Top 45 Cyberpunk Anime of All Time - Explored

- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- Anime has often dabbled into various genres. Starting from romantic series that revolve around classical music to a series where mentally unstable teenage kids pilot huge mechanical robots, the possibilities have been explored far and beyond.
One such genre that has always seen great popularity due to both, the nature of the genre itself and the phenomenal content that has been produced under it, is Cyberpunk.
Conceptually, Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction, similar to Steampunk. While Steampunk deals with a historical setting with steam-powered machinery for the technology, Cyberpunk dives into a highly advanced world where technology is as developed as man himself. However, the quality of life is far from being as good as the tech.
Basically, it is a blend of high-tech and low-life. A dystopian society where robots and humans often coexist. Or humans turning into cyborgs with cybernetic enhancements. There is also high emphasis on the internet and its power over society.
And the content for this genre has been exquisite to say the least. So, let’s dive into 45 such anime series and movies that have been able to grasp the essence of Cyberpunk phenomenally.

" Fist Of The North Star " ALLLLL DAY !!! 😬👊🏼
Kenshiro is king
That's post apocalyptic, not Cyberpunk
@@frankjaeger2565 he got the spirit though... even though he's completely wrong.
Awesome series, but not cyberpunk.
Fist was awesome definitely inspired slot of other titles extremely gory and violent awesome pick from the 80s
Bubblegum Crisis will always be #1 for me. Not just when it comes to cyberpunk, but also in general. It was just that important to my development as an anime fan :)
Seconded.
Bubblegum Crisis and A.D. Police are both epic.
@19zach75 well AD Police was basically a prequel spinoff of BGC
Not only is 2040 close to my heart, but the original bubblegum crisis was my first anime
Bubblegum Crisis had the best soundtrack of any anime, hands down. S for being a cyberpunk classic, it should be, it was a straight conceptual copy of Blade Runner.
Akira is always going to be my #1 anime in any Genre , but I'm biased , I watched it in 1989 and it introduced me to Anime
It did everything right
Depth , character development, twists , emotional rollercoaster etc etc
I see nothing to complain about and that's why it is my favorite Anime of all Time
I liked the manga more than he movie, but both are great!
Cyber City was the first anime I ever watched and was blown away when it was first shown in the UK during the mid 90's on the Channel 4 late license, the Rory McFarlane mix was so pumped.
Same, used to have to pretend to be asleep to stay up to watch it so my parents would tell me off for being up late lol 😆
I saw it sometime in the mid-late 90's on the original Sci-Fi channel, along with Tank Cop Dominion, Akira and Galaxy Express/Captain Harlock.
yeah alot of gems in here
Akira will always be my #1. 34 years later and the animation quality still blows away 90% of modern anime…
100% you want to say
@@Vectorman2X Totally agreed. Even watching Akira today decades later still blows everything away!
Which is ironic given that its an awful movie

Lain is so beautiful and bleak at the same time, and so unique, one of my favorites. Whoever thought of that story must have been living in another dimension. The guy talking about all these animes here should be more mindful of spoilers...
You should look into the creator, Yasuyuki Ueda, he said Lain was a direct commentary on western culture. He's made some strange statements in the past. Not to mention the actual real cybercult thats come from the show
Very complete video!! Well done
What an amazing Post !! Congrats !! Saved me a tons of time searching for them all online!! thanks man!!
If you want watch a bloody good, watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes :)
First of all, great video, thank you, grazie! As a huge fan of Anime since the early 80's( i'm almost 55!!),i'm Happy that most of the Anime in this list are from 80's, 90's and the first decade of the 21st century! Only my opinion ,but the best Anime, and cyberpunk Anime ever are from 80's,90's with few exceptions!! Akira,Gits,Patlabor,Oedo,Ergo proxy,Lain,Batte Angel Alita( Gunmn),Metropolis, Appleseed,Paprika,Trigun,Gundam...are masterpiece. But for me the real masterpiece ,the n°1 Anime ever is Cowboy bebop ! But, i'm not sure it is a cyberpunk Anime!! However Akira, Akira opened up the "western world" to Anime!! So it deserve now and forever a special place!! Greetings from Italy. Ps I apologize for my english!!
This list is phenomenal old school anime/cyberpunk is forever.
Excellent video!! 👍👍
Quite a few of these are just plain scifi, and really don't belong in this list. I'm also not sure how you can cover the remake BCG 2040 without mentioning the original BGC, which was a far superior anime. On the other hand, I am pleased to see the likes of AD Police and Megazone 23 on there. I love how many AIC productions are listed.
Thanks for making this comment, if it wasn’t here already I was going to say all the same things.
Agreed, a lot of these are just mecha shows or space operas, especially in the second half of the list.
BGC 2040 slaps and the original is woefully incomplete story-wise despite having killer animation. Other than that, I'm really happy to see somebody else noticing that a lot of these are just sci-fi and not cyberpunk in any way.
These are classics and I've seen some of them from start to finish.
This was a great video!! I would have added Angel Cop 😁
I swear I watch it at least once a month. lol.
It’s a travesty battle angel alita never got completed. Hope for a reboot some day
For manga/anime experts out there, the cyberpunk/distopia kind :
I'm looking for the title of a movie I've seen on TV in the late 90s, I had little culture at the time so I didn't understand much. This is how I interpreted it :
- it's somewhere in the future after some wordwide devastation, combat machines are everywhere, and they want to kill
- the focus of the story from the middle to the end is on a human mercenary, a lone (?) human survivor, which encounters another weak survivor (I don't remember if it's a woman or not, but I think it was) Now, he also has to protect that person.
- It appears there are factions in this world, one is the robots, mainly on the ground, another I believe are rebels (probably a mix of humans and robots/cyborgs/whatever). The story is screaming the extinction of humanity, humans desperately trying to survive against the robots.
- Plus, there is some kind of fog when it comes to the actual motives of each faction, I tend to believe there are humans traitors or very likely robots disguised as human everywhere.
- The movie ends with our mercenary and the person he protects in the middle of the desert (they crashed ?) with, in the background, millions of robots on the ground and in the air surrounding them, and the man standing for his last battle, with a few weapons (and if I recall, a weaponized arm)
One detail I remember is a giant vertical flying white vessel shaped like a woman, called something like "Oracle" or "Maria", I don't remember, which some humans believe to be the last hope of humanity (like how ? like a shelter ? or a heavily weaponized defensive fortress ? I don't remember that thing doing anything in the movie, just flying high above in the sky endlessly)
The movie doesn't focus on destruction and misery, much more on the few figures like the hero fleeing and trying to survive with some fight sequences. It may be an OAV but I doubt it; duration is over an hour but I missed the start, seems to be a standalone movie as a whole. It's plain hand drawn manga, no CGI, no 3D incrust. There is no fancy digital effects like glowing screens or highly detailed mech weapons or fancy computers, just raw hand drawn sequences. It's not about games or sports (like racings, boxing or entering a virtual world), there is no virus-like plot, no reference to Japan or Tokyo, the scenes depicts the journey of survivors in small towns, the desert, in the wild, sometimes high figures plotting in high tech shelters... No gorgeous girls in sexy suits or chilling boys trying to be smart : every character is dead serious and the overall mood is "fatalism", the movie is clearly not for kids, but is nowhere near the trash and blood you find in some like Animatrix.
There is one comic as a parody of Dragon Ball (mainly, but actually makes parody of everything in the same story) called Dragon Fall. There is a reference to this movie there, precisely the flying vessel called "Mother" which got shot down, the occupants fleeing in a scaled down version of the same vessel (I you happen to know about Dragon Fall of course)
EDIT : The movie doesn't appear to be in this list of (45) anime, probably because it wasn't a goog movie overall. Or perhaps I failed to realize it was among those.
Thanks in advance for anyone having a clue about that movie I'm looking for.
There is another manga movie I failed to pinpoint, but that's for another day.
Try one of the 2 MD Geist movies. This vaguely reminds me of them.
@@roush243 thank you for your time and effort. You are very close : very similar style, mood and probably plot. But none is what I saw. I'm really sorry I couldn't provide more hints, I was a kid at the time, remembering only bits (and I missed the start). All I can add is, at the end, it was in a deserted dusty plain with as desolate mountains far away, a pastel blue/yellowish panorama (like in the morning), our character on ground standing there (with the woman? I remeber two figures, our fighter and a weak one, I believe their vehicle failed or they ran out of fuel), they are stranded and they only can go further on foot, and from every direction around on the ground and in the air, battle robots, surrounding them, closing, overwhelming. The main character draws his remaining weapons, readying for the most epic fight (no words uttered to express anything, facing fatality is what remains) but before the battle starts, the movie ends (credits, music).
As a kid you hope they would make it out of determination or other unexpected turn of events, but as an adult, you know... It was the Dragon Fall parody comic which included a reference to that movie that reminded me of its existence a decade later, then another decade later, I'm here talking/asking about.
I don't even remember names or face features, very sorry.
Thanks anyway, I wish I could have a "grown up" point of review of the whole story by seeing the movie again, that's it, so anyone, if you happen to know, just put a title or the authors, any hint, I'll search myself. Otherwise, what I'm asking is pretty low in terms of actual information value, save your time for better purposes, it's okay. :)
@@StephenKarl_Integral age distorts memories, so what you saw you may never accurately remember or identify, ive been in the same situation. ive spent years searching for animes i saw when younger to no avail. just gotta watch one by one until you get deja vu. for example, the anime you saw may have been lets say shounen or childish in animation style, but as a kid you felt it was realistic with childhood imagination magnifying it, then as an adult you may even see that same one anime but not identify it visually due to you now seeing it as childishly animated or acted.
its not “a wind named amnesia” right?
why did my comment disappear? 🤔 anyway…to me it kinda sounds like “a wind named amnesia”
Cyber city OEDO is my favourite, as I never thought of Cowboy Bebop being true cyberpunk.
right you are, it isn't
@@kaisawatson Yeah. Cowboy Bebop is about as cyberpunk as Firefly. Good science fiction but not really cyberpunk.
You are a god for making a video that list 45 top cyberpunk anime.
I don't think all these classify as "cyberpunk". i was happy to see texnholyze on the list tho. And parasite dolls has a great opening song.
Cyberpunk is quite a broad subgenre with lots of different interpretations within itself. Also, a lot of anime touch on a lot of different genres aswell, so while some may not be strictly cybrepunk, they may draw on elements that are core to the subgenre in the first place.
@@Nemoticon still, there's just no way Ideon is cyberpunk...
@@frankjaeger2565 It's debatable, I agree. But I would say Mecha is a subgenre of cyberpunk.
@@Nemoticon that's just indefensible. Mazinger Z doesn't borrow anything from cyberpunk, nor does the majority of super robot shows, whereas most real robot anime center around war or space settings, not distopian societies. There are very little mecha shows that actually resemble the cyberpunk aesthetics or deal with tose themes; there are even a bunch of fantasy mecha shows, the likes of Dunbine, Escaflowne or Rayearth. As I said earlier, Ideon is a super robot show with a space opera setting, and doesn't really deal with any of the themes explored in cyberpunk.
@@Nemoticon Mecha is not cyberpunk.
I don't know where I commented it before, but just vaguely technological does not make it cyberpunk.
There are specific themes, and specific ideas and specific settings for something to be cyberpunk. A dystopian setting, typically with evil mega-corporations. An antihero who typically is fighting said corporate/governmental power. This is where it gets the "punk" part of its name. A focus on computer science or computer based technology, or AI. NOT mechanical tech or robotics. Robotics:notes is not cyberpunk. Ghost in the shell is. Parasite dolls is. Bubblegum crisis is. Final fantasy 7 is not, despite it often being called such. It does not have ANYTHING pertaining to the cyber part of the cyberpunk moniker, despite having all the other elements.
And on that note, Full metal alchemist is not steampunk despite being fairly close to the description though metropolis and steamboy are for similar reasons.
Urban fantasy is not just vaguely fantasy elements in a city. These genre titles are important so you know what the hell you are picking up when you read or watch something.
I have no idea why I get so many damned notifications over this silly thread.
I'm really happy you included Ergo Proxy in the list. I love that show!
me too.
On Netflix right now
@@whoelsebutmeofcoursei what?!? Seriously?? I'm binge watching it rn! Thanks!
Same.
I just recently watch Megazone again and IT still holds up to this day. Great memories and it just all round goods with pretty good actions. Fun fact: if you want to get best of the anime watch alone or with your best friends.
Whats better than a good anime?
A CYBERPUNK ANIME OF COURSE
WOnderful list!!!!!!! However, missing ANGEL COP !!!!!!
Hopefully we can soon add PLUTO anime version to the list OMG
Not bad team.. missed Tank Police and Black Magic 88. But if you tried to list all the CP genre films and shows, this would have gone a few houres. Add in Ecchi like Angel Cop and.... 8 ) Cheers and thanx for the time.
If they took out all the mecha and sci-fi that isn't even Cyberpunk, like Gundam, Bepop, Trigun, etc they could of fitted in the classics you have mentioned.
Angel Cop was damn good!!!
Tank Police was amazing.
What a fantastic list, I really appreciated this selection! :)
its awesome for sure - but major spoilers within each description which aren't really necessary.
Its not a fantastic list, its very bad because the MD Geist 1/2 is missing, Cyborg009 is a classic Scifi-Space-Anime/Manga(Tōei Animation) like Cowboy Bebop or Captian Herlock and Mobile Suit Gundam is the first big Mecha-Anime-Series overall!!!
Marvelous Videos, he doesn't even know the basics about anime history!
Cool, I have to check some of these out.
Synthwave channels: *YES*
GITS ... I've come to know Psycho-Pass the other day, and it's good, but if we're talking cyberpunk nothing ever comes close to GITS
Where's Astroboy, Little Battle Experience and Zoid : Genesis?
And there is a difference between Mecha and Cyberpunk
I like how the thumbnail is the best one :)
Great video!!
Ah man thank you for this episode🙏
. you forgot to mention Karas and Big-O... but is it a nice video... keep up ✌👍
The narrator sounds like he hasn't watched more than half of these shows. Some of which aren't even cyberpunk. They just have advanced cybernetics as an involved design. But not the overall plot. Whatever fun list I guess. Better than most.
Excellent list. I have (or have watched) like 3/4 of the list. Was surprised to see GunSlinger Girl on it though... I mean yeah it has the rebuilt girls, but.... eh. And Paprika? Hmm....
Well, this Video will be OK If the Titel be different, because almost only 1/3 of movies here are Cyberpunk. Rest ist plain sci-fi from post-apocaliptic to giant robo genre.
My favorite cyberpunk dystopia is planet Earth, good luck finding it on VHS though.
Watching this video I couldn't help but notice how poorly 3D animation has aged. The artstyle used in the 90's holds a special place in my heart.
Some of the titles mentioned here have very little to do with cyberpunk. Megalobox, Gunslinger Girl, Space Dandy are some odd picks for this list.
metropolis
Good work.
please no spoilers next time!! great list tough!
Yeah I thought I might find new anime to check out, but with every singel one spoiled I will not watch this to the end.
Thanks for the warning
I like his presentation lil kiddo
nice pick
Some really good recommendations on the list, but the narration spoils the endings of most of them. Watch without sound or skip through to avoid spoilers!
I am beyond shocked that Battle Angel Alita didn't got a Remastered Blu-ray release to coincide with the James Cameron movie. What a shame.
Thanks for a great vid, but can you make one without spoilers?
Currently watching Metropolis with translated captions. I had seen an excerpt in high school over 20 years ago and wanted to see the whole film.
Goku midnight eye was a good cyberpunk anime as well from what I remember.
Really enjoyed the first one.
What’s the name of the anime from the very same beginning (behind Marvelous Vidoes title)??
The anime is called Gunnm not "battle angel" The doctors name is Daisuki Ido not Dyson Ido and the main female character is Gally not Alita (Alita was the name of Dr. Ido's cat in the manga).
Also the body he first gives to Gally is from a prostitute that is killed by criminals that Daisuki is bounty hunting.
All of the bounty hunters are called "hunter warriors" not just Ido.
The berserker body is one that Ido found years ago on salvage runs and has in storage, he puts Gally in it after her old body is destroyed. As the story goes on you learn that Gally is a former soldier Mars 200 years out of her original time.
You have the story ALLLLLL wrong, you're describing the Hollywood rewrite, the original manga/anime is quite different...
You're absolutely right.
In the german version of the manga I grew up with in the 90s, the anime and the english version of Last Order I read when it came out it was always "Battle Angel", "Alita" and "Daisuke" not "Gunm", "Gally" and "Daisuki".
And I only remember the new arms (with a fancy pattern) she gets being from a prostitute, not her whole first body.
Yes, and no, its original Title is Gunnm, which in the west was dubbed Battle Angel Alita. It's actual title is Gunnm, but calling it Battle Angel alita isn't incorrect either.
who cares, same shit.
It was localised as Battle Angel Alita in the West, and the cat's name became Gally in the West. But yes this video has described the Hollywood continuity, which is inspired by the OVA & the manga, but its not accurate as far the story lines goes.
I think I’ve seen parts of mega zone 23 before when someone was talking about the Robotech movie.
Paprika, gunslinger girl, space Dandy, Mobile Suite Gundam really... I think pokemon is missing from the list. The rest are fine I guess
Doraemon is the real masterpiece of cyberpunk
I thought Levius was Steam Punk, since... Well, since all the machines are steam powered 😅
Jokes aside, great video. No wonder Cyberpunk 2020's author is such an anime fan, he got his inspiration from somewhere - his Mekton Zeta RPG is also pretty cool (Gundam fans, ditch D&D and try this one out *immediately* ).
Why ditch DND when your can play DND Shadowrun which is just DND but Cyberpunked up
@@killjoy5325 Because Mekton has characters piloting giant robots and Shadowrun doesn't 😂
i think you mixed the Battle Angel anime with the live action movie.
alot of the live action details were never in the original anime.
i couldn't tell you much about the original mangas tho.
Love how the video starts with a warning about the pronunciation being off!
Nice video, If you ever do a part 2 please add Dimension W to the list.
Dimension W was my first contact with anime Cyberpunk, from there I went to Akira, Ghost In The Shell and the not so cyberpunk (but still sci-fi) Gundam
What anime is that in the beginning where they climb through the tv/camera
In your intro at 0:33 , what is that anime with the cat girl ?
Ghost in the shell (1995) is Cyberpunk benchmark for me. Nice list, but where is M66, Blue Gender and Tekkaman Blade (last two are more mech vs Aliens then cyber city stuff, but there is much more of this in that list)
Great👍
First of all I love cyberpunk and anime, so thanks a lot for making this list. I don't want to be annoying but there are a few things I think you could work on to make videos like this better:
- Too many spoilers: I ended up skipping the shows I haven't watch and want to since you describe a little too much about the plot of the different shows, sometimes even narrating events really close to the end of those, I know it because I've watched about half of the shows in here.
- The audio volume goes up and down at the beginning of each show description and some added sounds are louder than your voice (like the "woosh" sound when the name of the anime appears on the botom left corner). Balancing audio can be hard, but it makes a huge difference on videos like this to make it feel more professional.
Great list. Here are some addons: Outlaw Star, MD Geist, Dominion Tank Police, Robot Carnival, Sabikui Bisco, Venus Wars, Macross Plus, Tekkaman Blade, Detonator Orgun
No, its bad list! Mobile Suit Gundam is Mecha-Anime-Series like Macross/Robotech-Amines!
OMG, I watch everything on that list...
Remembering my otaku life on university days.
Does Juushinki Pandora also classify as cyberpunk anime?
A number of the entries in this video aren't even cyberpunk like MS Gundam, Ideon, and Space Dandy, to name a few.
Also, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 should be replaced by the original Bubblegum Crisis.
Also, Armitage III sucks hard...
BGC 2040 is crap 2032/2033 is the classic. The thumbnail is from the BGC episode Revenge Road when the AI of the Griffon takes over.
YES thank you for haveing cowboy bebop
It's great but not Cyberpunk, it's sc-fi. Like Trigun is fantastic but it's western/sci-fi. Very inaccurate list.
How was "Needless" not on this list! They're basically "evil" and "selfish" X - Men characters battling over who will rule the "BLACK SPOT", a lawless waste land in New Japan.
yup, I was waiting for that one on the list
Armored Trooper VOTOMS is my all time favorite anime of all times, especially for how incredibly epic it truly is.
1 minute in excellent 👌✌️
Metropolis!!!
Time stamps would be nice
This an episode I cannot misss!!!!
During the intro of this video right @ 0:44 can anybody tell me what is the name of the anime that little snippet scene from??
Neo Tokyo - The Running Man
I'm looking for the anime that's not on this list, i only remember its about revenge about revenge of a desert guerrilla against a futuristic troop general in the middle of the desert, i only remember the protagonist have a big sniper rifle and in the final of the first episode he kills the general who was riding a mecha similar to the anime armored trooper vontoms or animatrix. Can someone help me to find?
Nice
I was never much a fan of anime as a kid or anything but in my teens coming home 2am i wud catch on film 4 on drink and xtc sometimes acid roll a blunt and watch sum great anime movies good times
i would have SERIOUSLY suggested the original bubblegum crisis and A.D. police files over the 2 recommended
Anyone know the name of the music used in the video?
Armored troop votoms, genocyber, cowboy bebop and Akira is my favorite of all times damned Those anime is a masterpiece to mehh
The girl in Ergo Proxy reminds me of the cover of Evanecense album.
45list ?!?! Not complaining, just surprised
Cowboy bebop, trigun and armitage will always have my heart ❤️
HELL YEAH AKIRA
what is the anime that the black knight is the father and a swan is the mother. He is a new type of robot that uses the Sun for extra power. He is torn between his robot make up and the task to save the humans. Thank you!
The moment i have seen most of these series maybe tells i had too much time on my hands when i was little bit younger
I was hopping to see Needless and Accel World on this vid, kinda lacking
Though seeing Mobile Suit Gundam, Blassreiter and Animatrix makes it up in a way
Late 80s and 90s Anime were the best!!!
I looove me some Anime!Great video.
One thing you got wrong with a few of them such as Mobile suit Gundam, there not actually cyberpunk there actually what’s called Super mecha anime and or Real robot mecha anime
im getting hooked on BubbleGum Crisis
You really did your homework dude. Just one question, why no Jin Roh? Very slept on cyber punk anime.
How in the world is Jin Roh Cyberpunk?
@@frankjaeger2565 Soldiers in high tech suits, dystopian world. How it is not?
@@charlesthomas2025 high tech suits? They are just armors, they have no advanced technology, their most advanced feature are the termic googles. Anyway, the movie is not set in a near future, it's an alternative past: that's called an uchronia, not cyberpunk.

Original Bubblegum Crises over the 2040 remake surely... surely?
Second renaissance not second resistance. And the planet in trigun is called GUNSMOKE
Mars express 2023 is better than 98% of entries from this video
"Mentally unstable teenagers operating giant mechs"
Do you know how little that narrow it down?
Bubblegum Crisis and the Knight Sabers forever.
BGC basically is the series that got me started collecting back in the 80s
So many mispronounced names. You couldn't have watched these series... so how can you rank them?
good list. lots of classic masterpieces(looking at Lain , GITS,Alita,Ergo Proxy Patlabor2, Psycho Pass and Akira the list goes on.)
No Akudama Drive in this list is criminal
Not trying to be snobbish or anything but there are quite a few titles here that are not cyberpunk. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't be good recommendations for fans of cyberpunk. Another genre that would appeal to many cyberpunk fans is ultra violent (anime like Angel Cop and Fist of the North Star).
When I first saw this list I thought you were grouping all series following a particular title together as one (ie. Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crash, and Bubblegum Crisis 2040 as one entry). That is, until I saw 2 entries in the Cyborg 009 line. This lack of the original titles in the list really leaves a sour taste to any fans of the genre. As I said previously, if this is just recommendations for fans of the genre that is fine. However, as a list of the genre it falls very short. You might want to re-title the video as recommendations for fans of cyberpunk.
