Finding the Best ARPG Ever Made: Fate

- There are some big games out there, the kind that everyone loves to chat about. And then there's Fate, a game that seems like it should belong in the bargain bin, but proves that it deserves a moment in the spotlight. Mostly because it's weirder than the average bear.
Thanks for watching! Boy oh boy, the ARPG series continues to grow, with more games I constantly want to show, I hope you liked, I hope you enjoyed, please comment and subscribe, or I might get annoyed! (I'll stop rhyming now, sorry).
As always, a massive THANK YOU, to my Patrons. You are all the best of the best! / seergames
Shocked and appalled he made it all the way without mentioning fishing ONCE. Shame it's such a grind to get the Cheesehat.
Ahhhh FISHING, I must admit, it's not the first thing I do in ARPGs. When I get back to the game, it'll be the first thing I do lol
@@seer6251 I saw the flawless widow pet a few times so I thought you just fished and didn't talk about it tbh.
My brain is broken so if my run isn't going well I just mindlessly fish for 30-45 minutes to farm enough gold.
I've been having a difficult time with fishing. I don't remember it being this inconsistent when I was 8.
@@justiceforjoggers2897 I wonder if it's framerate shenanigans. I'm also getting very inconsistent results but I recall some animations being slower than others and requiring you to wait a second before pulling.
For real. you don't need to enter the dungeon to gear up, buy fishing rod, farm town pond, sell trash, upgrade best in slot after hours of farming, profit.
Fate, the game where you spend three days fishing and become a god. Oh, and the Inheritance mechanic is real cool. Take a basic weapon and pass it down a few generations and suddenly you have excalibur.
Don't do it with a weapon. Use a ring or a low level belt or something. Those are cheap to enchant and you can gamble up some extremely broken gear. High level weapons are super expensive to enchant if you do it more than once or twice. A ring you can enchant two dozen times and luck out and get a laundry list of good stats longer than your entire screen. The higher level you are the more broken stats you can get. If you pass that down a couple of times you suddenly have a ring that quadruples your health, makes you run twice as fast, hit twice as a fast, life steals 20%, adds a lot of damage to a particular weapon type, reduces damage by 30% etc.
@@soylentgreenb Fair nuff. I may even have done that. Been a long time since I've played it seriously. I remember plenty, but certainly not everything I've done.
Once I had 20+ playthroughs because I passed down and enchanted an amulet which, at the end, gave me 14.000%+ attack and movement speed and some 15.000 bonus to whatever weapon class. LMFAO, good old times. After like the 5th playthrough, one playthrough took me about 30 minutes, I used cheat codes to bring me down like 1000 levels, got some even more busted gear (monsters were an easy kill thanks to my busted stats), then rinse and repeat. In all fairness, I love the game, its music and simplistic art- and gameplay style, I still play it and Undiscovered Realms to this very day.
Torchlight was led by Travis Baldree, designer of Fate, joined by Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer (co-designers of Diablo and Diablo II)
Oh so thats why it has Torchlight pet and fame system.
Yeah, i was just going to say, torchlight got made by the fate+diablo1/2 teams.
And yet lacks all the charm
So that's where the pet came from...
Did a pretty poor job on it.
i remember getting our first computer from a Frys Electronics as a kid, and there was some game launcher preinstalled onto it already and it had a demo for FATE. We played that demo over and over and over for hours even though all you could do was go to like level 3?? loved this game, i thought having a dog with you that could go to town and sell your stuff was the absolute coolest thing ever at the time lmao
I remember doing the same thing, and then one day I found that it was on Steam, and got to relive some of my childhood.
I did the exact same thing and the game launcher for me was pop cap
YUPYUPYUP
i wonder how many of us here share similar stories? I did the same exact thing as a kid lol that demo was amazing

Running around and picking up trash while hoping I wont die is what I do every day.
This was my first ARPG. Back when I was like 10 and didn't even know what that meant.
It's always held onto a small piece of my heart throughout the years, as it was the first time me and my mother played a game together and bonded over one of my interests. It was a great time.
Also this is literally the first time I have seen a video of it on RUclips, and possibly and possibly the first reference ever that I did not go searching for.
Thank you for taking me back to my childhood.
Edit: I JUST saw the other comment of someone else playing it with their mother back in the day. What about FATE brings the moms to the yard??
My whole family played fate back when i was 8 and we all loved it
Fate will always remain a dear place in my heart for getting me into the fantasy RPG genre, i’m hoping to become a game dev to make something in honor to homage this masterpiece from my childhood
Edit; Guess i’m the black sheep here, my mother didn’t care for video games and in fact anything that involved fighting or killing she despised
Another member of the Fate with mom squad!
Everything you said is right it all happened with me too
I found FATE when I was like 7, but the dungeons were too scary for me, so I had my mom help me. Eventually, the both of us got really into the game.
We wanted to play together, so we moved on to World of Warcraft
I used to play this game at my freinds like...11 ish years ago and have been searching for its name ever since.
One could say it was .. fate .. that you saw this video! Heh. Heh heh… heh..
Ok I’ll see myself out
@@gusgair6509 No you sit right where you are, your in the right place

I found my old physical copy a couple months ago that I bought back in high school in 2005 from WalMart. Still works!
@@Xeonort dude im glad for yoy
@@elvenatheart982 I appreciate that. It's always a treat to get a blast from the past like that.
I used to play this game so much back in the day, like 2006. I begged my parents to buy it for me on Wildtangent and would play so much that I bricked my dad's old laptop because it overheated lol. Recently picked it up on steam and reliving the glory days
U and me both… u and me both
I remember having to use these WildTangent coins in order to play the game (the sound of the coin goin in was satisfying) but I still played the sh*t out of this game back then.
Just like you I recently got the Steam version after suddenly remembering this game, I honestly had no idea it was on Steam but it was an instant buy, I'm currently playing the sh*t out of it again after more than 15 years, good times.

If you like alliteration then you should try out the Dragon Quest series. They use them all the time.

Multiple times in my childhood we were trapped in Sam's Club whilst my grandma teleported around the store gathering 3 cart-fulls of stuff.
Me and my brother would spend almost the entire time hitting up every free sample stand and then playing Fate on the demo laptops, which were all preloaded with the WildTangent Games Launcher.
When I got a little older I scrounged up money and bought the physical copy of Fate: The Cursed King, figured out how to use console command cheats, and had an absolute blast.
Loads of good memories. Can still vividly recall the looping title screen music of The Cursed King.
I love that so many people (myself included) had this game be their first ARPG because of a family laptop having the WildTangent launcher pre-installed on it.
Also, shout-out to World of Goo.
This game was a complete and utter fever dream I could only play because of some weird free trial in a bizarre game platform on my Toshiba laptop. Recently found said laptop and finally found the name of the game and started playing it. Found out it was just Diablo but bizarre.
Wildtangent, old games platform responsible for Polar Bowling…

A bunch of sites that are responsible for making childhoods fun are long forgotten, I try to find them…
I lost it when the rant at 12:30 went on with just overlapping voiceovers. So well done :D
FATE was actually my first ARPG! I remember like 15 years ago some game launcher came installed on my mother's new laptop and I played it while we were staying with my grandparents. I really liked the game, but never looked into it later or found it again since even though it was the first of many ARPGs I've played. I didn't expect Seer to cover it heheh.

I really loved the fact your adding the OST's ID'S on top ahahha ♥
Fate was made in like 3 months by a small team yet it still kicks ass i spent so much time playing the demo back in the day.
You could only level till 7 and only go 3 levels deep but i loved it
Fate was the first game where I got to play Hackerman. If I recall you can tinker with pretty much the entire game just by editing some text files that are fairly intuitive. When I wasn't editing summon spells to summon my favorite mobs, I was creating ridiculous weapons or changing the monsters to be incredibly tiny. Good times. :^)
I played the free demo version of this so much, back when HP computers came with the wild tangent game store
Ive been playing this game since 2009 and still play it when I just wanna playing something relaxing. Still one of my favorite games.
I loved this one when i was a kid. I remember buying a boxed copy at a discount store (giant tiger), getting home so excited to try it, and it ACTUALLY RUNNING on my garbage computer. I loved the fishing and getting the cool abilities, that part always seemed the most unique of the series.
I literally have no idea why I still love this game so much. Possibly the endless nature of it is what intrigued me so much
I used to play this game for hours, this brings back memories. Please play more
Fate is literally my first ARPG. This video brings back so much nostalgia.
Im just happy you played the game, I used to save scum while enchanting my weapons and armor until I got the best stats for them. I personally think its the best way to play the game cause you can get aforementioned “god slayers” by just enchanting but its expensive and can take a while. Tips for you seer:
-dont invest into attack magic that much. Most of the spells are bad except for a select couple like muffle. Defense magic and charm magic are overpowered and are worth investing in. (This only changes late endgame which no one has the time or patience for)
-Summon builds are cool but can be countered if your enemy has dispel summons or muffle.
-Shield builds provide your best shot at melee survival.
-Ranged builds are IMO better than melee because its easier to avoid large damage and can hit off screen.
-Get enough vitality so you never run out of stamina.
-Beware mind beasts.
-Fish. There is a fishing spot in town as well as spots in dungeons where you can just fish and get random stuff.
-Your pet in FATE 1 is basically useless, but there are a couple of fish that can transform your pet to at least be able to cast helpful spells.
-FATE wasn’t meant to be played on the hardest difficulty first. The real endgame of FATE (which no one gets to because not a lot of people know what the endgame even is) is retiring and passing down an heirloom item so many times that it becomes stupidly broken and you then deep delve with said god slayer.
Bro I remember sinking literal HOURS just into the demo as a kid. It was basically a rogue like in the demo.
I love this video man; this proves that you can be entertaining with just your voice and some gameplay and not needing a face cam. Great job dude
This is the one game I played more than anything with my mom when I was so really young.
My mom made me play the game " hide the sausage" it was really fun
@@EdgarStyles1234 are we supposed to laugh or something?
Never take that for granted. I would give anything just for one of my parents to play a video game with me

I am in love with this series! Just recently picked up an ARPG by the name of Chronicon. I think it's still currently on sale, or at least it was when I purchased. I'm sure it's already on your list while looking for the best but if it isn't, maybe pick it up now that it's on sale! Looking forward to next video
I'm really glad you enjoy! Chronicon is definitely on my list, looking forward to playing it myself!
@@seer6251 chronicon story is pretty shit, game is only fun for theorycrafting but has low variety
I really like it for what it is, def worth the price and dev is very cool
@@GusZiliotto so the same as every modern arpg :) I really like Chronicon, better Diablo 3 than Diablo 3.
@@mirkiekishka yeee its pretty fun to get into, late game just stale but still fun for brain off map popping
im so happy this video exists this was my favorite game as a kid and i still play it occasionally to this day. wish they would remaster it and bring it to switch!
Seer!! Stoked to see a new video up! Liking and commenting before I even watch it.
Such a cool game with some of its mechanics. I wish they made one with better graphics better art design but keep those mechanics and dungeon system and gear system.
I remember playing fate on my dad's laptop, I'll never forget the times me and my brother had one character and we were so scared of going into the dungeon especially at level 4 and upwards because the monsters were either tough or overwhelming, so we just got to level 3 and try to fish rare items and sell it to the weapons dealer, then i remember messing around with the keyboard and accidentally actived the levelup cheat 😂
As someone who grew up with FATE, you were playing wrong. On Legend difficulty, fishing is the name of the game!
Fishes fished in the dungeon can be FLAWLESS and permanently upgrade your pet! Your pet is your aggro taker! If you're running range or magic, you want your pet to be omega roided so that you can get further back and deal your damage. With magic, you gotta get that attack magic stat omega high! Or the charm magic, the cursed blades are a sick summon.
Fishing can net you artifacts (the golden items), gemstones, and accessories. And the artifacts sell for shit loads of cash.
It was so fun seeing this video existed. FATE has been a fun game for my whole family for our whole lives, and we always come back to it. There are also three more games, my favourite being the second one. This video is a treat, and I hope you don't give up on FATE just yet!
This game was made by Travis Baldree and was a Popcap game if you remember those. This was also the game he made before going on to make the first and second Torchlight games.
The best thing about this game is that If you decide you don't feel like being an adventurer anymore and instead take up fishing then you will soon become a God.
This series is by far some of the most entertaining content on RUclips.
I remember years ago my dad finally got an office job after being a self employed logger for years. I was maybe 12 at the time and his work gave him a laptop. For whatever reason this game was loaded onto the laptop. He wasnt into games at all, but knew I was getting into them. I was grinding runescape for hours back then. He let me play this on his laptop. Looking back, it was such a nice gesture.
For those wondering, the team who made Fate worked with people from the Diablo team from Diablo 1 and 2 to make the Torchlight series... so that's why they're similar, lol
I honestly still find myself returning to Fate every now and then. It's the only WildTangent I've ever purchased, and it's because of how awesome it was just playing the demo over and over again as a kid on the family computer. Definitely one of my most nostalgic games, so I'm glad it's still purchasable today!
What's even more broken is fishing up a flawless fish that permanently changed your pet into an endgame death monster
after playing some time, the meta is fishing before enter the dungeon, the 250 golds you get you can spend 200 in the fishing rod, then fish for like 15 mins and you can get very good items that can give you a lot of gold, you equip and you can go to the dungeon. once you have some money, like 100k you can craft for profit. i dont remember which items because i played like 10 years ago but you bought some bases and enchant them(with the NPCs of the town) and if you are using the correct ones, i remember using boots and lances, you can make a looooooott of gold.
I love your summary of this game as "a sandbox ARPG full or random crap."
I played the demo for this game as a kid, and recently finished the game as an adult. And I can verify everything you said in this video is true.
The music of this game is chef kiss. It comes from old medieval music composed by Turlough
HOLY, this video just unlocked a core memory for me, I remember playing this when i was young.
Some of the Later entries in the Fate Series is quite good. TRAITOR soul was a banger
I remember playing Fate a long time ago, I might have to get it again. Great game. Edit a month later... I bought it from steam and I still love the Fate games.
Modded the hell out of this game back in the day. At one time all the WoW monsters were actually imported into Fate! There was a 'Teenager' mod that made the character look more like Link and less like a dwarf. Multiplayer would have made this game more epic... Good times. Brain makes the best pet!
Didn't realize until now that Torchlight ripped off Fate, even the Heritage Item System. Great video as always!
That's because it's the same devs working under a new (well new when TL was released) studio
@@ambridge6645 Actually, I can imagine many things.
dude your playing LEGENDARY, of course its gonna be dang near impossible, am i missing something??
Yeah Fate was made by the same people that created Torchlight. Also there's like a bunch of sequels to Fate If I remember correctly.
Yooo this was my true intro to games. I found it as a free trial on my PC, and played all day and night until the trial ended. When I was older and was given surprise birthday money for the first and last time, I bought Fate: The Cursed King and Age of Empires. My sister and I played every day after school until my parents would flip out. I found the game today in a bin of DVDs after watching the Dungeons and Dragon's movie (made me think of it) and played it for the first time in years!! It is still so good. And the first thing I did was fish and get rich
I have a fast weapon that does 130 average 92% attack speed and 37% lifesteal. This is the most fun I've ever had
Seeing this was like a blast from the past. The first ARPG game I ever played as a child. This game sparked my love for ARPGs, it was my favorite.
The fishing system is the answer. Feeding your pet allows you to transform them, temporarily, into a monster. All kinda of different monsters. You're not doing well, because you only had your pet transformed one single time that you've shown. Fish. Some transformations increase your pet's attack speed by 1200% and increase their damage by 800%.
I played a demo of this YEARS ago
I remember fishing to transform my dog into an overpowered dire wolf, gargoyle, and a dragon
I need to buy a computer so I can buy and play this, I’m so crazy about this game so I can re live the memories
Recently got back into it and spamming fish to my pet on the lower difficulties works like a charm in the beginning game
The crazy thing about fate is that I did play it for a bit, then later something called torchlight came out and I was like wait a minute this is fate with new paint.
this was the first pc game i ever played back in 2005 and just started it again. such a blast of the past i still love the game.
Seer, your line "It's time to be Benjamin Franklin" made me actually cough up something and I think I need to get checked at the hospital. I'll send you the bill. Great video btw.
I remember playing this as a kid, going past 100 encountering some big ass dragons, always using the crossbow with knockbacks.
Hey back in 2005 this was legendary
There’s a nice magic tool to make that activation message go away.
Dang, you're right. Fate is like Torchlight 0.999999. Actually a little embarrassed for the Perfect World team tbh.
fate is a weird great game, fondly remembering the late game. definitely missed the fishing that can let your pet really tank, which helps a ton. things scale really strongly in this game which is fun
Your videos are hilarious, man. Going to go through them all. I love all these games so that certainly helps
Looks to me like someone didn't bother fishing. the reason that matters: fishing can get you transformation items that you feed to your pet to transform them into monster varietie that hange up their attcks and make the standard cat or dog incredibly powerful. for example, Giant spiders, birds, brain beast.
Found this title while being deployed in Iraq surprisingly I couldn't put it down off mission. Legit one of the best arpgs ever released.
I’ve been waiting for your next video!! Excited to watch!
my best friend in high school had a demo of this game on his family computer. Ten years later, I found it cheaply on steam and bought it.
fate has always been one of my favorite games
ive been playing it since i was about 7 or 8 on the family computer and ive been playing all the fate games ever since
I'm really enjoying this series, hope you keep it going.
so yeah... the best item to use for inheritance is a ring or necklace, as it has no item requirements and makes you slap like a truck after you abuse the enchantment system to get a godring with like 30 effects and a socket. plus, once you hit about floor ten on legendary, with about 10k gold you can buy the unenchanted gear from the smith vendor that has medals or stars on it, turn it purple or teal at the penguin dude, and make gold off of it. reload the game, rinse repeat for infinite money.
alt tabbing and using task manager to close the game whenever you get a bad enchant is also busted, works on fate statues, learning altars, and dungeon anvils as well if you quit to menu then reload before using them.
for godrings: you put a gem on it, then after inheriting it over to the new character, you strip it off and it keeps the gained stat, minus the base stat of the gem. like adding a superior jade adds 15% attack speed onto it, inherit it, goes up to 20%, remove the superior jade to be left with 5% attack speed and an open gem slot you can use to add another stat for the next time.
Fate was one of the first games my brother and i learned how to abuse game mechanics in, alongside the woodcutter huts in Stronghold Crusader not having enemy proximity placement limitations. Now, every game that comes out has patches that leech the fun out of games. Fate was a good one when all you had was $5 and you stumbled on it in the gamestop bargain bin, expecting garbage and finding gold.
One time I got the cheese hat randomly as a kid without realizing what I actually had.
Basically Diablo for kids. It’s an old gem regardless from my childhood.
You missed out three major things. Fishing is extremely OP and you often get legendaries or permanent enhancements for your pet that really matters in the beginning of the game.
The enchanter penguin dude can enchant your gear over and over forever until you get a bad enchant that ruins it. If you have expensive gear the price of the enchants quickly becomes insanely high, but if you get a ring or like a low level belt with 2 armor you can just keep going cheaply and end up with the most broken items imaginable. Levels improve the enchants you get, so when you are a high level player you can get really stupid enchants.
Lifesteal, attack speed and movement speed is broken. You can get a lot of it from gems and from enchants ending up moving 200% faster, hitting 10 times a second, healing your entire health bar each hit etc.
this game was a demo install on my windows vista laptop back in the day is kinda nostalgic for me also was fun to play when i didnt have access to internet
I grew up with this game. Loved it and the music was so good.
This game is a fucking fever dream for me. Played it when I was little and could never find it again. Even a decade later. Always got directed to fable every time I tried to find it.
I love your videos man, hilarious super interesting and super well edited all at the same time haha keep up the great work man your stuff is great cant wait for the next one
Thank you!
I remember this game as a kid. I loved it. My favorite thing to do was feed my dog fish to change him into other animals.
I used to play fate a shit ton on my first computer when I was like 6 years old miss it
Probably where my love of terrible balance and exploiting comes from
This and borderlands
Please make a sequel to all the fate games, they were part of my childhood, and all your commentary was completely accurate :D
God damn love Fate. Such a charming and nostalgic game. Thank you for talking about something I thought no one knew about
It is possible to fish up legendary items in grove, sell them and save scum with the gambler until you get items that boost your magic, strength, or dex etc to 100+ and can use endgame gear before even entering the dungeon lol. Still loved this game back in the day and I actually bought the entire steam bundle a few days ago and have been playing it to much enjoyment again. I'm actually excited to try out the sequels.
I am glad im not the only person who has played this. Played it when It came out as a demo and bought it.
I have so man hours poured into this game a I bought it on steam to relive my windows xp gaming childhood. In my current run through I have some insane gear, I'm like 10 levels from the boss one and once I beat the boss I'm gonna be level rushing cause down in the hundreds and past level 1000 you can find some really broken gear and it turns you into a 1 shot machine who also can be 1 shot. You just gotta run from enemies with bow or reflect that far down. Getting 100% reflect is very hard but if you can do it you will be unstoppable.
Also spells can be very good if you stack enough points into your skills. Want insane summons? Put points into charm skills, want a big ass fireball, ice, ect? Put points into attack magic. Want to be able to run super fast, swing at insane speeds, and reflect damage? Put points into defense battle skills.
I think the unironic best part is FATE lets you carry a character over to the next game over and over, so it's more your own personal journey.
My mom used to love this game!!! No one remembered what it was called.
i used to play this on Wild tangent. Then i realized they also had it on steam i re-purchached all of them on steam. I LOVE this game!
Right on the money, Fate was indeed the predecessor to Torchlight.
You got up to level like 5 for free then it charged. One of the single best games as an child. Charging in on very hard and finding it very hard is very silly
IVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE FOR THIS I REMEMBER THIS WHEN I WAS A KID
“At these prices…it’s practically stealing.”
From me :(
Played this on my mom's laptop many years ago.
The interesting part is that it used some Microsoft arcade thing, and you can spend credits for...well something or other. It's been too long so I forget. Maybe it was that you could redeem a couple games and this was one of em, I dunno.
The idea of this being a free(?) game Included with the PC made it feel so much more special though. Like imagine this being the space pinball of ARPGs.
I think you're talking about WildTangent, with the whole credits thing
Fate was the predecessor of the Torchlight series. In fact Fate was the first incarnation of what became later Torchlight. At the time Fate was very fun! Especially if you have a good pet!
Hey Seer, I’ve always made the comparison of the graphics of this fame with suikoden tierkreis, they look so uncanningly similar
Honestly, i know they flush it out more in the other 3 Fate Games, but you're pet plays a huge role. Fishing changes it into the same mobs you fight, with various lengths up to and including permanent. You can also use your pet to sell things in town while you're in the dungeon, but that might not have been in the first Fate. Been awhile since I played myself.
