For Tip #4, an easy way to do this is by going to the market, holding “shift”, and clicking “sell wood”, “sell food,” and “sell stone.” Then go ahead and mass monks with the gold you acquire. 30
I know youre joking but I would say I can do decent dark age BUT the first 4 seconds are absolutely unreal to follow :D how do you get your vills to build the houses and start scouting so fast :D no chance
I've been playing this game for over twenty years and I'll say my number one tip like any game or sport is being able to think the game. Notice Hera and Viper explaining the game as they're playing in real time against very good opponents. Can you do that against someone on your level, analyze the play and explain what you're doing? You can clickity-clack as fast as anybody but if you can't think the game in real time and make the proper decisions then that will hinder your potential. Often the difference between professional athletes is just that. For NHL fans, when Maxime Talbot won the Stanley Cup in 2009, he mentioned that he is far from the most skilled player but because he can think the game better than those with more raw skill than him, this allows him to play at the NHL level as opposed to the minor league.
And how do you train that? I am having even problems to communicate with my mates on Teamspeak, because I am so busy. I know exactly what you want to say with your point. But can you train that? 😅 Viper and the others are communicating in Discord and are reading twitch chat and play properly. How?
Kia ora nice vid, very helpful. Would love a "How to practice" tips and tricks video too. Maybe diving into the best way to set up the custom scenario to practice different army micro
This bonus tip with drop-off working with farms is especially nice for Khmer, which can build a farm basically anywhere without penalty. So you can hunt some deer with a group of villagers and then instead of walking back to drop off the food, just build a farm right there, then get back to hunting. (Though this might not be best if it's somewhere where your enemy's army is likely to pass through.)
Building farms in dark.age to save drop off time when deer could just be pushed to TC.. I don't know about that one. Bur I guess one in 100 maps that might make some sense. Very Gimmicky though.
Top 5 tips & tricks to get better at AoE2: 1. Attack move (or patrol) any time you move with your army 2. Spend your resources (don't float any unless you have an specific reason) 3. Don't watch fights (unless micro is really needed) 4. Use formations & stances (know your commands; know your hotkeys) 5. Add more productions buildings (to spend your resources) I will add some more out-of-the-game tips: 1. practice your openings and your micro against AI (specially stands and attack move) until you're doing it good enough enough (no more than 10sec of idle TC time). This is difficult to practice in ranked games with all the stress you may have. 2. Re watch and analyze your loses (this is probably the most important thing to get better) looking for errors and mistakes that you could improve on, specially strategies and timings, army compositions and tactics in crucial fights and moments. 3. Drill the parts of the game where you're lacking. Once you identified your weaknesses, drill those parts of the game for rapid improvement. You can replay a game and make a savefile in a particular moment to replay it against the AI or some friend.
Tell me more about this: "You can replay a game and make a savefile in a particular moment to replay it against the AI or some friend." In old AOE you would just save the game. In DE I did not know this was possible is it?
All 5 Tips I already incorporated into.my gameplay.. But the bonus tip I did not know about O.O Thanks for that Hera that was really useful to know. Because back in Original AoE2 when a villager carries resources and startes gathering different ones the carried ones were just lost to the void.
Tasking a lumberjack to gold back in the days removed the wood instantly from his hands. Now it's only when he's starting to actually gather the gold that he will lose the wood (of course if he didn't drop it off to the mining camp by finishing to build it)
Hey Hera. Your video brings me to speak more about producing military units efficiently (#1 Add More Production). What I recognized is that it's hard for me to produce military units efficiently. I want to produce like the pros with individual control groups (I only use 'Select all *X*' as '5' for all barracks then I use 5, R, T, Z for producing units as Champs, Pikes, etc. (6 = Select all Stables -> T, Z, U, I, SPACE BAR, etc.) but in a lot of cases when it get stressful I only click 5, 6, 7, 8 and click the military units manually). I could imagine that a lot players with 1500+ have similar issues and want to get better with this. For everything else I use a l w a y s hotkeys. - I would be interested why you use which buildung on which control group button (1, 2, 3, 4...)? I suffer to use control groups for this. How you know every times instant that it's the right button? - How I can hold the numbers of stables (as an example) keep up to date that I dont lose to much time to add the new stables for my hotkeys? ('Select all stables' is quite easy to use but can cause problems.) - Are both only training, day in day out? - Why you use E R T and not R T Z or W E R? - Did u have problems when you pressed 3 E for archers but maybe 5 R for light cav? And so on. Maybe it could be good content for your channel. Thanks a lot for your work. I enjoy your tutorials and your 1vs1 videos.
I heard something in a survivalist coaching stream that is a good addition to tip #3 of not watching fights and that is to spend the res before taking micro heavy fights. Often with ranged units/siege when looking away is not an option, one can pull the army back slightly, maybe to the previous vantage point, fix the eco, and resume the aggression.
Great tips! Whenever someone on Reddit asks what they can do to get better, and they're sub-1000 Elo, I generally just tell them: never stop making villagers! If they do this, odds are they will win vs their opponent with 5 minutes of idle TC time in the Feudal age.
Only being able to watch this from a phone, and not having a PC, I live vicariously through you in aoe. If the Canadian economy turns around, one day I can have a PC and learn the great tactics of Hera!
Got 600hrs in the game, didn't know that res get's auto dropped off (I only thought it was farms with the wood...) when building an economic building. Thanks!
I think the big reason people watch fights is because they don't KNOW if it'll be good or bad. As you get more comfortable, you can start to step back, but if you're less experienced it's a lot harder to make that call.
Number 1 made such an improvement when I started doing it. I used to be overloaded with resources but couldn’t spend it. Calling the gg with tons of resources in your bank is pretty annoying. I also started writing things down to apply in game because when i’m under pressure (because face it, its a pretty intense game) its hard to change strategy.
Man this video is made for not Hera watchers, If you watch Hera's livestream or videos, you pick these tips and tricks along the way. Surprisingly I already know all of these thanks to the livestream.
Having the option for units to attack move on their own as soon as they come out of the production building would be an amazing quality of life improvement. Albeit, it can be overpowered and more difficult for the attacker to win battles against defenders.
I think watching your fights as a noob is actually not that bad because more likely than not you have a general idea at best of what is going to happen and understanding what just happened is probably more impactful than a few more seconds of fixing your eco. Definitely still better to mention as people don’t fix their eco enough
Tip 2 is for DE, in the original age of kings you had to drop the resources before building something or you would lose them. No auto stock after the building is done. I still have the habit of manually dropping everything, even though I know it’s not needed anymore.
Nice video! The tip 5 reminds me of a frecuent doubt I have when I play the game: how we can "calculate" the amaont of vils that we need in each resourses? For example, its well known that we need 6 vils on farms to mantain the villager production in 1TC, so, its easy to asume that we need 12 farmers for 2TC and 18 farmers for 3TC. Following that logic and resuming the initial question, can you make a video exaplaining how to calculate the amaunt of vils necesary for X or Y? (how many in farms/gold for knights? how many in wood/gold for archers? and so on). I think there is no point in make a video listing everithing becaouse it will be too long and hard to remember but it will be SO USEFUL if there is a "formula" to know "oh, every knight cost 60 food and 75 gold, so I need X many vils on gold and Y many vils on farms" and improve our economic macro that way. Cheers from a neigbor from Argentina!
ive been having bad luck finding you on twitch lately, are you streaming these days? less hours? a particular time or something? ps great video, very useful tips!
I was a 900 elo player not so long ago. Your "spend your resources" tip changed my gameplay and now I'm pushing 1200. If anyone is stuck around 1000 my tips for you: Scout your opponent - This is so underrated. Low elo games are full of mistakes. If you can see what your opponent is doing you'll be surprised how many mistakes he is making and you can punish him on the spot. One production building for every 20 pop - I have lost countless games while having thousands of resources in post-imp setup. Because I only had the two stables that I made in feudal. Make one production building for every 20 pop you have. 3 for 60 pop, 4 for 80 pop and so on.
What's better to get early game. Upgrades for the lumber/mill or villagers from the resources spent getting those upgrades? What should be prioritized?
I did not know about the honorable mention tip. I always sent my villagers back to drop off their resources before they went from wood to farms. I am going to save so much time not walking around now!
#1 is quite opposite in team games. - Newer players build hundreds of stables before they use 1, as if they are bombard cannons. But they have 0 dmg - they are production buildings.
Got a quick strategy to ask, do you think you can douche the gold on gold rush with a fast castle build in feudal ? Like set up for a fast castle then just douche the centre after going to feudal ? Obviously not needing the early gold cause you’ll pick up the centre 😅😂😂 let me know what you think 😂
"Double the stables is double the production. Double the production is double the elo!" So if I figure out the average number of production buildings Hera makes in a game, and simply make twice as many as that every time, my elo will skyrocket to 6000?? BRB!
I took a break for a few months to play aom and since returning attack move and patrol have felt super broken. I don't know if it's changed or im just not used to it anymore but two things real stand out (1) the delay is like 2 seconds now before they actually engage? And (2) target selection seems really bad. Like two years ago the rule was that at a 1:2 ratio knights with +2 was a fair fight against xbow. In my last game i patroled 30 knights with +2 into 40 xbow and they got obliterated. Is that just how it is now? Or what am i supposed to do when engaging? Has anything changed or is my memory failing me?
#4, spending resources. LOL, back in the old days of LAN parties and the original CD version, we thought it was a good strategy to always have plenty of reserves, and if we did not have at least 1000 of a resource, we hesitated to spend it on anything, because what if we soon need it for something else. So we not only floated lots of resources, we even thought that it is a good thing to do so :)))
For Tip #4, an easy way to do this is by going to the market, holding “shift”, and clicking “sell wood”, “sell food,” and “sell stone.” Then go ahead and mass monks with the gold you acquire.
