One thing Hera has said before is to make sure you're fully walled before clicking up. That's very important. People just randomly go all in feudal for no reason at lower levels. It's been a very common problem where I'd follow the advice in this video and then after I click up the opponent shows up with a very large army that I can't deal with. I'd lose a large number of villagers and then be in castle age without the economy to use it. I think there was a period of time where I'd lose more often than I'd win if I was first to castle age. So even if you prioritize making units and your walls are late you still want to get them down by the time you click up. It just makes playing for a faster castle age time a lot less risky.
Interestingly devs when developing AoE4 looked in it and in that game you can get more TC or build siege or get specific UU in feudal so you can snowball your enemy even if he went fast castle or somehow counter castle age units. Honestly i wouldnt mind ram being buildable in feudal to make game more interesting.
I only play on xbox but i have developed my own fast castle build. I dont use the auto village option because i feel that doing it on my own gives me more freedom to reach the best castle time possible. For me the fast castle seems to work out better in solos games rather than team games, but i usually enjoy going for pressure over booming.
I think it gives a ratio for villagers coming out, so new vills will automatically go to wood or gold, or food if berries/ hunt available. It was pretty awful, I turned it off straight away
What makes you win? 1000 elo players think it's a faster feudal age 2k players think it's going up to imp faster 3k player(s) thinks it's going up to castle faster
Hi Hera. I really like these videos in which you start all philosophical, I thought you were going to say that the best way to win, the one that brings the most honor, is attacking, based on Alexander The Great who was forward army pusher. Can you in the futuro cover something like that. The cowardness of the eco defender versus the early pressure. I am of a defender I piss a lot of people when I end up wining by “staying my base” I had to that a lot when I played Romans because they need a lot of eco in my opinion to get rolling strong in late imperial age.
the most important thing to focus is I think, to be able to calculate accurately what number of army your opponent may have at the time you decide to attack.

Once it is told what the best method is, it no longer is the best method because many will apply it and the scene will change, creating a new best method
I would like to know who is best for Booming. Up to Castle Age. Just opinions will do, the super-fastest mega-math vector list of calculations by SOTL is not necessary :D So my guess is, d'uh, Cumans, Hindustanis with cheaper villagers, Vikings with free wheelbarrows and thats about it, I guess. No huntables, no boars, no deers, no goats, no sheep, no fish. Maybe Slavs and Scots for their faster farming and wood cutting. I'd love them compared.
Hi Hera, Could you please make a video on how to counter mongols steppe lancer rush where players get to castle by 13min mark and spam lancers on open maps
My favorite part about fast castle builds is knowing you have a plan and a goal. If things don't go according to plan, then you still have a goal. You always know what you want to do, and as a newer player, this is very important for me. I don't know the best strategy or how to adapt with every civ, so have a few set build orders for a few civs is simply better for anyone with less than like a thousand games played with random civ. If a new player comes into AoE2 nowadays, they are at a bigger disadvantage than 20 years, because they don't know the game while everyone else does. This contributes to AoE2's rather closed ranked player base, no doubt made worse by how negative players are towards the new FC meta. I love how Hera (and some other pros) are trying to help newer players catch up in a variety of ways. It has certainly helped me a lot!
Agreed. If you can macro really well, it lets more time and focus for micro. That being said, don't only focus on macro. Know where to put your attention. I find it easier to train macro though.
@Nomatterwhat69 It's easier because it's not adversarial. Macro is a solo skill. If you mess up it's purely your own mistake. The opponent did nothing to contribute to it directly. But because you're solely responsible for the outcome of your macro you don't need to directly outplay your opponent or interact with them at all to macro better. You need to interact with them to win a micro battle. They have a say in how that goes.
Hey Hera - love and appreciate your work, but you are pronouncing "palisade" wrong - it's pal-i-sayde, not pal-i-side. If you correct this I'll subscribe to your Patreon :)
hello Hera. I subbed to your patreon and increased from 750 elo to almost 1k now. Its amazing. Maining Khmer atm, super fun. I have a question. How many farms do you recommend to have on feudal to sustain some Scouts production but also get a quick uptime? Im doing too many and running into wood problems as soon as I hit castle age. These magic numbers I feel are super important to know
I bought AOE2 nearly week ago for some nostalgia, its been 20 years atleast since i played it. Your vids just got me through Hard AI only 2 wins so far but a few days ago i lost to moderate. Once i get Extreme down im gonna move in to ranked. Thanks for all the help.
Good stuff. I’m more of a TG player. 800 games played to 1v1 100 games played. How do you like the custom random feature now? I’m comfortable with 8-9 civs
i think that on my experience playing the game and watching pros play in different maps, i would say it's debatable if getting fast to castle age is the most optimal strategy overall to win, only because i think it depends on the player playstyle, thinking in players like vivi, or tatoh that can get ahead extending feudal age play, and finding unique ways to make the most out of the limitations of feudal age or dark age, but maybe this specific playstyles are more of an exception, (or maybe we should embrace more people to find their own unique style). anyways i had not realizaed that you can get an eco lead without atacking your opponent, in castle age, the way you explain it gave me a new perspective on getting ahead in vills in feudal vs in castle age, and how valuable it is to passivly punish your opponent through booming (Sorry if bad english)
you should only stay in feudal if you know what you are doing and you are sure to do damage to your opponents economy and denying the enemy´s Castle Age for most of us (under 1600, for putting a random ELO) we are better off walling and going castle ASAP for those sweet techs/strategies (knights, monks, extra TCs).
So we wait for 15 minutes to match? Nah, I'd rather lose some here and there. Plus, it's possible to win against PC in equal skill levels. It's just a bit harder
I dont agree castle age is the best age. Feudal gives a better power spike. Its possible to go full feudal vs castle age. Its not (really) possible to go full dark vs feudal age.
if its that important wouldnt it make sense to make like 4-5 less vills to click up abit faster? Or is the eco aspect of those 4-5 vills still consider "greater" then get out a knight 2 min earlier?
one good thing with slav archer opening is that your opponent will often be on skirms or even elite skirms and you can transition into cav (same with franks, khmer etc)
There is a price to pay for it. While you're researching castle age the opponent is making villagers and you're not. Even if both players have no TC idle time or they both have exactly the same idle time (say it's both 2 minutes) you're starting with a smaller economy. So at the end when Hera says that even if you lose 10 villagers on the way up you can make those back with extra TCs that kinda handwaves how bad the situation is. You're not just down 10 villagers. You're down like 14. It's even worse if you got wheelbarrow because that tech is benefitting fewer villagers and your economy might no longer be large enough for the tech to be worth it. You never click wheelbarrow with 24 villagers and 4 farms. So imagine if you suddenly fell back down to 25 vils. You'd probably wish that tech you clicked earlier was 3 extra vils instead. So I'm just calling Hera out for downplaying how bad the situation is if you click up and then lose a large amount of vils on the way up. You can make up those losses with extra tcs? Saying that makes it sound like less of a bad situation than it actually is.
"The single best way to win: be better than your opponent". Get to the next age faster without getting beat before, so be better at managing eco and military in dark & feudal. So, be better, overall, than them.
I guess a good followup video is what to do if your opponent gets a faster castle time
i have a video on that!

Hera: get gud
Hera after watching Red Phosphoru play: ‘Maybe he’s onto something…’
Hera: you cant always say it depends, there is core concept that works
Also Hera: this core concept is not always correct play, it depends

You could say it depends if a core concept is applicable or not…
After the first part, didn’t he literally say “which I agree is true to some extent”? Tiny bit misleading lol

Instructions unclear, lamed my own berry bushes
Wait the berry bushes are a thing to harvest? I just thought they were supposed to make my base look nice and pretty!
Mine villagers couldst not find the berries, no wonder thou art victorious, I shalt abdicate
Why does the voice over fits almost perfectly the camera from 1:57 to 2:24 🤣. Great video BTW
Breaking news: Age of Empires 2 professional player Hera says RedPhosphoru was right all along!!!

This is one game I always come back to and have a blast. Thanks.
I love winning in feudal age. I am 1200 ELO and like to decide the game before one of us can save the resources for castle age.
And now Hera will single handedly lower the win rate of people rushing castle age because they seen a Hera video telling them to do that haha!
spoiler: be good at the game/better than your opponent
just don't be below 3k elo and you'll be fine, is my take-away from this vid

I was playing arena and got to castle age before the opponent and he just resigned as soon as I hit castle age. 11 😂
ive been thinking of joining patreon, which category do you recommend?
light cav best value imo, hussar good for community feeling and if you play consistency
the real question, is it better to do the red phospheru minimum 19 pop castle or to go with more vils in feudal
I had just stopped seeing blind FC builds on Arabia every game (1100 ELO) and you go and release this 😭
😂
Isn't picking up a relic like making a free villager in castle age ?

How to take your training
Sorry to say but I watch many high level streamers and gamers and Hera does not cut the mustard for me as a top player
Here before my future opponent sees this
I TOUCHED 1000 ELO WITH THIS STRATEGY , I AM SO POOR AT FURTHER DEVELOPING THAT I ALMOST 90% OF TIMES DID NOT HAVE 3RD TC WHILE WINNING
I'm now 1150 elo. I've only ever used 1tc
I suppose it is not to just boom every game and hope the enemy does not kill you in early-mid game. But what do I know, I am just a hardstuck 1050
Haven’t watched the video yet but I’m guessing a faster castle age time into a strong boom to get an eco lead.
Thank you very much
But what if opponent kills your vills with scouts on the way to castle age
That's what walls are for
So based on that last clip, the key is to micro so hard that you don't lose a single vil to 15 skirmishers free firing at them for 10+ volleys... 😂
Im trying slavs archers with the farms bonus to get thecrossbows powerpike.. 1Tc catapults and monks kinda all in
one good thing with slav archer opening is that your opponent will often be on skirms or even elite skirms and you can transition into cav (same with franks, khmer etc)
If this video doesnt say " boom into defensive castle " im gonna be disappointed
im supposed to go castle age to win?! i never thought of that......
commenting without watching. I'm guessing... forward castle drop?
edit- i was sorta right but not really
It's bad if I have army on field moreover some one can ram it down once you lose army, other guy also get villager lead. And you stuck with 1 or 2 tc
How about hire Hera as your 2v2 partner?
basically, go FC if u can
