Most of these sub-cultures (including punk rock) start with the well-off art students. We make fun of them for their hypocrisy and naïve idealism, but at least they make an impact on culture. They're dreams of changing the world get crushed, many end up selling out to big corporations, and many people die or get addicted to drugs, but great art is made, culture changes for the better, and billions of unforgettable romantic experiences take places all over the world.

Ok as a hippie (I don’t even go as a hippie in public because lots of fake hippies have made it embarsssing to do so) these tiktok hippies should NOT be calling themselves hippies. They most likely get their clothes from SHEIN, judge everyone they see, start fights on twitter, and do everything that a real hippie would NOT do. Now I understand that nobody has perfect behaviors but this is just outrageous. They’re uneducated as well.
This is coming from someone who literally grew up in a lower middle class family, too. All my clothes are hand me downs and I have to make my own clothes and sew my clothes so they can fit me. I really apologize to everyone in this video who has met posers who act like this, I really am sorry :/

being an actual hippie, i mean really believing in love and respect and peace above all is something beautiful.
but i’ve met very few people claiming to be hippies that are actually like that. most only look the part. but they’re quick to judge you, especially if you don’t look like them.
most of them use being a “hippie” as a poor excuse to indulge in hedonistic, animalistic behaviour. get irresponsibly high, fuck people anywhere anytime, anything they wanna do and makes you immensely uncomfortable they get a “pass” to carry out.
i’ve been to one hippie festival like this… never. again.

Hmm.. as someone who considers myself a "hippie" in some ways, I grew up with people who caused me to also see hippies under a different definition. Though looking back, a lot of them were very financially well off, which I'm not by any means. I associate hippies not necessarily with drugs but most importantly with social justice and non violent, but pressuring, protest in which people may get arrested but will not stop advocating for positive change. The civil rights movement led by Americans with disabilities, which eventually led to the passing of the 504 bill and of the Americans with Disabilities Act, is something that I always think about when I hear the word "hippie." (There's a movie called 'Crip Camp' that makes this connection and is very informative; I seriously recommend it.)
There's people out there who will participate in the idea and the glamour of an idealistic style of living, but won't stick through with persisting for change. A lot of people can just go home to their middle class houses without much worry... so I think that your ultimate values and goals are really important. There's no point in making flower crowns if we're not going to continue fighting and standing up for a more peaceful future. Of course, it's very hard to get people to think like that when we tend to be scared of backlash when there is a sustained effort to go against current affairs. So many people tend to dabble in the idea of hippie culture as a result of that, I think.

I fully get the hate/disdain towards hippies, self-proclaimed hippies, and modern-day "hippies' but from reading a lot of comments here and on the other video, he's done about the hippie subculture as a whole, I've come to realize that most people don't know what a hippie truly is or the other types of hippies that were around at the time and that continue to be around now, aside from the very good points made in this video, it mainly covers two types of "hippies" the old/new Dirty Hippies, who truly don't contribute to any aspect of society on any level in any positive way, and Commercialized Hippies of old and new, almost no mention of genuine and honest intelligent people who wanted genuine change in non pretentious and progressive ways, anything from the way we treat one another, to having civil arguments and wanting any real change/reform against corruption in all forms of government, and the treatment of one another as human beings. The world is a wild place, and I really don't want to come off as preachy, I just want to put my honest views out there for anyone to have constructive conversation in a civil and peaceful manner, or at least as close as I can on the internet of all places. ✌️

To be fair thats how it's been for awhile now. For example 'Grunge' musicians and bands have gone and labeled Grunge as more of a marketing thing. But atleast back then it seemed that people were mimicking a lifestyle, now they're just mimicking the fashion knowing that they aren't really apart of the culture. But then again, both have always been done. Like unless we're talking about tribes then there's always been generations looking for identities in facades of identities.

It's a lot easier to do than people assume but because governments don't want us living for free it is deemed as homelessness when it is just human nature. Frank Zappa’s album We’re Only in It For the Money was basically one giant shitpost that made fun of the hippie movement back in 1968 and ironically sold well because hippies were that tone deaf, it brings up a lot of the criticisms you state in this video

I’ve heard it before it’s funny. Though honestly I don’t care much about Frank Zappa because when every album is like that it begins to feel like he’s just seething. I’ll say he’s ahead of the curve having to hide everything behind layers of irony like gen z

i feel like a lot of bad has happened, but you can honestly say that about any group. as an aspiring hippie, nothing in this video sounds like anything i plan to accomplish in few years time. all i seek to do, is live on a compound with friends and loved ones, create a self-sufficient lifestyle (homesteading, farming, etc), and place where i know people are welcome and safe. free to be who they want, granted no ones toes are getting stepped on on that process. doesn't sound like the stinky hippies you described in your video mate

Wow, that was absurdly cynical and one-sided. Hate to be in your head Coolea. While the hypocrisy and failures of the counter-culture are obvious and myriad, they also gave us fantastic music (Beatles, Hendrix, Dylan, Pink Floyd, and many more), helped end the Vietnam War, promulgated the environmental movement, civil right movement, and more equal rights for women, the pursuit of ancient wisdom from Eastern Traditions (like meditation) and some very fine psychedelics( whose benefits are being reexamined), great literature and art, and a global perspective (much needed today). Yes, more showers would have helped, (as you repeatedly mention, ha ha) as would a greater consistency with higher values. On the whole, the sixties were a hot mess, but also a glorious experiment in alternative approaches to mainstream society, many of which continue to resonate, and are still needed in our world today. Or we could just stick with shitty modern music, political apathy, ecological collapse, military aggression, and mundane conformity. And cynicism and nihilism, like you seem to promote.

A nice hippie isn't a hippie but rather an emo punk who's come full circle and learned to love themselves. A good hippie is an excellent punk, never showers, never shows respect for anyone or anything, abuses drugs, and actively engages is nihilsm through substance abuse.

Hippies, beatniks' hipsters all were branches from bohemianism, a lifestyle that came about when Romani gypsies were camping in the poor part of France in the late 1800s. Poets, Stage actors, artists and singers all shared rooms etc. in that part of town and watched how the gypsies had a love for life and each other, laughing, happy, yet took no interest in the pillars of the communities, religious leaders, not even the laws, they had their own. They lived to a beat of their own drum. These people adopted this same lifestyle and applied to their passions, artists quit worrying what art institutions demanded them to paint and how, poets freed themselves and wrote as they pleased, and actors played parts that were considered indecent. They called it Bohemianism because the gypsies had come from Bohemia. It gave birth to things like Art Nouveau, Klimp and Mucha lived it, Art Deco and changed the course of poetry, acting and the arts as a whole. Beat Niks, Hipsters then Hippies all were branches from the ideology of that lifestyle. Problem with the hippies right away was drugs. The whole idea of peace and love is of good nature, we all like that. But when they read Native Americans used Peyote and other mind-altering things for spiritual contact, they decided to use LSD, weed, and other things to experiment the same contact. Back then, doctors were in argument how these drugs would affect them, and much of the argument was because a lot of younger doctors were using them to. Truth is, by the Summer of Love, it was not really about love and peace, it was about partying, sex, drugs and rock and roll. They were not a group of revolutionists trying to make a better world, they were a bunch of addicts trying to blame anybody and everything on their addictions. Most were average white middle to upper middleclass liberal college kids. They hated conventional American lifestyle and religion yet took handouts from churches and community centers because most blew their money on drugs rather than food. They despised the government, yet many went to free health clinics to be treated for ODs, VD, lice and crabs. The whole hippy facade was made by hippies, like it was a big important help to the culture. We always said it started with peace and love, it ended with the Manson family. Those that didn't OD or just burn out, became capitalist they hated so much. Of course, that's because they grew up and got back to reality. The only thing hippies actually accomplished was to start a drug culture that has and still is destroying America today. Almost all violent crimes, broken homes, single mother's parentless children, mental illness, and the list goes on is due to drugs. Now we have BOHO wannabes that love to dress in extremely too expensive costumes trying hard to look like then, making some capitalist clothing line rich. The real hippy is a myth, it was another liberal idea that did not work. Bohemianism is a life of freedom of self-expression, hippies lived in a freedom of self-indulgence, huge difference between the two. A person of true passion must be left alone to express that. However, if you feel you need drugs of any type to do that, you are dealing with insecurity and are emotionally unstable. If you want to argue that be careful, the first sign of addiction is to defend the drugs and why you use them.....

You obviously dont understand what it was really about.Same with your understanding of psychedelics.LSD-25 is a life changing medicine/experience not a drug and being a hippie isnt at all about doing drugs n being lazy necessarily.Being a hippie is about being the best version of yourself, helping others, keeping good vibes, and being in touch with nature/your surroundings.acid jsnt all about the visuals n frying out its a tool that can be used to completely destroy n rebuild your ego.N if you get actual lsd-25(most tabs have fake or dirty ass lsd on em nowadays. You used to be able to buy 10 sheets for 50 bucks of pure fluff lmao) you will literally almost always have an amazing life changing dream like experience that helps unearth/or heal past issues or trauma.being a hippy has changed my life and so has lsd. Before i was antisocial, awkward and j didnt understsnd things like j enjoying being outside n esting food everyday. Now i feel like im on my way to becoming the best version of myself n really making something happen.not to mention my relationships with people!!Dont blindly hate because you live an npc wagecuck ass life n are too scared to let go n open your mind ...

Its because they were just living in originality not socially constructed protocol that strives to put people in boxes and categories.
