- Loading a big heavy ADV bike in the back of a pickup can be a pain. Especially when doing it by yourself. Using a winch makes things easier and safer!

Anything to make loading easier is a good thing! Great vid!
Absolutely perfect. I'm 82 and starting to get goosy about riding my bike up into my truck. I want a shell for truck camping. So this will allow the bike to just fit under the Leer 122 high shell door. I've starting to design a dolly type lift on ramps but why bother when this works fine. I might consider the Harbor Freight tri fold ramp with thin plywood over the cross members for easier footing. So simple, inexpensive and easy to make and use.
Simple and it works 👍🏻
Awesome job man I knew this would work. I popped by shoulder out trying to use the clutch when I stalled it half way up in the truck. I had to let her go to the grass. Broke my heart to watch her fall over but at least is was grass, awesome video man.
Hell yes! I'm building an overland truck and trying to take a sportbike with me. This is a great solution for me. Thank you!
The low ground clearance on the sportbike can be an issue at the angle between the ramp and the tailgate unless you have a fairly long ramp. It might also need to be curved.
HF fan boy, hadn't even considered looking at an electric winch. Thanks!
Im about to do the same thing but was going to permanently mount the winch. Thanks for the demo
No drama. I like it!
This is a phenomenal idea. I literally was thinking of buying a trailer because loading bigger ADV bikes is such a pain. But also the fact that I dented the front of my truck bed riding the bike in and not being able to stop before hitting the truck bed.
Lol 👍 for honest input
@@mikesaler1038 Been there done that.
Wow I think I just found an easy way to load my Indian Challenger now!! Thank you 🙌
Love it. Slow and predictable. Great idea. Thank you.
WoW, what a clean, Safe setup - thanks
Thanks for sharing this video review. Great idea.
I do the same with my ATV. I use the winch on the bike. I go a lot on my own, so this is a safe way to do it. Awesome vid.👍👍
I busted out the rear window in my pickup trying to ride a rough running ATV up a 6-ft ramp into the back of it... A winch would have paid for itself just by saving the glass... :(
Great idea. I'm getting way too old to wrangle big bikes. This is ideal.
super thanxs ....awesome vid
Brilliant!
Beautifully thanks man
Nice bike 😊
Brilliant 👏
I'd ran into your video and tried your setup. It worked great. I don't have the upper body strength to push up my 250cc dirt bike up the ramp. Now I can load the bike by myself safely. Thank you for sharing.
That’s awesome! So glad to hear it helped.
How do you secure the winch to the bed?
Thank you ,Sir.....great help.
Most welcome!
The problem with a heavy bike is that once it starts going over the other way (i.e. away from you), there's not much you can do about it regardless of how strong you might be... At that point, it's a battle of weights and the bike is going to win... If my 800 lb Harley starts to go over to the other side, there's not much I can do about it, so I always keep it leaning slightly towards my side...
Back when I had a pickup, I considered building a winch setup that would allow me to put my Harley in the truck bed. The designs I was considering basically consisted of either a 4-wheel dolly for the front wheel so that it was strapped to it or a 4-wheel dolly for the entire bike... The dolly was winched up on tracks into the bed of the pickup... Since I already had a 14 ft utility trailer, I just decided to use it since it is lower anyway and that made the 6 ft ramp that I already had sufficient...
This is just what I’m looking for. How did you attach the angle iron to the winch?
Super kool
Very nice ! What kind of electric winch did you have on your truck ?
Thanks
Why not use some c channel to go over the back of the bed. Maybe use some c clamps to kinda keep it in place. You could line the inside with rubber or something
Do you leave the winch battery on a tender when not in use? Or is that batter y somehow connected to the main truck battery?
I don't understand how you got the winch hooked up. Do those ratchet straps behind and under the bed?
I Have a 6 1/2 foot bed also, have not bought the ramps but I'm eyeing a set that looks good. I'm hoping my africa twin will fit kitty corner, I've heard this is a very safe way to position the bike. Big benefit is that I can close my tailgate and pull the TT.
East Coast Yes it will fit kitty corner so you can close your tailgate. I personally don’t like doing it because it’s hard to have it tied down asymmetrically
@@backcountryadvmoto this is the exact reason I don’t angle the bike in the truck. It’s nice to close the tail gate, but it’s a challenge to get it tied down well.
Can you tell me what size bed is on that truck. It was hard to tell from camera angle. I have heard of this method before it definitely makes loading easier. Thanks for vid.
dave09650 it’s 6 1/2 foot. It’s a mega cab dually and it’s the only bed size available. An 8 foot bed would be more convenient so I can close the tailgate, but it works just fine
😎👍🏻
What ramps are you using ?
what length is the ramp? it looks a little difficult to do by walking the bike up. I'm thinking of buying the 10 foot ramp, next size up is 12' which is 6 foot folded maybe that's the better choice. your thoughts please.
East Coast Mine are 7 1/2 but yes the longer the ramp, the easier it is
Do you remember how thick the eye bolts are and corner steel?
Jonathan Lock I don’t offhand, but I picked up everything from Home Depot. The thicker the better
Thanks
Can you tell us how you hooked the straps to the edge of the bed?
My bed has hooks in the top corners. I used heavy duty carabiners to connect the straps to the hooks
What size is that battery? How many times can you use it before recharging it?
I don’t remember exactly what size it was it was just a 12 V deep cycle RV battery. One that I had laying around. I could use it several times before it needed to be recharged. I honestly only have used the set up a couple of times as I have a enclosed trailer now if I need to haul it anywhere, but works really well.
So I’m running into the issue of the winch being too low in the truck bed with your set up that it is pulling the bike more into the ramp rather than up the ramp. The ramps start to bend a bit as well. Bike weights the same as yours, about 550 lbs.
Hey thanks for the comment. Is the winch attached to the bed up high on the truck bed like I attached it in mine?
@@backcountryadvmoto about the same height , maybe a couple inches below. Maybe that makes a difference.
Maybe not, but there are a few factors that could come in to play. The height of the truck, the steepness of the ramp, is it an 8 foot bed or a 6 1/2? Mine is a 6 1/2.
@@backcountryadvmoto Mine is 6 1/2 bed, 10 ft ramp and stock height tundra.
You think it would be possible to load two bikes side to side with this? Only issue I can see is the winch is in the middle.
Yes, I think you would be able to do that
Thanks for the reply. Great video.
ive done it with 2 yamaha xs 600s, its possible
How did you hook it to the edge of the bed?
I second this. Would love to know.
Same
He goes up and over the bed rail and hooks it to the outside of the bed somehow. I think hooking it to the hole in the bed stake pockets would work just as well.
I take the easy way out, I ride my Africa Twin everywhere.
yayoi1 I do to, but in this case, I was having to travel through subzero temps and snow and ice.
Do you use a winch to go up hills as well?
No, watch any of my riding videos and you will see that I ride pretty damn hard on the “big” bikes. This was a old video and as I said, had a lot of questions on how I would load a bike without riding it up. This is a good safe way to do it without riding the bike up in the truck.
how much did you spend in addons?
marco son no clue, I haven’t kept track
Nice. I just ride it up my ramp onto the bed of my truck. *shrug shoulders*
Neo Matrix yeah, like I said in the video, I normally ride or walk it up, this is just an option.
Woah...easy with the attitude buddy. I must have missed that part. Sorry.
