Most people don't know that Madonna sang this song in tribute to her mother, whom she lost at the tender age of five years old. Her vocals are so raw and emotional. You start to understand her pain while singing this song in the studio. The gasp and crying towards the end of the song, reveals a very much vulnerable Madonna. The pain and desperation of losing a mother so young and wanting to be sheltered by her. Remember, Madonna was only 23 or 24 years old when she recorded this song. The hurt was still there. I'm sure as the years have gone by the pain has lessen but you never get over losing your mother. I understand. I lost my mother when I was 14yrs old of breast cancer, during the time this album was released, and I still get very emotional when I think about my mom, and how I would grow up without her or get to enjoy her company as an adult.
This was a very brave vocal approach which we have rarely seen since.Madonna’s lower and higher registers each have unique charms. She must have really believed in this song to want to do this.
Exactly! I'm like, wow, i didnt know she could do all that!😄 then she recorded it twice and fans tells me she still does it live! This song has a life of its own
👄🎙 Revisiting this reaction because I love Madonna’s version of this song. So true your comparison of Miss Ross and Madonna. Madonna herself has mentioned how much she admired Diana as a vocalist and a strong woman in the industry. It’s true of course that there are smoother, fuller, more effortless vocalists, but with those singers there’s something of the spectacle to the listening experience (to mix metaphors a little 👁👂). Singers like Madonna, where you feel the hunger and muscular PUSH in the voice, these are the vocalists that take us along WITH them for the ride. It’s less of an audience experience of wonderment and more a sense that we’re involved in the drama of the song and singer. I’d compare it to the dramatic arc for a film character. If the protagonist has all they need at the beginning of the story, there’s nothing to magnetise us to the plot, but if we feel some struggle and ultimate triumph, we’re right there with them. There are truly exceptional vocalists who do this too, like Streisand’s dramatic emotional truth, but these are very rare and even then I feel there’s something distant about the sheer virtuosic quality of the voice. It’s wonderful but sometimes you want to feel the earth under a singer’s feet. Madonna is the most successful female pop vocalist in history, and her flaws have been as much a part of that success as her talents. A lot of aspects of her career have been like that. You have this striking, but not conventionally pretty, girl from a humble background who took her raw dance talent and even rawer voice, and marshalled it all into a singular iconic story that seduced the world. Of course we can’t forget her intellect, wit, artistic taste, business acumen, rock solid work ethic and incredible pop instinct as a writer, collaborator and producer. But if she’d had stunning show-off vocals from the start, I don’t think she’d have that relatable tough street appeal, that cred she’s never fully lost, and (both vocally and narratively) we wouldn’t feel so involved in the RISE.
This was 1984, her voice imo improved and matured alot in the 90s where imo was her peak around the Ray Of Light era in the late 90s but this vocal performance proves she's always had it right from the start and even her more girlish young vocals still slay. She's so underrated as a vocalist. She can definitely sing!
So true.. And ver voice got even better when she had undergone vocal training for Evita.. It really showed om her Ray Of Light album- particularly in the song Frozen
I think this 1984 version of this song by Madonna was the first ballad she’s recorded (included in her Like A Virgin album) and one of the rare covers she’s recorded-this one of the original 1978 release by the soul/R&B group Rose Royce performed by female lead singer Gwen Dickey. This song was a personal favorite of pre-fame Madonna as the sentiments of the ballad resonated deeply with her feelings after her beloved mother prematurely died at an early age when she was age 5 which would haunt her, and her relationship with her father became estranged after he married their housekeeper. Nile Rodgers, who worked with Madonna to produce 8 of the 9 songs on Like A Virgin album, recalled in an interview that Madonna “was overcome by emotions and she started crying” near the end of the song during the actual recording of it with a live orchestra and that he decided to leave that memorable moment in the record. In 1985 Madonna recorded her first original ballad, Crazy For You, for the movie, Desperately Seeking Susan, which song she’d performed live during her Virgin Tour with such emotive intensity and soulful style similar to her earlier version of Love Don’t Live Here Anymore. Madonna reworked and remixed Love Don’t Live Here…in the version she included in her 1995 ballads compilation album, Something To Remember. She made a music video of this reworked version in early 1996, shot in an abandoned downtown hotel in Buenos Aires during a break in the filming of Evita. I love both ‘84 and ‘95 versions of this ballad and her live concert performance of it during the 2015-16 Rebel Heart tour. I enjoyed your wonderful reaction to this video.
Her ballads are fan favorites. She puts lots of emotion in her interpretations. She has so many, but Take a Bow and it's sequel You'll See are some of her best ballads. (There are videos for both.)

“EVITA” soundtrack for the movie of the same title where she won best actress at the golden globe. There’s a lot of good songs that challenged her vocal prowess. You must love me was an original song in that movie that awarded by Oscar Academy as the best song of the year from a movie. She really worked hard for that movie since almost all the dialogue were done in singing. Good job girl for this journey with Madonna. I’ve seen 5 of her live concert performances and gee incomparable. The energy and her dedication is beyond human, for the sake of her artistic presentation. Not the greatest voice, okay granting, but who among the female singers in history sold more records than her? Each one of us can sing, there are some exceptional voices in the world, but what’s beautiful for me might not beautiful to you. Now, since her music sold more than those belters and divas that can hit the highest note you can never imagine, there’s something in Madonna’s voice that is uniquely hers alone. She’s a storyteller, people can relate to her songs and loving it. For me, she sings from the heart and very truthful about life, and issues in the world. A visionary artist, she’s always ahead of her time. Bashed, called names, but guess what? She’s still here and people can’t stop talking about her. Every time she’s into a controversy, and when the people become so obsessed about her, she’s already gone and another envelope is opened. She’s the greatest chameleon of the 20th century. Next! I went to see the Rebel Heart Tour concert in London in 2016 - and she sang this live - she sounded amazing, and with an appropriately dramatic context during the performance. She coupled it with a new song called HeartBreak City - it worked very well.
Empress, I swear you teach me stuff! I never knew Madonna covered Rolls Royce! Now I'm a old Motown head, so this doesn't even compare, but as you said a good effort by the Material Girl
I saw an interview by someone who was in the studio when she laid the track for this and by the time she was done, she was crying. They say she got totally caught up in the emotions of the song.
Oh my God back in the day I used to sit by my radio just waiting for this song to come on that was when you couldn’t pay for Napster or anything like that you had to wait for that shit to come on the radio. Those were the days
I was 9 when this was released and already a huge madonna fan. I didn't as a young boy concern myself with credits and I lived to my 38th year before I realized this was a cover of a 78 Rose Royce track
Hopped on over here again because of a comment from your Over and Over reaction. Madonna is not the greatest vocalist, but she made so much out of the voice that life has given her. Her voice sounds so vulnerable and compelling at once.

As a lifelong M fan, I’d say skip the 1995 remix, because it’s the same vocal track, which is amazing, but it’s just remixed with a mid-tempo rnb loop. They’re pretty similar. I’d review the live rebel heart tour version of this song, where it’s mixed with a great rebel heart track, heartbreakcity. Madonna has amazing ballads. You should react to live to tell, power of goodbye, and I want you (Marvin Gaye cover).
Her ballads are amazing. Her voice is unique, and in my opinion her best vocal performance is on this song, even though You’ll see, Live to Tell, Like A Prayer and Papa don’t preach are nice too. Sooner or Later at the Oscars also show her voice singing live. Also Ray of Light album showed her vocal training she had for her film Evita. She has 4 versions of this song. 1. Original (the one you just reacted) 2. 1996 version from Something to Remember album 3. Official Video version (mixed) 4. Dance mix version She performed a segment on her Rebel Heart Tour.
Your Madonna reactions are bringing me life!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Defo recommend the remake and video for her ballad album “Something To Remember” really cute video too as she was pregnant with her first child Lourdes hence why she spends most of it out of focus and hid behind a pillar! You can’t even notice a bump tbh. It was shot in a building that had been shut down across from where she was filming her movie “Evita”... defo recommend it ❤️❤️❤️

Welcome darlin. One day when you hear the original one from Rolls Royce You can compare. The original is nice. But for me it can’t compare to Madonna’s version. Madonna’s vocals in that song are just beautiful! Very powerful, they soar.
Great video. I enjoyed the song as much as your face. Madonna is really dramatic here. She gives each song the emotion it needs. See/hear her frenetic trumpet voice in "Ray of Light" and compare to the uplifting cotton voice in "Love Profusion" or the playful "Beautiful Stranger".

I think the "Something to Remember' version from the 90s is the same vocal track, but they just remixed the production. Both are great in their own ways. Why redo the vocals when they are among her best ever recorded?
There is no singer that can emote like Madonna...what she lacks in vocal power she more than makes up for in her delivery. This is absolutely amazing. When she sang this live in 2015 during the Rebel Heart tour, my hear melted. AMAZING! QUEEN MADONNA!
Too bad the only time I saw her was later in New York...it was her last night and I think she was just so tired....and it wasn't great and we paid $200 a ticket.
EMP, I love your style, but Diana was a fabulous singer. This is also seriously great studio vocal by Madonna, but she is not nearly as good live. But she still puts on a great show. She is an average professional singer, but Diana is very gifted.

Meh, this is one of her weaker ballads. The original by Rose Royce is still the best. This is one of the few moments where Madonna does a cover song and her version do not equal or rival the original.

I love your reactions and you are beautiful too like Madonna Queens ❤❤❤
Wow, thank you!😍 i hope you subscribed 😊
Very haunting she actually does a better job on this track.
Ooo i think I'll taks your advice 😏. I'm Amazed she still performs this song! She must really like it 🤩
@@EmpressReacts There's a cool video of "I Want You", the Marvin Gaye cover, as well. Plus it was co-produced/remixed by Massive Attack.
I recommend the rebel heart tour performance of this song/heartbreak city!
thanx for the recommendation!❤
Her ballads are amazing. Her voice is unique, and in my opinion her best vocal performance is on this song, even though You’ll see, Live to Tell, Like A Prayer and Papa don’t preach are nice too. Sooner or Later at the Oscars also show her voice singing live. Also Ray of Light album showed her vocal training she had for her film Evita.
She has 4 versions of this song.
1. Original (the one you just reacted)
2. 1996 version from Something to Remember album
3. Official Video version (mixed)
4. Dance mix version
She performed a segment on her Rebel Heart Tour.
4 Versions! Wow! She must really like this song 🥰😄. I have to listen to the 96 version and this Sooner or Later song, it is recommended alot
It was shot in a building that had been shut down across from where she was filming her movie “Evita”... defo recommend it ❤️❤️❤️
😍 glad you're enjoying! I find this lady so interesting that I decided to do a chronological journey f her albums, so I'm def gonna get to that album but idk how soon as I'm still on the first album😂💯
@@EmpressReacts I love how you really feel the music and don’t just sit there 🤣even the umbrella gets involved hehe! Also, super impressed with how quickly you remember lyrics girl! 😮 definitely a while off yet, but can’t wait to join you on your journey of one of the few living legends left! Long live the 👑
@@blakey2408 😂 exactly the umbrella likes to join in on the action from time to time 😍Thanx! So glad to have your Madonna insights on this journey
Ohhh Empress still one of my fav reactions of yours 👍😀
Yay! Thank you!
Welcome darlin. One day when you hear the original one from Rolls Royce You can compare. The original is nice. But for me it can’t compare to Madonna’s version. Madonna’s vocals in that song are just beautiful! Very powerful, they soar.
REACT TO MADONNA’S “YOU’LL SEE” Music video. Beautiful ballad.
noted ✅😊
Nice choice, I forgot about that song.
🥰
Great video. I enjoyed the song as much as your face. Madonna is really dramatic here. She gives each song the emotion it needs. See/hear her frenetic trumpet voice in "Ray of Light" and compare to the uplifting cotton voice in "Love Profusion" or the playful "Beautiful Stranger".
🥰 thanks and i'll check out those songs soon! Madonna really impressed me here
👏👏👏👏
😍😍😍😍
Wow! You went waaaay back!
😂 i'm trying to experience the Madonna journey and this song was recommended as one showcasing her vocals 😍 i ❤ wiping off the dust and hearing these amazing (sometimes forgotten) about songs
@@EmpressReacts I’m loving that you’re playing the forgotten ones! I’m definitely subscribing to your channel! Can you please play Madonna’s “Burning Up”? You will love it and I would really appreciate it ❤️✌️
@@jhoang861 i'll add it to the list🥰
You should react on less known Madonna's songs Oh father, Shoobee Doo, Till death do as part, The Look of Love
🤩 thanks for the recommendation!
Love Modonna's early hits! I was there! LOL
😄 so cool yo know, so this song charted?
@@EmpressReacts I dont remember but I had the whole album and listened to it quite frequently. I think it was from the "Like a Virgin" album?
This is so lovely! It can be challenging to keep going with our own creative pursuits, but this is definitely an inspiration for my music.
Makes me 😑but still love it
Check out the original by Rose Royce ....it's da bomb! ❤️
i've heard it b4, that's why i was shocked Madonna did a cover - that's actually good.😂
Your reaction was great! Please react to You Must Love Me live at the Oscars.
🥰 thanks! I'll add it to the list
I love your reactions! Love your insight and your thoughts on Madonna. I look forward to more!
🥰 thanx! I hope you sub'd 😁
@@EmpressReacts I sure did!
@@mjguz 🤗🤗🤗 thanks
GURL. If you ever make your way to Sarasota ... LET ME KNOW.
😄bet❤
more madonna :o ♥
😍
Hey Empress thats a great rendition from Madge, thanks again for the great reaction! Love her early stuff. If you like this you should check out Kate Ceberano, she did a cover (best ever imho) of this with her 80s band I'm Talking (great group btw). She is female vocal royalty here. One of the finest vocalists to come out of Australia. :D

I think the "Something to Remember' version from the 90s is the same vocal track, but they just remixed the production. Both are great in their own ways. Why redo the vocals when they are among her best ever recorded?
wow, interesting, they're good, but i would love to see how she would have vocally interpreted the song 10+ yrs later
Empress, you should do a review of Deborah Cox, "Nobody's Supposed to be Here".
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll add it to the list 🤩
Woo hoo 🔥 hot..voice!
Just a vacancy or Just so they can see?
Just a vacancy
EMP, I love your style, but Diana was a fabulous singer. This is also seriously great studio vocal by Madonna, but she is not nearly as good live. But she still puts on a great show. She is an average professional singer, but Diana is very gifted.
oh i ❤ miss ross! check out my reaction: ruclips.net/video/WcfZO5eVJ6I/видео.html
@@EmpressReacts EMP, my favorite DR songs: "Touch Me in the Morning" "Upside Down" "I'm Coming Out" "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" "Missing You" "Endless Love" (with Lionel Richie) "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"
@@Hollingsworth2781 i have to listen to some of them
@@EmpressReacts You and I like the same types of music as far as pop goes. You have a great ear for melody. You really understand the feel and theme of what what artist was going. These people created magic and you always seem to pick up on the magic right away. You have a good singing voice yourself. You have great feel for it.
@@Hollingsworth2781 thank u!! And its not hard to pick up on Magic when its good
Same vocal. Skip the remix. Listen to Crazy For You and Rescue Me!
Noted!✅
How can you give a reaction, when you are not listening to the song, STOP PAUSING PEOPLE.
Meh, this is one of her weaker ballads. The original by Rose Royce is still the best. This is one of the few moments where Madonna does a cover song and her version do not equal or rival the original.
