I’m trying to remember how to load a “save” from a different disk than the game disk.

You mean a saved game state? If yes, for which game?
Basically, what I can tell you is that the C64 uses drive numbers and it would be interesting to have both floppies connected and disks inserted to see which data is on which drive number.
