The real question is why Patrick Olivelle felt the need to say temples didn't exist before 500 CE? Why does it matter even if he was right, which he is not? Why did he say this exactly before the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishta ceremony?

Temple construction in Vedic period was not required as different incarnations of Gods and Godesses were present in Vedic period. Before the development of temples people started creating idols of Gods and Godesses from stones and soil just to carry forward the description and history of their Gods and Godesses who they worshiped at that time then they started developing temples for social gathering and worship their Gods and Godesses together for spiritual needs and to teach their traditions and culture for the next generation to carry it forward to be remembered for a long time.

Near my town there is a stone temple called as "Madhukeshvara temple " in Banavasi Karnataka. It was capital of Kadamba kingdom... They built this temple in 350 AD. But stories there were pooja happening but in small mantap from the times of Shatavahana Dynasty
As a history student this is just a view of one historian and another will come with other perspective. History flows in same way. There is nothing permanent. So just a normal day in discussion. And i am always eager to know all perspectives.

(2) Influence of others religious architecture flourishing in that region.
(3) Foreign influences
(4)Local landscape and availability of material

If we use scientific stone age dating for the Bhimbetka Cave, this will secure World's top 3 (most likely to be 1st among all) in ranking of oldest ancient architecture of human evolutions from stone age era. What this proves. This is proud and sad itself as we never claimed it.
The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as the historic period.

India is a vast country and and culture going back to more than 10000 years(even more) however you can't deny India also faced internal wars and regular invasion from bandits from outside. In aftermath of war the towns and its temples might have been razed to ground and thus all previous infrastructure gone away. You will only find things if you dig deep enough and no one can determine how deep rhat will be. Any structures surviving 500AD bench mark doesn't mean that there were no temples before that only thing is no one has looked hard enough to find evidence. Apart from that every thing needs to be fit in the timeline set by western scholars and anything not compatible with their perspective it down right marked as unauthentic.
We may not find a temple that was built before 100AD etc. But we have literature called Aagama Shastra which deals with construction and the rituals to be practised in a temple. These literature seem to be as old as Vedas. So the idea was there long before the temples were built perhaps?

Even Indus valley civilization had temples. But the confusion actually arises because when people of the Indus valley migrated to other settlements, those temples were not abandoned unlike the nearby other structures. It is because a temple is a divine structure, an abode of the deity. Therefore, those temples were maintained and repaired over millennia, until finally, the islamic invaders came and destroyed them. Dude. One firepit and one symbol doesn't mean everything around it was vedic. Earliest Veda rigveda is believed to be composed between 1500-1200 Bce. The earliest surviving manuscript is from around 100 BCE.

There are Brahmanical temples as at Besnagar elliptical temple, and the Heliodorus pillar about 110 BCE (at the same place) was installed near a Vasudeva temple.

Vedic period had not temple only hawans then came upnishads which debated vedas and decoded them and became ultimate answers and then temples and idols came during puranic period… that’s what was taught in the schools… that’s why arya samaj follows only hawan Vidhi of worship and no idols …
Atharva veda clearly mentions some shlokas about tantra sadhana..althought tantra is an extension of that plus tantra along with agamas are also considered as shruti.
That's because construction techniques that survive 1000s of years are not developed in that time and our temples under went upgrades in every 100 years with new techniques and this is the reason we didn't have surviving temple structures of before 500 AD
