- If you had told me years ago that I would consider a Torchlight game to be disappointing, I would have laughed you out of the room. And yet, that time has come, and as someone who holds Torchlight 2 to be their favorite Diablo-style game, let’s talk about why Torchlight 3 fails to live up to that.

as a t2 fan, this opens my eyes. I currently don't have the capable device to play t3 anyways, so occasionally watching reviews help me know what's coming for me. thanks a lot for sharing!
I played t3 already..tried forged lightning build. the control was real pain.clunky.

TL3 does have a few good things (manequins to hold builds/sets), the fort idea, etc. But the execution was so poor it just died. Which is sad because with work it could have been good. But as is, keep playing 2.

Amazing video Dr. Honestly, I played through the series from the first game last month and I was really looking forward to completing the game and then moving on to the next game or trying a new class. Touchlight 2 was awesome an even more so with the mods. Then when I played Touchlight 3 and they removed the weapon swap and save point mechanic, I was like "What were they thinking?" Again, awesome vid and keep up the great work.
Picked up tl3 for 10 bucks. So far, it's good. Not sure why everyone hates it...though I'm not far at all yet.

@@jayprichard2024 T3 for 10 bucks is decent value and there's fun to be had, but not everyone bought it while on sale. Remember that T2 was an amazing little game that launched at 20 bucks. You can see how some people might find that a mediocre 40 dollar sequel to an amazing 20 dollar game feels like a disappointment at best and a rip-off at worst. I speak from my own subjective point of view though, I honestly still hope you at least get to enjoy T3. Cheers.
@@tapsofosiris3110 I don't disagree. People are calling it garbage though and even at 40 bucks, it's not a total waste of money. There are choices, content, and fun to be had albeit slightly over priced.

I don't think any other game knocked this game out. I think this game did a good job of knocking itself out. I don't know what market they were wanting to pander to. Probably the China market at the time but it definitely was not the sequel fans of the first two games were wanting.
Torchlight 3 what a weird, quirky game lol...just never reached a good place and think even the developers had no idea where they were heading when they got so far in and called it a wash. If I had to guess what went wrong it was probably just time constraints and over hyped pressure to make something the fans would respect and love but it ended up being so strange...from the weapon sets and skill trees being off balance and many other problems. Will say the rail master class was pretty fun and worked out well with train cars acting like a summon and some of pets and their skills were pretty interesting. All in all just way off balance and unfortunate that sold us an overhyped mess but at least they did acknowledge their blunders with a reduced price tag "like we tried but couldn't pull it off here you go."
the moment i saw the trailer of torchligh III i knew there was something wrong even though i didnt play the game yet.
gamer instinct really helps kudos to this video to confirm my feelings about the torchlight III so be it ill be playing torchlight II still...
I finally just gave this game a shot. I gotta say making skills keyed off of weapon damage and being a percentage of it was stupid. There is no reason not to pick the heaviest hitting weapon because the attack speed of the weapon does not impact the skill use speed in any way. I found myself in awe of how bad this design was because it incentivized me to not play around with different weapons and just look for the highest damage which outside of rare drops was always some big 2 handed weapon that was ungodly slow but it didn't matter because my skill had the same attack speed.

I'm curious how Torchlight: Infinite will play out. I know it has a much different art direction but I'm hoping the gameplay is at least solid. Would love to hear your opinions on that game.
Wait, Torchlight 3 actually released? Huh, didn't hear a peep about it.
Torchlight 3 didn't struggle cause other releases. It struggled due to poor optimization, an insane amount of bugs (some gamebreaking), a progression system the devs couldn't decide on, a bunch of server issues, multiple rollbacks and wipes, etc. It was a shoddy game either trying to cash out on the franchise, or was so poorly managed it couldn't be anything but bad.

Yeah, I recently tried playing both TL 2 and 3, and I've played a lot of ARPGs, Torchlight 2 is significantly better.
Thanks for the waypoint system warning, that was what made me hate "remnant from the ashes", and if they keep this shit on the 2* game i'm definitely not playing that shit, so yeah, i guess its time to go back to Torchlight 2 again... ;/

Talked about torchlight 1 and 2, breath of the wild, hades AND HYRULE WARRIORS 2 before getting to the review, get to the fucking point.
I just got TL3 on my Nintendo Switch for just $5 on a sale today, totally worth it at this price and lots of fun. Would not pay $40 full price though.
"He stopped playing diablo 2 due to not having save anywhere". I went through something like that recently with grim dawn. You could go back to town quickly but turning off the game didn't let you teleport back to your player placed rift. Had to do something with the kids all of a sudden, realized I would have to go through that whole section again (conflagration's secret area behind the dynamite) and never turned the game back on. Really happy with the torchlight 2 save and load system! Just started playing for the first time!
I just picked up grim dawn around a week ago. Its a great game but has many bad /weird decisions in it. The no save / waypoint save system is one i completely agree with. Grim dawn also has some pretty huge areas and considering its mainly a single player game i don't understand why we cant just save the exact spot we are in. Secondly the skills have extremely vague descriptions. Most of them writing a small story about the skill origin instead of what the actual skill does. I was so confused with my first character i spent around 40-50 mins just trying to grasp what each class / skill is actually going to be not to mention the combinations later on lvl 10 ...
Well anyways i still enjoy grim dawn its a great game. Eventually i made a cold-dot Infiltrator ( Nightblade+Inquisitor ) the true definition of "glass cannon mage" :D
i personally love this game a lot , playing witha gf that dont know much of gaming and isnt really good , this one is pretty good for that , and its less dark like diablo and poe , and the art direction is very nice for most of the ppls , im sad ppl dont like it , and the dev droped it :(
i agree I really want to make a video talking about how amazing this game is to me. (As someone who started torchlight back in the days where it was an xbla game and someone who didnt care much for the gameplay changes made in torchlight 2 (though i do plan on revisiting it at some point

@@80Mrblueeyes one I don't play these games extremely hardcore I play an hour or two at a time and there is always stuff to work to the classes are unique and the focus on your fort gave me the enjoyment I had of having the central location in torchlight 1.

I just found out about Hob a few days ago (magical, refreshing, so tenderly crafted!), and I was going to buy it full-price until I realized a company closed Runic down apparently "to focus more on online-centered games". ...Now, since I can't support Runic directly, I'll be getting Hob & Torchlight 2 (NOT 3!) when they're on drastic markdown... :(
You got most of it right but some other info. The game was at one point in fact cancelled between fronters and when they decided to rename it 3. They also didn't have damage numbers until the QA team forced them to put it in. The high ups were set on the side way progression that hurt all other parts of the game development. And QA told them all the time every week about the emery's being bullet sponges

Is this game worth purchase? Not full price just a nice sale price. Its a shame they put someone on after the developer got brought. Hopefully embracer makes a 4 and doesn’t make the same mistakes

This game fucking sucks. I try to build a electrode onslaught and basic sneko attack sharpshooter and it crashes my sound and then my game.
I might give it a go. I tend to play games like this like an arcade game. I'll play through the story, do some end game dungeon stuff, but I won't spend too much time getting the "ultimate best gear". Just isn't my thing. No point really after beating the story. But I'll get an itch to replay games like this, and just go through the story and do a few end game dungeon stuffs and take a break from it again.

This game let me down so badly. I was in love with the Devs and the way they made Torchlight 1 and 2 and the fact that they stuck with the same price and never faltered to cash grabs or freemium practices. I loved the fact that even though Diablo 3 wasn't what it was supposed to be, Torchlight 1 and 2 met all expectations and then some! I was one of the biggest fans!
But this is a travesty. Nay, a tragedy! Moving onto mobile and going freemium with microtransactions, failing and then renaming as Torchlight 3? Huge disappointment.
And worst thing yet, after one of the biggest fails in gaming history the devs ABANDONED the game having not learned a single thing and letting us all down. The game is 7 pounds right now on Steam. Extremely cheap. But even that won't bring me to play it or have my friends buy it and play it with me.
Wow. Such passion. The game is good, well worth 15 to 20 bucks. I just grabbed it for 9.99 usd. Biggest fails in gaming history? Not even in that same universe...Torchlight games are good, but they aren't AAA mainstream games. Battlefront 2, Madden, Fifa (anything EA), and the latest greatest all time letdown Cyberpunk! Those are disasters. Nobody cared much at all about the torchlight series. I'll also say again, tl3 is not a bad game. It is well worth snagging on sale.

i was part of the beta process it was kind of a shitshow. i thought the new system in frontiers was great, but all the other stuff they added like relic weapons an shit user interface was just super out of touch to a torchlight game. there fix for each character having a different type of "mana" never fixed mana as well. outside of "mobility skills" you cant have a spendable resource and cooldowns at the same time they are inevitability the same exact things, so have one or the other but never both, except for mobility skills .

I really love Torchlight 2, played it for years with different mods, especially SynergiesMOD which is imo the best one i tried out.
When Torchlight: Frontiers came out i lost all hope for a good continuation for the Torchlight franchise, and it seems like that was right as Torchlight 3 is seemingly a VERY watereed down Torchlight 2 with better graphics and the atrocity that is Torchlight Infiinite is just a mobile cash-grab from the looks of it, albeit a good MOBILE game, it certainly does not hold up to PC standards.

Fwiw, TL3 isn't bad per se. It just isn't actively good. It was better than Van Helsing or those other C-Tier arpg's.
It is such a disappointment that this game sucks . I put around 200 hours into Torchlight 2 and that doesn't even count the time I spent offline playing it. I really, really enjoyed that game, Embermage was so much fun to play. I liked all the other classes as well but spent the most time playing Embermage. I already knew Torchlight 3 was trash way before it ever came out so I was lucky to not have wasted any money on the game. Just wanted to see what your thoughts were on it, and yep... I figured correctly. Cool video man.
Well shit, I just bought it last night on a whim because I liked TL2 and I really wanted a new game for my switch. It's ok so far playing the robot because he has the machine gun in the chest.

Some people love Mousou games like the Warriors series. Hyrule Warriors is just one of many iterations of the genre. If you love Zelda like many of us do and have grown up with the games in the 80s, 90s and 2000s then there is no reason you wouldn't want to play it. Same goes for Fire Emblem that's also got it's own Mousou style game. Dynasty Warriors, Orochi All Stars, heck even pure anime such as Fate Extella series exist in the Mousou Genre. Consequently, there are also people like you that haven't grown up with Zelda and games like Dynasty Warriors and haven't played it back in the day, but you are part of an extremely small minority. Both Mousou genre and Zelda series are big.
@@RobertFierce I grew up with the Zelda series and I’ve been playing Fire Emblem since the GameCube. Nostalgia doesn’t make the Dynasty Warrior formula any less boring.

trying to look for reviews for this before i make a purchase but before even the video starts, just looking at the gameplay is already disappointing. why does this look so bad? this was supposed to be a 2020 game but it looks way before torchlight 2 which was 8 years ago before this game.
this is like the diablo 3 of the franchise which is poetic since both 2nd installment of franchises are the best and 3rd are the worst. in TL2 much like diablo 2, there's still sense of differentiating the enemy, they don't blend in with the rest so there's still an excitement on killing mobs. in d3, i just don't care as long as i snowball the whole level.
Max Schaefer abandoned T3 to rot!! I just can't believe that Max Schaefer, one of the founder of Runic game himself, yet also make Torchlight, abandoned T3. It's sad to see Torchlight 3 state like this, heck the problem with T3 also have the same problem with Diablo 3. You know how D2 fanbase don't like D3 don't have skill points system anymore? Sorc. Sage. Druid . Warrior. Berserker. Ranger. Scout. Cleric. Priest. Rouge alchemist exct duelist fencer necro warlock lich sub classes that really narrow down play style but don’t make the originals irrelevant game could of been great

Torchlight 2 managed to do fine coming out at the same time as Diablo 3, I think Torchlight 3 wasn't hampered so much by Hades or Hyrule Warriors as much as it was by just being a bad game. Granted, Diablo 3 was a garbage fire on release, but it was still a BIG deal.
All they had to do was make a path of exile style torchlight game. TL3 feels like a first game in a series made by a bunch of amateur’s.

TL3 was somehow boring, the characters felt like a downgrade from TL2. I think there was just better opportunities and synergies in TL2 :P

@@augustino7529 I am least concerned with it or any game being predatory. I have spent zero real world currency in any recent( spanning approximately 13 years) multiplayer games. I am only concerned with 3 things. Character upgrade and game mechanics. And unofficial penalties within the game because of being f2p. So far, Torchlight Infinite has interesting gameplay and mechanics and I have not faced any problem within the game save for one bug which I reported. It's in beta right now. I intend to enjoy it until it lasts.

That game is sitting at almost 90% positive on the recent reviews on steam. I kinda want to give it a go once I'm done with the PoE league.

Torchlight 3 was my first and only torchlight. Hated it. Loved Diablo 1-3 will buy torchlight 2 and give it a go.

I have the game but. its still fun. its just a game anyways. so you have to enjoy it! even when it sucks. don't blame me for saying this.
It's all subjective. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't.
I would say it was tragically mismanaged, but it doesn't look like a bad game worthy of the terrible scores on steam. I guess TL fans are a fickle bunch and the devs deserve it for not having a vision so I don't really have much sympathy or anything. I picked it up for 10 bucks on my switch so hopefully it's not a complete waste and I'm not coping.
There are 37 totally different classes in Torchlight2 and none of them are in Tl3, you could have published a class every 2 years without any trouble and everything would be perfect

Actually Its a pretty good game, tl2 has a bit more variety and depth thats for sure, but this is more like torchlight 1.2, I actually liked the first torchlights feel much more than 2, 2's art direction was too washed out and plain. In terms of gameplay and combat t3 feels satisfying the hit fx and impacts are good however I agree the flashier fx are poorly done blood looks like a 90's drawing.
If the game looks good and I like the gameplay, that's enough for me. This game delivers just that like the two that came before it.

I believe that was the original intention, based on the systems and interface/UI. (played it back during the Beta or Alpha, before they changed it from Frontiers to III) And now with Torchlight Infinite, it's full on a phone game. I don't think there will ever be a good Torchlight game after Runic went away.

I have thousands of hours in PoE and D2, but if you spent 300 on this game, I respect your opinion. Most people play torchlight games 1 or 2 times for the campaign and never touch the game again.

Yeah, something about it I never liked. The graphical detail of it was better than TL2, but the style of it always put me off, almost like everything was made of clay.

I was unaware it was illogical to avoid going anywhere near a company "which has had so many pr disasters (plural) in the last few years, you could make a five-hour documentary on them." If it were one mistake, I could see that as being unreasonable, but Blizzard has made so many fumbles relative to their successes that it simply isn't worth paying attention to them anymore, especially given the number of games in my backlog.
Also, what does my presumed opinion on US politics have to do with my risk aversion towards a video game company? Attempting to drag real-world nonsense where it doesn't belong didn't help people's perception of your opposition, and it's not going to help you or any cause you claim to fight for.
