Anime used to be about giving a realistic look. Now anime has an "anime" look that is standardized so multiple artists can work on the same animation. You know how they all seem to be made by the same artist now? Nope, it's legions of artists drawing the exact same way.
Overfiend is one of the most epic, enticing and entertaining things I’ve ever seen. The backstory, the art, the characters, the music. It’s all so well done. It just happens to also be pornography
Legend of the Overfiend makes me think of the English author JG Ballard and how some of his works like the novel Crash (a dark and explicit book about perverts who get their rocks off by getting into car crashes) and the short piece Why I Want To F*ck Ronald Reagan (which is exactly what the title suggests) were considered obscene pornography by some people. Most artists would say, "No, it isn't!" and defend their projects by bringing up the artitic merit and so on, but Ballard always would respond with answers like, "Yes. It's obscene pornography. That's exactly what I was going for." And it's the same with Legend of the Overfiend. It's both art and pornography.
@@ArcherSuh4721 it’s like Caligula. A grand, sweeping epic with an all star cast (in the Japanese version lol), excellent sets/art and music. And hardcore porn. Lots of it
There's definitely a very degenerate dark theme in alot of Japanese anime....like Kite uncensored....wow that got intense and... disturbing in a few scenes
Vampire Hunter D was also gory and super violent. I remember seeing it on the Syfy channel as a kid. That was my introduction to anime back in the 90s. After that, I eventually did see Kite, Demon City Shinjuku, Baki the Grappler, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, etc.
Cause it's mentioned in the other video about gory anime. This one is only for cyber punk and sci-fi but you should watch the other video too, it's good
Man 90% of this list is in my collection! These are masterpieces everyone should enjoy! Also, special note: Demon City Shinjuku and Wicked City were written by the same creator who also created Vampire Hunter D- which Kawajiri would also direct later for Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust!( Both the author and Kawajiri are great friends as well!)
Because that was anime, a dead art form. Modern anime is mostly team-created cartoons in the "anime" style of mere looks. It won't be long before artists are completely phased out and replaced with CGI coders, replacing actual animators altogether. There are programs that perfectly create original works of classic composers, as in perfectly mimicking their style... with the only human involved is the listener. There are children born now who will not see any actual art created in their time... aside from calling memes "art", which will devolve (yes, can go lower than what they are now) into the online version of infant scribbling. I hate to say it but we need to nurture OG weebs (weebs before "weeb" was a word) to bring back anime.
The Japan studio that did the Finalizations for _Transformers the Movie (1986),_ like when Devestator attacks Auto Bot city! And the whole begging sequence- All Hand Drawn AWESOMENESS !!!!! & _Fist of the North Star_ & Both _Vampire Hunter D_ movies (especially BLOODLUST) should be noted.
Genocyber would have had huge potential, if only it had been at least 10 episodes it would have explained everything much better and given a more complete ending, too bad, artistically and cinematically it is a masterpiece
Instead of the thought provoking, exciting, visually amazing animations of the 80s and 90s, now we have thousands of high school pedo loli trash animes. I really wish they would go back to making anime for adults with adult characters.
Trueee I get the point of high school anime, they were fun to watch till a point, but they overdone it so much it losts its flavor and became bitter, to the point there is no anime for mature audiences. Just slice of life clones at best or ridiculous shit with futuristic swords and whatnot. It's infantilizing and not good!

80-90 were the Golden era for Anime. From 21st century the anime sucks, I stopped watching anima about 20 years ago. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Urotsukidoji, Dominion tank Police, The Fist of the north star, New Angel, 3x3 Eyes, Memories from Katsuhiro Ottomo, Lensman, etc,etc...those were real anime not the rubbish they making today, the anime died with 20th century. You missed out on cowboy bebop and samurai Champloo then. Two absolute gems made by the same guy. I was born in 85 so I've been a longtime fan and am definitely biased towards the 80s and 90s anime scene. But I would say you can still include 2000 to 2008 as part of the 80s and 90s golden Era quality. There were many great ones made then, but also was the beginning of the current anime quality out there so it's a mix of good and bad.
Lol not as bad as 8 year old me renting faces of death 1. Thought it was a futuristic science fiction movie with a t Robocop like lead. Turns out the guy wearing the "helmet" was on a death row electric chair 😆. This was my first experience with documentaries in the late 80's. This was not a nat g/discovery Channel docu lol 😆.
Same for me grew up in switzerland was born end 94/beginning 95. But was 5/6 as these anime aired late night on tv and me and my aunt watched them they were so scary i liked them! :D hahaha
I'd stay over at my cousin's house Friday night's and we'd watch the Action Channel's Animidnight which had these kind of movies completely uncut. Blew our 14-year-old minds
The sad part is, these movies would still have an audience, today. Unfortunately, we live in an age of moral busybodies who must ban everything they don't like, rather than simply not watching it.
I was gonna be disappointed if the overfiend wasn't listed but you did forget to mention there were 3 movies all up. Oh Guyver should of got a mention as well.
Yeah wtf, they surely chose the wrong narrator for this one. Political Correctness does not mix well with anime or in fact anything that is decently written at all. Also her going on that giving kids voice acting job in a movie is the equivalent to actual fucking crime was hilarious, guess we should go take all movies that are not intended for children that has a kid as an actor in the movie and go burn them and arrest the creators. Narrator should stay on her twitter bubble and keep thinking that is how everyone in the world thinks lol.
I've seen them all and even more and Yes old-school, cyber, pulp fiction animes are guilty pleasures of mine. New gen anime can't even match those old anime vibes
Wow Literary every anime on this list is part of my first few years discovering anime at my local video stores. With Demon City Shinjuku and Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend being two of the first three Anime I ever saw, just after Akira. It seemed that anime could be a medium for any type of content that main stream (especially American) Movies couldn't or wouldn't even touch at the time. Also I don't think anyone can ague that old 80'-90's anime was, in general, animated so much more inventively and artisticly than the stuff we get now. Wow I just realized how old writing that makes me.
@ANIME IS DEAD No, not at all….I agree with everything he said. Urotsukidoji was the first Anime I ever saw as a Marine in Japan, I own an original copy, and a four disk set with different versions of it from the director. I was laughing at him saying how old it makes him feel. Should’ve explained my post.
I've seen Wicked City, Crying Freeman, Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji back in the 90's when I was about 14-16 Years old and especially Urotsukidoji (don't forget part II and III !) influenced me the most. Based on the Manga by the king of tentacles himself Toshio Maeda it is the most disturbing yet fascinating Anime I've ever seen. 5/7
Both of the _Vampire Hunter D_ movies are on RUclips in HD (no adds). "Blood Lust" has some of the Best Hand drawn art ever ... I love the 80's and 90's art style; some of them closely resemble real humans back then
No they actually some sort of don't but I get it
Lol no
No. Only these Seinen do. I can recommend anime that don’t look like this
Anime used to be about giving a realistic look. Now anime has an "anime" look that is standardized so multiple artists can work on the same animation. You know how they all seem to be made by the same artist now? Nope, it's legions of artists drawing the exact same way.
@@That80sGuy1972 It's just like everything now - go with what's most popular, even if literally everyone else is, too.
That's exactly what I was going for."
And it's the same with Legend of the Overfiend.
I was really hoping it made the list, it's a classic 🤘😄 I snagged a VHS copy from my dad's closet when I was around 13😂
I am surprised that this video did not mention Vampire Hunter D. That one was a CLASSIC. 🕷
Cause it's mentioned in the other video about gory anime. This one is only for cyber punk and sci-fi but you should watch the other video too, it's good
You finished the list with legend of the overfiend and violence jack. As it should. Phenomenal choices
I think demon city is a prequel to wicked city
no shit they have the same plot almost.d
My collection as well !!
I love 90s era anime. Such beautiful hand drawn animation.
& _Fist of the North Star_ & Both _Vampire Hunter D_ movies (especially BLOODLUST) should be noted.
oh man, genocyber was such a mind-blowing series that stuck in my mind for YEARS. i'm so glad this anime made the list!
Hate to be "that guy" but it's a bit of a knock off devilman
@@Bullboy_Adventures it’s original not a knock off.
Found this Anime rental store back in mid 0o's in college. Rented it and I was like WTF in a good way
💀💀💀💀
Genocyber would have had huge potential, if only it had been at least 10 episodes it would have explained everything much better and given a more complete ending, too bad, artistically and cinematically it is a masterpiece
Instead of the thought provoking, exciting, visually amazing animations of the 80s and 90s, now we have thousands of high school pedo loli trash animes. I really wish they would go back to making anime for adults with adult characters.
preach
@@sotothankyouidied Ha ha sorry man my mistake :P.
@@Ulrich_von_Jungingen Its all good
Trueee
I get the point of high school anime, they were fun to watch till a point, but they overdone it so much it losts its flavor and became bitter, to the point there is no anime for mature audiences. Just slice of life clones at best or ridiculous shit with futuristic swords and whatnot. It's infantilizing and not good!
There’s still many anime for adults out there. Devilman Crybaby on Netflix is a great example.
The 80's and 90's were a time where anime directors were high on cocaine
When we were kids it was Akira, fist of the North Star and project a-ko
Akira is not so violent, compared to most of these animes...
Vampire hunter d, macross plus, record of lodoss war, devil hunter yoko
Don't forget wrath of the Ninja that was my very first violent anime
@@spidey36854 macross is unmatched. so good.

You can also google them. Go to Blu-ray.com to see if they’re on Blu-ray. Otherwise, google “(movie title, date, 720p)” if you arrrr up for other options. 😉
Gotta praise the Japanese culture for not folding to western politics.

Ty for the list, as a dyslexic is so much easier to copy and paste than try to spell it my self ;)
I would like to see Baoh on this list, it is such a brutal anime from a golden era. I loved every single one of this animes, there is so much more.
Most fans of Baoh know what else the creator is famous for.

Nice name and pfp
80-90 were the Golden era for Anime. From 21st century the anime sucks, I stopped watching anima about 20 years ago.
Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Urotsukidoji, Dominion tank Police, The Fist of the north star, New Angel, 3x3 Eyes, Memories from Katsuhiro Ottomo, Lensman, etc,etc...those were real anime not the rubbish they making today, the anime died with 20th century.
Ahh I miss the 80-90 so much.
I've seen almost every Anime you've mentioned. Lily C.A.T., Genocyber, Cybercity Oedo....golden Times.
@@khanofkhans6546 born '80. Yea i agree with you although i haven't seen much fromm 2000 on.
@@khanofkhans6546 he missed monster as well.
@@khanofkhans6546 Nah I saw it at least 20 years ago and its rubbish. Anime dies with 20th century.
Ahhh... Legend of the Overfiend. The reason my mother quit renting me anime from Major Video.
you seen the uncut version
I saw the OVAs, man they're crazy
@@nicolapesce8911 Uncut version was absolutely insane.
It's practically "hentai" so no wonder, haha.
Lol not as bad as 8 year old me renting faces of death 1. Thought it was a futuristic science fiction movie with a t
Robocop like lead. Turns out the guy wearing the "helmet" was on a death row electric chair 😆. This was my first experience with documentaries in the late 80's. This was not a nat g/discovery Channel docu lol 😆.
This is the type of anime I grew up on. When I was a kid, anime was for adults.
Same for me grew up in switzerland was born end 94/beginning 95. But was 5/6 as these anime aired late night on tv and me and my aunt watched them they were so scary i liked them! :D hahaha
Underrated comment lol but its true though. None of this stuff was for kids at all but we still watched it anyway
And? Guess you’re a decent member of society. No irony.
I'd stay over at my cousin's house Friday night's and we'd watch the Action Channel's Animidnight which had these kind of movies completely uncut. Blew our 14-year-old minds
The day when forbitten was not forbitten
If people were more open minded we could have better animes 😥
The sad part is, these movies would still have an audience, today. Unfortunately, we live in an age of moral busybodies who must ban everything they don't like, rather than simply not watching it.
80s and 90s anime was the best for sure. Especially the full length movies. Not many series could afford animating on 1s.
No Ninja Scroll?
Remember, all these probably wouldn't have existed without the devilman and violence jack Mangas.
Devilman is my all time favorite manga it has no limits I love it. Devilman: apocalypse is the darkest movie I’ve ever seen
Devil Man both The Birth And The Devil Bird plus Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust are my absolutely favourite
This is the anime I was raised on.
My list:
1. Ninja Scroll
2. Hokotu No Ken (F.O.T.N.S)
3. Violence Jack
4. Devil Man
5. Berserk
6. The Judge
7. Wiked City
8. GenoCyber
9.The Guyver
10. M.D. Geist
11. Angel Cop
12. Akira
don't forget angel cop!

dark myth and doomed megalopolis, obligatory!
I was gonna be disappointed if the overfiend wasn't listed but you did forget to mention there were 3 movies all up. Oh Guyver should of got a mention as well.
This is practically all my favorite anime.
Just imagine The Rock in a Hard R live action version of Mad Bull
Cena is better. The Rock is too Disney.
You mean like in the other guys lol
@@acexxxoasis That movie was off the hook hilarious 🤣😂
I love Apocalypses Zero, fun fact is Harara is a man, his body was transformed by the armor since it possesses a female soul
You forgot a few: Psycho Diver, Bio Hunter, Twilight of the Dark Master.
Demon City Shinjuku! I remember seeing that on the Sci-Fi channel.
Gosh, I miss Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi!
Political incorrectness? Count me in! Shut up and take my money!
I Was Born- In 1976 ---
And The 1980's and 1990's
We're My Best Years As ...A Kid Growing Up. And Cartoons... We're Everything .... To .."Me
Wow Literary every anime on this list is part of my first few years discovering anime at my local video stores.
😂
You see first Hentai/Anime same time.
@ANIME IS DEAD
No, not at all….I agree with everything he said. Urotsukidoji was the first Anime I ever saw as a Marine in Japan, I own an original copy, and a four disk set with different versions of it from the director. I was laughing at him saying how old it makes him feel.
Should’ve explained my post.
I love political incorrectness in my anime.
Hence I love Mad Bull 34.
Mad Bull 34 is awesome. Got it on dvd
You're gonna love Space Adventure Cobra.
Haha I was going to say Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman but that came out in 2000. The Demon fights before and when Akira fights Amon just damn.
Yet you still get some genius out there calling Anime cartoons 😔
I've seen Wicked City, Crying Freeman, Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji back in the 90's when I was about 14-16 Years old and especially Urotsukidoji (don't forget part II and III !) influenced me the most. Based on the Manga by the king of tentacles himself Toshio Maeda it is the most disturbing yet fascinating Anime I've ever seen. 5/7
God there is some shit in those urotsukidoji films. My young teen self remembers the sex scenes more than anything.
Both of the _Vampire Hunter D_ movies are on RUclips in HD (no adds). "Blood Lust" has some of the Best Hand drawn art ever ...
Like the OG Japanese studio that did the Finalizations for _Transformers the Movie 1986._ The whole 'planet eating' beginning sequence. And when Devestator attacks Auto-bot City. Legendary Hand drawn art!
"MD Geist" and his sequel "MD Geist Death force" can be added to this list.
"Kite", reminds me of a Negative version of the Move "the Professional"
But " Don't be so sure MOTHER FUCKER" in the middle of the video got me😂
I didn't remember Lucifer saying something like this that in this scene 😂😂😂😂
