- This video details the step by step process of how I built my new end grain knife throwing targets in order to prepare for competitive knife throwing. It outlines the steps I have taken to build the strongest and most secure target that I know of, and what it took to get it up to par with the IKTHOF (International Knife Throwers Hall Of Fame) target outline. You can find out more about the IKTHOF by going to their website at ikthof.com
This was quite a project - one that was very close to my heart - and throughout the entire process, I could feel how much this all was meant to be. I am anxious at the thought of competing and never in my life have I felt more connected to anything I have done or put my heart in to.
Although this video shows my targets being built from a competition standpoint, it's a great way to build any kind of knife throwing target as well. And it is also the same way I built my last target.
In this video you will see me throwing knives from the following amazing knife makers:

All my best and see you all again real soon!

Hey RUclipsrs! Stay tuned for my upcoming videos - The Bladed Broadcast Episode III and a knife review video that features a non-throwing knife! That's right - I said NON -THROWING! But don't worry, cause I am gonna throw it anyways. lol. See you all soon!! ~TBB
awesome job!! can't wait to see what you have in store for us next!! ;-)
Thank you! :))
Have you tried a palm sander with maybe 220 grit might save a lot of time and get same result.
What were the brands of those knifes again. Great job on the targets. It got you a littl OCD cleaning, spackle, painting. Lol Im the same way. Thank you.
You are so awesome. Totally love your new target wall. Well done and thanks for sharing. Just discovered knife throwing and now surfing YT to learn how to build a target.
Awesome video. My neighbors are gonna clutch the pearls when they see me build one of those.
You are one talented lady Kimberly, the new targets look great and I know you will be putting them to good use. I'm looking forward to your future videos.
Thank you very much. :)
Wow, I just ran across this video. I loved how your dog watched you work cleaning. Lol You are pretty neat and I like your entire gig. Nice style young lady.
Awesome video and 'Josie Wales' is the best cat name, ever!
Thank you, just starting out and I learned a bunch here. Those targets look bomb proof for sure.
Awesome 👍, haven't thrown in over 40 years, going through various home made targets. This information really is helpful, thank you !!!
Can you help me with mine,😮 only if you live in Ontario Canada
@@cuedustsorry I live in California, but log rounds are the best Z
Literally had to drop a like for "sorry for shaky video - too much coffee"
Thanks for the informative video!!
Ha good finish "reason why" put this in my knife YT folder. Got a set of knives and very little area to dedicate for a target area, maybe the dirt alley behind and the telephone pole to hang it on? Going through my ancient old boxes of stuff and found a throwing knife set maybe time to do that. Got a pic from my daughter with my 9 yr.? old granddaughter getting a bullseye with an axe. Might have started something. I'm 76 and lived in my own house surrounded with weapons, rifles, guns from my pioneering ancestry so I made my own weapons from my native reading and encyclopedia stuff like a slings and bolos ... instead of learning sports (a form of battle training) I made my own knives and practiced throwing weapons like the machetes on my walls. All surrounded by West L.A. blue ribbon schools. Good job on this vid five years later, once posted eternally accessed. My father would give me presents of knives as a kid. Need a cutoff saw or HD rental of one.
@4:07 some of my. best memories as a kid were doing this exactly while my dad worked in the shop .
I am going to follow your instructions your target look great.
Beautiful video Kimberly!! I am going to make my next one this way when we move out to AZ! Thanks for sharing!!
Robert Bentley Thanks so much, Rob! :))
Now I really want to start throwing knives again.
Cool. Just getting into throwing, I was curious what everyone was throwing at. Gotta build me one of those. Thanks!
Did you ever build one? How did it go?
@@YAOG i ended up using slices of tree stump imstead.
Love your video and the tops have give will help with mine. One more note you are a great thrower. Myself just starting no spin and it's getting better
glad i came across this, i will be doing something similar to this for a throwing axe target
you are one bad ass angel ! i dig the enthusiasm..keep doing what you love…stay happy..
Awesome revamp of your targets. Thank you so much for the upload and please keep your great content vids coming.
Thank you so much. I look forward to getting more RUclips videos posted very soon. Life's been crazy lately - but I will be back as soon as I can. Thank you for the motivation and kind words! :))
Hi Kimberly! I added this video as a video source for IKT (Instinctive Knife Throwers)! Awesome info!
Devin Debow Thank you! I appreciate the share! IKT always has my love! ❤️
I saw this and had to subscribe. I've thrown knives since I was a kid and have enjoyed the sport for years (nothing competitive or serious) but it is so much fun! I want to see you in Vegas next year! I think you have what it takes to compete!
Awesome! And thanks for the sub! I am looking forward to Vegas! :)
Awesome video.
Got a tip for the sliding blocks. Sprinkle some salt on the wood glue, it will keep them from sliding.
Holy moly that's the best set up I've ever seen
Nice job. Here’s a tip for cutting your pieces- set up a stop block on your miter saw so you don’t have to measure each time you cut.
As much as I hate to see it, the mountains burning look so beautiful.
Also, great vid. I'm gonna use this to make my own style targets. Keep it up
Impressive! That's solid
I really need one of those, the knives and targets would be sweet too
you did an amazing job on that, i should have used the 4x4 blocks, i used 2x4's and stacked 8 rows of 24.
but i really liked the way you built those, YOU GO GIRL!!
Love the design. I will have to try it out
I use more glue (with a slower set time) when gluing the blocks together, but no backboard because I throw at it from both sides. I set 2 posts in the ground with a cross piece and hung it from that with chains.
Awesome, Sist...good job
That looks like fun!
Very awesome video on making end grain targets. High quality work!! Now I need to make a couple
Good info thank you! I love sanding!
Nice job!
That video is pretty cool. Log sections are great but are hard to come by for many people and hard to mount. This takes a lot of work but seems like a great way to get the advantages of a log.
I just fell In love 😻
Awesome... You are amazing... I love the new board.
Aw, shucks. Thank you - I am glad you like it. :)
Those tall skinny trees are awesome
very cool set up. I will be building some of my own soon I hope. right after I get some new knives haha.
Thank you! And awesome! You will love it!
Nice workshop!
Sand before cutting, belt sander. Some pallets have nice wooden block spacers that work well to make targets cheaply.
A very enjoyable video! You’re very talented! Good luck in your future tournaments! Oh, and you’re also very pretty!🙂
Love your show ! I love the art as well !
Well done 👍🏼
I just found your channel. I'm learning no-spin but it's not easy. That target looks great! I used 2x8s but mine is already falling apart mostly from my tomahawks. I'll have to try the end-grain to see if that lasts longer. Thank you!
wow, very nice targets
Again great video, ending had me rof łøł
Thank you!
I think the screws were overkill but very solid. Glad to see the kids there with ya. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were from woodshop
Wow beautiful job! And excellent knife throwing! 👏👍💪 and yes always wear breathing protection especially when sanding pressure treated wood some of it has chemicals that include arsenic 🙏
TIP: Instead of sanding one block & edge at a time. Lay a group of blocks on their sides. Clamp them together and down in a flat surface. Use a belt sander and or random orbital sander (or even a hand power planer) and sand them all/group of them at the same time (as if it were a mini tabletop).
One of THE best methods to hold down and preven sliding/slipping around (and protect) your project while sanding is to use a yoga mat. Much better than using drawer/shelf liner (which some people use and isn’t bad)
Super Great Video
Ha nice work. Awsome ending.
Looks great!!!
Thank you so much!! :)
Thanks for thus awesone vid!
Excellent video! You rock girl. I’m just starting throwing after seeing it in AZ but I’m living in England so it’s not as easy here 🙈too many rules I’m definitely going to copy your design to add to my large log that I’m waiting to chainsaw into moveable size its4’dia and 6’long know I’m gonna cut 6”off it Thanks 🙏 for posting DB
Thank you very much! Very useful. Hope everything is going well for you. Cordially
greaatt... nice totorial kim...
Thank you so much!
Very well made, indeed.....
Thank you!
Awsome job 😊 🤪 .As a builder , It is always a pleasure to create a treasure. Thanks for the ideas .Awsome work enjoy your hours of fun 😊 . 🔪 🎯 🪓 🎯 🔪 .
So awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this 😁
How do they hold up with tomahawks? They look super solid, good job !
Love the ending!! 🤣😂
looks very good and professional!
as a little side note: I hope there won't be any hornet nests behind the wood wall in the future, would be very frustrating to get rid of them
Sir Taylor Thank you and thanks for the tip!
Thanks for this detailed video. My entire family loves to throw knives and axes both and we are needing to update and upgrade our targets this video should be very helpful as a referance. Thanks again. Oh you do throw axes at these targets too don't you?
I love to hear that your entire family throws! That's really amazing! I do throw axes at these targets - however, they eat them up quite a bit more than my knives. What I plan to do is build something where I can use log rounds for axes. I have actually thought about a target behind me (when throwing at this target) for that. I will have to see. Axes definitely do more damage! but it is possible! :)
Thanks for the reply. I figured...they always do more damage :) but log rounds, of the right wood, are often hard to find. Thanks again.
C.E. Jarvis I completely understand. I don't find them too often myself. Either way, I don't throw axes very often, but I think that will change one day. :)
Pretty good!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this!
Bravo!
Devin Debow Thanks, Devin!
I can't wait till I'm off paper and can have throwing knives and tomahawks again. I'll be rusty at first, but will come back quickly.
Thanks! Cool Video!
Her knife throwing skills are a bit better than mine, as in a LOT better!!!
GREAT VIDEO ! Can you recommend good throwing knives and where to buy them ? I bought some cheap ones but I see yours are heavier built
When you zoomed in on the bullseye, I noticed something white coming out of each end grain piece. Is that wood glue? Rain water? Paint? Or something else, just curious. Great build!
Great video ! Why did you spray the target with water before throwing ? Does that soften the wood ? Ron V
Is it possible to make it less deep / seems to be a lot of wood for what appears to needing a target only 3-4 inches deep.
Wow
How often do you practice and for how long I am thinking of getting in to competition throwing
You deserve SOO many more subscribers,im thinking about starting knife throwing .Any opinions ans tips?
I paint my end gran targets with motor oil . Work better than water and last much longer.
cool build but i did notice did you cover up the vent for your dryer?
Highlander Thank you! No, that was just an air vent. :)
Just subbed here and insta.. im working on my archery target and i might put something like this on top.. wish me luck.
I am going to have to build another target soon.......
Next time consider making your plywood backing long on each side. Use this to screw to the plywood backing.
Thanks for the video.
Miwax stain is interior color for wood. it will not seal and protect anything without using either polyurethane (for interior) or sparurethane ( for exterior use). It might bead up slightly as it is an oil and will be absorbed into the wood but you would be better off with an exterior deck stain or paint
COOL
Very nice set up. Do you practice left handed? It would be challenging good skill to have an give right arm a break. Lol
Nice job. Why not use both sides? Why are you scrapping one side when it can be used later on. I skimmed the video so if the answer is in there I'm sorry.
Very nice setup you have ,do you prefer light or heavier knifes or both for throwing?
Cool! I've always wanted to make a real target, instead of throwing at big pieces of wood I find in the forest. If I don't have clamps, is there any way you would suggest to make an end-grain target and still have it tight? Or would it be better to just buy clamps?
Do you have any ratchet straps? You could try using those or even just paracord if you can tighten the knots strong enough. I hope that helps you some! :)
Thanks! I think I'll try that for when I try to make an end-grain target. I have some straps similar to ratchet straps around the house.
Awesome!
Only thing missing is Grass 😂.. I can help, just saying. Great video thank you for the info.
Great, well done video!
(I hope that wasn't an important vent that was plugged off when you covered the wall with plywood:-)
Thank you!
Never breath the saw dust of treated lumber Kiddo!!! I know....happened a long time ago....
some people live the life i live in the suburbs but love the country life lucky peps.
Hahahaha that was Sooooooo Badassness......Thanks!!!!!!!
cosmicsponge2000 Thank you! :)
Nicely done; but given that you’re screwing each block there is no need for glue
👍
You know how many Blue Collar Men who would Love someone like her! But Great Video!
Great video! But may I ask why you decide to divide the target into cubes? Is it so the knives stick better in the target? Thanks
Just preference! Plus it looks pretty! lol. ;)
@@thebladedbroad9654 Ah ok, I've made a target of my own like yours! thanks for replying.
Awesome!
Pressure treated wood is toxic isn't it, just a concern when cutting and sanding inside, especially around kids. Cheers
It’s carcinogenic, it’s the main reason you need to wear a dust mask. Even handling it for long duration without gloves is a health problem. More so breathing it in... 🤦♂️
