late 2010s? are you 12 years old? Hipsters were really annoyingly relevant already in 2012. It peaked like in 2014ish

you're right dude, after 2014 pop culture became politicized and hipsters either became SJWs or just grew up

Lets say you're actually a lumberjack, drink cheap beer, love store brand coffee, drive a '97 Jeep Cherokee with a permanent fishing pole & a tool box in the back, but have short hair, clean shaven, no tattoos, own a dumb phone, and own a G-Shock watch, are you a hipster?

Hippies were a counter culture and they became more mainstream Yuppies.
Subcultures naturally start as a counter culture, but then naturally become more popular.
Hipsters have a fashion statement but also are an expression of a counter culture. Part of that is tattoos and piercings. Twenty+ years ago this was pretty rare as part of punk subculture. Now it’s become pretty mainstream.
Another trend has to do with fedora hats. That used to be the ‘hip’ thing to wear by crooners. Those and berets were also worn by fans of jazz in the 50s and 60s. Recently fedoras and berets have become more mainstream.
Then like all fashion trends, things will fade out. But then part of the next generation will search again for a different look, making another counter culture statement. It’s a natural cycle.

Really great video, but I feel like you glossed over the section at the end where you talked about where all the hipsters are now. I feel like you should have gone a bit more in depth on that since you didn't give many examples besides film bro.

hipsters are literally everyone now. mainstream style is hipster-subdued. just like they are now.
style died after them. now everybody virtue signals and is super PC. its shit for those of us who thought they sucked.
a silver lining after their graduation to mainstream was that everyone tried to resurrect the 80s and then the 90s musically and then in fashion and aesthetic. i liked that. it was unpretentious and all about nostalgia. retrowave, synthwave? way better than the obnoxious hipster indie ever was.

hipsters are still here. Rather, instead of coffee and clothes to signal uniqueness, they use phrases like "depression", "anxiety", "trauma", "neurodivergence", etc.

I was once at a friend’s house and didn’t recognize a guest’s Che Guevara ring. Th wearer (a guy) explained it with the most contempt dripping voice. He wouldn’t even look me in the eye. He explained it while facing another direction and made sure to leave immediately. I was mortified, but then, why would you be such a jerk? Meanwhile, his dumbass is trying to sell hats, and I have a doctorate.

I never saw the death of the hipster coming it was sorta weird how we kinda forgot about it, I know it’s a controversial take but I always liked the stereotypical hipster fashion indie look, and the music that came with it, also I miss it because those days seemed more simple and interesting there was a lot more to talk about honestly these days have gotten so boring I always liked reading long complex articles about hipster culture also I’d say the hipster aesthetic and attitude we all know started in like 2003 and ended in 2016 similar to emo or scene style which started around the same time, great video maybe one day hipster will become mainstream again ? who knows.

    • @MrDapcat
      @MrDapcat  4 месяца назад +1

I’m sure the hipster aesthetic will come back around in another decade. Similar to how people now are dressing like the 90s and early 2000s there will be a time where kids will be wearing flannels and skinny jeans once again.

Personally some hipsters grew out of the phase or they became an elitist on the topic or subjects thier into.

Hipsters stole the terms nerd and geek and that's what they're calling themselves. At this point in time, real nerds and geeks are indifferent to this theft since the hipster geeks are into commercialized geek culture. That is part of why the "it's popular, now it sucks" hipster has vanished. The hipsters are into the popular, corporatized versions of things that were once niche and uncool in their "old school" forms. Many of today's hipster geeks are too young to remember a world prior to the Disney Borg collective assimilating Star Wars and Marvel. But it's unfortunately, all they know. The joke is on them, actually, as today, there is justification in lamenting that a lot of once niche things became worse after becoming popular. ComicCons have become bloated Pop Culture Cons revolving around celebrity photo ops and autograph hounds. Superhero films have become rinse and repeat formula while also spending too much time being political propaganda. Sci-Fi/Fantasy television is mostly popular due to the excessive injection of soap opera/political melodrama/sex/dysfunctional characters and promoting this over speculative fiction elements. The irony is that hipster geeks swallow all of this indiscrimiately because they follow a popular brand to demonstrate that they are in the geek/nerd club.

With any luck they won’t return, they’ll just become a footnote in history like the hippies and the horrible decade of that is the 1970s. I hate hipsters, hippies and I really hate disco.

The show Happy Endings did an episode on hipsters and it was fucking hilarious. When I was a teen in peak hipster movement *2011* I said something pretentious and my uncle looked me up and down said “Oh my god you’re a hipster” was like someone told me I was bit by a zombie 😩😭
