Because we've been told all this time that acting/entertainment is a gift and if you're not born with it you are nothing. We are all realizing that there's nothing special about celebs... they are often more deeply flawed than the rest of us.
Not to mention that their educational level in most cases is questionable. Those people tend to leave school early if they have aver been there. Did I mention that exactly these people tell us how to live and die?
@@sputzelein I mean... celebs aren't going to solve our problems. Neither are rich people. Rich people are simply celebs that haven't tried to entertain me.
The pandemic was a factor. People were watching millionaires crying on social media about being quarantined in their mansions. Not a good look. Actors aren’t essential during a pandemic or any other time.
@OP &@@07Flash11MRC That's because it's not actors. It's celebrities; celebrity news hosts, celebrity leaders, celebrity corporates, and of course celebrity actors, singers , & artists. I'm an actor, among a number of other things. I've gotten just three gigs in my life. I am not a celebrity and thus am not rich beyond my needs. You also have no idea who I am, but I can guarantee that my solution to isolation during a raging pandemic isn't to put on a fashion show (credit: Rihanna's idea during an interview). I love the girl, she's a killer actor in every role she gets... but the disconnect... well, it is disappointing.
I have to agree. Watching a movie used to be something special when I was a kid. Now that I can scroll through a ton of them at any time at home, I feel like there's nothing extraordinary about anything about them anymore 😕
Exactly! We see how many are out of touch, nepo babies, or doing creepy stuff. Being a celebrity is not really obtainable for most pple so that makes us not interested in it too
@@ilikeyoutube7224 Exactly. I don't think people realized until recently just how many celebrities are nepo babies, which has made us look at Hollywood differently than before.
it's interesting to think that stars of the "Golden Age of Hollywood" were just acting 24/7, and their "true" personalities were just a facade forced upon them by the Great H (Hollywood). people like Marilyn Monroe & Judy Garland were just characters, and it's sad that we never got to know who they truly were.
Stars back then lived and worked in Hollywood. They had to dress well 24/7. If the studio caught a star not adhering to the dress code outside of the studio they docked her/his wages.
i dont believe for a minute they hated that, i dont pitty someone who gives up his real persona, sleeping hours for good money and being recognized, most of hollyweird pioneers where creeps and prostitutes, even circus people, imagine giving up circus lifestyles, prostitution and another questionable businesses for making movies and being respected
To quote the video, "Anthony Mackie is not a movie Star, the Falcon is." Well...yeah! Anthony Mackie isn't a very interesting person. He's a guy always doing the "Right Thing" for his Career. That's not interesting. Look at a guy like Arnold Schwartzeneggar, he's a fascinating person and that comes out in his OG performances. People picked up on his subtleties and, when they realized he was the real deal, they wanted to know more! The Movie Star isn't dead, people aren't interesting anymore. That's all. =\
@@thecrispymaster while true, entertainment and showbiz was put on a pedestal and elevated to a degree not a lot of other jobs were. All those high level scandals knocked them down a peg or two
@@DylanJo123 A peg or two sure but big and even moderate film fans do still admire talent for great acting or writing even thinking, or having previously thought, all the talent are great people in general.
It’s definitely lost it’s charm for sure, but social media influencers are also played out. I think people are over stimulated, media is too over saturated. There’s just too many options.
You are right, the truth is people really don’t care about celebrities personal life . The truth is we want the illusion, people like the dream and that’s why people like Beyoncé is successful .
We are more likely to go to a certain director’s movie than a star’s. A Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese movie is appealing because we expect quality. M. Night Shyamalan used to be a draw but the last few years have been disappointing. We feel like we know what to expect from a Tim Burton movie. Personally, I’m sick of IPs being run into the ground. A lesser known story in the hands of a proven director is what I look for.
I do like IPs or small ips like biopics of famous people. For example bohemian rhapsody was sort of an IP film. The sole idea of going to see a film about Queen drew a lot of people in, that film didn’t need a movie star to sell the same goes with Elvis. So yeah Biopics of Bands and singers are sort of ip films I like.
@gonzoyork1908 yes but biopics of really famous people or biopics about tech moguls like the social network. That film called everyone’s attention just because it was about the guy who created Facebook. I wonder if we’ll ever get a biopic on how whats app was created and a movie about Spotify. There is the Netflix series but I prefer movies I have no patience for tv series. It’s not tvs fault it’s mine. I’ve been able to finish very little amount of series they aren’t for me. So a film about What’s app, RUclips and Spotify I would so much appreciate them
That's where I land too. I'll go see a movie for its director or studio/distributor (I catch most A24 movies). Can't remember the last time I saw a movie primarily for an actor, maybe Step-Brothets for Will Ferrell. There are actors whose comedic sensibilities I'll show up for, but Hollywood doesn't do comedies anymore.
@@shipdit8421you're right about comedians. I saw Nobody because of bob odenkirk, and house party because I wanted to see a stupid movie and Andrew santino was on the poster. Also saw bros because I liked Billy eichners show
I’m 21 and chronically online, and I wouldn’t call Daisy Ridley a star or household name at all. I only know of her because my cousin is really into Star Wars.
Never heard of her. It doesn’t require talent to be in Star Wars. Look at Carrie Fisher . She was a brilliant writer but anyone could’ve done her role.
I loved Will Smith and watched all his movies before I knew anything about his life. Now I can’t stand to look at him. 🥴 Stars benefited from being mysterious.
The decentralization of media is allowing content creators to take up space that movie stars used to occupy. We aren’t bombarded with media telling us to love them
We also don't have the limitation of waiting to see who we want whenever they release a film, and being at the mercy of a movie of theirs coming out only once every few years, and that's the only time we get to see them. We have WAY more control over consuming our entertainment than ever, so it's not as special as it was, especially in the pre-TV days of Hollywood. It's just not that big a deal anymore.
Same with music too. You only saw music stars being pushed to the mainstream. You never saw them behind the scenes or anything. Just when a music video dropped or they were on MTV/BET/VH1 doing some interviews for their album drop.
you know what pisses me off the most? any even the least popular person dies and the second the news hits the world they suddenly have billions of fans dedicated to star's entire life and can't name one thing properly and everything dies and gets forgotten in few days
Your point re Margot Robbie pre-Barbie is reflected in costar Ryan Gosling post-Barbie. His film 'The Fall Guy' as a low draw showed: his mega-Ken power didn't draw the masses.
Yeah! It’s funny you say that. I was going to do a whole segment on barbenheimer and how two stars from each movie came together for The Fall Guy, and The Fall Guy flopped, but then… I didn’t put that in ahaha. Thank you for subbing! I’m glad you liked the video!
I think there is more to it than just that. I think its a bit deeper than just the fact that Ryan Gosling didn't manage to draw. I think its the more the fact that people are viewing films differently. Lots of people have a subscription with a streaming service. If you have Netflix and/or Prime there is a relatively high chance that these kinds of films will find their way onto those services sooner rather than later and you didn't pay anything more than just your subscription. Movie tickets have got expensive and unless you are a die-hard movie watcher, you aren't going to turn out for every film. Most of the movie going public in a lot of the places in the world have been hit with the inflation, plus Covid and the stupid strikes have also damaged the way things were pushed out. It used to be a conveyor belt that generated buzz. Now we kind of see stars in a different light, and its not always a good light. I rate both Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, but the Fall Guys is a remake of an old concept that last showed in the 1970s. There are reasons things die. Because they got old. Hollywood is too risk averse to try new things. It puts down too much dollar on trying to make billion dollar movies, and doesn't make sensible choices often enough. I don't think they can even make $50M dollar movies very well anymore. The heart isn't in it anymore. Margot Robbie. You have to know where she came from. And Most Americans don't. She came from an Australian Soap opera that was very popular in Britain. She already had market appeal before she got into the famous Hollywood roles. She was acid tested already. She had screen time that many young American actresses don't have. You find many "Neighbours" alumni in Hollywood including; Russel Crowe, Guy Pierce and more. Isla Fisher, who you may or may not know, was also acid tested in an Australian soap opera "Home and Away". She has added market appeal, because she was known before she got the bigger roles. One last thing. Marvel. It's a tried and tested formula. It relies on people knowing the comics. Therefore, by virtue, it's not original, not even remotely. The comic book creators did all the heavy lifting long before this was a thing. The studios don't do risks anymore. There's nothing new. I feel sorry for the Gen Z generation, you've got nothing new to enjoy. It's just rehashes of things that used to be successful. It's not really a celebration of your generation. The 80s and 90s had celebrations of its generations in film. It's not like that anymore. It's about the message these days.
I honestly feel like it’s theatrical releases. When he mentioned “name a recent non-Marvel Chris Evans” movie, I immediately a thought Gray Man on Netflix (ironically starring Ryan Gosling). That movie was a big hit on streaming (post-Avengers/pre-Barbie). Nobody wants to see an actor in a theatrical release that’s non-IP. Even The Rock can’t carry a movie (Black Adam flipped yet Hobbs and Shaw did well).
@@Malik_Maverickthere was that one where he had an intelligent daughter. I think it was called Gifted. Honestly, i stopped watching Netflix movies because usually all so painfully mid. Ngl, when you mentioned Leo being one of the very last traditional movie stars we have, i almost teared up. Im 36 and grew up on Leo movies so its wild to see Ai approaching and knowing its gonna change how we view cinema forever. Great deep dive bro!
I think soon people will get over them too. The more they get outed as scammers and more exposed videos drop, their number will drop. Kids will grow out of these streamers antics once they start adulting.
We see the ego of the actor now not just the persona. When who the audience believes someone to be doesn't match up the star appeal loses all of its effect.
Hey man, I’m not sure why the mystery RUclips algorithm put your video in front of me, but damn…I watched this whole thing. I hardly ever watch anything more than 5-10 minutes, but you sitting in the couch talking movie star history actually worked. You look tired. Putting this together probably took a lot of work, but I’m glad you did it. Your explanation of how Hollywood really doesn’t have any stars anymore answered the question my subconscious was only asking. There has just been this ever growing “ick” factor with today’s stars and movies and I thought it was just because I was turning into this grumpy old mam (which I am) but you’re tired old eyes kinda took some of the heat off me. So nice job stranger on the internet. I’ll be sure to check out your other vids. ❤
Many people don't go to a movie just because of the actor or actress anymore! Social Media killed the awards shows, since there is no need to watch them to see the stars anymore since they are on your phone! You should only trust reviews by people that you trust and has the same basic taste as you! John Carpenter made bad movies according to movie critics when they were released!
This was a fascinating and incredibly solid video. I've been watching the slow death of Hollywood and really think the entertainment landscape is going to change drastically in the next few years. Subscribed!
Its the same, Directors are sort of movie stars 2 many director that were powerhouses aren't bringing people to the theater. You can see Fall guy as and examples, the star from the Ken Movie and the director of John Wick? A flop
At first Reality TV considerably cheapened star status and then social media killed the mystique of the movie star. RUclipsrs, TikTokers and Instagram models etc... are more famous and influential than them. So, now people don't care much about movie stars.
Dude where the hell did u come from, im suprised i never heard of you before. Your video quality is not relected in your subscriber count. Hopefully that will change soon. Great job.

0:41- Was Mark Hamill a movie star? Was Carrie Fisher a movie star? To me, being a movie star is about playing a character that endears the actors to people. Star Wars was more about the overall story than one character. Han really stood out as a character more than the others, so I could see how Harrison Ford’s likability would carry over to Indiana Jones, and other movies.
I feel that as well. I think people are really stretching the definition. The vast majority of talented actors aren't movie stars in the same way that the vast majority of talented singers aren't Taylor Swift or Beyonce. I also feel like people also fixate way too much on what should or deserves to be popular. There's this weird inherent elitism to the whole thing that you'd think they oppose, the way they talk about modern Hollywood.
I'm 68, not willing to be left behind by progress. Your post is superbly revealing! - e.g. summary of film-star evolution; great examples of Emma C, Mr Beast and Dolly Parton. I subscribed. Thank you.
A hundred years ago touring actors and athletes were one step above a bum; restaurants and hotels were not big on them as they tended to skip the check and cause trouble.
Cruise, Denzel, Pitt, Clooney, Stallone, Keanu, Dicaprio, Jolie and Dwayne are the only ones I can think of that are still currently active where if they headlined a non-IP studio picture could still draw a massive opening weekend.
@thetalentof I don't think Clooney could - he's been in a few stinkers recently, plus he recently admitted he was a commie (democrat), so he's lost 50% of his audience right there. Same goes with Dwayne, people realized he was a shallow, empty, walking advertisement, so it seems he has lost half his audience too. Jolie? Nah. It's only really Cruise, Denzel, Pitt and Dicaprio left standing. I don't think anything would get me to go to the cinema anymore. I was thinking about this yesterday, and I was trying to think about why people don't go to the cinema anymore. I was trying to think of why I stopped going. I came to the surprising realization that nothing will get me to go back to the movies - I did a little thought experiment where it got to the point that even if someone gave me free tickets to go and watch any movie currently out...I wouldn't go! I have no idea why I've fallen so out of love with the place - but it's not just me feeling like this, it seems a majority of people are like this now. It just seems like so much effort to get my arse to the movies. I prefer to just stay indoors and watch TV if I have to. Saying that, I don't even watch TV anymore. I think I'm just over Hollywood.
It was the voice that made a movie star. Hollywood have forgotten that the actor's voice is the big pull. They now use actors with common voices. One reason they have flops.
I dont even get that. If anything her music has gotten worse. Haven't liked anything since 2012. And her constantly trying to involve herself in politics when it's clear she's just not informed just completely turns me away
She obviously deserves every bit of it. She's stayed on top for almost 20 years for a reason. Unbelievable amount of hits. She treats her fans and her employees very well. Gives a ton to charity. Always classy and kind in interviews. She trains like an Olympic athlete to give her fans these huge shows. And still finds time to write a diverse range of albums that always go #1 and are critically appreciated, as well. She's one in a billion. If she doesn't deserve it, then no one does.
@@poppyspoping3979 because she throws her opinions out like she knows what she's talking about when she clearly doesn't have a clue how average normal people live. Plus she's only popular with teen age girls and gay dudes. Plus despite her success, she has very little talent or intelligence.
I can't think of any "movie stars" from this century. It's more let's go see the new Batman and see if whomever is cast in it does the character justice.
Linda Eder is the best living singer on the planet yet she’s not a huge star known by all. She orchestrated that controlling media attention to have a normal life, appearing in solo appearances on her tour. She will normally do 30-35 appearances a year, just enough to live comfortably.she hates the star machine. She sold out Carnegie Hall in under an hour. Those that hear her once are instant fans. She actually is better in person than any studio recording. Breath taking talent. I’ve seen her 7 times and she was fabulous each time with my jaw dropped and my heart soaring. She didn’t want to be a “ star” a reluctant Diva. Probably the most humble singer of all time. Her fans chase her , she doesn’t chase her fans. She loves her fans no doubt but sees herself as a regular normal person and something tells me that she isn’t as impressed with herself as her fans are.
Great video! I think it is wild that studios care so much about how many followers an actor has before casting them because I do not follow any celebrities on social media and most of my friends don't either. I care more about the performances than anything they post.
The fact is it was better for both movie stars and fans when they were largely mysterious personas that lived mostly as fantasy within the individual minds of the public. As just like the old saying goes, You never want to meet your heroes because the reality tends to be a crushing let down compared to your idealized concept of who they are and what they were probably like in person. Because most of them payed a great deal of money to create and cultivate a very artificial version of who they are. Right down to the plastic surgery, hair dye and make up (both women and men tend to wear) in public and for photo shoots. Unfortunately most of the time These people, while no doubt are just regular people like anyone else, are also seen and treated as brands moreso than human beings ( which is kind of sad). So they are surrounded by handlers and assistants and publicists etc who keep them separate from everyday life. Causing a very serious issue of detachment which only grows worse and more extreme over time, especially if they continue to grow in popularity and bankability. Those with vested interests at stake go to greater degrees to keep them in a guilded cage like real life human show ponies, which often translates to "Do whatever, agree with or say whatever makes them happy and compliant. Whatever they want or need get it for them. Whatever they complain about agree with them so as to calm them down as quickly as possible." Sometimes that means giving them drugs or whatever other vices they turn to in order to deal with the often immense pressure that might be hanging over them. It is a very self indulgent, co dependent, sick environment. And the people at the center...well let's just say that only a fraction of people on Earth, those who likely had a solid foundation of support.. possibly rooted in family and most often some type of faith or spiritual center, are capable of enduring such situations for long term and not wind up deeply corrupted or twisted by it. For one thing they are paid ridiculous amounts of money for doing things that don't really balance out to justify such obscene amounts of money. Which means most of the people around them likewise make money directly or indirectly as a result of their level of fame and success. So it is in their own interests to keep the machine going. Or those people survive off the scraps thrown at them. So it becomes nearly impossible to tell who is genuinely a sincere friend or just another leech trying to get something from them or make money as a result of something they do or can get them to agree to do. Which is a horrible situation in itself. Next, the money and constant noteriaty will inevitably go straight to their head and unless they have that grounded support system and people who will be real with and check them, it begins to distort reality. Add to that the army of sycophants they become surrounded by trying to"always keep them happy", again.. without those real people and support system, to Keep them grounded, they begin to have a very distorted view of themselves and often begin to believe the hype written about them... they believe the fantasy. So they develop a Pathologically bloated belief in their importance and brilliance. Whereas they no longer allow themselves to acknowledge their flaws or failures... because in their twisted minds they are above all that. "Otherwise why else would so many people love them, and why would they be so successful, and why would everyone always tell them they are right and it's the other people who are in the wrong?" In other words they fully become committed to the fantasy ideal of themselves and refuse to see the flawed reality. Sometimes to the point they begin to loose touch with and have psychotic breaks with reality. Especially where heavy substance abuse is involved because that only suppresses other emotions and fears which build up like a pressurized line until it bursts. Which we have all seen situations where celebrities loose their shit and it is deeply sad and often has tragic outcomes. The thing is most people who dream about fame are already the type to rely too much on the opinions of others or are insecure or narcissistic (who themselves tend to be the most insecure of all) to begin with. But really this can happen to ANYONE. Again it is only a tiny number of people who have the psychological, spiritual, emotional strength to withstand that. And probably nobody in the world who can manage to do it alone. It takes a strength that is the rarest of all in people. A kind that mostly must be learned and maybe 1 out of a billion might be born with a natural propensity for it. Even still these folks all tend to share something in common... they don't linger in that environment for long periods of time. They do whatever needs doing and then get as far from it as possible until the next thing then do it all over again.
Good points. However, i do not think all or perhaps even most narcissists are insecure. I have 2 close family members I strongly suspect of having full-blown NPD, and I'm pretty sure they think they are absolutely fantastic. They act at humble or even self-hating, but if you watch them long enough you start to think 'yeah I'm pretty sure only someone who thinks they are a superior lifeform would do/say that'. Thats my experience.
You missed the big elephant in the room the social media clips of these actors where they attack fans or people not of their believes has destroyed the alleged movie star ie Rachel zegler, Jack black, Robert deniro
These peoples detachment from real life has made these actors look foolish and pathetic. The more they speak publicly highlights these actors shortcomings in life.
If we’re thinking about movie stars that have come through in the 2010s, I do think Jennifer Lawrence is a bona fide movie star. Aside from the 7 sequels she has made there are 6 other films on her resume that have exceeded $100m, most of them very much built around her. Her 2012-2018 run from a commercial perspective is very impressive, and JLaws 2012 was probably the last time there was a true stratospheric launch of a movie star in the traditional sense. (Hunger Games and Silver Linings).
I agree with your overall point about celebrities, but the Daisy Ridley example is probably one of the worst possible examples to use to prove the point. The same exact phenomenon happened with Mark Hamill in the 1980s. He was propelled to superstardom by the original Star Wars in the 70s/80s, then after Return of the Jedi, his career consisted of more obscure roles and voice acting. His film roles were relatively obscure and nowhere near the success of Star Wars. Star Wars and type-casting and all that is just a special case and even that is unpredictable, since the complete opposite happened to Harrison Ford.
I wouldn't call him the greatest movie star of all time though. What about Clark Gable, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Buster Keaton, or Rudolph Valentino?
Bollywood still has its fair share of movie stars. The Khans are still a major draw but they are getting older and they can only do so much for longer. It seems that the younger stars seem to have a rather polarizing reputation(nepotism most likely). I wonder if culture of movie stars in general is dying out.
I had to google the english titles cause here in Brazil that cn change. But from my memory Chris Evans movies -Fantastic Four -Nanny Diaries -Heroes -Sott Pilgrim -Knives Out -What's Your Number? -Not Another teen movie And to be honest I only decided to watch Captain America BECAUSE Chris Evans was playing that role. I grew up with X-men movies when it comes to Marvel properties, AND the justice league animated series when it comes to superheroes in general. I didn't even know the Avengers existed before Chris Evans playing Rogers. I still haven't watched the first Iron Man movie. I probably never will
As someone who has been in this business almost 25 years, I could categorically agree with you. Whenever actor mentions Stard, all I tell them is that their careers, a marathons, they want to be working when they’re ready, and name recognition will only matter mostly to a certain level of fans and the people who have the power to give you the roles.

Thumbs up! You got kind of a weird scratchy voice, but I can tell you've embraced it. I subscribed and, believe or not (because it surprised me), I watched the whole video. "Big Jake" was my favorite movie when I was in K-4 elementary. I even liked John Wayne's more dramatic roles, too, though they did happen less since he'd developed his name as a "tough guy." John Wayne Toilet Paper! Rough, tough, and don't take shit off nobody! And, on a side note, I like Taylor L. He was hilarious in Grownups 2. And I like Evans in the small independent film "London" with Jason Statham and Jessica Biel. Ghosted was pretty good, too. I liked Lawrence in Winter's Bone, and that movie she played a Russian ballerina (she had a decent nude scene), and the Silver Linings Playbook. And I did like Maleficient, but I loved Fanning in Anywhere but Here, with Peter Dinklage. It's a sad, slow, cold, post-covid world that wiped out most of humanity... you know what? Look it up if you wanna see her in something else. Because you're talking about Beyonce right now: no, she is not awesome. She knows full well that a lot people who work in the factory that produces the products that she sells, work in appalling conditions, sometimes with minors. So, no, she is not awesome! She's not even that pretty. I've seen her leaked sex tapes when she's not wearing makeup. She has nothing to crow about beyond her nice breasts. I enjoyed this well-made video and all the included clips from old and slightly recent movies. I even found myself enjoying your more dry moments... my grandmother was England, so I like dry wit.
One of my favorite movies is READY PLAYER ONE. I know Steven Spielberg directed it, but cannot name you any actor or actress in it. I tnink really, the director is now the biggest star of any moive. We go to see there films. Part of the problem today I think is social media. Many of them go on twitter, or X and the like, and put out there opinions. In amy way, it sort of alienates people as well. the late reandolph Scott I tnink ikind of predicted this. even back then, he felt that too many people in the acting profession were giving interviews, and trying to show who they are. Also people see that many of these actors and acrtresses while talented are there because of family ties. THE FONDA'S, the SHEENS , the SUTHERLANDS,, ande even the COPPOLA'S, Nicholas Cage JOHN VOIGHT, anyone. People cannot relate to many of these people/ they often portray themselves as somehow superior to the rest of us.

But I was so glad to be in the theater seeing READY PLAYER ONE.
Steven Spielberg is a thing of the past too! I loved his Radiers film but ya know his directing is full of tropes expected spielberg tropes, he should have gotten out of the way decades ago! there are old once young filmmakers who follow his star but no body knows them because of the overcasting effecting shadow of spielberg....crazy..... who knows their work ...few... director being the star when out with the 90s all of them need to go back in the dark were they belong!!!
As the audience we like the characters we don’t care to hear what the actor thinks or what they like and specially we don’t care what they think about politics.
I think the 1960s through ~2000s was this period where there was a "transitional form" that merged IP with movie stars. The best example is probably Captain Kirk played by William Shatner in the 1960s. The audience draw was mostly the IP, that is, Captain Kirk as a character. But the idea of anyone other than William Shatner playing Captain Kirk seemed outrageous (at least until he was actually recast in 2009). So for a while, the movie star AND the IP held sway over the audience. As time went on, and as even legendary characters like Captain Kirk were eventually recast, the sway of the movie star lessened and lessened. But still, even today, the movie star holds SOME sway over the IP. Like, when they recast Han Solo, it was considered controversial and generated backlash.
Great video! There's only 2 older stars holding on for dear life, who can still sell a movie on name value alone, in terms of what people want nowdays out of a star. The average Joe want's to look at a poster and say this actor will guarantee me a good if not great movie and they want to support the guy that they've been building a relationship of mutual respect with over decades. The actors still obey the same rules as decades before, they can't do too many stinkers in a row and all is forgiven and they have to remain beloved by the public without any bad pr. Keanu as the biggest appeal Q rating for sure followed by Tom Cruise even with his religious affiliations. Next... At best Leo, Denzel, Brad, Russell but i'm not sure about those guys to drive a major blockbuster selling job in a poster. Honestly i can't name one more, I wouldn't put Robert Downey Jr or Chris Hemsworth alone on that list even if they are beloved and have some name value. Rock lost it over time it seems. We're seeing the last days of the movie stars. Remember the days of Arnie, Sly, Mel, Bruce, Eddie and more, you were guaranteed to see a great movie if you saw those faces and name on a poster, for decades. Hell a director's name had value on a poster then, Carpenter, Spielberg, Craven, Cameron, Verhoeven I could go on and on. I can only think of Villeneuve and Nolan now...😢
Good video, the research you did is very much appreciated. I personally think this is largely a matter of charisma finding different avenues to reach people; simply put, charismatic entertainers used to gravitate to the movies, it was the best way to reach millions of people. If you look at the most successful RUclipsrs and streamers of today - they way their charisma drives their following, the way their fans have become ludicrous in their unyielding support - it's the same idol culture, just in a different medium
to be a movie star you need to be in good movies, and care about your public image, if you go after your next paycheck instead of pursuing art, you become forgettable
Yes, that's why celebrities that people genuinely like are just chill and don't involve themselves in unnecessary controversy. People like Henry Caville or Keanu Reeves.
I stopped caring about movie stars when they started preaching and telling us how to think on the award shows. They don't even like half of their fans. Why should i give them my money.
Yes but, most people bow expect them to or they want to cancel them.. like what is happening to blake lively now for starring in a mediocre movie, people expect her to be the face of dv
@@ebinrock From a technical argument, yeah, it was also the introduction of CinemaScope or VistaVision or any other aspect ratio projected to the screen that you couldn't get at home (until around the 90s and later).
What I think it's interesting it's that the movie star phenomenon may not really be a thing in the west anymore, but it is more relevant than ever in Asia. Some actors, specially korean, have massive fanbases than will watch anything they star in
I personally watch movies for their stories or visuals, I don't care who portrays the main characters. Unless there is a sequel, they should stay with the same actor (of course If that actor dies or has some other accidents, they should recast him).
The only way to resurrect the concept of the "movie star," and to recapture the love of the general public, is to follow the example set by the first ever movie star, Florence Lawrence. Studios need to make sure that their movie stars have a first and last name that *rhyme.* So, Marvel actor Anthony Mackie needs to be 'Anthony Manthony,' Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley should become 'Daisy Raysey,' and Will Smith needs to change his name to 'Will Smill.' And it even works for actors who have the same first name - like Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pine - who would all become known as Chris Eviss, Chris Priss, Chris Hiss, and Chris Piss. It worked back in 1910, and it can work again today!
What you said is true but not the whole picture. Studios made a decision to "kill" the movie star because it's cheaper for a movie to be promoted by IP you already own than an actor you have to pay a lot. It was not just some random thing that happened. There are actors that could be movie stars even in social climate of today, but there is no support from studios to promote them into it, quite the contrary. They try to shut most of them down unless they play the new game that is the second thing> In social media era studios now expect actors to be influencers, and mostly political influencers. So, in theory they would promote an actor into a movie star if he would be successful promoter of political agenda. And that thing can never work because it alienates at least half of the audience that is not in line with political agenda. They tried it dozens of times already and it ends up always in memes and people hating those actors. And the last thing why there are no more stars anymore, most actors lack charisma and are just not that good actors to impose themselves so people would watch a movie just for their performance.
Because we've been told all this time that acting/entertainment is a gift and if you're not born with it you are nothing. We are all realizing that there's nothing special about celebs... they are often more deeply flawed than the rest of us.

@shipdit8421 probably the Mission Impossible movies for me because of Tom Cruise

I agree. I think social media really broke the illusion of a lot of these celebrities
and they also benefitted from just being normal, regular guys.

It’s worse now. People idolize social media “influencers” and RUclips personalities. Yuck.
That bubble will burst. So many influences getting exposed recently that it's only a matter of time before people stop caring.
I thought Harley Quinn was what catapulted Margot to superstardom not Barbie.
I thought it was Wolf of Wall St.

Cruise, Denzel, Pitt, Clooney, Stallone, Keanu, Dicaprio, Jolie and Dwayne are the only ones I can think of that are still currently active where if they headlined a non-IP studio picture could still draw a massive opening weekend.
It really depends on the IP
"Otherwise why else would so many people love them, and why would they be so successful, and why would everyone always tell them they are right and it's the other people who are in the wrong?"
In other words they fully become committed to the fantasy ideal of themselves and refuse to see the flawed reality.
Social media killed movie stars
Very informative and engaging video. We're seeing a RUclips starmin the rise
You missed the big elephant in the room the social media clips of these actors where they attack fans or people not of their believes has destroyed the alleged movie star ie Rachel zegler, Jack black, Robert deniro
Definitely!
These peoples detachment from real life has made these actors look foolish and pathetic.
The more they speak publicly highlights these actors shortcomings in life.
you should look at the Kdrama film industry, would be an interesting step for your vibe.
I thought The Passengers was pretty good. Not amazing, but enjoyable.
Why is this an hour , i feel like this couldve been a paragraph
I really enjoyed this. You did a great job and you have a fantastic personality and sense of humor.
I still will watch Chris Evans in 1, Not Another Teen Movie. 2 Gifted. 3 knives out. 4 Sunshine. 5 The Losers.
The Losers is underrated. Such a fun film!
Anthony Mackie was never a movie star. Denzel was.
Made a whole video without the mention of the greatest moviestar of all time globally. Tom Cruise
The man, the myth, the legend
I wouldn't call him the greatest movie star of all time though. What about Clark Gable, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Buster Keaton, or Rudolph Valentino?
@@josebro352 They are movie stars but none of them have been big as Tom Cruise. Ever.
Bollywood still has its fair share of movie stars. The Khans are still a major draw but they are getting older and they can only do so much for longer. It seems that the younger stars seem to have a rather polarizing reputation(nepotism most likely). I wonder if culture of movie stars in general is dying out.
Rock Hudson bloopers from Pillow Talk are fantastic. He seemed like a really lovely guy ❤
Great video... entertaining and very informative. You must have done a heck of a lot of research on this!
Now, to check out your Star Wars video!
Anthony Mackie’s parents have a really good marriage
I had to google the english titles cause here in Brazil that cn change.
But from my memory Chris Evans movies
-Fantastic Four
-Nanny Diaries
-Heroes
-Sott Pilgrim
-Knives Out
-What's Your Number?
-Not Another teen movie
And to be honest I only decided to watch Captain America BECAUSE Chris Evans was playing that role. I grew up with X-men movies when it comes to Marvel properties, AND the justice league animated series when it comes to superheroes in general. I didn't even know the Avengers existed before Chris Evans playing Rogers. I still haven't watched the first Iron Man movie. I probably never will
Heroes? You talking about the movie Push?
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp Ok, fine I didn't look all the original titlea kkkkkkkkkk but yes, that's the one

And now look what happened to Mr Beast …..
You did a really great documentary. That's what it felt like, a documentary and i say that in a good way. You made a topic i otherwise would had past, interesting to watch. And yes, i watched it to the very end.
They really need to stop declaring their hatred for their fans publicly. After a while, we start to feel the same way about them.
Damn right ya dig
Thanks for this video! So interesting, also def subscribed, hope to see more of you! There is a lot that can be said. One thing is, cna the girlies stop obsessing over Timothee? He's in everything and even fake movies like *points at Harry Potter Marauders fandom*

I even found myself enjoying your more dry moments... my grandmother was England, so I like dry wit.
thank you for putting out such informative video

I can only think of Villeneuve and Nolan now...😢
Very very interesting and well told
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video!
From Florence Lawrence to Jennifer Lawrence.
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lpDon't forget the most chill, low profile, and humbled actor of all time. Daniel Day-Lewis.
To get people back into the movie theatres in the 1950s, they started to introduce sex in films. Something that TV wasn't allowed to.
And here I thought it was the widescreen LOL
@@ebinrock From a technical argument, yeah, it was also the introduction of CinemaScope or VistaVision or any other aspect ratio projected to the screen that you couldn't get at home (until around the 90s and later).
That was good and informative.
Studios need to make sure that their movie stars have a first and last name that *rhyme.* So, Marvel actor Anthony Mackie needs to be 'Anthony Manthony,' Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley should become 'Daisy Raysey,' and Will Smith needs to change his name to 'Will Smill.'
And it even works for actors who have the same first name - like Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pine - who would all become known as Chris Eviss, Chris Priss, Chris Hiss, and Chris Piss.
It worked back in 1910, and it can work again today!
Not necesarily. 1910 was definitely a different world than 2024.
Excellent work, very enlightening. Thank you
What is fame worth when any fool can be known all around the world for pulling a stupid stunt or whatever?
What you said is true but not the whole picture. Studios made a decision to "kill" the movie star because it's cheaper for a movie to be promoted by IP you already own than an actor you have to pay a lot. It was not just some random thing that happened. There are actors that could be movie stars even in social climate of today, but there is no support from studios to promote them into it, quite the contrary. They try to shut most of them down unless they play the new game that is the second thing>
In social media era studios now expect actors to be influencers, and mostly political influencers.
"It's no longer 1937" Best use of that video. Sandra Dee was the last movie star under contract to a studio.
