I will never forget back in, I think it was in october of 1997 when I randomly stumbled upon Ghost in the Shell playing around 9pm on a friday night on a new channel called Teletoon. The next few weeks, they would play banger after banger.
I was exposed to Ninja Scroll, Patlabor, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, etc.
I was 15 yrs old and these animes challenged everything I had seen with superior story and art. Man How I miss the 80s and 90s.

Fist of the north star was was my first exposure to anime (though i was probably a little on the young side to be watching it), and i remember renting several of the others at the local video store (on VHS, which says something about my age...).
Personally, i would add the Armitage movies to this list as well. Some of the action can be a little brutal, but they dive into some similar themes about what makes one "human" as Ghost in the shell. While Vampire Hunter D is quite good (it's a pretty decent adaptation of the novel), i actually prefer the second film, Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust. The visuals are nothing short of stunning, and are closer to the style of the original illustrations of the novel series. This results in some very intense fight sequences that are also rather beautiful. Some of the more disturbing sexual content from the novel has been toned down in the film, and a few liberties get taken with the plot, but they make for good storytelling and development of the themes being explored. It's well worth the watch.

One thing that often annoys me about Japanese anime is that if something is popular, there's not just one film series. There will be the original manga, then a film, a semi-sequel film, a TV show that retells the same story, a film reboot, a spinoff film, another series, more manga, a semi-sequel to the last film, but that is also kind of related to the original films, etc.
I know, I know, just watch the original and be happy. Unfortunately, my brain doesn't work that way. If there's more content, I have this compelling urge to watch all of it to get the complete story.

While I don't recall the rating of the original Blood: The Last Vampire, I feel it deserves at least a mention. While there are 2 subsequent Blood movies and 2 series, the original does the best job of setting the stage for what could have been one of the best stories, ever. Sadly, the movie ends feeling like the pilot for additional story that never followed. The third movie, Blood-C: The Last Dark, started well, it quickly digressed into a rather boring and poorly animated affair. I keep hoping some studio will pick up where the original movie ended.

Decent list of mature themed animated films from the 80s and 90s, but you have several inaccuracies. Heavy Metal and American Pop are not anime movies. They are North American films. Additionally, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is rated PG (at least the American release is), so not even close to rated R.

Fist of the North Star is actually a series with 101 episodes.

    • @23RedTechno
      @23RedTechno 9 месяцев назад +1

Wrong Fist of the north star has 109 episodes in the first season
      season 2 has 43
also the manga had 27, vols
Fist of the North Star (1986 film) is a retelling of the Manga and the first season combine
and the OVA for it is a reboot .
Fist of the Blue Sky is more a prequel series .

A list of adult Anime but no mention of the 2nd Patalabor movie is a severe oversight. A political motivated tale of revenge pitting the police force against the military in a civil war with about 90% of the runtime being dialogue between a few people is about as adult as you can get.

Seeing all these great Amie's it's just sad to think that after the Millenium the quality and quantity just went down (specially for the West).

Surprised that " legend of the overfiend " failed to get any mention what so ever especially considering that it had four sequels with the fourth being a four part series , but maybe it was too graphic for you to watch 😆 I have witnessed several people be unable to finish even the first movie

Akita definitely does not have excessive violence, especially compared to actual gorey and violent anime of the 80s and 90s

I’m surprised Doomed Megalopolis was not on here. It’s pretty brutal and has perverse sexuality in it. But also I didn’t know the infamous scream that I’ve heard people use in their videos is from this show/movie. And also the priestess in here is Keiko who looks and sounds like Kikiyo from Inuyasha. It’s almost like she’s the same person expect, she’s the embodiment of the goddess of mercy in this movie.

Princess Mononoke would have been a better entry in this series. That one has some violent scenes.
Also is Perfect Blue better than Paprika? Cuz that one sucked

There's two that could've made this Top 20 List....Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend....talk about your graphic violence and sex scenes...those two I think tops them all.
