    I hear alot of people say bad things about d2, but in my experience you can get a wicked edge on it and it holds fairly decent. I usually like to keep my knife sharp though so I'm always touching it up on a strope and I touch the edge up at least once a month. But for as much hate as it gets, I think it's really underrated.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 года назад +4

      D2 is a decent steel it's just that it wasn't made for production heat treatment so the d2 we see is not the potential it should be

    That's a nice looking sharpening stone and it's great that you have a good free hand sharpening skill. I wonder if you could design a device to place a knife on and set a desired angle, so that someone without a good skill can also sharpen with a sharpening stone like this.

    • @SouthernKnifeLife

      Not to steal anyone's thunder but they make sharpening guides, the little blue ones. Sharpening supplies have them and chef knives to go have them also. You can use them on any stone and a set comes with angle guides from like 10 or something all the way past 20. Hope this helps

    Good tips my man. I'm a novice Smith and currently absorbing as much as I can. I can make a pretty decent blade, holds an edge, cuts almost as good as what you showed here. I use s7 for punches, drifts and such, and have a few 6 foot sheets of 4140. What's a good grit recommendation for a slicey edge using the 4140? Thanks bro.

    I’ve got a Kizer sliver in s35vn, and the burr is difficult to remove, so my question is the heat treatment effect blade shapes in the same steel? Another words, is the sheepsfoot to a fine drop point shape heat treatment effect the hardness?

  • @schneir5
    @schneir5 2 года назад +1

    I don't have any S35VN steel, but I have two Spyderco's with black coated CPMS30V plain edge blades, and one Spyderco LC200N blade. I've used my Sharpmaker to hone the one black blade but just kept the Spydiechef with its factory edge, by only cutting paper and receipt paper with it.
    Is LC200N difficult to hone, and does it hold an edge well, considering that it's made by Spyderco. I thought that might have implications to the heat treatment. I really like their knives.

    Hmm I like 1000 on Kizer s35vn. On my Cold Steel I went 800. I put a dual grit edge on my bestech Swordfish 400/1200 so 400 on the clip side and 1200 on the show. I find a bit of variation in s35vn heat treatment, not as bad as m390 mind, but a bit. Which surprised me some, I would have expected it in 154cm but not s35vn. I don't expect it in D2 -as a cheap to manufacture air hardening Steel it's stupid easy to do. (I'm over chippy ass D2 though, so no more D2 knives).
    TL;DR: a lot of variation in s35vn check your "best" grit per knife.

    My FF/Drop Gent has a 1k grit 17 dps edge and rolls so easily, I’m not sure if the steel is just soft or if it’s too fine of an edge. It does strop back to razor sharp after a couple of passes

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 года назад +2

      If it's rolling easily then it's soft or poor heat treatment, that blade should have no issues with rolling at 17° with regular use, try adding a micro bevel, or you cab convex your edge, or raise the angle, any of the 3 will help

You can always tell when someone isn't a professional at anything. They're baffled at how they can know and do things that seem complicated or impossible to the uninitiated/untrained, but are second nature to a professional.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 года назад

      It means it doesn't have bite, it might be sharp, but no bite, you can touch it easily without the edge wanting to bite into your skin
