I just ran the numbers. With free Amazon Prime shipping and 7% sales tax, this homemade seed mix comes out to about $3.15 per 100 grams of seed mix. If you are looking to compare costs with your retail seed mix, this should help you.
FINALLY!!!! I've lost count of how many videos talk about how healthy a homeade food mix is, but are so vague in what they need in them, and are very unwilling to give their recipes out. So, thank you, thank you for sharing your recipe!!! Also, I think it's so funny that our last winter white loved meal worms and hated crickets, and our Campbell we have now hates meal worms and loves crickets only...
WOW!! That’s actually crazy!! Thanks for sharing that! I should try my crickets with my hybrid, Bambi! I wonder if she’d like them, I didn’t even think of that! :)
Your videos are amazing! Love that you show your recipe too! There are multiple youtubers who say they make their own but dont add their research or recipes! So thank you! Would LOVE a recipe for syrians as well!
Looking at your hams makes me even more excited to get mine! I forgot how cute pure winter whites are! I used to have a winter white but she was a hybrid and not so white! Espresso is so cute!

YAAH! This comment made my day! I have always struggled with where to start too, so I'm so excited to share my journey so it'll help other take their hamsters food into their own hands!!!
I recently got a hamster and I've been looking for a recipe to make our own home mixture, so this video is perfect for us. The problem is I can't get to your recipe link. Can I find it somewhere else? Thank you in advance, excellent topic.
This is fantastic It’s not easy to find this kind of information so thank you so much. Non of my hamsters would eat crickets either and so I put them out for the birds and they won’t eat them, maybe something is off with store bought crickets ? I love this content can’t wait to follow your posts ❤
REALLY?? That’s good to know my hamsters aren’t just picky HAHA I never know because they are from the UK, I feel like they don’t like the same treats as my America hamsters HAHAH. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That’s crazy that the birds didn’t even eat them. 😳 And thanks so much for the compliment :) so so glad you liked it!!
Uuuggghhhh... I really love your channel and.. I need more. I appreciate that you have an acceptable approach to all of this. Hamster care is SO extremely different from what I grew up seeing. As a 1st time Hamster owner, it's a lot to take in.
YES! There is SO much misinformation out there it’s hard to know what’s right and what’s somewhat right and what wrong and sometimes extremely dangerous & unsafe! I’m so glad you’re liking my videos! Makes me happy I picked up RUclips again! 🥰
@@happyhamstery Well, we have a very happy little hamster at our home. Thanks to the information you and other YT creators have put out. I'm happy I did my research before getting a hamster. I'm a little floored by how different it was when I was growing up.
Question. Is this for all hamsters? I am getting a syrian hamster soon. Thank you so much for this video AND the variety amazon list! You're a life saver!
I love this video! I own a winter white dwarf hamster and just got her a couple of months ago, so this video is really informative for me! I really appreciate this channel! Thank you so much for sharing proper hamster care information!
AWW, this comment is so sweet! Congrats on your new HAMMY!!! ✨🥰 I’m so glad you like the channel! It’s been so fun to start and I cannot wait to see where we go!😍
Is this for all hamsters? I've been trying to do research for so long on Syrian hamster seed mix but can't find anything that actually explains what I need to do other than this. Kind of loosing hope at this point 😅Thanks, very informative video ❤hopefully this can be for Syrians.. 😆
Love your video! Question: Is it better to scatter feed, place mix in a bowl or both? I've heard that letting them forage for food is ideal. What do you do?
Awww!! Thanks for that sweet compliment! :) I personally scatterfeed! It’s a perfectly “free” enriching activity for a hamster everyday!! (Which I LOVE) Some hamster owners are concerned they won’t be able to keep tabs on what there hamster is eating if don’t feed the food in a bowl. My solution is scatter feeding on white bedding! You can see the seeds and in the morning, they are all collected :) + hamsters are hoarders anyway, so they are poaching it all and then taking it to a food stash somewhere and not really eating all of it. :) When my hamsters are nursing their pups or super pregnant, I place there food in a pile in their cage so they don’t have to take the time to go find it, and I’d do the same for a recovering hamsters & potential and elderly hamster too :) Hope this helps!!!
Question, Do you need to count sprays as part of their daily diet when calculating the mix? Or are those considered treats or.. extras? Also, which sprays are best for Winter Whites? Does it usually depend on the hamster?
You CAN but you don’t have to. That’s what nice about food is it’s a percentage so theirs some wiggle room for treats and sprays! If they eat one spray all in one sitting, make sure to only restock that kind of spray once a month or bi-weekly and only give a-little. Millet & flax are my hammies FAV!!! But theirs TONS out their. We’re including red sorghum in our fall box 🤫 & their is wheat and oat at the pet section in the bird sections!
I am getting a hamster again soon, and I have a question. Do you need a bowl for it's food, or should I sprinkle my mix around it's enclosure? This video was very helpful by the way!
So I havw a few questions I hope I'm not annoying and that this all makes sense but no one else seems to be able to help with this, I've tried asking a little here and there but I get different answers socmahbe a breeder can help I mean my girl is a Syrian but I imagine the diet is the same I know you said you're not good with like 1 tablespoon of this and that but how do I know how much of this and that do I put in the mix? I'm pretty sure it's not like the same amount of everything right? Also if I decide not to make my own do you happen to know whatz better between Higgins Sunburst and Higgins vita garden? And between mazuri mouse and rat or science select? (For the extra protien) also I was told to take out all corn or my hamsters will get tumors but then i was told not to because that would mess with the nutritional value, what do you think? My hamster actually eats daily salads she has the choice not to but she chooses to and I check her hord but no she ate it all but it's a variety so maybe she just really really enjoys it all
I love these questions!! I’ll try to help as much as I can. :) Syrians actually do have a slightly different diet/nutritional requirements then dwarfs (but it should fall within these same requirements) If you make your own seed mix (if calculated correctly), it’s still far better nutritionally speaking, then the store bought brands. :) 1 tbsp a day is plenty for a Syrian! Especially if you’re including a daily salad and potentially sprays? If you hamster is gaining weight then I’d cut down to every other day or a half a tbsp a day! You can also try to find their hoard, and if their hoard has loads of food, I’d cut it down to every other day also. :) If you don’t decide to make your own seed mix, I would actually recommend going on Etsy to purchases from a small business that makes their own hamster seed mixes with the hamsters nutrition as their number one motivation! There are incredible seed mixes on their! My personal fav is GetZoo (German Seed Mix) Etsy seed mixes will be the BEST you can find in the US, I recommend that over buying sunburst and mazuri rat blocks. I wouldn’t remove the corn because they’re right, it’ll mess with the calculated nutritional values. Corn won’t give your hamster a disease, it’s more of a filler food that companies use, that hamsters don’t really need in their diet. I love that you do daily salads. :) I think that’s super sweet and something I bet your hammy looks forward to EVERY day and you’re giving them natural vitamins form the veggies and fruits so WAY TO GO! Your hammy is lucky to have you :)
@Happy Hamstery oh ok I understand and tha k you so much I'll definitely look on esty I completely forgot it exists haha but the corn this I'd a study some people did saying in rodents the ones who ate less corn has a lower tumor rate
REALLY! 😏 I love a good study, I’ll have to check it out, hadn’t heard of this. Currently my thought was diseases and tumors come from poor genetic lines being bred in rodent mills but not eating nutritionally well doesn’t help that either. Thanks for sharing! I’ll check it out :D
Is this recipe specific to winter white dwarf hamsters? If it is, I think it would be worth mentioning (incase I've missed it😅) as all species of hamster require different diets😊
agreed! was just going to comment this because it seems that she never specified in the video. i assumed this is for ww dwarves as that’s the species she breeds, but it should definitely still be directly mentioned somewhere in the video or description/top comment!
How long do your ingredients last? How many batches do you get from one Amazon order of everything. Scared to drop $400 on food and not get a good amount!
GREAT QUESTION! You could actually instead of replacing it add more of one of the other seeds/grains/legumes/nuts or proteins. But you’d want to make sure it doesn’t throw off the nutritional percentages by adding it to the hamster food calculator!! :) HOPE THIS HELPS!! :)
@@happyhamstery hello, i was writhing a longer response but the systeme did not Take it. Maybee is because i let an link. If i want to let you m'y Web site i can i do ? Is it possible to whrote you an e-mail. Thank agan ❤
GREAT QUESTION!! Sorry for not being clearer in the video. I was referring to the percentage of the overall seed mix. Let’s see if I can explain better here! ↙️ If I make a seed mix that’s 100 grams, I want the protein content to equal 17-19% of the overall 100 gram seed mix, so that hopefully each scoop of food I feed to my hammy will have 17-19% of protein! So, I first calculate each individual seeds, protein, fat and fiber. Lentils have LOADS of protein, for example, (25%), so if I put 10 grams of lentils into my 100 gram seed mix. That adds 2.50% of out of the 17-19% of the protein to the seed mix. I hope this makes more sense, the numbers can be confusing sometimes because there’s so many working parts to calculate everything!
I ordered the higgins sunburst and it has arrived. But i dont know what to do because the correct food for hamsters isnt arriving for a few days, so i dont really know what to feed my hamster until then (august 2-5) could someone please help? I also already have the hamster.
HAHA thanks for sharing :) The $450 in seeds makes 1000s of grams of food and for a Hamstery, that has 45+ hamsters & pups, we go through that kinda food, so it saves money to make our own. :)
I think you need to evaluate the level of saftey for the ingredients you are using for your mix. The rose petals you order on amazon contain harmful chemicals called cyanidins and should NOT be fed to hamsters. Also while grain barley could puncture the hamster cheeks. You also added shelled peanuts , will all hamsters break the outer shell and not ingest it and if they do eat it will it cause any harm ? There are other additions such as flaked oats or corn , can you add more ingerients on your list that are not expensive such as milk thistle.
I have 5 hamsters. Only 1 likes fly larvae. I have a Syrian hamster who will not eat ANY larvae, bugs, etc. Of course he has out lived other hamsters. He’s 2 now. He does have cataracts now. But he’s a good weight. He gets mazuri lab blocks bc that’s the only protein he will consume 🙄
