a kid, I wanted to see alternate takes of the characters so elseworlds is when I got into comics
i feel sameway elseworlds story's are better then dc main canon i usually recommend out if canon story's for dc and marvel for people interested in comics
It is kind of like Marvel’s What if, when the story is set in a different reality the characters that everyone knows and loves is suddenly changed by one action no matter how small. Elseworlds is the same they are original stories for example The Murphyverse White Knight saga show a different reality of Batman’s world. Spider-man & Fantastic four: Life story are set in a alternate universe with both characters make one choice that changes everything. Marvel has like a very large multiverse that easily dwarfs the dc multiverse, plus they don’t rely on the their multiverse to make stories.
I can’t get into marvel or dcs main continuity anymore, there are no stakes and nothing matters. They have had a mostly continuous continuity for the last 80 years and there is nowhere left to go when you won’t let characters grow up and change or even die without coming back like nothing happened. It’s why I adore things like elseworlds and even other series like invincible, you can actually get into the story.
This goes for marvel as well but what i dislike about the mainline is the constant reboots, retcons and death/resurrection of characters (im surprised alfred is still dead but wouldn't be surprised if he comes back) The characters can sometimes be so broken writers have to nerf them like flash getting tagged by batman or catwoman. What i like about elseworld stores is that half of these stories have everlasting consequences. Or tries something new without returning to the status quo. Main line just does things you can see a mile a way
I’m with you on Elseworlds>Main Continuity. I’ve always had my own idea of how the universe should be structured and end, my main gripe with Elseworlds is I feel they often end too early. IE I wish something like earth one was a much larger narrative
I completely understand you the same is happening in marvel too and yeah marvel and dc they just don't know what to do with their continuity anymore only reeboting it wiping characters out and bringing in new ones to keep doing it again indefinetely
Batman: The White Knight was such a refreshing breath of fresh air to me when it came out, and I have made it my mission to keep up with everything going on in the White Knight universe, because everything within it has been such a wonderful reading experience for me.
I don't know if you read superhero stories that don't have pictures but I'd like to recommend one of my favorite superhero stories of all time, WORM. It's an original story with original characters and it takes a grounded approach to the question of what if superpowers existed in real life (it's a shitshow). People in the story die and stay dead, powers are creatively used, action is written well, the characters are complex and the plot is multi layered. I will note that its really long and written in an online serial format which may or may not turn you off. Overall, it's a story I would recommend to anyone who likes the superhero genre and a good story.
Also the thing with Elseworlds is that you can give you're characters a defenitive end unlike in the main continuity where you have to keep these characters and stories alive. All-Star Superman, The Dark Knight Returns or Kingdom Come would never happen in the main DC universe because that would mean changing the status quo of your universe. Then there are some exception like when they killed off Barry Allen and Hal Jordan in the 1980s and 90s and Wally West and Kyle Ryner became the new Flash and Green Lantern but even then they eventually brought Barry and Hal back in the late 2000s. With Elseworlds instead you don't have to worry about that and you can easily wrote stories with those characters and don't have to keep running forever and you can give an ending when the writer feel it's the time.
Since you prefer elseworlds to main continuity, what are your thoughts on dcs new absolute universe books (essentially their version of marvels ultimate universe)
Awesome so far. That Batman is wild in the best ways possible and his batmobile is nonsense. Again in the best ways possible 😂 Really loving the look of Superman, the very different origin he has and the fact Wonder Woman has a Final Fantasy type sword.
I do really enjoy how elseworlds are often able to be quick and concise with their stories, as they don't have to worry about always brewing a new plotline. I do want to read some main continuity stuff if it's good, since I'm pretty new to the whole comics thing, but yeah, I don't think I'm gonna be trying to spend time keeping track of all those plotlines, just the stuff which interests me. any recommendations for good elseworlds?
For starters I would go with the Batman the Long Halloween and all the stories that develop from there, Injustice is a fun read and anything from Earth-1!

No convoluted timelines or reading 100 different stories to understand it.

I think for dc elseworlds is better just because everyone and literally everyone not just comic book fans know most of the justice league. The characters are so well known that the expectations are so high. Look at the reaction to bvs, they tried to do something unique with Batman and Superman and everyone hated saying that’s not how Superman and Batman act these people are idiots. Elseworld just gives you more freedom to be original
Elseworlds because the main continuity is a headache at times. Its why I love the original Watchmen and Fables. Don't get me started on the Before stories. The only good Watchmen story after the original is the HBO show.
I hate events. Elseworlds are self contained. Everything i need to know is in that one series. I get a lot of main universe comics, but noncanonicals are my favorites. The Life Stories of Fantastic Four and of Spider-Man. Superman The Space Age and Batman The Dark Age. Superman Year One. The problem is...most of the noncanonicals are the most popular characters. I wish there were more noncanonicals on other characters. And i really wish they'd make them longer. Most of them are only 3 to 12 issues. The Absolute Universe is gonna be different.... cause it is going to have several titles within itself, all of them coming together for events and then a big event with the main universe. But....for right now, I'm really enjoying the three Absolute titles. I'll get Ab Flash too. I think I'll continue to like them and the main universe comics I'm reading. Except for the events. I've accepted that. I almost always find the events meh at best. But i like reading a comic that runs for a long time. 20 to 200 issues. Since the elseworlds types of series never run that long, I buy the main universe and Absolute universe and Ultimate Universe. That way I get longer stories, even tho they usually end up in events. Although, The Immortal Hulk run was pretty long, and I don't remember it getting pulled into any event. So, they do some in continuity stories that aren't interrupted by events.
My problem with Elsworlds is that they tend to be stories that fall short. I don't compare it to the main DC continuity, but if I want to see a well-developed story with great character development, I'm going to read Vinland Saga. The Elsworlds I read don't hit me as hard as other stories in other media that take their time to tell their story. Except for the New Frontier, that comic is wonderful
Because in elseworlds we can stop woke pretending that Superman gonna marry some normie chick, we all know that it would be Wonder Woman, without circlejerking Batsy and his family😅
Alr hear me out, what if they destroy the main continuity and make the absolute universe the main continuity or combine the main continuity and absolute universe.Just a thought.

Dc has been stuck on Earth-0 since 1985 after crisis on infinite earths. They need to get off of it.
Okay, the next continuity shift changes it to earth 0.1
That their main earth
Jack Knight aka Starman has an ending. And DC let him keep his ending.
Which is extremely rare

You lost at me at marvel has never had a reboot. I almost choked eating on jello.
Eat more jello
My problem with else worlds it not canon so I don’t care about it The main continuity always connected too a larger narrative
Darkseid created the absolute universe
