- I’ve wanted a Dusky-headed #Conure for a long time!
I finally found one! What’s she like?
Like a conure, but she’s quieter and more cuddly!

I have a dusky and he is soooo fun!!
They really are amazing parrots!
My 23 year old Conure Charlie passed away in August 2023. I had her since six weeks old and absolutely adored her. She was intelligent and a very good talker - said her name constantly, plus another dozen words and phrases, including my laugh and the sound of my car starting. She was a food dunker - everything larger than a seed had to be wet - she loved music and would play a cowbell while attempting to mimic a song- she loved Led Zeppelin! My Dusky was loud when she wanted something, and moody/nasty when upset. But most of the time she was a delight. She liked people, male and female. In a crowded room of 15 or so, she could always find me. Everyday we'd sit by the window and she would "talk" endlessly about her day. I didn't know she was female until she was 15 and started laying eggs. "Charlie" had an obsession with textiles and you'd have a hole in your shirt within seconds of her landing on your shoulder. I went through several cage blankets because she ate them. I loved Charlie more than anything...when enough time passes I hope I'll find another Dusky companion.
I hope you get a new Dusky or other parrot. Sounds like you know how to proive a great home - Sorry for your loss
I got a dusky a few weeks ago. I had been looking for another bird for awhile now and just happened to come across a breeder. When I contacted her, she said it was her first clutch of duskies and she couldn't believe how sweet and friendly they were. Of course, I ended up with one of the babies, and I couldn't be happier. He's so fun and friendly. It didn't take him long at all to adjust to being in a new home and new people. In fact, it's hard to get him back in the cage! He's really stubborn. Lol!
Make sure to have a friend for your Dusky. Mine is like Velcro, even tho she has several cage mates. It will help your awesome bird stay or get more awesome!
Our previous sun conure who is now passed used to sleep in my hand like that ( on her back ) was the cutest thing
That’s pretty sweet. I bet you miss her- It’s hard losing these little guys. Little, but their affect is big on our hearts.
Really appreciate all your species introductions!! You never have a toy for them to play with when you’re holding them. That would be a good thing to teach your audience - by manipulating the environment you can naturally prevent hand mouthing, clothing destruction, etc. It also teaches independent play behavior.
Toys - they usually have no interest in them when they’re with me! But I like your idea, maybe I’ll try again
I’m watching one for my buddy. They are very social and have unique personalities!
Yes, fabulous birds! You are lucky!
Just put down a deposit on a yellow sided GCC. It was between that and s duskie. Both very cuddly. We decided on the gcc because they are suppose to be quieter. The few hours we handle them both did not make any noise. Granted only 4 weeks old.
Enjoy your GCC!
She's so cute! I've never seen one in person but we had one at the rescue I volunteer for. She was living with a foster family
She is fantastic! I adore her!
Do you think it would be friends with a gcc? I have a pair of gcc but am thinking of adding a dusky.
3 parrots means you'll have 'an odd man out'. I don't believe you can go wrong with a Dusky, but get 2! :)
My dad in his old age didn’t want any animals but a dog, but my mom did. My dad died in 2008 so we went to a great pet shop in Las Vegas and we got my mom a dusky conure. One thing to know if you want to adopt a bird is they might outlive you. We love Jazzy (we were Utah Jazz fans)! My mother has a relationship with this bird like I have never seen before! I believe the bird thinks my mother is her offspring, because Jazzy grooms my mother! She nibbles on my mothers face, ears, and even eyebrows and eye lids! But never bites down on my mother! But she will bite down on fingers of anyone else if they reach into her cage! But once she is sitting on your lap or finger she settles down. We love that bird! But that bird only loves me and my mother especially my mother!
That is awesome! I’m finding that Aegean is gentle too- yes, parrots tend to like their flock. Other people can be tolerated! Lol thank you for posting!
Super tierno
Gracias
Cute!
We adopted a Dusky 3 years ago, very sweet girl. She’s bonded with me instead of my wife, guess she likes men. She was 9 years old when we got her, her previous owner passed away and she was under a lot of stress. We had a cockatiel about ten years ago so we were prepared when she arrived (new cage and everything in it was new, nothing used) she lets me crack her pin feathers and likes to preen my beard, lol. She knows when it’s bed time and flies to her cage where I made a small bed box with a bird warming pad under the blanket in the box. As I’m typing this she’s napping on my chest by my neck under her little baby blanket, she’s so cute when she dreams and makes little sounds. She gets upset when I leave the room and calls me with different words which is funny. I refuse to clip her flight feathers and I don’t take her outside. In the morning, if we didn’t get up at the regular time she slowly starts to make noises trying to see who’s awake until she starts squawking but not constantly. She is jealous of the chihuahuas and the cat when I pet them so I have to be careful she doesn’t bite them.
How awesome! Yes, Dusky-headed Conures are amazing. I don’t know if their color or lack of - generally- loud noise is why people miss out and why they aren’t more popular. It sounds like you need another Dusky for your wife! What’s your girls name?
Good around children ages 9-15?
My dusky is in love with my 8 year old daughter. IN LOVE
Congrats on your new baby girl, I've had 2 in the past, my Kiwi (a rescue), went to the Rainbow Bridge last year, she was 18. I miss her so much. Duskys are very sweet and loving little fur balls, what they lack in vibrant colors they make up with personality, and yes they do like to sleep on their backs I remember the first time I saw her sleeping like that I freaked out needless to say she was startled awake and if parrots cam give dirty looks I got one that day. My first one ICricket, hand fed and was sugar sweet but I lost her when she got startled and flew out the door during a wind storm, we never found her. Cricket had one wing clipped so she couldn't fly straight and got disoriented. We looked for her for 3 months. Ever since that day I clip both wings on all my babies. You'll find that Duskys have strange tastes in foods too, they like to eat foods that they shouldn't. Cricket world dive bomb the butter and forget about bringing shrimp home I had to lock her in her cage or she would try to steal it, she would get a little piece when it was cooked. Kiwi would see a steak and would try to steal it from your plate. I've been looking for a breeder because I really want another Dusky but I haven't found one in Florida where I live, but I'll keep looking. Anyway sorry this is so long but I really wish you the best with your baby
Hi Millie - what part of Florida are you in?
I'm loving my Dusky so far. They are not easy to find, I agree. I got lucky!
@@ParrotBliss hi, I live in wpb, you're right there aren't many places that that have even heard of duskies, caught your video on plets and linnies last night, I have 3 plets and I love them to death, looking forward to getting a linnie sometime in the future. I'm going to get your cbd oil for my cuban amazon who's been feather picking, nothing has worked with her... keeping my fingers crossed. Love watching your videos with your babies.
@@milliealeman8756 oh! I have Linnie eggs, expect them to hatch soon! Send me a message on parrotbliss.com or Instagram messenger
She is lovely! I’m sure we don’t often see them because they don’t have the vibrant colors. I would call her a sophisticated little lady. Does she have a mate? ❤️🥰❤️
No, that’s the thing! I turned down a 2nd Duskie- maybe next year but I just couldn’t. Full flock and focused on Kami then. So, I chose to spend more time with her and let her have GCC flock memebers- and she does! She loves them!
I understand. Maybe in the future. 😊
@@1hawaii21 yeah-
Hi, I just recently bought a dusky and the reason why I wanted them is because they kind of remind me of a Sun Conure. I’ve just heard they’re not as loud. I recently came across your videos I have, and I live in a one bedroom apartment 620 ft.² I have two rainbow lorikeets which I love them they can be a little noisy but I love them and they’re not as messy as the world says, and I have a lovebird name Phoebe, she’s a hybrid a fisher peach face, and I have a cinnamon turquoise green cheek, and then I have my new dusky she’s about 10 weeks old and I love her dearly now this is only day one, but she’s so sweet. Thank you for this video because there’s not many videos about them.
Congratulations on your new Dusky! I love mine too - any suggestions for me for topics on them?
@@ParrotBliss well, I’ve only had mine for a day, but I love her. She hasn’t really made much noise. Everyone else’s noisier than she is right now, but give it a week or two lol but I will get back to you after a couple months because that is a good question, but like you said, in the video they’re underrated and I wish they were more visible to the public versus the Sun Conure the owner of the bird shop came out and this was when it was really warm out. He has steps and I’m wheelchair-bound so I can’t get in his store but he came out with her and she perched on my hand and I’m like Yep I’m taking her home lol I love green she’s perfect
@@parrotman87parrot_man56 OMG! I love that you didn’t let a limitation keep you from going to the shop- mine have been not so loud- but you may need another! They are so social- I think they keep each other company- yes, keep me updated 🙂
Thank you for all the information. She is so beautiful! I have a 3year old Turquoise Yellow GCC, and I was wanting a friend for her. I was wondering if you feel a parakeet would work as a companion for her?
No! Parakeets are sweet, GCC are trouble! Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but no. Another conure.
@@ParrotBliss Thanks so much for your advice! Another GCC it shall be. :)
@@littlem39 Sure! You’ll be happy and have happy parrots!
would a dusky head live with a sun conure I they are both really tame My sun I raised from a baby the Dusky I adopted from a friend who was afraid of him fo he is/was a biter he nips me some but has gotten calmer. He is only 6 months older than my Sun. They kinda got along but both can be nippy to one another.
Yes, I would expect them to get along. May need time to adjust- don’t initially put them together if they nip each other. Let them bond first 🦜😀
I need some advice, we are planning to leave the Country, my Dusky is my baby and I can never think of not taking him, my daughter went overseas, and even after making all the preparations she could think of to take her Dusky, they would not let her on the flight! They told her she could leave her in Cargo, which frightened her of course, and refused. I am clueless as to what I can do to be able to take him with me, please offer me any helpful advice on what I can do to not run into any problems like this, much appreciated!
I don’t know how long your flight is - people ship birds all of the time- which I can’t get myself to do- but that is how most of the US has parrots. They come from a few states where the weather is more conducive to parrots living outdoors. Depending on your flight, research. Check to see how parrots are shipped. There is a way- it always happens. I have no clue how it does or does not happen safely.
how do you spell her name?
Aegean
I don't have personal experience with Dusky, but almost every source I have read indicates that they are louder than GCC. This may not be true at a very young age though.
Thanks for posting- I’ll be finding out!
Actually I've had GCC and now have a Dusky, he is much quieter than they were, he is very playful and likes getting into things. He is the only bird I have, so he is very clingy and likes to be either with me or my husband almost all day long, and he doesn't like being on his back!
@@aminagreene Yes, my Dusky Us significantly quieter so far too- love her- you should get a buddy for your Dusky 😃
@@ParrotBliss
I think one is enough responsibility for me!
He is in reality like an emotional support bird for me, he goes with me almost everywhere. I have had my daughter's Dusky with him a lot in the past, who is a female, and he wasn't as clingy or cuddly with me, he preferred her attention more...I heard that happens when you get a second bird,
Thank you for the video
Sure. Do you have a desk you or are you thinking of getting one?
mines the opposite of urs lol and a male
Fantastic, right?
