If they did, they must just stick to the pixel and sprite art that they do so well, rather than the cheap looking 2.5D style that they decided on for Contra Operation Galuga.
@@Estorium 100% agree. I know gameplay is the most important thing, but between the ugly visuals and the stupid name (Operation Galuga), I almost instantly checked out of the new Contra.
This game looks like an old Java game with an HD update. The comic book is the origin for g.i. joe, they used guns and people got shot and died, looks pretty stupid when punching a hisstank until it blows up. It's too late for them to do anything with this besides tweaking difficulty and animation fixes. A g.i. joe game with a contra/ metal slug style is all we need
@@demgutts Facts. I’m RP’ing G.I. Joe in Ghost Recon Breakpoint (which is basically G.I. Joe IMHO). A game closer to that with the sci-fi and gritty military elements like the Hamaverse comics is what the franchise needs. Too bad they don’t take it seriously enough to spend the money to make a AAA game. All Hasbro would have to do is send 42 Brinks trucks to Hideo Kojima’s compound to hire him on the spot.
it look like its shaping up at least pretty well yeah it just needs more time in the oven...but all I can think of is...when are they gonna make a Transformers retro beat em up? They made an awesome hack and slash by Platinum games, I think they'd work very well as a retro beat em up...
Great review. Sadly, this is one of the worst looking licensed beatemups i've seen in a long time from a gameplay standpoint. Aesthetically it looks nice, but the gameplay looks as basic as Mighty Final Fight on the NES and having a simple jab infinite that barely requires timing just shows it hasnt been thoroughly tested. Those bosses look boring too. This gets outclassed by the majority of snes and genesis beatemups, so i really dont see this being worth even $10 USD unless they drastically adjust the gameplay. Hopefully other devs out there arent just watching the success of Shredder's Revenge and thinking they can just toss a nostalgic IP on to any old game engine.
There aren't any good G.I. Joe games in the crazy twisted universe inside MSGT's head. But hey, since what MSGT says goes, then I guess we'll have to abide by his laws. Quick, everyone! Destroy every single arcade cabinet of the 1992 G.I. Joe game! According to MapleSyrupGamingandTech, that doesn't exist!
I think it'll be fine for the big fans, I dig TMNT and those beatemups, even though some hate them. Streets of Rage 4 is awesome, but after 1 play through I've never really played it again.
They could add the Final Fight type of combo where, if you hold down, you finish throwing the enemy backwards. Mechanics are too simple. Also, run and jump kick should/could show other attacks. The demo currently has 3 selectable characters. The more recent is a Ninja with a sword.
I absolutely love beat-em-ups, and I grew up with all of the classics. However I think as much as the genre can offer some of the most fun experiences in gaming, beat-em-ups where the combat isn’t fun or challenging are some of the worst kinds of games to slog through. I really hope they put some variety into the controls, attacks, enemies and AI - all the cornerstones that make a solid beat-em-up.
I've been looking forward to this and hoped for better. I loved the original nes games and beat em ups. So this looked like a perfect combo. But unless they fix the issues, it will just be subpar. As a fan, I plan to get it regardless. But it sounds likely to disappoint.
I hope they make this game as good as TMNT SR was. You're right, the GIJ video game legacy comes nowhere near what it deserves compared to the effort put into the franchise by the artists over the years. I'm a very casual gamer, the customer profile I fit is the consumer that makes games generate revenue higher than projected. I'm eagerly awaiting the Switch release of this game and it better not be Switch 2.0 if those carts don't retro fit the OG Switch.
"Bland and repetitive," the video said. It would be neat if the developers made the background interactive where a player can "tag" in another Joe who performs a special move. It needs something because it's not going to make anybody happy except for the minute before the nostalgia wears off. The pixel art is good. Make the background come a live, it would be new and different and possibly save this game.
I've been on the fence about this since the first trailer. The Flash (animation, not the Joe) looking intro looks like something that'd appear on an Adult Swim sketch, and the butt-rock soundtrack doesn't reflect the show. A more brass-heavy orchestra would fit. Any word on voice acting? Maybe using clips from the show, or involve some of the surviving actors. The loge even looks bad.
Way too much criticism and to be honest I don’t see how they can fix it. Either they need to push this back or work like crazy to fix it. It feels like with nostalgia goggles is an average game at best.
The two NES games are fantastic. This isn't. edit: actually after playing the demo. It's not terrible. I actually quite enjoyed it as a somewhat mediocre but pleasant timekiller. But yeah it's got issues. and Duke feels so slippery. :O Also yeah, his run animation is goofy. :O but anyways, it's got potential. They can work on it and make it a lot better. And I hope they do.
I like this review, but when it comes to the part where you say once you learn what the boss is gonna do... I mean that's like every classic game ever. You learn the pattern of the boss, and adapt to it.
Yeah that is not really it. It isn't about learning a pattern you literally have to go out of your way for the boss to be able to hit you. It's boring rather then rewarding for learning the pattern
Theres so much to criticize that you cant really do it with 1 paragraph. Aside from the horrendous jumping animations and simple combos, the use of guns needs to be implemented better. They need to have more than just 5 bullets each. Thats just dumb. The Hiss Tank fight they need to find a way to make it so you have a gun for that fight because just punching it to death is really stupid. I noticed the screen clearing missile attacks you have the animation is very poor and underwhelming. Make those attacks bigger and more grandiose. You also need the bosses to talk and have quotes like they do in Shredder's Revenge. Them just laughing isnt enough. The smaller sprites are the least of this games problems because while most beat em ups have larger sprites, Captain America and The Avengers had smaller sprites and the game was good. I could go on but I'll stop now.
This game looked terrible from the start. Clearly trying to ride on the coattails of Shredder’s Revenge with no passion or care behind it. They really gotta stop trying to make GI Joe a thing besides action figures dudes in their mid-40s collect. No shame in the figure game as I’m a 36 year old NECA TMNT guy, but I just never understood the appeal of Joe.
With all due respect, this modest approach does not look too engaging. I will still give it a try, but the animation and pint sized pixelated characters don’t fit the aesthetic. Final Fight style graphics which accomplished in 1991, can surely be done again with 2025 technology
Honestly I can't believe they released the demo in the state it was. As someone who grew up in the arcade beat em up era, this feels like a bad port of an arcade game to the SNES . . .
@@Chaz4543 it really does, not to dogpile the developer but it feels like getting the G.I. Joe license isnt expensive going by the last few games made smh.
Im tired of beatemups with overly simplistic combat. Seems like a lot of these newer devs dont know what actually makes a beatemup so good ad rewarding to play.
Both those games have problems but I have no faith they will be fixed upon release. The jumping and throwing in Toxic Crusaders is very weird and off and needs work.
Now we know, and knowing is half the battle. Seriously I don't expect a lot from this game, the only thing we haven't seen here is cut scenes, or all the levels. Not necessarily a Joe thing, more of a beatemups thing
