Christian and. Vera, you are one of the best entertaining and technically adept people I’ve enjoyed watching in years!
I love the humour about Toyota and Aussies - I’m one of them. Although I now drive a 1991 T3 Syncro - very rare in Australia. It has driveline vibration issues too!
Even though you made this episode to explain some mechanical basics to the desktop mechanics, you still managed to give me a laugh.

    Hi Christian and Vera,
Just wanted to drop you a comment your channel.
It is a well balanced of knowledge and humour.
I have been an engineer for about 35 years.
I specialise in large bore Diesel engines. So I know a thing or two about diesel engines.
Some of these armchair mechanics don’t have a clue.
I don’t even bother replying to those idiots.
I think your approach to engineering is first class.
I enjoy watching your videos, and enjoy the banter between you and Vera.

Well, this desktop mechanic has successfully restored NLA fuel lines on my 1992 XJS V12 by cutting off the crimped on ferrules and taking the end fittings to a hydraulic hose shop and had new hoses fitted. This can also be done with high pressure AC lines as repair kits with the appropriate dies are available. No welding or lathe work required.

In the UK so many levels of trades claim to be 'Engineers': in the media one frequently hears something along the lines of "Gas board engineers are attending the incident" etc etc. I recall a survey of the public's attitude towards engineering some decades ago: when asked to name a famous engineer did they choose Brunel, Telford or Issigonis? No they chose a gas fitter in a TV soap! (For clarification, I have nothing against Gas fitters or the gas industry.) But in Germany, you are right to reserve this title for those who are appropriately qualified, and that you do not claim engineer status is admirable and, to UK eyes, extreme. Nevertheless, Christian, I hope that your experience and knowledge is suitably recognised as you are clearly a true professional in your trade.

I served my time as a toolmaker in the UK at 24 I left engineering as there is just no respect for engineers in the UK and as a youngest you feel let down that none skilled people get more respect.
30 years later and people are constantly surprised that I can turn my hand to anything.
This is because I was taught by time served engineers to think as well as make.

Never in the field of engineering has so much precision been required by so many in the correct filling out of the Eur-Ing application form by mere CEng applicants. Only a hunch, but I think I know which country will have had the most representation on the related Working Group. And they wouldn't have been the Citroen or Alfa drivers. Washing machine repairers or domestic boiler technicians would likely not have been there either.

Losing torque through extensions when using an impact gun is 100% correct. There is a cheap tool that can do this though - the Shentai 12v battery impact gun. This tool saved me on a couple of occasions - one was removing exhaust flange nuts needing 2 extensions, the other was removing the 35mm rear diff pinion nut on my 1998 Jackaroo. No extensions required for the pinion nut though. The tool was also fantastic for re-tightening the pinion nut - I gave it one "clack" past the original position to add a tiny bit to the crush washer.

    Brilliant explanation regarding torque.
I often compare it to lorry tyre pressures, comparing them when the lorry is unloaded, compared to loaded with a 29 tonne load.
The tyre has a pressure of 7 Bar. It is easy to imagine that the pressure increases when the lorry is loaded.
It doesn’t. The Tyre might look like it slightly deflates. It will distend where it comes into contact with the road. But the pressure remains the same. It does not increase with load, or decrease as the load is reduced.
Exactly the same principle applies to using extension bars with a torque wrench.
Even though the bar may have to be turned further as the bar twists.

    • @Rickwardful
      @Rickwardful 7 месяцев назад +1

I don’t think those of us who mentioned using an Agricultural repair shop to change the Euro 3 fitting to a Euro 4 fitting, were tying to annoy you.
What they were doing was suggesting that they would have in effect made some sort of similar invention that you did, because they have the tools to do so, whereas we don’t.
Your solution was a very clever fix.
Our agricultural engineers might have removed the existing feral and replaced it from 50mm further down the flexible rubber hose with a new crimped on feral attached to a fitting that starts the conversion to get to the Euro for fitting, using screwed on fittings rather than having to weld any parts together. Possibly using additional flexible hose, instead of the metal pipe, tie-wrapped into the correct place.
Nonetheless I stress again your solution was excellent and of course much, much cheaper. However, you needed your tools, such as the lathe and taps and dyes and a piece of Aluminium to do it. Most of us don’t have that luxury.
Thanks as always for your amazing videos.
      ………….BTW, I have been 41 for 23 years now!

    • @markdavis2475
      @markdavis2475 7 месяцев назад +2

I think according to Boyles Law, the pressure in the tyre will increase slightly due to the volume of the tyre being reduced. But, according to everything I've just read, the pressure increase is very small.

    • @Rickwardful
      @Rickwardful 7 месяцев назад

      @@markdavis2475 Thanks for that.
Ironically also with a name like Boyle (suggesting temperature), one could suggest that the tyre will heat up more under load, which begs the question that as the air within the tyres heats up, it would expand, therefore might this increase the pressure?
      Probably again, insignificant.

    • @markdavis2475

What an excellent channel update. It's true, for me anyways, that the honesty in your videos and the fact that you do everything yourselves is part of the magic. Having built our own house just before getting into land rovers I find myself in the same position because I have been breathing life back into my previous D2, my now D3 and my wife's RRS. However, this year we need to concentrate on the house again and refresh everything and do the garden so I am looking forward to seeing you both do this too. Your viewers will stay loyal as we are all just doing the LR life together. On the Toyota front, I have a trip coming up soon to France and Germany and I confess that yesterday I did look at what other trucks were available and actually considered changing 😮 but there was nothing to compare to my D3. I have done all I can to it but if it were to die (and they do whether they are new or old) then I'll fix it again. I would rather do that than buy anything else. I must be nuts but your channel and the help from the UK forums and FB pages and the LR family keeps me going and it's good to know we are all nuts🤣 onwards and upwards 👍🏻

Although hearing Christian has no interest in older LRs was a blow. My fantasy of leaving my Series 1 on your road and miraculously finding the slipped cylinder liner repaired and recorded on UTube is now destroyed 😢😂

I'm so glad you did a video on torque wrenches with extensions and crows foot. The number of times I get the same comments while I am at work fixing Valtras and Fendts in the UK for a main Agricultural dealer as an engineer. "Oh, you are losing all of your torque, and its not accurate." Next time, I am going to sit the whole workshop down and force them to watch your video and make them subscribe! 😅 P.S - I've been going through and watching lots of your videos and I never actually noticed the flickering of the camera until you pointed it out because I am always so invested and interested in what you are both doing. Keep up the great work you two and ignore those keyboard experts as I call them!

I have the same setup, garage for some work and concrete slab I can fit the car (host one day). I had to send my LR4 off to get the 2.7 replacement but have serviced my LR2 for 8 years now 2 LR4's with 240k on the clocks. Amazing torque demonstration!
100% true about impact wrenches losing torque for every extension used; to remove gearboxes we use a single long (600mm) extension with a wobbly to maximise ugga dugga torque on bell housing bolts. Also gives you more purchase with a breaker bar when needed

    "German precision exactly" 😂
    brilliant video as always guys.
I also torque up where required with a straight extention not at an angle 😜
On the explanation around the hydraulic line repair, i also confirm that "your local tractor or hydraulic line mangacturer" cant generally repair this as they wont have all these "non generic" fittings avaliable to them.
On my WJ Grand cherokee V8 - i had a burst power steering line to which the only way I was able to get a repair was go to a specialist manufacturer of custom hydraulic lines and who did exactly what Christian said. We had a good discussion about the work, length, guage of line etc. They chopped off the ends and re-crimped/welded etc the ends with a brand new higher rated line in between (that needed some specific routing from me).
Took me ages to find someone to do it in the UK but i got their in the end.
Why did I get a repair instead of brand new, because all the small amount of used ones on ebay looked awful and would have come out of 100k mile cars and Chrysler/Jeep had discontinued the part.
I dont care about the flickering when you are indoors from time to time, outdoors the quality is pretty good anyway.
I (and like many others) watch the videos on your channel for the technicals & entertainment. I regulary look forward to your videos so I can learn something new. Thank you very mucn for all your hard work in making these videos.
If you guys need to take some time out from the cars and need to refresh your property a little then im sure many if us will look forward to updates on that too 👍

Great demonstration of torque transmission, especially the effects of angled delivery the radius change and spring. I'm not sure of the Gerrman hierarchical system for screening and registration of engineering technicians, technician-engineers (aka incorporated engineers) and engineers, but Christian should certainly investigate EUR-ING registraton as a mature candidate by the second route proscribed by FEANI.

Hilarious, loved the extension XXL! Physics is difficult for some… force = counterforce. No matter the elasticity of the transferring device. Excellent explanation, especially the addition of the amount of ‘work’ that does increase with elastic transfers and the angled u-joint.
Compensation for the crow foot can be easily calculated of course, it’s just a matter of ratio between the original length of the arm, and the shortened/lengthened arm when using the crow foot. Given the length of the arm, the offset under an angle can probably be neglected.
