"A slight panic buy of gas masks" somehow stands out to me more today than it did four years ago...

"...Chris save us" that is the most plaintive cry I've ever seen
I love how Brannan immediately misremembering "bum faced men from Venus" as "bum faced goats from Mars" accidentally worked in his favor because of the Mars Canals stuff.
"Half the wheel is France" has got to be one of my favorite quotes from citation needed.
'its just a piece of card with France on it with an arrow pointing towards it'
I love how the wheel got more and more France as it went on
@@TheSpannerJNR where is that episode

WHAT'S TOM SCOTT'S FAVOURITE COLOUR?
MATTE GREY!
So, Tom Scott's favorite color of small rug dispensed with dubious legality by a friend would be Matt Grey's Grey Market Matte Grey Mats
Eeeyyyy!
You need to be stopped
And naturally, they would be purchased at Matt's Grey Market for Matt Grey's Grey Market Matte Grey Mats
Ok this has to be in the next season!
My dad lived with a French family for a year or so. One night they were having steak, and his French father (not his biological father, but the father of the French family) walked inside, crying, holding a platter of medium-rare steak. When my dad asked what was wrong, his French father told him that he had burnt the steak to a crisp.
it might be too late but please say to your dad's French father that I'm sorry for his loss
You should have told him not to worry, before biting into it.
@@rewrose2838 you're missing the point of the story

Beat me to it
I liked how Gary pointed a the other three AND the camera.
he forgot the camera behind all of them on top of the stove hood but i know it's effectively the same as pointing at his own camera
He's telling *you* to watch it.

"No, he just took his spiritualist in for a tune-up", that genuinely made me laugh out loud. And nice Doctor Who reference, too, "every planet has a North", haha.

To be fair to gary, in india people do eat what he called a "samosa butty" just, call it "samosa pav" where pav translates to bread. So not too far from indian street food there. Yorkshire is essentially india. who knew.
Shivam D In Scotland we sometimes have a roll and tattie scone (double tattie scone if you’re feeling adventurous). That’s a roll with two potato scones on it.
I was wondering what a "batty" was
Well to be fair, samosas in the world outside south Asia also do have equal influence of Pakistan, Bangladesh (Basically the mughal platter) and Sri Lanka (all within the fillings)
Shivam D both like Cricket too
@@teipeu9033 For double carbs there's also the deep fried chipsteak and, heaven forbid for the hat trick, chipsteak butty. I love Scotland, out-Northing the North since the Romans decided to stay out. ;)
It's also technically triple carbs, cause it's a potato filling, a deep fried dough covering and then the bun itself.
Side note, I'm Indian but I had no clue samosa pav was a thing, is this a Mumbai thing?
Dearest, Tom Scott, Chris Joel, Matt Gray and Gary Brennan - I am addicted to your show. I have now watched each episode at least 10 times. No joke. It's getting sad. I need more. I need my fix. Stop screwing around in Antarctica (no doubtedly hugging penguins), or traveling to New York (because you've already hugged a penguin), or cycling w/ a flask of brandy, or spending hours on Tinder and get cracking!
I have just been amazed how quickly and accurately people put out the subtitles
Maybe it's the spirit of Flammarion that did it?
Yeah, it took a creepily short amount of time.
I'm pretty sure that the subtitler has access to the video in advance (see Tom's twitter feed for evidence)
+Madone7 We have a volunteer subtitler for these, who prefers to remain anonymous - they go through the bulk of it in advance and I'm so grateful!
Judging by the tweet about the sassy subtitler, it looks like you're having attitude problems with the citation needed's caption volunteer or temperamental difficulties with the Technical Difficulties subtitles technician.
"It's for the future" and "an audible HA!" had me in tears. I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard. I love everybody on the show!
I feel very inserted.
oh my god! I thought of you when he said that.
too funny
Did you make a channel just for this joke?
I can't tell if you're joking, or don't actually know
did the spiritualist service you too
9:58 If Tom would be drinking alcohol, I am certain he would have downed an entire glass of wiskey or gin&tonic at this very point, just to drown the disappointment and sadness caused by Matt's pun.
But then the follow-up of "It's a rare thing in France" absolutely deserved the silently-awarded Biscuits with such a defeated look on Tom's face.
Hey, just wanted to thank whoever does the subtitles for doing them. Even though I am not hearing impaired, as an American, it helps me catch the words I don't recogniz(s)e.
I think I have always misheard "samosa butty" before.
Surely it should of been "bum faced aliens from Uranus"....
I love it when Tom rolls with the tangents that they take. It takes the show into a very fun direction.
Also, Camille had a brother who founded what is nowadays one of the biggest French book and magazines publishing company and that is named after their last name.
Thank you! I spent the entire episode going, "Flammarion, where do I know that name from?"
It's great binging through these and seeing the evolution of Chris Joel's beard. By the final season it's damn glorious!
"I have a vision of someone who worked in a factory." You're in the North...
It's like that Dara O'Briain bit where the spiritualist asks an audience if they knew anyone called "Mary"... in *Ireland* .
@2:00
I think it worthwhile to point out that there is, in fact, a much-loved manga & anime series about gondoliers on a terraformed Mars; titled Aria.
Jokes about how long to grill meats are a rare medium, well done in this case.
As I watch this I realise that I'm sitting next to a book printed by Flammarion publishers (Les coulises et la création by Cedric Villani and Karol Beffa) glad to see that the name lives on in scientific publishing!
My whole family is still spiritualist, every service i went to i kept thinking "if you want to make me a believer say..." never, in several years did it happen. They say people shouldn't doubt but if they don't doubt and verify how did they claim to be a scientific based religion?! Years latter my dad told me they learnt on some classes they teach there to their workers that humans have spread across earth when it was a pangeia and it happened some 5k years ago. Come on!
Gotta say, Tom, I love this show. It's one of my favorite things on RUclips. The trivia, the facts, the fiction, the subjects, the tangents, it's all gold.
Keep doing what you're doing, all of you guys. I will always look forward to the next episode of Citation Needed.
"Half of this episode doesn't make sense!"
"It will do in the future..."
Discovering there's a new episode of Citation Needed is like putting on a jacket you've not worn for a while and discovering there's half a packet of Jelly Babies in the pocket :-) or is it just me?

Old jelly isn’t good, thoug
I still watch these everyday
"Every planet has a north"
Is that a cheeky doctor who reference
Looks like it to me. Gotta love the ninth doctor.
everything's a reference to something if you try hard enough to join the dots
Since RUclips now has the "play at 0.25x"-feature, I can confirm that Tom says "...for partic good answhiches"
"Everybody has a north" In America we have a south
Actually he says "LOTS of Planets have a North", which for some reason, gives me this vision of Tennant's Doctor confronting his past self saying that by naming a planet that for whatever reason (Geological or cultural, or whatever) doesn't have a north.
Just wait a few thousand years, that South will become the North. (Geomagnetically speaking, of course.)
My current obsession is Doctor Who so seeing this quote in the show made me very happy.
I mean that does imply that America's got a north too, don't it?
South America has a north.... North America.
I love Citation Needed so much. It's unfortunate the seasons are so short, but it's understandable.
i have been quoting “MILD DISQUIET” for years now
You guys should share the Wikipedia article being discussed, in the video description
Considering that the title of the article is in the title of the video...
Its not that im not able to find the page.. but still..
I thought its common practice to do that..
I spot a Gopro on the extractor hood :P ~goes back to see if it's there in other videos!~
Superb as usual! I was absolutely hollering, too TOO funny! Actually took a good 25 minutes to watch 'cause I had to keep rewinding bits :P
Had a kinda shite day today and was sorta hoping there'd be a new citation needed to cheer me up since I hadn't checked in about a week, but then I remembered this was the last of the season. Ah well, it was a wondrous season. Count this as my repeated vote that I did, in fact, sign up for this.
"Every planet has a north" - Every episode has a Doctor Who reference somewhere!
Tom's "i'm sorry, what?" cracks me up for some reason
"PANIC!"
"Eh, to a certain extent."
"MILD DISQUIET!"

I am forever grateful to this episode for introducing me to the paradigm of cooking prowess that is the Samosa Butty 😂😂😂😂😂
1:16 I think Tom's voicebox tried to restart there before he could push the button saying 'Cancel Update'.
Enjoying the War of the Worlds reference, I'm hearing the rest of this episode in Richard Burton's voice.
The MSL (Curiosity) rover, when folded in the storage configuration, is the size of a Mini Cooper. When I was an intern at JPL, I saw a photo of the aeroshell on a Mini as a size comparison.
"No, he took his spiritualist in for a tune up." ROFLMAO
Fun fact, I watch literally everything in 2x speed whenever possible because most videos go too slowly for me to be engaged otherwise. This series is the only thing I could watch on 0.75 speed and still be perfectly content!
Maybe it's the accents that are slightly harder to parse quickly, the density of the knowledge being packed into little space, or the many references that take a moment to get... in any case, I love listening at normal speeds for once
May I suggest subtitles? It helps understanding.
@@oxybrightdark8765 ah I have subtitles for everything possible on anyway. I can understand everything just fine at normal 1x speed, it's just at 2x speed when things get a bit too fast to keep up with!
I've been a fan of yours for a couple years now and I wanted to say that this series it one of the most entertaining I've found on RUclips.
Keep up the good work, I look forward to more content!
Mild disquiet! That line got me.

As far as I know the canals are miss translation from French. The just meant lines but when translated to English it came out something artificial.
I heard Italian, where the word meant "channels" (artificial or natural, straight or not).

Nearly 7 years and no love for taking your spiritualist to be serviced because "the readings were off"?!! Gary Brannan is indeed my favourite Gary Brannan.
Very funny stuff as always! Sad to see it's the last one :(
Just watched The History Guy's video on Halley's Comet, and just had to come back and watch this again.
4:15 - Tom trying to get the conversation back to the topic.
4:19 - not a chance

That's it for season 5? ;( MOAR!
It took me WAY too long to get Matt’s “well done” joke
Good to see more subbed videos, even if I don't need the subtitles personally.
i know its hard for them to make these epsoides but i hope that sometime in the future that they make a podcast in this format.
Best one yet, and I'm only 5 mins in. 'Cubism' cracked me up hahaha

I'd say to Flammarion, not a good enough reason to use 'impregnate'...
My Grandma was called Edith..... and I'm from Dewsbury, a mill town in the north!
I like how Chris is much more still than the other 2 during the introduction.
I wonder if Flammarion's cyanogen scare is where Conan Doyle got the idea for "The Poison Belt"?

With the canals... I heard It was a mistranslation of canali, meaning channels in Italian... I may be very wrong tho
"Martian canal boat dwellers, beaming their thoughts down!"
Best RUclips title ever.
we need this but 1 hour long! 15 mins is to bloody short!
It’s like the Pheonix night medium
please make a podcast version of this, it'd be preferable, tbh :P
