Great review Mr Chops, you and 44th are my 'go to' RUclips channels, thanks for the hard work you put in. I owned a 690 Duke R 2016(TFT dash ), which was the first of the new type engines. It was a fantastic bike, super frugal and never used a drop of oil, even wheeling it through 4th and quick enough for the road, for me anyway. I might just have to go for the SMCR as I do miss my Duke R.
Would you say it would be a good first bike for a beginner? I don't really want to buy a 600cc sport bike because it's a bit too much for a beginner, yet I really dislike riding 300-400cc sport bike variants. It would be mostly used for city commuting and hooning, pretty much no highway use. Would you think that SMC 690 R would be too hard to control? Does it just wheelie under throttle or something like that? I might get myself a DRZ400SM or something similar if 690 proves to be a handful to ride.

Also got my 2019 this february (huge rebate over the 2020 model, while being virtually identical), and i second every point you made. I've done ~6500km by now, also zero oil consumption, and i regularly get >250km per tank (actually close to 290km on the current one). PowerParts seat is a must, Berotec CUMPAN as rev/oil temp display is a great addon. I recommend also getting the PowerParts airbox lid, that adds a lot of grunt in the low end and makes it a much smoother ride a low revs (30km/h zones, anyone?). SP Connect Moto Pro Mount for the smartphone, the classic SHIN YO mirrors mounted over the controls, Zeta Armor Pro with XC plastics... and the Remus Black Hawk for a much improved (while still not annoying) sound.

I have a 2019 SMC R 690 and a Duke 2020 890R. Both great. The Duke 890R IS winning all comparison tests (just slightly) against the best middle weight bike of modern times: The Street Triple. But if I had to have ONE---the SMC R is just the essence of bare bones fun. It walks right by my friend's old skool KTM 990 Adventure as well. FYI: The dash is somewhat "fixed" on the 2021 with a tach and better dash switches and brakes. Rottweiler on this is maybe the best Rotty mod I have felt on ALL/ANY of the 6 KTM's I have put that kit on. A big gob of new power waits right at the twist bit open point off a cruise. It jumps now!
I currently have a 2020 890R also and was thinking about picking up a 21 690 SMC R glad to see you like them both. Which do you end up riding more often?
I absolutely love my ‘19! It easily keeps up with liter bikes in the twisty stuff. The Powerparts seat is a must though. I may trade up to a ‘21 just to get the tach and gear indicator.
I had a 2014 one for 4 months. Bought young second hand with 9000km and no mods other then tail tidy. First ride home a lot of gearbox issues (false neutrals etc no matter how hard or soft i shifted), arrive home and look over it -> Back wheel half of it covered in grime. Cleaned it and looked for leaks but didnt see anything. Next ride same story, look again and find a leak on the shifter, bad O-ring. Back to dealer and replaced it, leak stopped but the gearbox kept having issues (once again false neutrals and going out of gear in acceleration). Sold it a bit later , what a dissapointment. Even my Husaberg fs570 supermotard (which I bought with the money i got for the 690) had less problems.
The anti-wheelie control isn't linked to the TC. It's linked to the modes or maps: mode 1 is roadmode, and won't allow wheelies, whereas mode 2 is SM-mode, and will allow for wheelies (even with TC on).

Anti wheelie? I never knew my bike had that? It's got traction control and abs?? You can disable them by placing a spacer in front of the rear wheel sensor so it can't read signal.
Hi LCR. Bought one after your launch video in Portimao. Love it. It’s my third bike but its the one I always ride for shorter and twisty trips. Have the comfort seat (46 years old and have a 3 level lombar fusion...), Wings Exhaust and some protection parts. Thinking of replacing the 16’’ front sprocket for the 15’’ tooth to try it out. Have it for 4 months and 1.200 miles. I do have oil leaks from the front sprocket oring + from the top of the clutch case near the oil filter. Agree with everything you mention on the video review. After winter will upgrade for DNA filter + open airbox top from DNA + powercommander V with dyno tuning. Please buy it and keep posting videos on the SMCR project!!!
I too had the countershaft leak and updated with the new bushing, o-ring which has been redesigned. Will see if that resolves this minor issue. I do get some seeping from the oil filter cap but not enough to be concerned. Great motor and lightweight adv bike for me.
Can you elaborate on the protection you put on there? I got the crash pads for the axles, and a nice orange skid plate from IBEX, but i'm looking for either a pair of frame sliders (yes, i know the problems they can present) or even better, a whole cage / crash bars.
@@jangrewe Hi. @@ClaudioSubtil1974 Thanks, i was also considering the carbon protectors, but they charge quite a bit for those. Considering the 3 points that the axle sliders and a cage would provide, they may not even be necessary (just my theory, i'd need to check). Thanks also for confirming what i previously heard about the R&G sliders and comfort, so those are definitely off my list then. I just came across these crash guards, and email the manufacturer if they're compatible with the SMC R, too: outbackmotortek.net/product/ktm-690r-adventure-crash-bars/ - that's probably the most comfortable and least flip-lever'y option.
What's reliability been like on the SMCR? Heard some things about them spending a lot of time at dealerships getting fixed? Thought best to hear from an actual owner.
I have an older model which I am in love it the only things I would want different on your bike are: screen display I'd prefer two exhausts like the model of 2007 and some wind protection (like the one i have on my own) because that's a machine that yu can travel for few hundred km
Great revue and I agree totally. I bought my 2020 in March and have had no problems. I did change the seat however. My butt still hurts but at least it's my whole butt.
I own a Hyper 821 SP too, this is the reason I never tried the 690SMC, but I really like it a lot. And never dared to try it, as I‘d had that voice in my head, telling me to decide between my Hyper and the SMC. Is the lighter-weight much nicer on the KTM? The Hyper is quiet a power-smc and I love it, but I assume, the KTM has this extrem nice nimbleness the Hyper doesn‘t have.... am I right???
I used to have one of these (chopped it in for a 2020 KTM SDR) and totally agree with you about the gold wheels. Would’ve finished off the bike perfectly!
Why are so many roads over there only wide enough for 1 vehicle? You seem to have to come to a stop when there is a vehicle coming the opposite direction. Can't imagine how sketchy it is around a blind corner.
My 701sm has been really unreliable, clutch slave went, thermostat went and overheated and salt in the wound the fuel pump just failed all in under 4k miles
I rented a 701 in Colorado it had like 1500 miles on it and every time I stopped at a red light the radiator overflow started pissing all over the ground. My friend had an Duke 390 had problems with the thermostat and bike was overheating. KTM makes really fun bikes, but they clealry aren't among the most reliable bikes. I also had a 990 Superduke which I loved, but it was leaking oil and coolant and had to go to like 3 dealers to finally get it resolved.

also.. my Duke 690R (with the fancy balanced engine) used about 1 litre of fancy pants oil every 1000 miles for its first 10k miles. Now it's run in a bit it seems to use a bit less. Must be a fair bit of variability with tolerances in these LC4s.

Great vid love my 2019 enduro r no oil used at 7k. The only thing lets mine down are occasional false neutrals when changing up with quick shifter. Usually when trying to blat past a row of cars. Agree very revvy engine loves being thrashed. Great fun wet dry or muddy
Yes there is a false netrua but I hardly ever hit it, once you know how to ride the bike (correct lever pressure etc) its fine. My 701 was worse for it, perhaps they have improved it..
G'day Mr Chops.Neat video. Refer to your question, Should you buy one? Answer "Nah". Too expensive for what it is. Riding it on a long journey would be a pain in the Butt, but it looks good. We've been out of lockdown in Victoria for a week now but still limited to a 25 kms radius.
Hi there Mr Chops, do you use the knox riding shirt with inbuilt armour? Whats your thought? Great vid as always, looking forward to you upgrades to this bike. Tnx...
Yes I do, Ive had it for a couple of years its fantastic. Close fitting armour is the way forward. Otherwise if its just in a jacket it just moves on impact.
Great video, hope your having a good weekend. Couple of things I was wondering. Firstly is it a good bike for beginner? I want to buy myself one and I have motorcross to superbike experience but my son who is 19 will be getting his license soon, he’s ridden 125 road legal and my superbike on occasion (private land of course 😅) So will swap over be okay? For me it will be to enjoy super Moto bike again then pass on to my son? Second of all the bike holds its value so well, would you recommend a new one at about 9k so I can run in myself or to buy maybe a 19/20/21 edition? Keeping in mind these are still 7.5-8.5k anyway. KR Nick
I have a 2020 and bought it after watching your videos. I had a slight oil leak from the sprocket seal. Will be upgrading the clutch slave cylinder as a precaution tho. MCN graffix do great graphics kits for these. Just buy it chopsy! At the end of the day you can still sell it later on and get you money back! Then I can copy your mods!! 🤣🤣
Yeah Ive heard the clutch masters can go, I will probably get an Oberon version as a precautionary measure. Sprocket seal is another one Ive heard but not been effected by that either
Well because of the super low piston height the piston weight is super low and the engine has this super nice character. Unfortunately everything comes at a cost. Here it unfortunately is the prevention of combustion gas leakage to the bottom of the engine, because you only have two compression rings and the oil ring(lack of english vocabulary here) this makes the perfect seal impossible, especially on deceleration where there is no real pressure from the top and the piston starts tipping and thus leaking exhaust gas into the bottom end because the exhaust mixture is quite Rich while accelerating there this is quite a lot of fuel that will eventually find it's way into the oil... After about a content of 2% the oil won't be able to do it's job right and proper lubrication won't be possible. This is the reason why so many 690's "just die " after 30000kms on the KTM service schedule because it doesn't account for this dilution. when you change your oil ever 2-3 thousand miles this shouldn't be a major concern as fuel levels need about this mileage to reach the 2% mark. You are right though your engine is properly run in as the oil level stays constant/rises. Which means it doesn't blow by oil as much oil to the top as is being added in by fuel. Oil is the thicker liquid-> better seal than having leakage both ways. There are oils out there that account for this dilution and minimize these effects . One that comes to mind is the Motul 15w60 300v Offroad which is specially designed for these super flat piston engines and thus as additives that keep the oil viscous enough. The higher viscosity because the 690engine is prone to becoming quite hot and because the oil WILL get diluted. The lower rod bearing in the newer engines is a "fluid bearing" or is it viscous bearing which is super dependant on viscosity and the timing chain tensioner needs proper viscosity as well. If the oil isn't thick enough these critical components won't be able to do their job right. Hope this helps. Greetings from Luxembourg All the stuff I mentioned above is tremendously explained in german w/english subtitles here: pirateracingtv
Very very interesting and thanks for explaining so well. So answer is 3k oil changes? This is something I'm going to do anyway as 6k to me is too much for such an engine. So you would recommend the motul 300?
Knox is good stuff Chopsy, you're lucky to get them as a sponsor. KTM690 SMC is a bit of a tool. Think I'd be more tempted by the 690 Enduro R though 😉

I have an older model which I am in love it
the only things I would want different on your bike are:
screen display
I'd prefer two exhausts like the model of 2007
and some wind protection (like the one i have on my own) because that's a machine that yu can travel for few hundred km
Looks great fun! Personally I'd love a 390 SMCR for backroads blasting - it would be more than enough for me I think. Not on the horizon sadly...
Rumours are ktm making 490 smcr
The 690 is just about exciting enough power wise but soon feels slow. Anything less would be painful.
Great revue and I agree totally. I bought my 2020 in March and have had no problems. I did change the seat however. My butt still hurts but at least it's my whole butt.
Which one is better for city hoonin? And a little bit 5-10 km s highway runs weekend.Duke 390 or 690 SMCR?Nice Review tho.
An SMCR by a mile, much more fun and can do motorway stuff 👍
These are our quiet back roads, loads of them around my way. Great fun, normally very quiet and 60 mph speed limits
My 701sm has been really unreliable, clutch slave went, thermostat went and overheated and salt in the wound the fuel pump just failed all in under 4k miles
@Dangerous Dave maybe I got a Friday bike, hopefully after I swap the fuel pump I can get some trouble free miles
Cheers for this Chops, I tend to listen to your videos as audio only in the van at work, you have, without trying, a great way of explaining and detailing your experiences that only a great depth of previous experience can convey, similar to Richi Vida, met you a couple times up NEC, let's hope for a better 2021.👍
Thanks Wayno appreciated, shame no NEC this year eh :-(
@@LambChopRides yes, the annual pilgrimage lol
Awesome review as always LCR, honestly there’s no other reviewer or reviewers that have your unique skill set and vast experience, keep up the hooligan even if you can’t show it 🇨🇦
Thanks matey really appreciated that 👍
Wouldn't some more dual purpose tyres make the bike more versatile in terms of greenlaning?
Yeah of course but if offroad is your thing the Enduro R version is probably more versatile
You want a 21" in front for offroad..makes life much easier ;)
@@LambChopRides Top bike/blaster - just thinking of a way you could make it an urban/ Greenlane blaster. BMW have the R9T Urban GS. Going through some twisties and greenlanes, fire trails on a bike like that - top day.
I want to know how many miles before engine rebuild. Doesn't ktm say like 24k miles before top end?
What about a comparison between 690 and 701 for same engine etc?
nice one chopsi, but where's the duke, hope its progresing.
allright I am selling a Kidney! ;-)
me too
I'll buy your kidneys and get a nice bit of diced steak from the butchers and make a delicious steak and kidney pie......!!!.👍🤪
Tell you what, I'll look after it until the Hypers back on the road....
Deal?
Tempted. Had a 16 model that used a lot of oil-how did you break it in?
also.. my Duke 690R (with the fancy balanced engine) used about 1 litre of fancy pants oil every 1000 miles for its first 10k miles. Now it's run in a bit it seems to use a bit less. Must be a fair bit of variability with tolerances in these LC4s.
I'm in a conundrum between this or the Z900rs but it's just going to be a fun bike with no commuting and maybe one long trip a year... what you think?
Ktm 690smr
Great videos on the KTM 690 smc under the corona times, it’s a really fun bike to ride. Cheers from Sweden.
Thanks! 👍
For my 9 and a half, I want blister-inducing LED lighting and a fancy TFT dash, thanks.
leave all the fun to me then, have fun looking at your fancy tft dash
@@rh_8599 I will, coz I've got a 690 Duke R :P
Will you do a comparison between the smcr and the hypermotard?
Yes that's a very good idea 👍
@@LambChopRides thank you very much, it would help me decide between the hypermotard and the smc
Bought my 2019 ktm 790 duke but now discovered these!. For the fun factor this looks better. Think its worth trading in the duke for this? As long as these can handle the miles and have similar comfort im in.
Just have 2021 yesterday, so easy bike . Great reviw
Yep Knox stuff is excellent, and all British too.
My 701 was worse for it, perhaps they have improved it..
how does a mechanically sound engine "drink" oil?
does it lose oil through the crank case breather? confused.
So, how did you ran it in? Thank you for the review!
I think you said it yourself in the vid a hyper 950 has it all, that's surely worth a purchase 😉
Also the Duke 890 R is less than £10k now.
Great review I have had my 2019 for a year and half and no issues, is the Rottweiler intake worth the money and is the performance noticeable.
Compared to the price of other bikes I think KTM's are priced pretty fair.
How did you break the motor in???? Thanks for any info...
Have a whole video about doing that, do a search 👍
I have had a problem with my 2020 with the rocker cover gasket keeps leaking oil, but other than that it's an hooligan tool.
G'day Mr Chops.Neat video. Refer to your question, Should you buy one? Answer "Nah". Too expensive for what it is. Riding
it on a long journey would be a pain in the Butt, but it looks good. We've been out of lockdown in Victoria for a week now but
still limited to a 25 kms radius.
sweet bike
it looks like a Grom sized bike from some of them camera shots.
great update
Could you have as fun on a SMCR as on a Tuono Factory?
Hi there Mr Chops, do you use the knox riding shirt with inbuilt armour?
Whats your thought?
Great vid as always, looking forward to you upgrades to this bike. Tnx...
Yes I do, Ive had it for a couple of years its fantastic. Close fitting armour is the way forward. Otherwise if its just in a jacket it just moves on impact.
Might have to trade my Yamaha xt660x I wonder if the KTM will be as reliable
If KTMs were made by Honda they would
NO, it will not.....
Yeah sure it will!! :-)
I have a 660R 2015, 30k miles never had 1 issue😅 i dont believe a ktm engine will even last to those numbers.
Hi mate very confused 😕 about to buy 500exc or 690,can you help please 🙏??
Thanks for posting. With proper tires (if available) can it be used as an adventure bike where there are dirt roads?
Yes absolutely it can, or buy the enduro version 👍
@@LambChopRides Are you referring to the KTM 690 Enduro?
*No preload on the front??????????* For real? Same for 2024???
Brilliant chops I hope you keep it thanks from Danny
The 2021 model have the dash upgrade (y)
unless one leaves in the US
I really want a bike
What should I do
I want it cheap
Are there connections to the country?
I want it so badly
Please answer me
I own a 2019, and at about 8000 km the clutch slave cylinder seal went. Otherwise, no problems.
You cannot not love a 690 series in any form.Cheers.JHB-SA.
How do you guys like the 2021 Smc-R?
Great video, hope your having a good weekend.
Couple of things I was wondering. Firstly is it a good bike for beginner? I want to buy myself one and I have motorcross to superbike experience but my son who is 19 will be getting his license soon, he’s ridden 125 road legal and my superbike on occasion (private land of course 😅)
So will swap over be okay? For me it will be to enjoy super Moto bike again then pass on to my son?
Second of all the bike holds its value so well, would you recommend a new one at about 9k so I can run in myself or to buy maybe a 19/20/21 edition? Keeping in mind these are still 7.5-8.5k anyway.
KR
Nick
I have a 2020 and bought it after watching your videos. I had a slight oil leak from the sprocket seal. Will be upgrading the clutch slave cylinder as a precaution tho.
MCN graffix do great graphics kits for these.
Just buy it chopsy! At the end of the day you can still sell it later on and get you money back! Then I can copy your mods!! 🤣🤣
Yeah Ive heard the clutch masters can go, I will probably get an Oberon version as a precautionary measure. Sprocket seal is another one Ive heard but not been effected by that either
Lamb Chop Rides if you do buy it, I think there should be a SMC R meet up for the channel!!
Yes good idea 😁
"this engine hasn't burnt a single drop of oil" that my friend is the magic of oil dilution 😢
690 owner here not hating
Sorry, can you explain that?
Do you mean water from the cooling system is leaking in to the oil? poppycock, not on mine coolant level is upper part of max
Greetings from Luxembourg
All the stuff I mentioned above is tremendously explained in german w/english subtitles here: pirateracingtv
@@GGLiEx good answer mate
Very very interesting and thanks for explaining so well. So answer is 3k oil changes? This is something I'm going to do anyway as 6k to me is too much for such an engine. So you would recommend the motul 300?
Knox is good stuff Chopsy, you're lucky to get them as a sponsor. KTM690 SMC is a bit of a tool. Think I'd be more tempted by the 690 Enduro R though 😉
Yeah very lucky Nick great company, Enduro R is more versatile certainly and only slightly less of a weapon on the streets! 👍👍
My dream bike 😍 will transition from Duke 690 shortly.
Hi. I’m in the market for a 690smcr quick question. Do I go for the 2019 model for £7995 or the 2021 model for £8999 both got 0 miles on and will be registered on a 2021 plate ??
Save a £1000.. its only really a different colour! Slight changes but minimal imo
You can't turn off wheely control? You can't wheely the bike?!
I'd love a brand new bike but have my 05 LC4 and 11 Speed triple. Would I trade both for a 690/701? 🤔 Nahh.
would you ever review the Yamaha xv950
140 kilos must be the dry weight.
Do you prefer this to the 701SM? I've been debating a 701 for use in the Algarve. Maybe the 690 would be better. I am going to watch all your 690 videos.
Same bike really 1990, well both the 2020 models are anyway, older ones some slight differences
I don’t think lock downs are the answer just plain old self accountably , there’s nothing like playing in the dirt
