We could not use cameras last year in Enduros, on any part of our body, but if you mount them on the bars, the handguards are a decent place, and it's a surprisingly good pic from there. Not too bouncy!

I`m not surprised he found it hard to adjust to the 690. I was and still am a fan of singles and among others had three versions of KTM supermotos incl. the 690 SM, the duke etc. I think there`s something about the fuelling that`s not quite right because the 690 motor is powerful but doesn`t feel as tractable as, say the Suzuki 400SM. Where my dynojetted carbed 400SM could be abused to the limit at any opportunity with utter glee, the KTM always felt a bit disconnected at the throttle. I`d go as far as to say that this is a theme very common in modern bikes- FI plus strangling emission regs don`t often add up to a good throttle opening feel. Anyone who`s spent extra money on dyno work, PC etc. will know what I mean. It`s a shame because if the manufacturers would spend the money on perfecting their ONE fuel map instead of offering three crap ones( aka `riding modes`), everyone would be better off imo :) In a way, the 690 is reminiscent of the Yamaha MT09 effort, looking great on paper, light as a feather, big power and torque, mentalist riding position BUT awkward throttle feel and power delivery. I was measuring the MT09 unit against the street triple I had before and where the Triumph motor was sweet as a nut, the Yam unit felt like a salad with way too much vinegar. It`s when manufacturers look to target people new to biking who, bless, don`t know what to expect but get fed some marketing blurb and photos of lifestyle ninjas on bikes and such, just to be willing to put up with bad throttle map, ultra basic suspension, unproven chassis and other bad eggs. Beware of the Juggernaught :)

The 790 responds to hill climbing with relaxed ease-full snoring sounds . . . must be doing something right. I hope other manufacturers market “small” displacement bikes with the same sophistication. We need new / better / more practical indicators of performance than “big ‘n shiny is better”.
