„Bist Du bei mir“ (If Thou Be Near) is taken from the Second Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. She married the widowed Bach 1721 in Köthen and gave up her career as singer. She cared for his four children of his first marriage and gave birth to 13 own children of whom 7 died at very young age. Anna Magdalena outlived her husband 10 years and died 1760 as depleted widow in Leipzig . „Bist Du bei mir“ is one of the most touching compositions in musical history. The text was written by an unknown poet. Bach fervently set the words into music: „Bist du bei mir, geh’ ich mit Freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh’. Ach, wie vergnügt wär’ so mein Ende, es drückten deine lieben schönen Hände mir die getreuen Augen zu!“ English translation: If thou be near, I go with joy To death and to my rest. O how pleasant would my end be, If your fair hands Would close my faithful eyes. Bach began to write the Notebook in 1725, collecting arias and songs that are listed as numbers 508 to 518 in the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV). According to newer sources, BWV 508 „Bist Du bei mir“ (If Thou Be Near) traces back to a setting by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690-1749).
I preformed this in front of the regional judge for the state Solo and Ensemble competition, and at the time I was going through a break up so my singing was very emotional. When I was finished he said he had never heard someone sing the second verse the way I did, and asked me to do it again. I felt belated. I later on won a 2 (basically second place) in the state competition.
A 2? Even though he told you that?
@@naomicarbajal6635 in the regional I got a 1, but in the state competition I got a 2 becuase when I finished off the song I was too short of breath and it cause my vabrado to be too shakey, i lost my breath sadly
What bpm is this?

@@sydneyswope5537 Listen to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, the slowest version I heard which is extremely hard to sign.
MY UNCLE WHISTLE THIS HE WAS PARALISED TILL HIS NECK THANK YOU
My junior high school daughter was singing this as I came home one day. My German was good enough to understand it. I was knocked out. For a school presentation. She doesn't speak German.
I will sing it tomorrow on a competiton! Hope for winning the first place
Good luck!
@@OleksandrYushchuk thank you! I won first place in baroque cathegory!
Jesus, Is the Lord and in this song by Bach I feel His presence and calmness.... and peace......God´s Brilliance shines thruogh
This song still lives rent free in my head and was the sing that made me love opera music
Indeed Brava! Ook erg sterk met de begeleiding.
Thank You 🙏
Performed this in school choir im a German high school as a teenager. I have never quite forgotten how I feel a lump in my throat each time I hear or sing it that was 58 years ago
.
I remember singing this with my choral group in school when I was in 8th grade. While everyone else found the lyrics difficult, I found them beautiful and fun to pronounce, seeing as I don't speak German at all. I loved this song and every once in a while I'll start singing it. It must've left some sort of impact on me because even after 5 or 6 years, I still remember it. Truly beautiful
Yup, same for me too, I found the lyrics easier to sing than others did, and the meaning of the lyrics is beautiful
Same here. Remember hearing it at a solo ensemble an I thought she was saying beef stew by mir
@@Goonie02 😂😂😂
It's truly remarkable. Although I haven't performed it as a singer, I play it as a trumpet player, and it's beautiful. I can also relate to you as I had the same experience with other pieces, where certain choristers found the German difficult, whereas I found it remarkable, and masterful.
I am French and knows the german language well. I find german very good when sung. Particularly with classical music. It is as good as italian, at any rate !
Impossible hearing to you guys without sobbing in tears.
Excelente performance
My daughter was so excited when I played this for her because she’s practicing this song in her choir, she said that if she tried to sing that high she’d sound like a sweeping mouse 😂
« If you're with me, I'll go with joy » is a Aria from Gottfried Heinrich Stölzels Opera Diomedes, which premiered in 1718. The « Aria » is known as « Bist du bei mir » (BWV 508), a version for voice and continuo, which can be found as No. 25 in the 1725 music booklet for Anna Magdalena Bach. Stölzel and Bach were in the same places at different times and shared knowledge, but whether they met in person can only be assumed. The Bach family copied dozens of Stölzel pieces in their public and private musical practices with or without Stölzel's approval. History will tell according to the research of musicologists. This composition will be orchestrated later by Thomas Frost. *Lucien*
Aria:
« If you are with me, I will go with joy
die and rest.
Oh, how happy my ending would be,
your beautiful hands closing
my faithful eyes. »
*Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel*
This version is magnificient, I love it, the technique, the prononciation. Everything is perfect !
Holy Scheisse, what a voice Ann Shumarina has to really fill out this song from Herr Bach. I know this song from being transcribed for instrumental quartets. I have never heard the melody sung before now... I'm in Awe.
I sang this with my choir in 2013 during nationals at Universal Studio and we won first place and grand champion. :D
Absolutely brilliant. Right pace, fantastic musicians and the voice cut to perfection for this marvelous song. Thanks!
Thans for doubling the base at the final accord. That was great!
Perfekte Version..
One of my fave pieces and such a beautiful rendition.
Indescribably beautiful. Fits so well with brass accompaniment.
Stunning beauty in sight and sound. Excellent!
I sang this Song in choir a few years back, and I've been looking for it ever since. I finally found it and I cry. This was one of my favorite pieces to sing with my group.
Bro did like everyone who was ever in choir sing this song??
perfect! excellent! wondeful! trompets are fantastic.. strong voices of the trompets and the wonderful voice of Anna Shumarina is perfect way to interpret Bach's state of mind...
Absolutely Brilliant.
Thank You!
I liked it. It is beautifully sung and natural. Not over acted and she used how power selectively. One of my favourite recordings of this.

LES MUSICIENS FORMIDABLES
One of the best interpretations of a great melody. When I heard it I could cry 😢
I always go back to this version. Beyond the technical perfection of both the music and the voice, you just feel it when you listen to it. This version conveys so well a message. Thank you so much for letting us having that experience with you!
Wonderful voice, timbre. Absolutely amazing tone and vibrato! Bravo, Anna!
The singer is not named Anna or Bach. J.S. Bach's 2nd wife Anna Magdelena Bach copied the music in a notebook that the composer famously covered throughout his life. The singer here is mentioned in the description. Her name is Anna Shumarina.
One of most beautiful performances of that piece. Beautiful voice. Musicans are also doing graet job
Superb. The Setting. The Brass. The Delivery. Everything. All Beauty.
Thank you, Ms. Shumarina and company.
Basso continuo e cantante, meravigliosa!!!
It's nice having you hearting comments in other languages it's like you know all the languages :)
Ohnehin schönes Lied!
In one word Brava!
Eine beeindruckende klare und frische Stimme !
Danke!!!
Beautiful ❤❤❤ the stunning warm but powerful voice together with the brilliance of the brass 😍🎶🎵👌🏼👌🏼
Not by Bach . In the notebook in the handwriting of Anna Magdalena Bach , without mentioning the composer.
Radiant performance with beautiful high notes !
Fellow RUclipsrs are calling Stölz the composer from a 1718 opera called Diomedes. But doesn't it sound very much like J. S. Bach's style?
Fantastic! Great voice, good tempo and nice arranged.
Wonderful voice, interpretation and arrangement! Superb!
Sencillamente, una maravillosa interpretación.
Nada más que añadir....
This song is the best of all because Anna Magdalena Bach has got a very beautiful voice!!!
Wie wohltuend diese warme Sopranstimme. Gefällt mir sehr. Danke
Stunning: the brass, the voice, the setting. (How could anyone give a thumbs down to this?? Really?)
Beautiful. Thankyou

Zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh.
Ach, wie vergnügt wär so mein Ende,
Es drückten deine schönen Hände
Mir die getreuen Augen zu.
Thanks. I would appreciate a translation.

Indescribably wonderful.
Oh so beautiful! Wonderful sound, so open. And the brass are great, too.
Fantastic !!

But not composed by Bach !

……….
Be Thou with me, then I will go gladly
unto [my] death and to my rest.
Ah, how pleasant would be my end,
if your dear hands shut my faithful eyes!
singing is brilliant!
Top, beautiful ……
she looks up when she sings high notes as if looking to the heavens to help her hit the high notes
I love this so much
How beautiful! And she's amazing too!
I am learning this to hopefully go onto AGT in the next few years
Nice 👍

@survivaltest 370 Wurde 1718 komponiert in Bayreuth ! ( Stolzel ). 1717 - 1718 War Stolzel Kapellmeister in Bayreuth.
Sorry. But this a song about dying, Not something for such projecting trumpet. I think the version with Shigeko Hata is much better as more subdued..
Que hermosa cancion💙
Fantastico! Voce meravigliosa.
O coral que dirigi cantava essa música
Simplesmente linda
Wonderful version
Sencillamente Impresionante. Tiene una técnica perfecta.
A beautiful voice.
