Ok the marks you are seeing are from the wiper seal, this is normal for hydraulic seals. The wiper seal sits above the main seal that keeps the oil in. All hydraulic seals must leave a smear of oil on the shaft other wise the seals run dry and will wear fast. If you have a look at a hydraulic cylinder on machinery they will look similar to yours, also if you look at your car and it has gas struts on your boot lid or Bonnet they will show marks similar to your bike forks. So if there is no major scratches the seals are doing thier job. If you had excessie oil on your forks I would then be concerned.
That is good to know. Thanks for the informative comment.
Brilliant! Thanks Gary, just what I need to know, great info.
I called into Indian this morning and they're going to keep an eye on it. They said Indian are really good with warranty issues so I'm not stressing. They said the fork oil, seals and bushings all get replaced with the 24km service.
@BikesILike
Any oil on the fork tube's is not good. The seals are not doing their job. Sorry to say. Need new fork seals.
The best thing about an Indian Motorcycle is its not a piece of shit Harley.
I put rubber “bellows” on my ‘92 Revere to protect the forks, gives it a nice sort of retro look, and, protects the forks 100%👍😃
I did try and find some for my forks a little while ago Earl but couldn't find the right size diameter anywhere.
here in the uk , leaking forks can be an 'mot ' failure and must be fixed ,, seals are not doing what they are supposed to do and the chrome may be poor quality ---- warranty issue ;
Ok cheers Simon, thanks for that. I think I'll get them to have a look at it.
I'd be taking it to Indian asap and getting it checked and possible oil change on the forks. They may want to check the oil anyway

They said the fork oil, seals and bushings all get replaced with the 24km service. See @garyfrost813 comment, great description of what's going on.
That’s a piss poor chrome quality job and nothing more, think about dirt bikes pre upside down forks era were copping mud and crap day in day out and didn’t have issues….
Called into Indian this morning, we're going to keep an eye on it. They said Indian are really good with warranty items. As long as they back up their product, that's good by me.
@@BikesILike yeah they should cover that, it will eventually get into the seal so keep onto them.
Concerning, certainly. I’d get the shop’s opinion. You might want to get that corrected before you put on your diy fork protectors.
I called into Indian this morning Guy and they're going to keep an eye on it. They said Indian are really good with warranty issues so I'm not stressing. They said the fork oil, seals and bushings all get replaced with the 24km service. See @garyfrost813 comment, great description of what's going on.
What kind of suspension are the forks?, are both sides the same configuration?, or am I asking a stupid kweshin??🤣.
No good question. They're not separate function forks as far as I'm aware, so both the same.
I try and clean my for tubes after each ride because you are correct dried bugs are a threat to the seals.
Same here Jerry. Called into Indian this morning. We're going to keep an eye on it. They said Indian are really good with warranty items and the fork oil, seals and bushings all get replaced with the 24km (15,000 miles) service. I will still make up my fork leg protectors as it certainly can't hurt.
Don't the forks have dust covers to prevent that from happening? Seals internally and dust covers externally
You'd think so but I don't know. I pinned Gary's comment because he gave a really good description of why I'm seeing a film of oil on the fork legs. I checked other new Chief's on the floor of the dealer and they're all the same, they all have that oily film. The fork leg protectors will be a good thing as even a small sone chip can cause the fork legs to start wearing away at the seal.
Use some fork wax or as i do clean with gt85 on a mf cloth
Natural wear and tear for any unprotected fork tubes. How about old school fork gaitors? 🇦🇺
I did try and find some for my forks a little while ago Earl but couldn't find the right size diameter anywhere.
@@BikesILike ok, I guess you tried all the dirt bike manufacturers. I know I've seen em on HDs over the years as well. I wonder if a pneumatic hydraulic supplies business make them for non mc use but still fit for purpose? 🤔🇦🇺
@Hipporider Yeah I did. I found heaps for Harley's, but it appears the Indian shocks are an unusual size. My protectors will do the job. 😉
Dear Paul, first of all congrats on your videos! With regards to your problem I think I would see an Indian dealer to document this issue. Just to be be on the safe side. However, I ride a bobber dark horse and have not come across this problem yet. Maybe because this part is shielded of by fairing? Worth investigating. Just a thought. Best Regards from Germany…
Hey cheers Bernd! I did call into my Indian dealer this morning and the lead tech had a good look over it. We're going to keep an eye on it to see if it progresses further. He said Indian are really good with warranty issues if we need to take action. He said the fork oil gets changed at the 24km service and they replace seals and bushings at the same time. It's been logged with them so I can now relax and ride. Having the fork shrouds on your Bobber will serve you well to protect from stone chips etc. That's good! Great to hear from Germany!
Dear Paul, thank you for your swift reply. Now that you can relax and ride I hope you enjoy your fantastic Chief every day even more! This is why we bought these maschines.
Anyway, regarding your problem I have an XT500 from 1982 and is has fork bellows installed.
I think these bellows keep the dust and dirt away from the seals thus keeping the fork nice and tidy. Has been working for the past 40+ years for my old XT, and might be a reasonable and easy to install option for your Chief. Again, just a thought. By the way, I really like your videos with all the work and passion you put into it. Well done Paul and a big thank you from Germany. Best Regards, Bernd
Poor design on the forks.
You'll need new fork seals.😢
Not yet, read pinned comment ;)
My 03 Vegas & 2010 Vision have been flawless
Thank you
Fork leg protectors won't help as if there's been a film of oil it holds fine dust and slowly grinds away the hard chroming. I found that out when I ignored the same thing on a motorcycle back in 1985 and continued to ride it
Good to know, cheers Wayne.
@@BikesILike The bike was only 4 months old and I thought that the fork seals would bed in and just wiped them down with a soft cloth every now and then. Leaving it a bit to long to see the dealer about it they said it was negligence on my behalf and was not covered by warranty. I hope that you get the Chief sorted as it's a great looking and sounding machine
@@waynecameron4911 Cheers Wayne, I really appreciate that. Will call in to see them tomorrow.
My one year old sport chief is in the shop right now with a low oil pressure light on
Interesting. If you don't mind, can you keep me updated on what happens there?
@@BikesILike will do hopefully hear something today sometime
@ThatWeldingGamer Hope it's good news.
@@BikesILike after multiple calls to the dealership they've come up with the oil pressure switch and it's backordered no word on when it may be fixed so stuck in the cage for now
Thanks heaps for the update! Good to know it's nothing serious but sucks that the part is back ordered. Hope you don't have to wait too long.
