I actually think that the pause + explanations are the best part, not annoying. Especially to lower level players, watching and listening at the same time for a full game can be tiresome/overwhelming. Pausing, explaining your next steps and executing them makes for a more didactic experience IMO and helps develop the critical thinking skills
Indeed. Nice stop to actually the line of thoughts and how to properly react to every situations and how he said: "It is the best strat? Maybe not, but it´s accordingly about what I am doing. If I am down with KT then I will fully go KT, i won´t silly upgradte to Imperial if what I am doing it´s fully rush with KT." Amazing thought about doing 1 step at the time. GG m8
Hera made extreme mode look easy 😊. I am sure people new to aoe2 will think, “Oh I can do it too” and will soon understand “what aoe2 is” and “who Hera is” 😊
stuff that hera didn't mention 1- scouting with 3 sheep 2- grouping units and buildings 3- extream ai foucuses of booming when the enemy is ahead by score 4- building houses during walling prevents you from being housed in feudal 5- if the enemy scout rushed, make spearman and wall the resources 6- usage of hotkeys for every single building selecting and unit production 7- pick archer armour in castle age so you can survive a mango shot or few knights 8- in case of a real game, you'll need the resourses to replenish your losses during fights
Bro. the minutes you pause the game are the most I listen carefully. If anyone gets bored of that pauses I reccomend them not to waste their time because that pauses are the purpose of the video. so dont worry about them. more pause equals more important information. thank you for your effort and help.
I like to play RTS and use it to think about my own life. Where am I holding resources I could be deploying? Am I ready to survive predictable threats? Am I balancing my effort properly on researching new skills vs. producing what is available to me right now? What can I reasonably scout for to plan for? I liked this video specifically because of the market line. Everybody needs to use the market sometimes. Things change. The balance required changes. It’s okay if you need outside help to help correct imbalances.
I think this is great at showing how a thinking player comes out ahead. Getting down mechanics in any game or RTS is important but if you're not thinking about your next move, you're going through the motions. I've seen this before in Starcraft 2 and AoE2, people that stick to a build or a game plan and follow it too rigidly, especially if they hit resistance, they think doing more of the same will work sometimes. They're not exploring what tools they should be deploying. Also from personal experience this is where I tend to lose a lot when I've been rusty. You spend more time thinking about mechanics, hotkeys, etc that are meant to be second nature vs planning and thinking your next move that will actually lead to winning (or at least not dying terribly).
Longtime viewer here… what you do isn’t easy. Especially playing and commenting every detail. You excel within this game. Excellent teacher. I’m stuck on hard mode 😂😂 guys walking through extreme like it’s easy mode. GG
for anyone struggling with AI, the easy way to cheese it is that AI really overcommits into counter units. It will see one archer and go full skirm. So just tech switch into scouts or knights and be ready again for it to go all pikes
I suggest you focus on heras build order. My low elo friends don’t play with a plan. Your plan should be getting to castle age under 20 game minutes, it is incredibly easy to do once you know the simple build orders
I will never be this good because i'm too old and my reflex are overwhelming for all these multi tasks but i'm a better player now since I watched many of your vids, this is very generous of you for sharing 👍you have a reel talent for explaining this game, thanks for sharing.
I love this video! It contains usable advice for complete beginners without overwhelming them, but it is not boring even for more experienced players, as we can still use it for slight optimizations of our strategies.
I love watching videos like this, then getting into a game against hard AI, then repeatedly losing my archers to a mangonel or a tc and eventually losing the game in general
This was a really great video to show the theories behind all the decisions. Reminds me of the original opening cinematic, two old kings playing chess.
This is the most clear and complete Guido to how to play the game. I always have a strong feudal but run out of steam in castle when managing everything gets overwhelming. This is an incredible guide
Lots of information in this one. Looks and sounds easy when you are explaining it. Key takeaway is if you're not planning each age then you're planning to fail. I enjoyed when you paused and gave your thoughts. Thanks Hera
Amazing video. Thanks for uploading this Video, Hera. I feel this is the one (after thousands of AoE I have seen) that will really help me out and answered the question I have been asking myself everytime. How to improve my game? It´s really "easy" but you need to know: 1. "Ok, my civi is franks so some paladins will be awesome" -----> You need to know every CIVI if you are playing random civi, so maybe I am a casul, but I hardly know the civis advantages. 2. How to properly react when the tons of resources bulk up. You did amazing spending resources and making a logical sense about it. That really helped me. 3. The line of sight for: ok I am going KTs then some siege to end the Game. the bulletpoint will be Gold Unit Trash unit (to support Gold Unit) Some Siege to advance with your push. Nice piece of advice there, how to slowly but consistenly keep growing the economy. Then, when doing the upgrades and as well doing some Monks predicting the possible KTs that will counter my unit. Great video, really simple actually. I am 900 ELO, but with 70 w aand 78 L. So, most of the matches are not "for a 1000 ELO" player, I believe maybe 1200 would be most appropriate. But yeah, I hope to grow in the followings weeks. Thanks again nice video.
This is your best video yet for beginners. Super helpful, loved that you paused and explained your thought process. I wish I could like the video multiple times, thanks a lot for making this !’ ❤
Hera thank you for the video, I'm going to be rewatching this as much as I can to learn!! Can definitely tell the effort you put into it, I speak for everybody when I say we appreciate it 😃
So much of AoE2 is about just being solid!. I used to play a ton of custom scenario and DM all the back since 2000, thus I have a ton of army comp familiarity and typically always know what to build and when to attack. Yet opponents that are just more solid (really efficient eco transitions) can often win outright by just having clean timing / eco advantages. Hera is the best example of peak "solid" play imo
I know pro players and high elo players delete their walls for more space, but I think for those below 1200 elo atleast, it can do more harm than good. Atleast for me, around 1100 elo, so many times either myself or my enemy manage to sneak through a group of knights/light cav through the TC. It only takes 5seconds of not looking and your eco can be in danger, especially your woodline. Just have to say I loved this video! I think it makes for such a good video adressing the problems many players have, or dont know they have. Personally, the part about always having a game plan and how you expand your economy really helped me :) I would love to see a video like this where you are defending more and dealing with enemy units in your base. Maybe give your extreme ai a little headstart?
You should do a series similar to Tatoh's "aprendamos" where he climbs the ladder with a smurf account and explains what to prioritize, the "why" to all of his actions, how to read your opponent and progressively adds details to his gameplay as he climbs the ladder (for example: He starts luring deer at around 1800 elo, sheep scouting around 1400, not sure etc.. ). Would be amazing
Am i the only one that hears the haziness in the microphone for Hera's youtube videos? When i watch his live stream there is none of this but here every time he talks it is like someone rubbing a snare drum.
Consistently spending my resources is the thing I need to focus on. That is definitely my weak point. Your explanations are easy to understand. Thanks for posting.
It would be good to show how to react under extreme pressure, from an all-in position from your enemy, tower rush, or a fast imp with bombard cannons for instance. Those are deadly and is hard to react to them
I think you could have made this into three separate videos. More work for the editors though 😂 anw i expected it to be a low quality commentary, but mashallah I learnt a lot
I played the game about 20 times while I watched the video to get an idea, I always lost after Castle Age, I pushed back with knights, but the AI always got first to imperial and destroyed me at the end, it's incredible how easy looks when this guy is playing
Struggling with deer luring on dark age is very common for me, even after 500h on DE, and more than a thousand in the classic, at least 1 vil will screw himself if i try to lure boar as well, or 2 will get iddle for a few secs. Its funny how i am a big fan of strategy games, and have thousand of hours on many, yet i still have issues learning or executing certain stuff, similar to my lack of skills on fighting games, some games i just cant get better at.
Great vid! Maybe for another video you could do something similar in style but for intermediate+ (1400+)players. You already do it really well in your @heragameplay channel but most of the time you either dominate or get all inned by something weird. Maybe if you play a game that you feel has good teaching points you could go back over the recording, or another idea would be to do more specific videos that are centered on one topic, like scouting or civ matchup etc. great ideas for patreon maybe? If there was more in your library I know I would subscribe.
