Also i would recommend use water on your target! Knives will stick better and it target will last much longer ,)
Adam Celadin hi u are the person who is inspiring me to throw knifes
Thanks for the link in the description! Nice design!! When it comes to replace the blocks, just so you know, the blocks will "broom" and become... bigger. So when I tried mixing old end grain with new end grain, they didn't fit together nicely...which led to gaps and that led to some of my blocks breaking in half rather than brooming. My friend said it might've helped for me to soak the old end grain blocks in water for a day to get them to fit better. Anyways, just to give you a heads up... gaps will not be your friend in an end grain target. Use shims if you have to. Have fun with knife throwing and awesome target!
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who throws knives in the shop :)
I'm making one of these! I have been throwing knives since I was a kid, 4-5 days ago.I have hung up cross cut pieces of log ends and used lots of things for targets. Almost got walter my shop cat by mistake once. Turns out Walter don't like knife throwin. He wouldn't come back in the shop for awhile (until he got hungry) I like your idea of being able to replace the little squares of wood so easy. God knows I have enough little peices of wood around my shop tp make a dozen of these right away. Thanks for sharing this idea.
Awesome target! It also might be beneficial to pre-cut and pre-drill a bit of replacement blocks while you have that drilling jig, so that you don't need to do extra work when it's time for replacement.
Agreed! Great idea....since you're already going through the effort might as well make more while all the wood, stop blocks, and jig is out. Throw it in a box or on a shelf for the future.
What a great example of design for maintainability. A little extra forethought and effort and you have a project you can enjoy for a long time with minimal upkeep.
YOU WERE JUST BRUTAL IN THE END WITH THAT FLAG !!! FREAKIN OUTSTANDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another thought, run threaded rods instead of dowels. That way you can unbolt one line at a time for replacement, and has the added benefit that you can compress the boards together for a tighter target.
Cross dowel hardware! I am rebuilding a bed frame wanted to use that hardware but did not know what they were called. I have notched an inch into the 4x4 legs to hold new 2x4 cross members. Amazing that you just happened to mention the exact equipment I needed. Now I can order them paint and finish. Awesome. I love your projects and videos April. Great ideas and executions.
I have been throwing knives since I was a teenager, I don't know why I never thought of this! Brilliant!
Thanks for the idea. Perfect past time for me. While waiting for the wood burner, after filling up, I throw knifes. Took me a couple weeks to get them to stick consistently. Something is satisfying about the thunk when they stick.
you gotta teach me knife throwing when your in cologne! cool project and a very funny ending!
Heck yeah! I won't be able to bring my knives though, we'll have to find some there.
April Wilkerson maybe we could make them ;)
And that's why we're friends. #greatidea
April Wilkerson 😘
I'm so happy this youtube friendship happened :D
I like the double-sided idea. and the way each block can be swapped out. I'm totally gonna steal your idea! Thanks
April, I'm from Chicago and I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed the way you ended this video. LOL
; ) hehehe it's all in good fun
Yes it is. Oh yeah they lost today too. Awwww
I like the thought that you put into your design to enable easy replacement of the pieces. I have some throwing knives but need to learn how to throw them. Good job!
Very nice work April! Right when I saw that knife fall I thought of attaching a half circle shelf to the bottom to catch any knives that fall, it would help keep them sharp and you don't need to bend and search for any get-away throws
I have used the cross dowels (I call them barrel nuts) in several projects and I love them for take down applications. Great video as always.
you remind me of my granddaughter. She 18 now and obsessed with weapons, especially knifes. She has her own set of throwing knifes and a target I built her a couple of years ago.
Love watching your construction techniques. They helped me to realize to just go with it and don't over design things. Make jigs for things that repetitive. You are scary good at tossing those blades.
Every video I watch of yours...
You just get cooler
Great job April. Gosh I could keep you busy all summer with projects on the farm lol
watches you throw knives, makes a note to never piss you off.
A woodworker with a great sense of humor, throws knives and they stick where they should, and very lovely.....definition of perfect, really. Your husband is a lucky man, young lady! Lucky man indeed!
this is perfect for a gift for my family everyone in my family throws knives or tomahawks to pass the time and i have lots of scrap wood to use
Firstly, what an amazing young lady,
Secondly, what a nice workshop,
and thirdly, what an impressive feat of engineering design.
Young women should be encouraged to watch this - it will show that engineering is not a 'man's thing', women are as good at engineering as anybody else.
I made one of those out of pine and cedar 2x4 studs. Did it like a endgrain cutting board a few weeks ago.
Very clever design April, well thought out.
Lovely big smiles at the start and a good comedy ending.
Thanks mate.
Excellent production! As a knife thrower, I was really impressed with your endgrain design!
You have been throwing for a long time. Good Project. Thanks
Cool project and love the dowel solution April! No worries with that banner - Falcons just eliminated the Packers! I may see you in Kennesaw in February!
Nice target. A slab cut off of the end of a larger log works great also. Used to throw knifes years ago but has bee a long time.
Very cool build! I've been subscribed to Xolette's channel for years...I love watching her try different challenges 👍
Hahah, now that's the way to lose a bet! Too funny.
I like how you made the design your own, definitely a longer lasting target that way, and you can also swap the middle kabobs for the top or bottom kabobs before more need to be made.
creative build April! simple yet very utilitarian
Hello I am a follower of the workshops offered on RUclips and admirers of the work Tkdmiha and I am from a country (Iraq / Baghdad) I hope that the rings be translated into Arabic so as to take advantage of the business on a large scale for the Arab world and thank you for the offer of a broad education Trade and I admire very much your
April your a joy to watch. makes me wanna get back out in the shop. thank you, keep it up
Very creative, April! I think it's time to move my dart board into my shop.
I'm from Saudi Arabia Ante like creative and beautiful I've watched videos of all thank you for your efforts and your innovations
You've definitely got some knife throwing skills. The board looks great as well. 😁
So, first I was amazed at the whole idea of you throwing knives. Then that grin when you pulled out the Packers flag. That was hilarious!
I love the things you're doing, respect from Denmark, Jens.
The ending of the video was hilarious.
Nice video. Such a good idea for saving time on a build later. Very glad I came across this.
I used chains but absolutely love the French cleat, great targets
Literally laughed out loud at the end! Great video, April!
; ) Hehehe....all in good fun.
I loved that little giggle !!
Great use of the Packer flag! We use them that way year round here in Minnesota.
Fantastic video! I have been planning to replace my current knife target with one of these for a long time. Also, brilliant idea using the dowels and threaded connectors! I wish I had done that with my current knife target now that it is so chewed up. Have a great day!
This is now one of my favorite videos of yours. You made me laugh out loud. And the target is pretty cool, too!
Awesome ending. Glad I got to the end.
That's OK April, I've been using cowboy t-shirts and flags for rags in my shop for years. And they are excellent rags!
if you used an odd number of rows you could add a threaded rod to add additional clamping force to the center or skip the dowels all together and use a threaded rod for alignment and clamping force for each row.
Your One Handed skill has increased.
Your One Handed skill has increased.
Love the ending! Vikings fan don't ya know. Ya sure you betcha.
Always fun to watch. Your editing is spot on April.
April - A truly formidable woodworker!
I know that I'm late to this party, but this is a cool project. Also, as a vikings fan, I absolutely approve of your uses for that flag.
Very cool.
You should probably make up a flatter version of the drilling jig that can be stored with the target, so it’s available for easy prep of replacement bits.
April I watched this video the other day and stopped short of the video. I just finished the out takes on this one. Now that's what you call thinking outside of the box me and the guys at work loved it GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just thought about something how about a cover for the target on a hinge maybe to catch the knives that fall to keep them off the concrete. Can double as a message/ note board on the outside. Hinged on the bottom with some 1x4 boards trimming the outside for a lip on the cover.
Yhanks very much for this video as it is very timely I promised my wife I would teach her how to through knives for self defence but have been waiting till I had a target that could take the abuse. this should do the trick. Thanks again.
In most states it's illegal to carry throwing knives so it isn't a good go to method for self defense in my opinion.
I love your humor. Thanks for sharing
I had a moment of PTSD from putting together Ikea furniture when I saw those cross dowels
Its all right, they can't hurt yo any more. Unless the wife say lets go to Ikea they you on your own pall. Stay strong!!
I was just about to start making my sauce when I got the notification, I figured it could wait another 6 minutes 39 seconds. Great job April, you really hit the mark on this one! 🎯 😉 ..... I hope you're doing well with the move.
Sauce? For whatever reason I figured you were in the US, are you making dinner?
April Wilkerson yep, going to have spaghetti, making homemade sauce, sausages and meatballs for dinner, I usually cook the sauce for four hours.
Fred McIntyre man you're making me hungry
Nice! was just making lasagna from scratch myself :) wife and I love your videos. subscribed when found your board on board fence....
Great idea, here's a suggestion, if the ends of the long side were planed slightly to give the centers a bow inwards when you tighten the bolts in would act like a clamp and hold the blocks in with friction, save having to drill the blocks. But your solution is perfect too, great use of the flag lol
What an ingenious idea. Well done!!!
Another great video with a unique build
Beautiful wood pieces served other purposes arrangement method. Thanks for the piece of information Regards
nice! and nice ending too. lol
now you have to make your own set of throwing knifes!
Fun project and great knife throwing skills!
Beautiful work! Love the idea of the modular blocks
As always, another interesting shop project.
April this is the best idea.... Thank you I'm on mod 4 for my axe target, hate to admit it I'm stealing this concept....
Nice throwing board. Looks fun
that's pretty clever April the way u inserted the dowels..i have used those metal cross dowels before they work great and come in handy that's funny where you hung in the Green Bay Packers banner😃 looks like ur mitersaw dc works great! ..
If you like knife throwing, consider trying throwing stars too. They aren't as technical but can also be fun.
Hi April. After watching this video I think RUclips suggested another channel, Xollete. She is a lady knife thrower. Not sure if you have seen her videos before. I'm going to start knife throwing now too!
OMG... best video ever. Thank you. Ms. April W.
Hi April, above Avg knife throwing skills, very cool project! Maybe I'll make myself one! Hysterical ending with the Packers banner! But I was rooting for the Pack! Sending love your way! Be well.
Dang, talented and a badass! Who knew? That was nice precise drilling, very impressive.
; ) Thanks but it really isn't credited to me. I made that jig so it takes all the guess work out of it.
April Wilkerson Still impressive. New tattoo?
Nope, I've had it for years.
that's a great idea! i glued mine and the glue doesn't hold for very long, especially after you keep pulling the knives from the wood, the glue weakens and eventually gives... so i love the idea of the removable side with the wooden dowels!
Sweet, good to hear. I was wondering if the work up front would be worth it.
April Wilkerson very much so!
A Dab of paint on a few to color the individual ends will give smaller targets to throw at.
Love the ending of the video! 😆
HAH! Great stuff! Your design ideas for the target were really smart, and the packers ended cracked me up!
Really love this video awesome DYI knife target, iv been looking for new ideas on targets. I've just been using cardboard to throw knives at, an the pieces of cardboard I get are about 5'1ft ike and about 3 to 4inc thick they are decent and I think great for beginners but I've proved a lot since I started throwing, so Im kind of sick of the mess and now im just tear right through them faster than before.
WOW...This is SO weird!! I've been drawing up the almost exact throwing knife target.
I've been playing with the size. Also, between threaded rods or just a thin back piece that looks like a bed of small nails. Two sides is definitely smarter.
Thanks so much for sharing! GREAT JOB!!!! : )
Cool Idea I love it. May have to do the same thing in my shop... Oh and the wood knife target is nice too!
Being a Bears fan.... You made my day...
Well played on honoring the bet! 👍
Great work, thanks for taking the time and sharing!!!
Great target, I went a bit more rustic and lazy with my target, an 8" thick 30" diameter slab off the end of a spruce log. Took about 10 minutes with a chain saw to make 2 of them, includeing filling the saw with gas and oil.
Yep that works well too.
I lust laughed so hard when I realized you were going to throw knives at the packers flag xD, Great video!
; ) hehehe all in good fun.
Go! Pack, Go!
@@AprilWilkerson as a Vikings fan, so nice seeing your accuracy on display :)
I love your Tools Rules... I'll get that sign for my shop too.
hello April. Im from Lebanon and I like so much ur channel
Love the dowel idea!
LOL, Too funny, April. I'm sure Nick is thrilled :)
👍 April Wilkerson I used to do that all the time until the door cratered. Have you done a video on how to make those throwing knives?
Nice project! I will have to build one for my shuriken.

Very cool. I like the hardware used. The flag deal was funny.
