- In the days leading up to and following the reveal of Min Min for Smash Ultimate, many have taken to the internet to discuss whether or not Min Min was a good pick as the ARMS rep, as well as who they believe it should or should not be. In this video, we will do all of the above.

It seems it was only true for the first pass it was explicitly said during joker's that the first dlc pack would be characters new to the smash series. Many just figured since nothing different has been said about the second pack that it would be the same as the first. Turns out that's not the case so now it's open season on spirits.

I thought they were going to do something like what they did with hero where it was one move set but the character costumes were different characters
You can't make them alternate skins because the characters have different abilities outside of just their ARMS.
That wouldn't really work, because unlike the Dragon Quest heroes who share the same general abilities in their source games, all of the Arms characters have multiple different abilities that are unique to themselves and are a part of their identity as characters. It'd be like trying to make Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, and Dhalsim into costumes for one moveset.
You could technically do that with certain characters with similar body types (Springman, Ribbon Girl, Min Min and Ninjara for example), but that would result in a generic, non-representative and boring character.
Bowser Jr. works because the main fighter is the Koopa Clown Car rather than the Koopalings themselves, and Hero because the 4 of them share similar habilities in general and don't have any kind of special powers or moves that separates them from the rest.

I completely agree, I would LOVE to see Dr. Coyle in smash I feel that most people that have played the game know the amount of potential and absolute power Dr. Coyle would have in smash bros with her extra arm, invisibility, and levitation and with her inclusion she would be the very first female villain in smash bros besides Wendy-O-Koopa I guess, not to mention she's really important in the story and lore of Arms
I legit thought Coyle was gonna be the one, but Min Min translates better into a Smash fighter.
As cool as that would be, it would probably just not translate well. Giving a zoner peach's float is way too op, and just imagine min min with a third arm. Invisibility is supposed to be a chaos thing as the only fighter that uses it is Hero from his hocus pocus.

It's pretty clear in terms of fleshing out a Moveset no one other than Min Min has what it takes. Like the kicks really make up for gaps in the kit and give her options she wouldn't have otherwise.

No guys, with her "arms". Actual non-springlike arms, Twintelle does not have her "ARMS" ability on her actual arms. It would be cool sure, but having the playable ARMS rep not even have the ARMS on her arms does make it clash thematically. Min Min still wins out a bit.

Honestly I wanted Max Brass, but after comparing Min-Min's in-game abilities to the other Fighters, and how they would translate, hers is the least stupid. Take Spring-Man, the guy gets a permanent buff at low health. Imagine Terry at 100%, but every hit is Buster Wolf. Or Max Brass, who continuously can gain super armor (or the Heavies, Mummy and Mechanica, who have it by default), Mechanic can hover. It's like making Simon a heavy and giving him Peach float. Helix's would be cool, but obnoxious. Twintelle has Witch Time AND Peach Float, Dr. Coyle would turn invisible, probably also Peach Float, and can summon a third arm. Ribbon Girl has four jumps. Again, just give Simon four jumps and see how fun that is. Misango....jesus. Ninjara would teleport everytime you touched his shield, Kid Cobra would have up to four-five dodge rolls, Lola Pop would have a Rebellion Gauge while being able to still move. Springtron can negate any sort of attack (which isn't better than Min-Min, but it's literally just Palutena Down Special, and not a gimmick), Byte and Barq....idk
Min-Min just buffs an arm and reflects projectiles, we could've gotten something MUCH more toxic, combined with most of Min-Min's current kit

I wanted Twintelle, not cuz of the booty (though it is a bonus lol) but because I love her design and her ability to still use her normal arms too. Though realistically, even if she did win the popularity contest, I agree that she wouldn’t be the best pick due to having her ARMS ability in her hair. So I am perfectly happy with Min Min as she is still adorable and a great pick as it is the fan favorite (of people who actually play the game not the twitter mob) and the director requested it.

The whole race issue is stuipid because smash isnt about that, its about getting the most iconic game characters together for one big celebration of their games, not a political discussion

I love Twintails for her design, personality, and her uniqueness on not having the arms trait in her will arms but the fact that she can use her hair for distance and then her actual arms for close combat it's a really good concept but I don't want her in smash mainly for the reasons you said it wouldn't make sense, but might people turn it into a race issue and I hate that mindset.
However, I like Min Min more because of her cool design, personality, and background as the tournament winner and her tactical mind very smart girl! Plus what she represents is also amazing and why she does what she does, she very hard working what she does doing two jobs all at once is amazing I couldn't do it. I have so much admiration for the character despite being fictional. If I were to apply it to a real person with the hardworking smart type I want to be that type of person!

While not a bad choice if we were really choosing a second character to help better represent the series. Why Rouge? She just doesn't feel like a go to for representation of the series and Twintelle is a similarly offbeat choice
They would by no means be a "waste" but don't feel like prime characters to represent the series further

I mean something I haven't seen Twintelle fans really argue about that much is her ARMS. Since it is part of her hair instead of her actual arms, certain actions such as pummeling, grabbing items, and even small things like the clapping animation during a victory screen if she doesn't win would seem more natural. And it'd be kinda weird to some in general (even those who love ARMS) to see springy arms clapping without it being awkward. And maybe it'd add a bit more to the moveset. And also, timestop is a thing (though it's more like a time slow down) added with the arms mechanic (probably into her dodging?).
I'd personally argue for twintelle because of certain aspects like the ones I pointed out.
Sad to say most arguments towards how Twintelle should've been the rep regard her race, her sex, or her figure. I was also bummed out that Twintelle didn't make it, but hey, Min-Min is no slouch.

I originally picked Twintelle because of that. I thought it would be easier to make a character with her because she has normal arms. I serverely underestimated Sakuai's creativity.

As much as people don’t want to keep hearing this, someone is still going to be angry with this video and others so just hear me out.
There are a lot of people that were upset that it wasn’t Twintelle, because she would’ve been Smash’s first black skinned (by default) character. I know it’s annoying and SJW-y to point it out, especially for the people that say that the people who put Min Min in over her are racist to black people and owe representation to black people (especially with Black Lives Matter and all that). But as a black person myself, I’m not too upset Twintelle didn’t get in and I’m not going to call Sakurai, Mr Yabuki, the Smash Team, or Nintendo racist for not putting her in as one gift of respect to them in these trying times. It would’ve been nice if it was Twintelle, but I honestly think it’s for a completely innocent, non racist reason to why Min Min was chosen instead, Mr Yabuki just wanted her in, that’s it.
So for those who feel like it’s a missed opportunity that they didn’t pick her as their first (not alt) black character, especially since they were really close to, I want to kindly, respectfully, sympathetically say this, it’s fine if you think that way, it would’ve been nice for her to get in, but it’s not the end of the world nor is it a betrayal to black people everywhere if it doesn’t, it doesn’t make Sakurai or anyone else immediately racist for it. Besides Min Min is at least the first Chinese Smash fighter, so I don’t think it’s as fair to right her off as another generic white character when they could’ve picked a black character. Any of the Arms characters would’ve been fine regardless of who they were, or what skin color they were. I personally don’t care about it that much, I just care if they’d be a cool character. I’m African American and I’m excited Min Min got in.

I agree. I think people take this too far. The characters were already predetermined and would get in. It's good to exercise rights, but we need not make such an issue if none exists in the first place. The ARMS controversy should just die down, and we all should be glad that Sakurai and the team are making DLC for this game in the first place. I will be glad or not care with anyone who gets into Smash.

Honestly it was the moveset and the fact she had real arms is why I wanted Twintelle. It would overall be easier to implement her. Give her melee, maybe a float, and he arms be her specials. But it’s fine, nothing to get upset over. Missed chance honestly, would’ve liked a different black than Diddy and Donkey by default in the game. Min min cool to though. She is a great addition to the cast

Nope Yabuki wouldn't have minded at all if she was added. He just happens to love Ramen even more so he chose Min Min. In past interviews Mr. Yabuki has said that he wanted multiple different characters in Smash. He said mentioned Ninjara because he likes ninjas, he mentioned Spring man because he is his first character, he mentioned Ribbon girl because he loves her multi jump ability and he mentioned Twintelle too because he liked her design because how unique it was from the other characters.
No. Twintelle wasn’t added because she was never a choice. It’s was obvious they focused on Springman, Ninjara, and Min Min there.
Also, Twintelle isn’t sexual. Having a large butt isn’t a sexual thing unless you make it that way.

As a black guy myslef i had no expectations for anyone of our race to get in smash let alone anything made by people from asia i never get mad about us not existing in anything of theirs i watch dragonball there isn't anyone black as a character except uub who is claimed to be black by fans but i don't know if he is really because of his hair being straight like the darkskin people in naruto. People in Asia knows very little of us some think we naturally have straight hair some only knows how we are portrayed on the media some think that our skin tone always matches our biological parents (which some people of every race thinks). I never expected to see marina in splatoon 2, Carole from carole and tuesday, neither pokemon characters in the series and games but excited they are there.

@@Xeno-The-Wanderer no i haven't really watch dragonball with kid and teen goku. and no on the hair our hair is not straight unless we use products to straighten it out. the only people who can have skin tone that relatively match ours and have straight hair are indians hispanics and native americans. Yeah I honestly thought Min Min was perfect for the job, perfectly representing the game's mechanics while also having a very unique design to set her apart from other fighting game characters. Spring Man and Ribbon Girl as well as Max Brass all fall into that category in a way of being mostly generic fighting game characters, just with extendable arms. The fact that Min Min is so unique compared to the rest (I mean she literally has spaghetti arms), as well as the unique selection of equipment for her as standard with the dragon arm and such.

I don't know why you people even respond to Twitter crap like that, some people just like to stir up issues. As a darker skinned person, I do wish it was Twintelle. I do like Min Min, and as someone who knows Chinese, I think it's cool to have a Chinese speaking character. However, excluding pallet swaps, every human character in Smash is White/light-skinned Asian. I definitely don't think skin color is a major concern here, but at this point in the series, there's no reason why we shouldn't have a dark-skinned character. Twintelle is just cool, aside from being a first party dark-skinned female, she's unique as she punches using her hair, also she for some reason speaks French, which is pretty cool. I wouldn't call Nintendo racist, but my issue is that she was probably my last hope for having a character of dark skin to join Smash
I wouldn't give up hope. Hang in there my friend. Especially in fighting games though, I've always found myself never worrying about what they look like. My favorite street fighter characters are Ryu, Dudley, Guy and Rashid, and that probably says enough.
I like how Misango is so irrelevant, he's not even mentioned.

Master Mummy is a beast but just as I left out Kid Cobra, it's because their motives are somewhat unrelated to ARMS as a sport.
He is a big tanky guy who has very little mobility. Mobility is probably why he was never considered.

LittleCart He is pretty much the only heavy (maybe max brass too). For a mobility centered game a slow moving fight would be strange. He was my personal pick but I figured it would’ve happen.
I just wanted twintelle because of her special ability. Imagine being able to power up on the side of the map, then spike someone. And, I know y’all are gonna be like “oh it’s just because of her looks” I literally cannot care less about looks. I just want an interesting character. Min min is still good.
But like…arms…the game arms…the only human character with the ability who doesn’t actually use her arms in battle…

On top of that, from a game design stand point Min Min was the best choice. Samurai loves representing a games mechanics in a fighter's move set. But if you start arms reps off with Spring man or Ribbon Girl, then you have to take into account both arms when including the various weapons. And considering the use of A and B for the left and right arms, it would be awkward to sacrifice two potential attack buttons for arm switch buttons.
But Min Min easily bypasses all of that. Because of her ability to turn one of her arms into a dragon, it makes perfect sense to make one of the arms exclusively the dragon while down B only changes one of the arms. Now bot the player and the devs don't have to worry about managing both arms, and future reps won't need t incorporate that same potential complexity if they had been the first rep.
Further more, Min Min's kick abilities also add more to her kit while other characters don't have as much stuff to incorporate into a move set.
I still like that Min MIn got in, i will admit i would still loved to see Twintelle cause (besides being mt main) would have been interesting to see since she has her aura to slow down punched not to mention normal arms to hold items, still im just glad a rep is in smash in general, i really loved ARMS and hope a sequel comes soon if any
Twintelle has an inherent disjoint with her ARMS having a head-level position, she can float, she has a Witch Time effect, and one of her signature ARMS is an advancing offensive barrier.
Chalk that up with the range on a two-dimensional field of movement, hand that there's a solid *_fuck_*_ no._

I think Spring Man had a lot going for him, and really nothing against him. Min Min just happened to have more going for her, being the producer's favorite. Hopefully he makes it in one day
I agree with everything but Dr. Coyle being a main candidate. I'm pretty sure no villain was added to smash without a protagonist from the same game already existing as a fighter. Since this is the first ARMS character (And probably the only one), the antagonist wouldn't be nearly as likely.

it was supposed to release almost 2 years ago but it kept getting put on hiatus. no idea where it's at in production, or if it's ever even coming out.
I figured hair lady out, so in the game in gallery if you go onto the picture labeled 'arms lab confidential 7-8' it talks about these special masks that the fighters wear that let them control their 'arms' ability through eye movement or something, so they leve a spiral shape on the iris and hair lady has it which makes me think she has a modified mask for her hair that let's her control it in an arm like fashion, also I believe she's killed anyone who trys to find out how her ability works since the reporters that investigate never return
Your whittling down of the characters was pretty similar to how I went through the possible characters with a friend of mine (who hadnt played much ARMS) the day of the stream, settling on 3 likely scenarios:
1. Spring man gets in as the games most prominent mascot, and they swap out the Spring man assist trophy with springtron
2. Min Min gets in due to the Party Crash Bash, general popularity and having unique mechanics that can be ported to smash easier
3. Max Brass gets in, being a Large boss character that have seen a surge of in Smash Ultimate, and being large and slow to balance out the crazy range
I was betting on Max Brass myself, but I'm happy it turned out to be Min Min as shes one of my favourite ARMS characters.

Because he appear on the box art of the game. I never really bought into him being that face of the franchise cause arms is still a new franchise. It has a long way to go to decide who the face of the game. From the looks of it min min should be the face of the franchise cause everyone seems to like her a lot.
To be fair, all they would need to do is retexture the assist trophy with Springtron's appearance and then that problem no longer exists.
I mean yeah, but it would debunk the stupid rule of "if a character is an assist trophy, they can't be a fighter." There has only really been 1 rule, that being "the character must originate from a game"

I think that I am one of the few people who likes Misango and wanted him. I know he is a DLC character, but his mask mechanic for me would have done some Shulk type of character (Other thant that I like him a lot for his design, he reminds me of Star Platinum from JoJo [no, i'm not a weeb, I only like JoJo]) . I imagine him as some middleweight character, with his 3 poison weapon, as some ranger/ledge trapper. Similar to the Belmont, but basically an "more Risk More Reward" character. He would not have a great speed (exept when he uses his blue mask), but if you manage to stay at distance you can dominate without being touched.
I like having a ARMS character, I'm not Upset of Min Min being the choice, I know is more recognizable and more Popular than Misango, I only like to imagine him in smash. Blease do not be upset at me qwq

I agree, the fact that Sakurai considered either Min Min or Ninjara strongly suggests he went for the Party Crash Bash results. Also, the fact that he got to choose the character or even Mr. Yabuki, suggests that Nintedo were lenient on this DLC character, as long as it was representative, I would assume. Unlike Byleth, which seemed like a character chosen strictly by Nintendo.
But the biggest factor is, in my theory, that the ARMS rep was chosen as DLC to give ARMS a second lease on life. We can probably expect a big DLC update OR a sequel later this year. For that reason, putting in a character that's representative of the IP OR a mascot was of utmost importance. That's why Spring, RIbbon, Min, Ninjara and Max Brass made the most sense, imho. From there, it was only a question of who got to choose the character, Sakurai or Nintendo -- and it looks like Sakurai was given the choice :)
I wanted Dr. Coyle because her arms leave a lot of creativity for how she could use them for attacks so she could’ve had a more normal smash move set of the devs wanted, we just kinda need more villains in Smash Bros to begin with, also the points you brought up in the video

Master Mummy is so underappreciated too. A Heavy DLC fighter that could heal while blocking is quite a unique fighter as well, makes me sad he didn't appear in the video too.
as a black person i would feel more offended if nintendo added a black character just because of george floyd because this was announced way earlier before that and if they changed up the character just because of that i would get really frustrated and annoyed let nintendo keep their innoncence

The ARMS rep needed to be a popular/iconic base-game character that was a good representation of what ARMS is. Min Min, Spring Man, Ribbon Girl, Ninjara, Max Brass, and Dr. Coyle were really the only viable options.

I legitimately was hoping for Max Brass as well, glad I wasn't alone, but after watching this, I see why min min makes the most sense
Min min is perfect for smash for 3 reasons
1- She is popular
2- She uses his arms similar to the other characters meaning that she represents the concept of the Game
3- She knows Kung-fu, and she uses his legs along side her arms hability, which means that Sakurai can also use more traditional fighting Game moves in her desing (they Even give her the Chun-li kicking attack as a close range option)
Wasn’t Springman and Ninjara popular the same way but with different abilities
