It's really interesting that the Cyberpunk genre was such a big influence on anime and manga like Akira and Ghost in the Shell which then in turn became big influences on modern cyberpunk media
Oedo 808 was the very 1st Anime I had watched, without knowing what Anime even was. I seen it on a local local TV station at about 1am when minding my wee cousin. I was still in school at the time, and seeing a 'cartoon' swear, absolutely blew my mind and started my 30+ year love for Manga/Anime. Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend was my first purchase on VHS - around 13 years old... awesome.
Blame was the best manga I have ever read in my life, anime was just too short for even a part of the story but I'm very glad it exists. It's quite good also. 90's and 00's cyberpunk was the best Armitage III, Wonderfull Days, Ergo proxy, Casshern sins, Casshern movie, and many, many more.
@@JackShen yes, it is not easy read at all. So much going on, so few lines almost none. It took me a few times to read just to understand the story better. Each time i loved it even more, story is almost as a emotional journey.
M-66 - The Creator's grand-daughter was a simple test target for the androids and that target data was never changed before the accident that activated them.
This is true, and yet the question remains quite reasonable: Why would *anyone* use their own *granddaughter* as the target, even a *test* target, for a military killing machine?
@@Jianju69 The original targeting algorithim was created in a lab. The scientist's grand-daughter's photo was the first thing he looked at when compiling the targeting code. Not my favorite, but I see its place. If you like something with more of a pulse, Black Magic M-66 is a great option. Really enjoyed that one. Just super short.
I don’t know if it’s Cyberpunk, but I recently watched an anime called Burst Angel, it kinda reminded me of Cowboy Bebop, the main character was pretty interesting and the cast was comprised of badass female mercenaries
I would recommend the Appleseed series of Amine; well written, amazing visuals and an interesting view of what happens if we let AI's design and control government and society.
Appleseed is one of Shirow's best works, but not many people know about it. It never got the long-format treatment in Anime that Ghost in the Shell did.
Much like Blame!, Appleseed has never been made into a worthy Anime. I hear the most recent series are the closest that has come to be, but from the sound of it, Patlabor 2 has a lot of the political flavor of Appleseed that is missing from the anime versions (without the AI governance stuff that made Appleseed so groundbreaking as a manga). All praise aside, the manga feels unfinished to me which is sad as Shirow seems uninterested in returning to it. Still worth checking out though. Black Magic is the first anime by/based on Shirow's work for those who don't know here and is available to watch on youtube. I would recommend it.
This channel has yet to recommend me anything bad. With the current lockdown restrictions these videos have been a great help in finding new movies and anime to check out.
Black Magic M-66's "Plot Hole" was explained in the show. The Test Target was the granddaughter so on malfunction/default orders they followed it. I kind of love it because the Military is NOT Evil in the story. All the soldiers fight seriously to stop the machines and to save one girl.
I still have a DvD of the Animatrix, somewhere. Was a great collection of shorts. The Tekon kinkreet people did one of them, as well. I’m really happy they did this video. I ran across some great anime/manga (I don’t know the difference) in the 90s and really want to find more. There’s just so much out there it’s hard to find the more hard core stuff that I like.
Cyber City was my favorite Manga Anime back in the 90s but even today it hold's up, i wish the boss battles from that anime were some how implemented into Cyberpunk 2077 in some form would have been call to have seen that happen.
Hello there, I really dig your videos. I´m new to Anime and I will start with all the classics from the 80s. Just watched Wicked City and I really enjoyed this one. I got a question too: Whats the name of the background music in the parts you speak? Sounds like some Vaporwave to me. Many thanks :)

Loved seeing Patlabor (2) on this list. I loved it when I was younger. This and Battle Angel: Alita. Oh.... And Dominion Tank Police... Don't watch it in a serious mood! B-)
In Black Magic M66 it's explained why they target her if you pay attention to the dialogue. She was a default target setting in their initial programing
Cyber City was released in 1990, but it is actually an 80's production, it just didn't come out until 1990. That's why it feels like it's 80's, because it is.
This was a good video, but a couple of points: Black Magic M-66: I can't speak for what may or may not have been in any dub versions, but it was clearly explained that when the robot creator developed the AI for the machines, he used his granddaughter as a test target for them. As such, they revert back to that when they malfunction. Memories: Magnetic Rose: You mention the art direction of Satoshi Kon, but completely ignore director Koji Morimoto. (Who also directed the best segment of The Animatrix) This film was Morimoto style all the way. While it has been said he is a slow worker, and hasn't put out as much content as some fans might like, everything he does is top notch. Megalobox: This show didn't just come out of nowhere. It was created for the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe, the greatest boxing anime of all time. This is also why it has such a retro style, and is almost entirely hand drawn, even though it is a pretty recent anime. BLAME!: One reason fans were disappointed with this show is that the original manga creator studied to be an architect, and then, for some reason, became a manga artist. That's why his structures, and the worlds he builds, are so engaging. This was lost in the animated film. Megazone 23: I am not sure I would call this show underrated. Anime as whole was not big in the west in the 80s and 90s, but Megazone was *super popular* among anime. Everyone I knew was into it, and fans talked about it all the time. The first part also featured character designs by Hal Mikimoto, famous for Robotech in the west. (Perhaps gaining some note again for Kabaneri?)
Just a quick thought... the 3rd one you guys go over.. Might want to be careful with scenes with bright 'white' repetition-flashes of light... Epilepsy triggers and all.. :) ( 4:39 for reference :) )
"Are you familiar with the anime series Bubblegum Crisis?" YES!! It's one of my all time fave series (both the original and remake!). While it wasnt the earliest anime I was exposed to (that would have been either Thunderbirds 2086 or Robotech), it was one of the ones that was incredibly influential to me
In "Black Magic M66" it does explain why the grand daughter is the target of the killer robots. I don't want to say here for spoilers but I promise it does explain why.
Anime wasn't devoid of cyberpunk influences, some of the earliest CP works were available there in the mid 80s. they just took it in a very different direction than we (that is, people in 'western countries') did
I greatly enjoyed this video. I've seen Megalobox and I agree that it's underrated. I look up on main character more like Rock Balboa. As for the rest of these anime. I will surely watch them if I can. I love anime. Great job with the video.
Man, man, man... i really love your content. Amazing. Sharing @Twitter like this deserve! You need a Twitter account so i can see more of your videos. Sometimes i forget to use youtube xD
The English-only movie version isn't _that_ bad, though Kiefer Sutherland put like no goddamn effort into his part. As good as the OVA is, it'd be nice if there were a Japanese dub of the film, because I like some of their editorial choices, the movie edit's pacing makes the whole thing _pop_ just a bit more.
Black Magic M-66 was one of the first works by Shirow Masamune (Creator of masterpieces such as Ghost in the Shell, Dominion Tank Police, and Appleseed). It was criticized for the confusing story, so I don't think it's surprising how this issue appeared in its anime adaptation. Haven't watched it yet, but I'm planning to soon.
Megalobox was great. The hip-hop inspired sountrack really added to the coolness. Gonna check out a few of these. And I think Bubblegum Crisis should be included in this list as well

My thoughts exactly. They mentioned BBC but didn't include it? Huh??? I also expected to see Appleseed here as well.
They already featured Bubblegum Crisis in a previous video.
Bubblegum Crisis isn't extremely underrated though.
Tank police is amazing
@@mariic2 Ah. I see.
Thanks!
Great video and content. I really enjoyed the Blame! (pronounced Blam I've heard) manga and anime. Although not strictly Cyber - how about Gantz?
Just two days ago I started watching Mardock Scramble and now I see it here
In Black Magic M66 it's explained why they target her if you pay attention to the dialogue. She was a default target setting in their initial programing
I still remember that Patlabor Movie. The politic and story are awesome.
Cyber City was released in 1990, but it is actually an 80's production, it just didn't come out until 1990. That's why it feels like it's 80's, because it is.
Great video. With so much out there it can be a daunting task to sift through this genre to find a diamond in the rough. This helps alot..
Respect for including Black Magic, awesome OVA.
2 I would include as must watch for ppl wanting to watch a more slow paced philosophical anime is:
Ergo Proxy
Texhnolyze
This was a good video, but a couple of points:
Black Magic M-66: I can't speak for what may or may not have been in any dub versions, but it was clearly explained that when the robot creator developed the AI for the machines, he used his granddaughter as a test target for them.
While it wasnt the earliest anime I was exposed to (that would have been either Thunderbirds 2086 or Robotech), it was one of the ones that was incredibly influential to me
Same here, it was the first anime I bought on VHS and gave me a positive impression of Anime from a young age.
Cyber city 808 is awesome, still stands up today. Great music too
Listen to Space Oddity directly after Magnetic Rose, it still gives me chills how perfect they match and overlap
I found two I´ve never seen... Parasite Dolls and Mardock Scramble. Thank you so much
Send me a list of your choice
Sad Metropolis didn't make steam punk or cyber punk list :(. Cool to see Blame! on here. One of the best universe building animes imo.
Great Video. Though I'm wondering which fools underrate Cyber City Oedo???? :P
In "Black Magic M66" it does explain why the grand daughter is the target of the killer robots. I don't want to say here for spoilers but I promise it does explain why.
Anime wasn't devoid of cyberpunk influences, some of the earliest CP works were available there in the mid 80s. they just took it in a very different direction than we (that is, people in 'western countries') did
Megazone 23 should be on here too. Esp since Black Magic is here. Oh you did mention it at the end, great!
We all love a good old fashioned Cyberpunk Anime
I greatly enjoyed this video. I've seen Megalobox and I agree that it's underrated. I look up on main character more like Rock Balboa. As for the rest of these anime. I will surely watch them if I can. I love anime. Great job with the video.
Cyber City Oedo 808 is an instant classic and a personal favourite, how is this not available on blu ray yet?!?!?!?
Getting a release on blu ray in region b jan 2021
Armitage III
Burning Angels (maybe in the list)
Roujin Z
Man, man, man... i really love your content. Amazing. Sharing @Twitter like this deserve!
You need a Twitter account so i can see more of your videos. Sometimes i forget to use youtube xD
Thanks for the list! What's the background music in this video?
Armitage III is a great show. just make sure u dont get any dub version
@@Bakamoichigei there is a Japanese Version. You have to buy the armitage III movie collection
@@infamousdnt Good tip, thanks. 👍
Dead Leaves (from Hiroyuki Imaishi of Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann & Panty And Stocking fame) is a great sci-fi anime film too!
Very good choices :)
Blame and anything By tsutomu nihei is awesome ...I pray for a part two 🙏🙏🙏
Man, those old animes were so much more detailed than the modern ones.
Great List! There were some others you could have added but I know you were going off opinion & this was almost a 18 min vid 👍
Nice list, the only ones I knew about were Meglow bxing and Ani-Matrix
Cyberpunk is almost just like A.D. Police files and Bubble Gum Crisis. The girl with the mantis blades is a scene right outta A.D. Police files
Megalobox was great. The hip-hop inspired sountrack really added to the coolness. Gonna check out a few of these. And I think Bubblegum Crisis should be included in this list as well
Patlabor 2 has an epic villain monologue.
i'm so glad to see black magic m-66 here, it's an all time fav.
Nice video. I wonder whats the background music name ?
Some real hidden gems on this list and the other ones he does
Spriggan is another really good one.
Excelent Recomendations. Thank you very much!
This videos content and narration has just earned you a sub....💯💯💯
I think I like your anime lists best, because there is always stuff I've never heard of I want to watch.
Kawajiri, Otomo, Peter Chung, Oshii, Satoshi Kon.... that's like all the best anime directors included in this list
All those cyberpunk anime films on your list are freaking awesome I have seen half of those films.
Love the video dude, some of theses I haven't actually seen. Gonna check them out.
Check out Darker Than Black it's probably one of my favorites and it has a lot of cyberpunk themes.
Oh snap, I just realized that Odeo 88 is supposed to be pronounced 8088! Like the processor! Thats awesome!
