John Deere Skidder VS Gigantic Maple Tree & Broken Chain Fail -- Winter Logging At Its Finest

  • Just another day in the life of a logger cutting hardwood during the winter in the Northeast. Watch as I cut a huge Ash tree right on the edge of a steep drop off. I put a 3/8" grade 100 choker chain around the tree and hook it to my skidders cable in an attempt to keep the tree from going all the way over the drop off where I won't be able to reach it. Big mistake....

    Nice pull, I make similiar content with tree felling and skidding. Im in an old tree farmer doing mitigation work at my place.

    Being from maine liked your golden road video i am a john deere fan except for the skidders the fuel pump in a very shitty location so I grew up to Timber Jack lol

      I like the stability of a Timberjack., but you just can’t beat the John Deere powershift 8 speed transmission. Also im not used to the lever steer on some TJ skidders.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. The skidder might be old, but she gets the job done. The best part is that I don’t owe anything on it and It owes me nothing.

    Sweet 640D. Runs and winches really well. And a nice short drag too! What is that, 2 miles!?

    • @TimberKing
      @TimberKing  Год назад

      Thanks. I was about a mile back in there where I cut that hitch. I have been about 1-1/4 miles back on this job. Its hard to make it pay if you have to skid further than 3/4 of a mile.

    Guess the winch wasn’t in free spool?

      No it wasn’t in free spool. Probably should have been though. I think it would have saved the cable from breaking.

    What is the preference for chain chokers rather than cable chokers?

    • @TimberKing
      @TimberKing  Год назад +1

      I like Choker Chains better than cable chokers because I am able to hook up by starting at the last slide (7th on my skidder) and working my way back. That way I am always pulling the cable from the end. Cable chokers always get bound up in your hitch unless you start from 1st cable and work your way forward. But really it just comes down to what you are used to.

      @@TimberKing Thanks for the reply, I thought maybe I was missing something when I tried chain chokers before going back to cable chokers which I just found easier to work with. YMMV and that is just fine by me.
