No one mentions Giorno sometimes being a sarcastic smartass. Like when he infects Illuso, and has that sarcastic tone. Or his cockiness when he sped away from Koichi (smug Giorno is best Giorno). Also people don't realize that for most of the part, people are dying left and right, including friends. Not really a time where you can just be happy go lucky, considering they can be attacked at any moment. Giorno is an awesome character.

True, Smug Giorno is Best Giorno haha.
Also yeah I agree on the last part, in Part 4, yes Josuke and his buddies have to be on guard but at the same time with Kira, Kira doesn't have his own sort of Murder Team while Diavolo has lots (and two of these decided to go against him).
Second, they're gangsters, one of em can just appear in your bedroom and slit your d**k off and/or interrogate/blackma*l you. Murder is one of their professions, and they too can do coordinated attacks against their targets, with those in mind, Giorno's gang don't really have the time for some good ole cool down especially when they have to deliver Trish to the Boss and get the arrow thing before Diavolo/Boss does.

If you actually pay close attention, you would see that Giorno DOES have a a jojo quirk, its literally in your face the first few episodes of Golden wind, his jojo quirk is that he reads people, and gets an accurate sense of who and what kind of person they truly are , his readings of people are far more accurate than any other jojo.
For example: He could tell that Koichi was a really a good person.
He could tell that Bruno shared his morals and was also a good person during their 3 minute battle (in anime time) with how Bruno treated the 13 year old drug user.
He could tell that Polpo was an evil piece of shit by not caring that his stand killed an innocent old man and thus secretly killed him.(i promise you , no other jojo would not come to that absolute conclusion and wanted polpo dead that fast unless they were sure)
When he was a child, he read the actions of the gang that was trying to kill the mafia guy who was hiding in the grass( it's a stretch I know)
And the GREATEST example of this is when he mercilessly beat the ever loving shit out of Chocolata , it was as if he over heard the narration of what Chocolata did to all the people he killed in his early years. Seriously right before the beatdown Giorno voice and tone sounded as if he actually KNEW about the terrible things that chocolata had done.
(If he didn't know or had an idea, what other logical reason could you give for the reason he beat the shit out of Chocolata THAT long and brutally, he read chocolata like a porno magazine, up and down , backwards and forwards.)
But yeah great video, just in case people think Giorno doesn't have a signature , jojo quirk.

One thing that kinda annoyed me about the anime adaptation of Giorno, is that in the manga, whenever he was upset (I think this mostly happened after the Jobro deaths) he would tremble. That was completely left out and it kinda pissed me off because I believe that's an important quirk to his character. The deaths really did affect him but it wasn't as noticeable in the anime. He's clearly scarred by his childhood and it's a trait that carried on from when he was a child left all alone, honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Giorno had huge abandonment issues after all that. It really portrayed that he was just a teenager that's in a situation way over his head and that he isn't as 'emotionless' as some haters say he is.
Speaking of which, Giorno is less 'emotionless' and more introverted and reserved in my opinion. Like, he isn't as emotional as Josuke or even Jonathan or Joseph, but he also definitely isn't the stone wall that let's say Jotaro is.
TL:DR I will fight for introverted/reserved main character rights

And about the "trembling" parts, yes, it's a shame that the anime does not show this side of Giorno, especially the one after they've won the battle against Diavolo.

It’s also through how he gradually becomes more and more on the center stage of the fighting that showcases his development. He starts off inactively killing Luka in self defense using his ability, goes from inactive to active when dealing with Bruno, defeats Polpo through intentional trickery though it’s through Koichi’s aid that he defeated Black Sabbath, being the aide while his teammates take center stage during the Mario/Sale/Illuso fights then gets his own individual fight without any aid against Melone, being the one who finishes off White Album after Mista did most of the work, being the main player while Mista being the support this time, and finally taking the center stage by being the one who defeats Diavolo with an ability that demonstrates his new authority rather than supporting aid.

What make him my favorite Jojo is his contradiction (funny since is said that Doppio is the walking contradiction) because yes he has a 'right dream', he wants to help people and make of Italy a better place but at the same time he's a tief, he kills without a second though, after the Bruno-Diavolo fight Bruno didn't want to the gang to go with him bc he knew some of them would die but Giorno knowing that still said to Bruno that he should ask for help. He is the one who begin all and for the sake of his dream, his own justice and what he belive right he is ready to make sacrifices, he keep moving forward without hesitation dragging the rest. And as you say, to make a character that is the fussion of Jonathan and Dio is at least incredible. Nice video and sorry for my bad english~

4:00 One of my favorite things about Giorno is that while he has the whole "muda" shtick like Dio, the way he talks is exactly like Jonathan. This kind of thing gets lost in translation but Jonathan has a really formal and very polite way of speaking (more friendly and less distant tho). And Giorno is the first character since Part 1 to speak in that gentlemanly way. I find this interesting (and kinda cute) since none of the other JoJo's follow in Jonathan's steps in this particular regard. I think Giorno even jokingly called himself a gentleman at one point? My memory is a bit hazy on this but it was some time early on in the story. He's the JoJo who's the closest to Jonathan (the first JoJo) despite having Dio's blood running through his veins and the irony of it all just makes me laugh.

I agree, except the part where you said he's the closest JoJo to Jonathan, I'd say all of them are extremely similar to Jonathan in varied but meaningful ways, but with Josuke probably being the closest as not only does he share Jonathan's most major positive traits, like overwhelming kindness, generally positive, polite and friendly disposition, and raging boner for justice, but also shares Jonathan's few flaws (in addition to some of Joseph's and some unique to himself), like how early on his politeness ends up making him somewhat submissive and easily exploited (just like Koichi, who is also tiny Jonathan), and also bears Jonathan's hidden explosive temperament, which Jonathan almost immediately converted into a force for justice rather than allowing it to be detrimental at all, whereas Josuke took quite some time to stop letting his temper blind him and start harnessing it for good instead.
I just think Josuke's more similar overall, and it makes sense to me since Part 4 is pretty much a revisit of Part 1's themes and character archetypes from a somewhat better written and more experienced perspective, allowing Araki to tell the story he originally wanted to to the best of his abilities - a process which he again repeated when writing Steel Ball Run

I feel like another aspect of Giorno's character that's really underappreciated is how perfectly he encapsulates the ability of JJBA to pull off batshit insane scenarios and plotlines and still have the audience buy into its story wholeheartedly. Because if you stop to think about it for even more than a second, it becomes apparent just how inherently *absurd* Giorno is as a character: he's the 15 year old _son of Dio_ who coldly dispatches ruthless mafiosi and vanquishes *the literal devil* in order to become the leader of Italy's _entire underground crime network._ Any other manga attempting to present such a ridiculous, unrealistic character to the audience would almost certainly be met with dismissive eye-rolling and sarcastic laughter -- and yet, we JoJo fans accept this character without a second thought, thanks to Araki's masterful attention to tone, overarching themes, and character writing. The fact that a series as big as JoJo can end its season with a final image as ridiculous as _a 15 year old taking over the entire Italian mafia_ and be met by the general public with applause and cheers rather than scoffs and laughter speaks volumes to Araki's ability to immerse his readers in the world he's created, and it's because of this very subtle aspect of Giorno's character that I've found that people whose favorite JoJo is Giorno tend to have the greatest overall appreciation for the series and its themes as a whole.
~And in case that sounds like me tooting my own horn, my favorite JoJo is Josuke so I'm not in that camp lmao~
Anyway, fantastic video as always, and I hope to see more content like this in the future. Keep up the good work, Oceaniz 👍

    • @ginshuhime
      @ginshuhime 3 года назад +7

Yes! Pretty much that. Araki presents this big ridiculous idea masking a wholeheartedly positive message to us, taking its themes really seriously, but never letting us forget that we're watching or reading fiction. We know that it isn't real, though he makes us feel that it is, and while he entertains us with goofiness or absurd plotlines or exciting moments, he's delivering lessons that help us grow as human beings. That in my opinion is top class writing, and its peak is precisely Golden Wind. Not because the other parts are bad or lacking, it's just that GW has so much power in it that it simply grows on you, while at the same time it can't help but being so conflicting for people that expect other stuff from the series.
Jojo is essentially an artwork that needs an open mind to be experienced, not because it's hard to understand or whatever other gatekeeping reason you can think of, it's simply because Araki is such a unique person, even within his own context of being a Japanese man in a Japanese society and appreciating art and culture that are very far away from what he sees every day, so his narrative, his themes, his characters, are pretty unique too.
I am indeed a fan of Giorno and GW, and I have to agree that people that manage to go past their initial impressions of the character and the part and let themselves be touched by the golden light, truly become one with what Araki is trying to tell us here, and thus embrace the artwork of this man in a more tolerant way.

I think another theme of GW is the importance of the present. Giorno has a goal in the future but he still focuses on the actions that need to be taken in the here and now. Diavolo, however, only focuses on the future that his actions grant him, that's when in the final battle he clings to the vision that Epitaph gave him (despite it having been proven wrong).
Edit: One character I left out (and that strengthens this "importance of the present" idea) is Abbacchio. He's still haunted by the memories of his cop partner dying bc of his actions and refuses to let go, adding to this is his stand: Moody Blues, it's main ability is to recreate events from the past which can be read as Abbacchio refusing to let go of the past. Most of the stands in Bruno's gang have abilities that affect the present physically (Sex Pistols, Purple Haze, Aerosmith, Sticky Fingers, Spice Girl and Gold Experience) with Moody Blues being the exception.
Changing to Diavolo, this theme can also be spotted in his stand(s). Epitaph gives him a vision of the near future and King Crimson skips time, if stands are a representation of the users soul then this paints a bleak picture for Diavolo. He's obsessed with the future, to the point of sometimes dismissing the present, and he clearly wants to have control over everything in his life and this cripples him; instead of ruling Italy in a mansion he moves from place to place, with lights turned off and wrapped in a blanket. Before his real appearance is revealed he appears to wear gloves as to not leave any finger prints.
Diavolo and his crippling paranoia and obsession with his future come in full force when Gold Experience becomes GER. Before the iconic scene involving Giorno's new power he mentions that he almost doged the attack and he's scared shitless, however he seems to calm down when Epitaph shows a vision of King Crimson punching Giorno through his chest.
In his infinite death scene is where Diavolo is fully exposed as a control freak. When the Boss of Passione gets attacked by a drug addict he panics and cries out that he shouldn't die at the hands of this junkie (little hint of his God complex not being broken yet). The infinite death of Diavolo gives us something that we've rarely seen: Diavolo afraid. His punishment for skipping to the future is staying in a prepetual present and being stripped of any kind of control over his life or anyone else's

Amazing input! I agree with everything except for a tiny bit about Diavolo.
I wouldn't say that the eternal loop of deaths is where we see a rare Diavolo; this has been the case for multiple stances during Parte 5, since all of his actions are born out of the fear of being found, betrayed or exposed. He *lives* with fear, it's only that when he's finally punished that all of his facade is not there anymore. Without a stand, without his soldiers, without his money, drugs and power, all we have left is what we always had: a man so scared, so terrified of everything and everybody, that he cannot even leave something we will remember him for.

The effect of Giorno in Part 5 can be heavily shown through Mista's development
In the 'battle' with Rolling Stones, we see Mista as overprotective of Bucciarati and way too afraid of Scolippi, and that ultimately led to Bucciarati's fate of dying soon in the future
After the fight Giorno and Mista had with Ghiaccio, Giorno, through letting his arm bleed out, made Mista more confident, and at that moment he put his team over himself and took a lot of bullets for them...
He shot himself for the greater good a lot of times, just by getting inspired by a 15-year-old
This means thats Giorno is Jesus and always sacrifices himself for the greater good...
    Well...

I thought he was a great character and I really don’t know how people could label him as boring or bland. To me he is very interesting. I feel like the facades you mentioned are exactly what he does and it makes perfect sense when you take into consideration his childhood. I also heard somewhere(can’t remember if it was from an interview with Araki or just a random person) that Giorno reflects people’s characters back to them, ex. when Koichi was on the phone with Jotaro in the beginning of part 5 he told Jotaro that Giorno had a certain air about him and he seemed like a kind person(or something close to that), and I’m not sure if anyone else noticed but Koichi is something of a kind person himself.

Giorno's victories against enemy stand users truly felt like they were earned, and not just won because he was the protagonist and had plot armor. Part 3 had that issue quite a bit. And yeah, there's a few fights where he kinda did an ass-pull, but it's never been to the degree of Part 3. All his victories were won through quickly learning the enemy's ability and being creative.

I really wouldn’t call Joseph a Gary Stu, since he does have character flaws that he needs to work around and encounters several roadblocks. Notably, his inflated ego towards the beginning of Battle Tendency, and the only reason he survived his first encounter with the pillar men is that he took advantage of Wham’s sense of honor to get a month of preparation. It could be argued that Joseph tends to rely on Deus ex Machina, but that alone doesn’t define a Gary Stu.

Josuke may be my overall favorite Jojo, but 4 and 5 are constantly battling for being my favorite part. (I haven't read the manga yet.)
It's funny because in some ways, I adore them for the same reasons, although they are polar opposites in tone and ambition. DiU is a down-to-earth collection of entertaining, heartwarming moments and a slowly growing mystery, while VA is a brutal emotional roller coaster with an almost mythical status to its narrative. But in both parts, the synergy and growth of the characters, alongside Araki's growing creativity in writing stand abilities and battles, allows the story to shine like never before.
I also have a soft spot for healer characters, especially when they've got a badass "tough love" streak to them. That might be part of my affection for Josuke and Giorno.
