Steve Perry is not like others, he sings his heart out in every song, his presence and charisma are on another level. He expresses his voice through his body, his movements with his shoulders, arms, fingers like conducts him, even his beautiful hair has emotions in the right way whatever he sings 🕺🏻❤
The guitarist is a pastor at my wife's church. Lincoln Brewster is his name. He has quite the story and is a very, very good guitarist. The track is awesome. The album is all killer, no filler...!!! Thanks for posting...!!!
Thanks to Velizar (Vel_0000) who merged the full video for us! And here's an extract from an interview published in 1993 in the final Journey Force (official Journey fan club) newsletter, in which Steve Perry relates his encounter with Lincoln: "Lora Beard: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_ Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. _Randy is now the main West Coast cheese for Sony Music. He knew I had been looking for a guitar player for a long time. There were so many people in this town that could play a lot of chops but they really had no feel. The more I looked, the more disappointing it felt. There wasn't a whole lot of heart in their playing. Randy called and said he was given this tape a kid had made in his home studio. The songs were unfinished, but they stood on their own; they were so pretty. I was standing here in this room listening to the tape and I could feel that there was something behind his playing. There was soul there. I called him and we talked for a long time. He was living at home with his mom at the time._ Lora: _He must have had a major freak out when you called him out of the blue._ Steve: * laughs * _Yeah, I guess. I don't think about things like that sometimes. Anyway, he came to Los Angeles and that was the beginning of me, Paul_ [Taylor, Winger's keyboardist/guitarist] _and Lincoln hanging out and jamming._ [...] _Paul, Linc and I were at a rehearsal place here in Los Angeles and we were just jamming and having a lot of fun. We were thinking we might put something together, but nothing was for sure..."_ Note that Lincoln and his (still) wife Laura got married in 1994, some months after the recording of this "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album and just before Lincoln embarked on a 6-month North American tour to support it.
Speaking of a “little girl”, I'm now wondering if these two songs aren't related or even addressed to the same person: _"I'm the fool that played the part, the one that broke your heart, girl I'm so sorry... So what more can a poor boy do, I'm reaching out to you, so now don't you stay?"_ / _"Run away, one more day, a broken-hearted child at play... I pray for you Baby Blue, in the name of love I reach for you!"_ And, a little further on: _"Shades turn red from green to blue, what more can I do? I told you this before, so please walk out that door..."_ / _"And the neon lights, reflect your life, only you know where you hide, baby! Stop yourself before you fall, stop before you lose it all, 'cause somewhere there's love..."_ What do you think of these similarities?
@@CyregO ......... Every interesting!! I never really knew how much they back each other up!! I'm not even sure if Perry realizes that!!...lol... Thank you for your reaction (and your subscription too), sir: it gave me the opportunity to discover some of your songs. Hats off to you! It's funny that you and Steve share the same surname, because when I first discovered Steve Perry, and in particular his portraits chosen to illustrate the album "For the Love of Strange Medicine", of which _You Better Wait_ was the first single, I wondered if he didn't have Indigenous origins. In fact, it turns out that he is the grandson of Azorean immigrants, from a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, who arrived in California when both of his parents were just children... so, nothing to do with it! By the way, do you know the song _Colors of the Spirit,_ one of Journey's songs they co-wrote with lyricist John Bettis for their reunion album "Trial by Fire", two years after this solo album? I've always imagined that it referred to the Wounded Knee Massacre, or at least to a dramatic episode in the American Indian Wars... What do you think of this supposition?
Can't get enough of listening to it Steve Perry is the "voice"..When I first heard this I thought it was Journey, Steve's original band. However, I believe, from this song, that this band Steve put together is equally as good, if not better than his original Journey band Steve fronted for years to major success.
Great stuff from this "Strange Medicine band", as Steve himself liked to call them, indeed, both on their only studio album _(I Am, Stand Up Before It's Too Late...)_ and live. Not to the point of dethroning Journey in my eyes though, especially with all the ups and downs he went through with that band, and the musical excellence of each of the members - Neal, Gregg, Steve Smith among others - who made it up over the years (at least from the 70s to the 90s, over the period Steve was involved), but one of my eternal regrets is that Steve didn't revive this 2nd band in 1998, after his definitive departure from Journey and "while the iron was hot"... A few years ago, Lincoln Brewster brought out his _surf green_ guitar from those years, announcing that he was still in touch with Steve, but nothing has come of it musically... yet?
I was fortunate to see Steve when he toured for this album. Truly a night to remember, amazing. Missing You will always be a special memory. Still have the t shirt

My pleasure, Barbara: as the full version was nowhere to be found even on Steve's official channel, someone had to do something about it! So thanks to Velizar (@Vel_0000), who merged the three parts and kindly shared the result with me.
Filmed out in the Mojave. I've taken a lot of photos of abandoned places, but I wish I could find this one! And my god, with his long hair? He should have worn it long all along. *swoon*x1,000
Is it the presence of Joshua trees that makes you say that? Personally, I think so too, even though Wikipedia states (without source) that it was filmed “in the Grand Canyon area” with a link pointing to the main one by that name, in Arizona. Yet the Mojave Desert is closer to L.A., where Steve recorded this _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ album. By the way, I assume by its interior structure that the ruined shack shown in this music video is an old movie set, and given its dilapidated state at the time of the music video, there might be nothing left of it today, 30 years later? On a personal note, this cabin in the desert reminds me of the end of _Ask the Dust,_ John Fante's 1939 bestseller: at the end of the novel, the narrator's girlfriend, seriously ill and consumed by addictions, gives up on the happiness he can finally offer her and disappears *into the Mojave Desert* (😉) after a last stop in the scruffy wooden shack of the narrator's love rival...
@@CyregO You're right, Joshua Trees grow in Arizona too. I do know they only tend to grow in a narrow range of elevation, but, I'm sure there are many exceptions to that. As for the location with Steve, who can say? Could be anywhere. Looks legit. A guy found the actual Joshua Tree pictured on the U2 album Joshua Tree, outside the Park, but close enough to the Park. When I was there, it had fallen over (Pushed over?) and was dead, and not much let of anything, including all the tokens it's been photographed with.
@@hushingsilence Sad if this tree was intentionally damaged... Some information about it from the Wikipedia page for U2's eponymous album: _The tree photographed for the sleeve fell around 2000, yet the site remains a popular tourist attraction for U2 fans. One person inserted a plaque into the ground reading, “Have you found what you're looking for?”, in reference to the album's track “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For”. It is a common misconception that the site is within Joshua Tree National Park, when in fact it is over 200 miles away from the park._
@@CyregO Yep, that's it. The plaque is really cool. I would think that occasionally people might pour some water at it's base, since it was so popular. I find it curious why it fell over/died. Perhaps that's another mystery to solve. But... I digress. 😄
I can't stop listening to this song. It is hauntingly beautiful. Like all his music you feel his passion and love in your ♥️. His music will go on forever.
Thank you for your comments. In that case, I encourage you to discover (or listen again to) "Little Girl" from Journey's _Dream, After Dream_ album: same theme, maybe even same person to whom these two songs are addressed...?
Feelin' him in 'Traces', reflects his lessons learned so far; what a standout human being (from everything I've heard, seen, and read about him), one day maybe a chance meeting, one can wish ! During the interim, I'm California Dreamin'....
Oh, interesting fact Kevin, thanks to you (and thanks to Vel_0000 who shared the full music video with me). That might explain the few comments in French under this video: not necessarily from French/Europeans like me, but rather from Quebecers?
Part of the original video is on Steve's official channel, but the whole introduction and ending were missing. Thanks to Vel_000 who fixed that for us fans.
One of the best vocalists of his generation, clearly. I also love his discography, hence the 3 playlists I've dedicated to him (both on his Journey period and his solo career before, during and after Journey).
Nice comment Miste, which I also relate to, but unfortunately it's extremely unlikely that Steve himself will read it. Even on his official channel _(steveperrymusic),_ the only time he responded to comments was during the livestream of his new albums, and sadly, the only “Steve Perry” accounts responding under his videos are usually frauds/scammers...
@@MisteHartley I'd love it too if he'd pop under this video, though! 🤩 But the only Steve Perry who ever commented here was a fake account that I had RUclips delete promptly...
@CyregO i know I had one last year come here and pretend it was him. And wanted lots of money to charities and investment. When I am struggling and not even living paycheck to paycheck. Thank you for you comments. And sharing the video.
The “Strange Medicine band”, as Steve liked to call them, only existed for one album, unfortunately: _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ was recorded in 1993, released in 1994, and toured until 1995, when Steve briefly returned with Journey for _Trial by Fire,_ their last album with the historic line-up.

Yes Catherine, from his 2nd solo album _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ (3rd album, if counting the never-released _Against the Wall),_ during Journey's _Raised on Radio / Trial by Fire_ 10 years hiatus. Personnel of the "Strange Medicine band" were: Lincoln Brewster (guitar), Paul Taylor (keyboards), Moyes Lucas (drums), Todd Jensen (bass), and -of course- Steve Perry on lead vocals (+ Larry Kimpel, playing bass on the record). Each of them also took part in songwriting and backing vocals. Sadly, they parted ways at the end of the tour in 1995, as Steve was making his (brief) return in Journey, and never had the opportunity to record any further projects together. Note that Todd Jensen, who had already played with Neal Schon in the past, is now Journey's bassist since 2021! 😃
In that case Shelley, feel free to explore my complete SP playlists in the pinned comment: I'm pretty sure you'll find some never-released hidden gems there. 😉
Is this the earliest video of Lincoln? First time I saw him was when he had short hair and a LONG Mohawk after his Christian rock album, the one with Everlasting Love on it. An album later, he and his band actually played at our church in Lake Elmo, MN. So talented, and humble. A paraphrased quote: “the people that hear the guitar work on my album are kinda missing the point”.
Presumably, yes (during these same studio sessions around 1994, they had at least also recorded _I Am_ and _Listen to Your Heart_ from the same album, but unfortunately I've never found the full music videos on RUclips). That same year, Lincoln and his wife Laura got married, before he embarked on a North American tour to support this "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album. In the Journey Force's last newsletter (1993), Steve Perry tells his friends Lora Beard and Cyndy Poon about their meeting: Lora: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_ Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. _Randy is now the main West Coast cheese for Sony Music. Yes, you can feel the freshness and spontaneity of this new band at the time. Thanks for stopping by this video, Lydia (funny, I have a sister named almost like you: Lydie, which is a rather rare name here in France).
I think I understand the overall message of this song, but I must admit the form seems ambiguous to me: how can a man in his forties -since there's no clue here to distinguish the singer from the narrator- warn a 17-year-old girl against _“the evil of the night”_ while making advances towards her and repeatedly calling her _“child” / “baby”?_ Isn't he part of the problem too? (love the harmonies too, though: one of the great qualities of Perry's compositions)

Thank you so much for this gem from Steve!!
My pleasure, Barbara: as the full version was nowhere to be found even on Steve's official channel, someone had to do something about it! So thanks to Velizar (@Vel_0000), who merged the three parts and kindly shared the result with me.
such a great and recognisable voice
You are amazing, don't live you're last day alone, you're voice melts my heart ♥️
Oh how much i love you Steve. Your music is awesome
_Where there’s life, there’s hope!_ Maybe next year... ruclips.net/video/Of3FcciqKdA/видео.html 😉
Thanks for posting. This song reached number 1 in Canada in 1994.
Oh, interesting fact Kevin, thanks to you (and thanks to Vel_0000 who shared the full music video with me). That might explain the few comments in French under this video: not necessarily from French/Europeans like me, but rather from Quebecers?
❤beautiful and talented ❤️
Beautiful voice and he's so cute
Love Steve Perry!
Wow! First time hearing this song. Amazing indeed!
Part of the original video is on Steve's official channel, but the whole introduction and ending were missing. Thanks to Vel_000 who fixed that for us fans.
So precious voice, I love this man!! ❤❤
One of the best vocalists of his generation, clearly. I also love his discography, hence the 3 playlists I've dedicated to him (both on his Journey period and his solo career before, during and after Journey).
His voice is hauntingly perfect❤❤
Your voice is so inspirational. A warm feeling in the heart. Thank you for your beautiful talent. I must say it would truly be a honor to meet you.
@CyregO yes I know. I been through this the past year. And I left the message to let him know if he ever did read it. But I tried anyway.
This voice😮
What a voice. His voice is so beautiful.
Great song 😊 he was fabulous
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL ❤️ LOVE YOU STEVE PERRY ALWAYS ❤
Okay, but why all caps?
What a great singer love the hair and new band.❤❤❤❤❤
The “Strange Medicine band”, as Steve liked to call them, only existed for one album, unfortunately: _For the Love of Strange Medicine_ was recorded in 1993, released in 1994, and toured until 1995, when Steve briefly returned with Journey for _Trial by Fire,_ their last album with the historic line-up.
I have loved Steve Perry forever!
Love this song and @steve is so beautiful voice
As a reminder, his one and only handle on YT is @steveperrymusic (as opposed to imposters/scammers).

Given the subject of the song, is this person all right?
My sweet friend still has it!
Any connection with Lamont Dozier (H.D.H.), with whom Steve had written _Forever Right or Wrong?_

Very cool, S.P. rocks !!! 😎👍
I couldn't agree more, thanks for stopping by to comment!
I love their background vocals!!!!!
Yes, one constant with Steve Perry is that he's always worked on the harmonic quality of his songs, whether with Journey or solo.
Anything Journey did back then was majic!!!❤❤❤
Note that here this is a Steve Perry's solo project, _For the Love of Strange Medicine,_ recorded during Journey's 10-year hiatus between _Raised on Radio_ and _Trial by Fire._
I'd love to see him one more time
_When you close your eyes / You long to be there / One more time?_ 😉
_"As far as touring again, I never say never at this point. My life has proven me just that.”_ (Steve Perry, May 2024, Rolling Stone Magazine)
Is this a solo song? I don't recognize anyone in the band. Love it. I am amazed. His hair is down to his waste. Love it.
The greatest vocalist ever. Have all of his music up to Traces and his Christmas album! Will always be my favorite singer!!
In the Journey Force's last newsletter (1993), Steve Perry tells his friends Lora Beard and Cyndy Poon about their meeting:
Lora: _How about introducing the guys who played on your record?_
Steve: [...] _I found Lincoln Brewster, the guitar player, through Randy Jackson_ [Steve's friend, whom he recruited as bassist on Journey's latest album at the time, "Raised on Radio"]. He was living at home with his mom at the time._
Lora: _He must have had a major freak out when you called him out of the blue._
Steve: (laughs) _Yeah, I guess. We were thinking we might put something together, but nothing was for sure..._

Just an amazing voice ! ♥️
That voice!!!!🤗😍
I love the message of this song. And the harmonies.
Steve se lo llevó todo, talento, virtuosismo, belleza, atractivo y sensualidad.
To je pravda, je výjimečný ❤❤
