  • I put in some waterbars to stop the water from running down the skid road. Then use Old Smokey to move red pine logs on the landing. Progress grinds to a halt when Old Smokey blows a hydraulic hose. Removing the hose turns into quite a project.

We got a good old 640 cable skidder also. The DOT stopped me a couple winters ago. After inspecting the truck over the trooper tagged it "Out of Service", you have to fix it there or tow it. The only thing wrong was the low air pressure warning lite was out. After chasing for parts and tearing the dash apart, 3 hours went by and it was 7 PM with the mill closed. Yup thanks a lot, it was fun.

The DOT took the fun out of trucking for me. They always stop log trucks because there is no way for us to tall exactly how heavy we are when we load up on the landing. And the more we get on the truck the more we get paid so we are always walking a fine line there and they know it. So us loggers are an easy mark for the DOT. The low air pressure light comes on in my truck around 60 PSI and my parking (spring) brakes are already coming on by then. So that light isn’t telling me anything I don’t already know.

Im in Northern Vermont right up by the Canadian border. Funny you should mention Maine. I was just up in Milanocket last week. Drove all 96 miles of the golden road. Nice country up there.

After paying stumpage, fuel, and maintenance on the equipment are you making any money ?

Not really. And it seems like it has always been that way. I will get ahead for a while but it either goes to raining for a month or a major breakdown happens. Any money I have saved from this winter will probably be spent by the time I start doing cut-split firewood.
