Belarus leader Lukashenko tells BBC the country may have helped migrants into the EU - BBC News

  • Belarus' authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko has told the BBC he “won't stop" migrants travelling through Belarus to reach the EU, because "the West stopped talking to us”.
He spoke to the BBC's Steve Rosenberg, in an exclusive interview, inside the presidential palace.
The EU, Nato and the US have accused the Belarus leader of luring migrants to the border with the false promise of easy entry to the EU. Something he has denied.
Mr Lukashenko has been in power since 1994 but his re-election as president last year was widely discredited by the West and not recognised by the EU.

And their rule means poverty, corruption, police state kleptocracy which is much worse than westerns systems. Blackmailing Ukraine and using immigrants and for blackmail using them as humans shields is disgusting and adolf like.

I just watched the version of this interview released by Belarussian channel, which is 8 minutes longer, and then this version. Some of the things ommited here:
    - Lukashenko says they found pesticides in the water cannons used by the polish on immigrants
    - he goes into more detail talking about the circus at the last US elections
    - when he talks about the ratio of his votes to the number of protesters, he tells Steve to do the math
    - gives more details on what Kolesnikova did and why he is not the person to care for revenge
    - on the subject of talks with the opposition, he says he accepts there are people in Belarus who see it differently how things should be run in the country, but these people are fundamentally different from those who hide in Poland and Lithuania, those are just traitors to the state of Belarus. He also draws comparisons with Russia, where Putin sees communists and other parties as opposition and keeps a dialogue with them, but not with people like Navalny, who are nothing but foreign agents
    - the interview doesn't end on 'But I acted according to our laws'. He adds: 'You don't like this. But I've told you what I think, how I understand it and what 87% of our people think today. They have seen your face. They have seen your democracy, freedom of speech, they've tasted it and here we go, you've witnessed it too, how you poured chemicals on poor unarmed people. Here, they have seen it'. Then while they are still seated they actally have a pretty cordial conversation where Lukashenko invites Steven to come again any time, but only if it would be broadcast live without editing. They get up and continue talking about the situation on the border, Lukashenko admits there could have possibly been some soldiers who helped the migrants cross to Poland but he doesn't blame them because it's a human thing to do. There is no ominous music at the end.
Also, the sbtitles make Lukashenko sound more rude than he actually is.
    - 'stop being dumb' he never uses the word dumb. The verb is 'темнить' which translates to 'obfuscate', 'muddle', i.e. confuse somebody on purpose. Could be an unintentional mistake, since there is a similar adjective 'темный' which means 'uneducated'
    - "there's no sense in your head" the right translation would be 'it doesn't make sense to you [and your leaders]' not much difference in meaning, but a vast difference in grace.
