Why IBM Chose Micrsoft‘s DOS Instead of CP/M as OS

In 1980, IBM was about to build a personal computer and needed an operating system. In my previous Videos, we saw that the negoatiotations between Digital Research and IBM failed and that IBM had chosen Micrsoft to be the software developer for their OS. But why didn‘t they decide to go with CP/M which was THE popular system at the time? How did the negotations fail? A lot of people asked quest...

I will do this in a virtual machine for demonstration purposes. Of course, it is possible to do the same stuff on a physical machine. Introduction to DOS | History of MS-DOS | Using FreeDOS Today
I’m trying to remember how to load a “save” from a different disk than the game disk.
You mean a saved game state? If yes, for which game? Basically, what I can tell you is that the C64 uses drive numbers and it would be interesting to have both floppies connected and disks inserted to see which data is on which drive number.
Thanks. I totally forgot how to load files
how to delete only the system parition not all the partions ?
Good question! Sorry for the delay. You can use gdisk or fdisk or a graphical tool to make that move. It's a good idea for a new video. Regarding your question - here's a tutorial: Deleting the system partition in Linux is not a recommended or safe operation, as it will render your system unusable. The system partition, usually mounted at /, contains essential system files, libraries, and configurations that are necessary for your Linux distribution to function. If you're looking to reinstall your Linux distribution or start from scratch, I'd recommend a different approach: Backup your important data: Make sure to save any important files, documents, or configurations you want to keep. Use a live USB/CD: Create a live USB or CD of your Linux distribution (or another one, if you prefer). Reinstall from the live environment: Boot from the live USB/CD and follow the installation process to reinstall your Linux distribution. This will erase all data on the system partition and install a fresh copy of the operating system. If you still want to delete the system partition, you can use the fdisk or gdisk command to delete the partition. Please be extremely cautious, as this will delete all data on the partition and make your system unbootable. Here's an example using fdisk: sudo fdisk /dev/sda Replace /dev/sda with the device name of your system partition (e.g., /dev/nvme0n1p1). Once in the fdisk interactive shell, you can delete the partition using the d command: Command (m for help): d Partition number (1-4): 1 Replace 1 with the number of the system partition you want to delete. Again, I must stress that deleting the system partition is not recommended and can lead to data loss and system instability.
In fact IBM offered 3 OS´s for the clients to choose. Problem was that IBM put a price above 200 USD por CP/M and 50USD for MSDos .. the other OS I do not even remember the name and price. IBM played a dirty trick on DR ... As the original MS-DOS (that came for TP and had a name as QD-DOS) was a copy of CP/M and DR warned IBM they went to DR and made what looked to be a fair deal.. Let´s the user choose the OS when buying the PC ... What IBM after launching the PC made the trick on the price. DR and Gary Kildal felt betraied. Pls see this video ruclips.net/video/VREZ6Zx_usc/видео.html
Wow, thank you. I never heard of that. I never saw an IBM PC with CP/M in our stores here in Europe.
@@StingyIT exactly ... That was the dirty trick they played with Gary Kildall and Digital Reseach ... It was not a nice thing they did...
I appreciate this video but the latest version of FreeDOS doesn't have the files in the same locations, nor the same folder names. It's not difficult to figure out, but it's frustrating. Instead of the C:\FDOS, it's now defaulting to C:\FREEDOS. The MTCP install is also now installed in the "NET" parent directory just off root, and the sample.cfg is found in the c: et\mtcp\samples , not the c:\...\doc\mtcp .
Thank you for letting me know. Yes, a lot has changed in the recent version of FreeDOS.
Hi @@StingyIT... Appreciate very much your careful walk through step by step. I too am working with the updated FreeDOS described by @JonPrevost. I was able to get as far as 17:50/30:05 in the video with same error you get there. You cleared it, by a simple reboot from harddrive. However, after reboot, I'm stuck with the same error, however slightly differently worded: Init: could not setup packet driver Could not initialize TCP/IP stack
@@markkleiman6531 I had a similar issue, and although there is a documentation for mTCP, I find it hard to follow it, gather and apply the information I need to solve the problem. I hope Jim Hall will make a video about how to set-up a FTP server or fix the wiki
FreeDOS critical vulnerability found: user can gain root privileges, steps to reproduce: reboot your PC :D
What is the little silver switch on the drive? I had a C64 and our floppy drive didnt have it.

Why would you destroy your computer. This is loony tunes
Yes, it is.
Can you post the FreeDOS virtual machine so we can avoid all the faffing around?
I thought about this for some time and it made me really wondering about your project. For me, the "faffing around" was the whole point of the project and the video. I didn't really see a benefit beside that. Is there a real need for a DOS-VM with a web browser? What would you like to do with it? I'm really interested in your answer. It would be great to hear what you are about to do. Anyways, I currently don't have the original VM from the video ready, but I'll be considering posting new VM's as soon as I start the next project.
With out your video I would have never got Free Dos going. Did not need to do the loop thing, running mint 21, FreeDos 1.3 and Virtual Box 6.1 .
If i install FreeDOS AFTER installing Linux, will it mess up the bootloader?
I never tried it this way tbh, but FreeDOS will definitely overwrite your current boot loader. Not sure if FreeDOS comes with a boot loader which supports dual booting. So I'm not recommending to do so. I guess that you'll have to invest some work to create/repair a boot loader manually after the installation. Why not use a VM?
@@StingyIT Ty for the answer... Yes, i'm going to use a VM, but i was curious to see what this could do to my whole machine. But i'll share a folder with my VM and see the fun things i can do with FreeDOS! Once again, ty for the answer and taking your time... :)
how do i download it?
I've used VICE - an emulator for the Commodore C64 - in my video. If you want to use BASIC in DOS, I recommend watching my FreeDOS videos.
DOS great design..-:0
Why did IBM , a big company, go with a 2 person startup Microsoft. IBM didn't want to develop their own OS but they needed the quickly? I think BIll Gates has some special "influence" with IBM because through BIll Gates parents or relative.. ;-0) SCP company was the looser but TIm Paterson is a winner, though. LOL Thanks for the history. Great video.

Bill gates already made basic which made it into pretty much everyone else's computer by this point, so it wasn't out of the question they could provide one.

Thank You for all the info, but I strongly disagree with Your views on multibooting installing on physical PC. Virtual Machine (or virtual Box etc) id a very good way of testing different Operating Systems, but for practical everyday's use the OS under Virtual Machine is deprived of too much resources (RAM, CPU...) and by having a multiboot machine and knowing what You're doing almost everything You have second thoughts about in not a real issue
Thank you for letting me know. I always like getting feedback. I would definitely agree with you, that with very low resources and comparable high requirements on both ends it is fine to prefer dual-booting over running a virtual machine. I've used a dual-boot setup for a few years in the early 2000s when I was using SUSE Linux 8.0 and Windows XP at the same time. On the computer I had at those times, it wouldn't have been possible to run a virtual machine with Win XP on Linux or vice-versa. So, dual-booting indeed made sense with that setup. But when it comes to FreeDOS where you really do not have the need for many resources, I guess you always gonna have enough CPU power and memory left on your system assuming your PC is younger than 25 years. If you are working with, say a 386 or older, then dual-booting FreeDOS makes sense. But in this case, you won't be able to install Linux Mint together with it at all. So my point is that dual-booting in general can definitely make sense. But whenever you want to have Linux Mint and FreeDOS at the same time, it probably won't - a physical machine strong enough to handle a modern OS like Mint (or Windows 11 f.e.) will absolutely be able to handle a virtual machine with FreeDOS. Note: In those cases where the physical hardware is unable to run a x86-VM, an emulator can do the job. (f.e. on a Raspberry Pi or a computer without the abilities for virtualization). I'm open and happy about every reaction.
You really need to level your sound output! That intro just about blew me out of my chair. After that I could barely hear your narration. :(
I'm sorry to have caused you hearing problems. :P The intro in the next video will be less noisy by at least 8 decibel. That's a promise. Thank you for letting me know. I take this input serious.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Can you update FreeDOS over the internet?
Good question. I never thought about that, since ...it's DOS! ;-) Packages do not get updated very recently and the DOS computer really shouldn't be used for any security-sensitive applications nowadays.
