- In his latest effort to salvage modern surf culture from the vulnerable adult learner and websites pandering to the sport's wreckers, Chas Smith attacks the "surf skate".
It is a device designed to mimic the feeling and movement of surfing on land. It is characterized by a special front truck that allows for tighter turns and more fluid carving, enabling riders to pump the board to generate speed without pushing off the ground.
"No phenomena is so tainted nor so ugly as the surf skate phenomenon where we have fully capable men and women wiggling down streets, wiggling down sidewalks," says Smith. "I don't know where it came from and I don't know where it's going. But it is here now and, of course, The Inertia has reviewed the best of them. Shall we read?" Спорт
I grew up skating in SF in the 90s, when it was a Mecca for street skating. I quit skating in about 98ish. I started again 2 years ago. A buddy had a SurfSkate, and I hopped on it. It felt so good, and because of SurfSkating, I was able to actually transition back into regular skating after 25 years of zero skating at all. I agree, there’s a lot of sham-wow wannabe’s on SurfSkates acting like tutors when they suck themselves…kinda like when you hear a kook trying to explain surfing to another kook in the lineup. So I get why it’s hated. But for someone older trying to rekindle their love for skateboarding, it’s a great place to start, and if you know how to surf it will also help your surfing and reflexes. What I dislike more than a kook on a SurfSkate is a kook on a foam board snaking the shoulder. My view, if a SurfSkate keeps someone out of the surf lineup, or helps them advance out of being in my way often, then it’s a good thing.
What’s the difference between a surf skate and a skateboard?
@@joeblow1942The Trucks are constructed in a way that lets you Turn in a much tighter radius than with normal skate trucks.
@@christopherpattberg2431 At the beginning the girl is on one of those weird wiggly boards but the rest of them look like normal skateboards.
@@joeblow1942 The ones that are mostly used for Surftraining are not the ones like the „weird“ one at the beginning. Google „YOW Meraki Trucks“ for a better example of a Surfskate Truck with a Spring System that enables tighter turns. If you don’t get a closeup view it might be hard to tell the difference at first glance.
I surfskate because I can’t skateboard for shit! Plus I’m old and I can’t afford to get hurt.
I use to make skateboards with 2 by 4's and roller skates (yes that's how old I am). Up and down hills was about it. Skate boarders now should be banned to Utah and the beginning age to ride them, maybe about 50 and up. You get a warning for the first butt-wiggle, and 10 hours of community service for the second offense.
The old Sector 9 Ala Moana with flexible bamboo deck and double king pin trucks at each end. I think they call those trucks ‘Sidewinder’ from Independent? You get your momentum from your back leg/foot not front which probably makes this old classic still the best ‘surf-skate?
The Sidewinder truck doesn't come close to a whole bunch of better trucks.
Chas. Either love him or hate him.
Thought it was Jon Waters
k this Chas character really hates Surfing and Surf Skating. What is the Wine pairing for the evening?
i just want to ride a blade on 1 ft mush to relieve my constipation
I love your books, Chas.
As a skater this really resonates
In the late 50’s, I tried one, but didn’t like pavement crashes so gave it up … hating it back then.
Hope this channel gets renamed "Chas Smith Hates Surf Skating"
Disagree , have you tried a SmoothStar ? It’s rad . Some people have no style but that’s a different matter , the truck is actually really innovative. I grew up skating and got pretty good , and can surf well.. surf skating is almost its own thing . Waterborne adapter is trash. Go try it before judging
Don't agree about the Waterborne, more versatile than the Smoothstar, the Carver CX system is also more versatile and a great surfskate truckset.
@@chrysr7773 Ah that's cool! I really liked the waterborne first year I was using surf skate, but then I started doing more around the city skating and pump track and found it not responsive enough. The Carver CX I find too springy so doesn't really feel like surfing to me, I still have fun on it though. I really liked the Carver C5 for a while when I was doing more bowl skating on a normal deck. ... It's fun to try different ones out and see what works. I have actually found the surf skating to improve my surfing just lately, versus before felt more like another form of skating. I found a lot of nice banks around so can do more cutbacks/snap style practice on bank vs flat. What type skating are you doing most?
I hate surfing too. Hence, I'm gonna slap some trucks on an epoxy waterboard with kick tail and call it a skate surf. Skater's will thus be able to practice their skating while surfing. Blow the wheels, throw wheel, snap, crack, hack and layback those wheels. Meant for sandlocked islanders with reefs that bareley run dry.
Oh my…. Dudes that are too scared to actually skate, grind, you know the real deal. Jeezus save us from these wriggling idiots
Skateboards were originally invented to simulate surfing when I was a little kid, so the surfskate in nothing new.
Skateboards have been evolving for 60 years now and that has created many different fun disciplines within the sport.
The wheel is one of man's greatest inventions and we never seem to lose interest in finding different ways to configure a rolling device.
There seems to be no group of people more egocentric about what they do than surfers. There are lots of sports/physical endeavors and many of them take practice, skill and talent...never do I hear the amount of whining than I do from surfers.
MD, LSD and Marvin Gay, are the best way to flow-on, on the flat days!
I love surfskating, surfing and bodyboarding.....i have accepted the fact that i never have been and never will be as 'cool' as you. Plus i wear a helmet too. What a kook i am.....oh well. Im still having fun and not hurting anyone. Thats the main thing eh.....
I thought that was what skateboards are for. I don't "get" it. Is this just another way for companies to get our money?
Surfskateing is just another branch on the surfing tree...like foiling or snowboarding...thanks to mother Surfing
VALs... just facken surf off your back foot right???
Not easy getting people's attention when there is so little of interest to say. Gotta milk it for all its worth.
Surf skates are weird.
Yes they are weak
Why exactly are they weak?
What’s next, hating on snow skates?!
Seriously though, you want to surf, then surf. Want to skate? GET A SKATEBOARD AND BE AWESOME
I would take you a lot more seriously if you were in a seersucker suit
Surfing and Skating go hand in hand. Surfing started the modern skate revolution. As a young grom in the 70's from San Diego we regularly skated the local drainage ditches and at the Community Concourse imitating legends like Larry Bertleman, Jeff Hackman and Gerry Lopez. We lived to Surf, Skate during flat spells, and Golfed when it was raining. This lifestyle is about as Core as it gets. I do enjoy your endless sarcasm though. lol
