- Pop culture is on the decline.
The decline of pop culture started in the 2010's, and accelerated in the 2020's. This video looks at how pop culture started, why pop culture's dying, and speculates about the future of pop culture with AI.
Popular culture gained popularity as a concept in the 1800's, especially with the Industrial Revolution, and even further with TV and radio. But social media in the 2010's has lead to the decline of pop culture--and since the 2020's, the decline of pop culture has accelerated.
But what will happen to pop culture in the future? I predict it'll continue to decline with the rise of AI, but I guess we'll all have to see.

The industry was so use to having an old way that it has failed to adapt to the changing times, took it for granted even when new technology in the 00s showed how much things were gonna change. Both hollywood and the music industry are playing it safe, releasing less than amusing entertainment and trying desperately for it to pick up in the social media zeitgeist. If not, follow in the same ridiculous trends, not all movies need to be 2 hours now, evwrything doesn’t need to be remade, but they only seem to pump more out while viewers are fatigued by the over saturation. Music is far worse with albums on the decline and a bigger reliance on singles and ep’s, songs are shorter and there’s less songs in the catalog. Streaming is about what movies, music, and the internet relies on. Many “celebrities” to put it loose, are picked up by people of that individual style, heard behavior exists, but its polarized in these individual fandoms, but very VERY few break the mold and become a household name.
Paparazzi, magazines, celebrities news, i can go on, has been greatly diminished from its former influence. I dont know why i find that most important. People who are younger probably will never understand stories like britany, without living, hearing, and seeing her everywhere good and bad in the 00s. Gossip tabloids now have an out of date presence if the take up social media, people can get a picture of a celebrity just as easily as paparazzi, and any account can get popular off of a celebrity exposé. Britney Spears alone generated hundreds of millions of dollars for paparazzi, magazines, newspapers, and news, all just photographing and harassing a vulnerable and deeply disturbed person.

It’s almost as if profit has come so far before all else that there just isn’t much of a place in the mainstream for passion and pure raw talent large companies continue to back what is the safe option for them profit wise and are no longer taking any real risks to make anything actually fresh and interesting because that risk could so easily result in a loss. Essentially the shareholders of the largest and most powerful corporations are essentially wreaking havoc on the pop culture zeitgeist with their obsession of continuing to fill their already overflowing pockets.
Because I DON'T want to live in an echo chamber, I make a deliberate choice to follow people on social media with widely varying perspectives. The result is that I see a lot of stuff I agree with and a lot of stuff I don't from all sides and don't 100 percent agree with any side. I think that's helped me maintain my independence.
A possible symptom of it is most pop music sounding the same or very similar to what pop music sounded like a decade ago.
Really has to do with the decentralization of the music industry. It's hyper personalized and everyone gets their own corner. Honestly a win for music but a con for relating on a social level

Yeah it’s even possible that that has been a significant contributing factor to an increase in loneliness with young people in recent times.
Not just that, but also the fact that rock declined in popularity significantly. Back in my day, there used to be a variety in terms of the types of music you'd hear on the radio and on TV between pop, hip hop, and of course, rock. However, unfortunately, music has homogenized in recent years (probably around the early 2010s or so) and now all you hear in public are obnoxious robotically autotuned "songs" where there are literally no actual instruments being played whatsoever.

That sort of modern pop music also first appeared in the mid to late 1990s and it had mostly taken over radio stations by the mid 2000s. Hopefully that could change with a great soundtrack in a new modern video game that ends up being similarly successful to Minecraft.
i want to add that with the rise of self expression and identity, people tend to feel inclined to consume media that can contribute to their own niches and the community surrounding that specific niche, somewhat peer pressure-y idk. and because of the accessibility of pop culture, it makes one seem part of a system instead of having their own identity if that makes sense
I can see that actually. Especially since streaming services and apps like Spotify made it easier to find movies or music that appeals to your personal preferences. So there isn’t as much of a unified audience anymore.

Yeah if you were a child in the 1950's you'd watch what your parents did or what networks thought you wanted to watch. Now you can watch anything and at any time so if you don't like the mainstream you can just switch. No one will judge you because now you can find groups for you based on your niche interest.
I have a theory, could this be why the quality of content, not only in Hollywood but also in social media because social media sparked more pop culture if you think about it with RUclipsrs like the originals that started out before the 2010s and it was great for a while before more people came in because of monetization and because of how some minds think, they focus on children cause if you think about it, you can easily trick them. Worst of all some kids grew up with that shlock instead of the pop culture icons today and the problem is more that they don't understand the point of entertainment and as the amount of that generation grows (Specifically Gen Alpha now) the growth of culture declines. It's not necessarily their fault (It's more complicated than that) and it isn't the ultimate problem, what is, is that there are now companies who've stopped trying to make quality and play it safe and mainly focus on taking advantage of weak minds.
Do I think I'm right, no it's still a theory. At the end of the day, pop culture may be dying, but doesn't have to be.
This is something I’ve been thinking about recently with the “RUclipsr retirement trend” and I think it was a lot more wholesome in the old days when Hank Green was CEO of VidCon and everyone was just kinda doing it for the fun of it all. And when you watch RUclipsrs now that have been on the platform a lot longer you can compare their old content to their new and see how they had to optimize their content for monetization. It’s SERIOUS BUSINESS. It’s also interesting how just as quickly the “Parasocial” relationship with the vlogger arose it kinda faded. Since everything is short-form now, so many people don’t even know the names of the people they’re watching -hence they can’t get too invested in their lives. Maybe I’m just not on that side of RUclips anymore idk
But that’s just a theory. A pop culture theory!

rap music, punk rock, regular rock, believe it or not even jazz were all countercultural movements. then they were adopted. if pop culture goes counter culture goes too.
it's not pop culture that's dying, it's the concept of culture itself. you can see this when you look around at all of these people commenting on cultures that aren't theirs, that they don't understand, & they don't understand that they don't understand.
watch a lowrider car video there will he people in the comments saying things about "old piece of junk" "ruining the roads", or whatever other dumb shit. they don't understand that its not for them, they don't even really know what theyre looking at. everyone (young) thinks everything is for them.
older people know theres worlds outside of their own. when I see Mexicans listening to beep beep music & partying til 9am I don't scoff, I appreciate their culture from a distance, knowing im not meant to get it.

15:07 part of that is I think we as a society need to learn to engage with opposing viewpoints. Only reason the echo chambers happen is, yes, partially the algorithms, but also partially just because people never actually do engage with things they disagree with. They partially craft that box themselves.
Not only is confrontation intimidating, but so too is a simple debate with another who's views differ from yours.

Is it intimidating? A little. But if you never hear out the other side how do you know if your views even hold water?

I find it so hard to find people in real life that like the same traditional media as me because there are so many options out there that it is impossible to keep up. Which is why it’s so important to DISCUSS what you like with other people and try taking their recommendations. For example, one of my favorite shows is Succession and ik it’s one of the most popular shows atm, but I’ve only seen people discuss it online (ie. “Successiontok”). I’ve never once organically met a person who watched the show. It’s also wild how a movie like Wonka is for literally all demographics but people still go into with closed-minds because it’s a “safe-franchise, nostalgia bate” movie. These movies will be the only kind people will talk about, but they will collectively shit on them regardless cuz they’re “not original.” They show previews in theatres…go watch an original film.

1:58 you know I always thought it was the fact that I have autism that it seems like personal tastes just make it so hard to click with people... And while that's a factor I would think if we did have a more uniform pop culture maybe I could more easily connect with people.
Its not like the only things I get obsessed with are obscure. Its a lot of them, but I do tend to like things with *some* amount of popularity. TADC and Pal World are to recent examples.
But you just cant assume that nearly everyone is interested in whatever is popular anymore.
Great video. I think a major issue is that nowadays, "mono-culture" is much harder to spread. Like, these days I never really have a good grasp on what new movies even exist. There could be like a new Star Wars movie and I wouldn't even know about it. 15 years ago, I somehow always knew what popular movies were out, but nowadays I'm only vaguely aware. At first, I assumed this was simply a by-product of getting older. I was getting old and out of touch and just not paying attention. That's probably partially true. But where does one go to find out about "new shit"? It used to be TV commercials and movie trailers. But I don't watch TV. I watch RUclips. And I skip ads. So I never even know what's going on. (I know about NordVPN and Raid Shadow Legends though) And who the hell is Dua Lipa?

I don’t know if I’m just weird but I find this video very engaging so I hope the algorithm picks it up and spreads it. But maybe I’m just weird in liking it. 🤷♂️ At any rate your personality and presentation are comforting somehow.
I could see this being somewhat cyclical as technology allows for new forms of entertainment that only major corporations can produce at first. For example, if some company figured out how to do VR right and VR games suddenly became all the rage, that company and a few emerging competitors would have the ability to create games and know that they'd know a large segment of the population would be playing and people could easily find other people playing the same one they were. Of course, as the technology would eventually become more accessible, not only would more companies enter the market, but an indie development scene would eventually emerge and you'd end up with same fragmentation and niche marketing until the next big thing comes along.
There’s no action hero actors either, not a lot of new franchises that are American, people enjoy manga and anime now, tons of memes even get their start in Japan on Nico Nico and 2chan, pop culture seems more like meme culture… I mean how many people know who Hatsune Miku is now? Japans economy is hurting but the meme culture touhou started is thriving now

In that case I think it happened bc nowadays it seems like indie culture is getting more and more popular compared to pop culture, some people are starting to get so fed up of always seeing the same retro franchise get revived over and over in favor of consumerism

I think its a good thing to have more individual outlets for everyone. We are all very different with different tastes. My interests are all over the place. I find myself watching videos on things I probably never would have gotten into or discovered without the internet.
However part of me does think its a bit sad when there isnt really a big unifying thing in society. The individualism is probably also making people feel more seperated too over time. Also some individuals go a bit... ecentric.
But I dont see how theoretically reversing such a trend would be good. Is it good for people to all be of one boring mind with no creativity and interests? You can find lots of historical situations where everyone being a echo chamber of the same ideas seems to not really be a good thing overall. Especially in historically political situations. But what we have now does make us more divided.

Never was a fan of popular culture i much perfer personalized content like i enjoy sci-fi, horror, mystery, crime dramas, action, when it comes to tv and movies im not to picky when it comes to music just not a fan of new mainstream music mainstream music from 90s and down i enjoy but when it comes to new music im an underground guy, and when it comes to podcast its horror, comedy, documentary, but i dont listen to the pods from celebrities, books i dont know if there is popular culture for that or not dont see how there would be
Media companies are able to foster brands through less expensive mediums and increase their presence once proven viable. Ie inexpensive television, to film.

I don't necessarily think that's the case. Hipster culture can be viewed as a relative/precursor as far as structure is concerned, but I think it's more a fusion of fandom culture and algorithmic sorting/segmentation (with the two possibly entangled into a feedback loop) - rather than a deliberate or conscious effort to undermine/spite "mainstream" pop culture.

With how it’s segmented over 5 platforms (3 consoles, pc, and mobile) along with indie games being extremely popular in niche communities, gaming is far from a monolith. I would guess it’s closer to it than music tho

@@sebastianmontano9979in a way even the minecraft community is not monolithic, since it's such an open ended game. You have player types divided by combat, building, redstone engineering, and exploration. And to break it even further you have players that play single player, multi player, vanilla, modded, adventure maps, different versions, different gameplay philosophies...
TLDR; it may look monolithic because minecraft managed to become it's own ecosystem.
There is a unifying culture beyond the Entertainment Industry.
