Bruh you can tell something's happening in the dubbing department, there's a massive drop in quality after Lost Judgment and apparently they don't do lip sync anymore?
Yeah I was told it was bad in the Infinite Wealth demo and obviously it's here too. Very concerning for the English Dubs moving forward
They have some good casting it's just either the localization, the directing or just some straight up goofs like some choices for actors as far as I know, Daigo was voiced by Sonic and he probably couldn't come back for Daigo. The lip syncing would've taken alot of time and since gaiden isn't a full game, they released it like that lol
What's weird is that it's the same director at the same studio that's done all of the dubs so far since Judgment. I can't speak for IW, but I'd imagine that lack of lip sync and some recasts like Daigo in Gaiden was just a case of it being a bit of a rush job.
@@andrewkos5560 Roger (Daigo's 7 VA) was doing another Sonic game I think. And if it's the same director, he's lost a bit of his touch. Still some good casting and direction but, why is daigo out of breath and.. yong. Either what Yong said about Sega higher-ups having a say in this is true or the director is starting to fall off or just the rush job ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The issue is the localisation team doesn’t just handle SEGA/RGG games but all of ATLUS’ releases as well. The reason why Lost Judgment didn’t have lip sync after 7 was because it’s a simultaneous release. They just don’t have the time and too many projects on hand right now.
You know when someone tries to make their voice deep and rough but can't quite do it, it sounds like Yongyea performance, sounds like he is out of breath all the time because it takes too much energy to fake his voice 😅

Yongyea is not a bad voice actor. It just he doesn't sound old and there's zero roughness in his voice.
Yeah its just a matter of the wrong casting, the problem is how he reacted to some feedback. If he took it to the chin and probably was more cordial, wouldve went off more smoothly

Watase and Ichiban remains same, it's just the new cast that is sounds quite strange: Out-of-breath Daigo and not-a-Kiryu.

Hearing yongs voice is always funny to me now that he’s a big voice actor. I remember him as a bitty RUclipsr making Skyrim videos.

The lighting in 7 has secret lighting in the scenes to brighten up peoples faces.
The lighting in Gaiden uses the actual lighting in the scene.
Its why alot of scenes have different placements in the background because it actually uses the lights you see.
Darryl will be missed, also diago sounds horrible here, prefer his old voice actor

@@TheExFatal Its most likely because they couldn't get him to voice act during the time frame for Gaiden and Infinite Wealth's English releases, so they had to get another actor.
his dub in infinite wealth honestly gives me yakuza 1 dub vibes, like daigo's actor wasn't told who he was acting or what the context was. like in one scene majima and saejima are talking to kiryu normally then DAIGO IS SCREAMING AT HIM
Darryl’s Kiryu sounds like a guy who is tough, Yongyea’s sounds like someone trying to sound tough.
he's just so miscast, he doesn't sound like a man in his 50's. Yong would have been great if they did Yakuza 0 and needed a VA for him then
I’m playing Yakuza 0 for the first time. First game in the series for me. I’m about 35 hours in. It’s amazing. It’s also the first time I’ve played a game that has Japanese voice only. I actually looked for an English option when I first started. I’m so happy that it didn’t have one. The point of all of this is to say that I would NEVER ever be able to play a Yakuza game with English voices. The Japanese VAs are just so good and contrary to what I originally thought the Japanese voices immerse me in the story so much more. I thought it would take me out of it. I now need to go back and play Ghost of Tsushima with the Japanese dub (and yes I’m aware it’s originally English).
Why did they bring Darryl back after 15 years, then switch it 3 years later? I honestly feel like Darryl probably just didn't want the role anymore for whatever reason
He actually wanted to do it. But they refused because he isn't asian.

I think the issue is that a lot of these VAs can talk in a deep tone but some intonations can't be hit because their range in that section of notes isn't broad enough. Yong hits more natural high portions but can't hold the lows.
Both Daigo & Kiryu in 7 sounded better

Sega US casted him on 7 because they probably thought it was an one time thing, that Kiryu would just make a cameo and not show again anytime soon, so they didn't made a contract.
But then Gaiden and Infinite Wealth reveal trailers dropped and they got desperate, so desperate they casted SoyBoy to play him.
Ever thought Darryl said no? He's semi retired. 7 was just a cute cameo, but being MC for a full game release is probably not something he wanted to deal with.

It sounds like Yong Yea recorded this on a streamer mic remotely in an untreated room, and the original dub actually sounds well recorded on top of it just fitting the character way more.
Yong yea isn’t an awful actor, it’s just embarrassing how much he claimed to be a great Kiryu and how he earned the character when it literally just sounds like a 30 something year old streamer, when he’s a 52-53 year old former yakuza that’s been smoking cigarettes since the late 80s.
Bro what happened to the lip syncing in gaiden. Did they remove it??? Also why did they change kiryu’s va. IT WAS THE FIRST MAN TO VOICE ENGLISH KIRYU AND THEY REMOVED HIM AFTER HIS SECOND DEBUT

As someone who's a bit new to the yakuza series, are these the same game, or is one a remake? Bit confused
They're different games but it's the same scene. Like A Dragon Gaiden is a spin off that shows what Kiryu was doing during the events of Yakuza Like A Dragon.
I think the perfect English Kiryu would be a middle ground between Kurylo and Yong’s performances.

If he wasn't already voicing Saejima, I'd say Ron Yuan would make a good Kiryu.

I'm not much of a fan of Daigo's new voice, however I do much prefer the delivery of this line 2:26 from the new VA. His voice just sounds too deep in both versions though tbh.
I love Roger Craig Smith though, he could have totally pulled off a higher pitched Daigo voice similar to the Japanese voice. I wish that's what they went for instead of this weirdly deep sounding voice that doesn't really suit him.
He doesn't have the pitch, but he does a way better job of matching Japanese Daigo's flat affect which I think is more important. I was surprised how many people seemed to love RCS as Daigo, he felt totally miscast in a similar way to Yong.
They replaced Roger Craig Smith for Daigo, by the way

My favorite part of this scene besides Kiryu returning is that Watase is trying to bullshit, "i don't know what you're talking about, he's just some body guard i hired. I couldn't even tell you his name." lol!
I like how in LAD daigo sounds like he was suprised that kiryu is still alive

If I remember correctly that's because the localization team changed after Yakuza LAD. For Yakuza LAD and I *think* Judgment they resynced the mouth movemenets for the English dub but in Lost Judgment, Gaiden, and IW they didn't do that
@@AntonioRedgrave which is really unfortunate. I was hoping that mouth movement for english dub from LAD will continue to every game by RGG but unfortunately not.
Lip syncing isn't available for prerendered cutscenes. Only in game cutscenes. This could be due to cost and/or time constraints.

A shame it doesn't have new game plus. But the english dub is the excuse i needed to replay it, YongYea sounds a little bit better than the Infinite Wealth demo but i don't think i'll ever get used to it, it's an horrible casting but I'll mindset myself that it's a fandub mod i just downloaded
It's definitely weird becsuse they were using it more in recent titles, however it looks like they're doubling down on the whole "pay for NG+" thing for IW, which is very unfortunate considering it's something that *should* be in the game for free.

Switching Kiryu's english voice right after Yakuza: Like a Dragon was confusing as hell, aside from Yong Yea not being much of a singer as I really noticed in Machine Gun-Kiss.
I always liked Darryl Kurylo's voice as Kiryu the best since the original version of the first Yakuza game.
Honestly they both good. I like the old one more, but the new pne also sounds good

Well it sounds like when you dub over anything live action from Japan. Like it doesn’t fit totally. The first voice had mote strength to it.
Why is Gaiden that goddamn dark? I had to play it with much more brightness to even SEE something. And the voices are both ok.
Ok now that i tested it, here's the Karaoke songs:
The ones he actually sounds ok:
-True-Hearted Samurai (probably because the original already has auto-tune)
-Baka Mitai (practically anyone can sing this song, it's very low pitch and easy)
The ones he butchered:
- Sayonara Silent Night (The chorus has some high notes that he tries to hit but it hurts your ears)
- Hands (probably the worst one, you have to listen YongYea trying to hit high notes with autotune for three minutes)
- Tonight (this one they didn't even mixed his audio right, the autotune is so high i rage quit)
- Like a Butterfly (Akame's voice is really good, though in the chorus her timing is all wrong. YongYea did good on most of the song, but in the end he tries to do that high ''OH YEEEAAAHHH'' that Ichiban does and ruins everything)
The karaoke machine just should have an option for the language everytime.. I mean, it is visibly there, make it functional...
For Like a Butterfly, it's just the male lyrics that are horrible in English, the phrasing is bad. Over all there's some good parts but some bad, some of the lyrics aren't that good though
Okay, so we complained about YongYea, and the performance is hit or miss... But can we talk about Daigo's new voice? Because that's another downgrade
At least I'm glad that Mercer still voices Majima, and still does a decent job of it
I was so happy when I found out Majima was voiced by both Matt Mercer now and Mark Hamill in the OG Yakuza dub.

To be fair, I do think Darryl's voice is a little too deep with a little too much vocal fry, but it does fit Kiryu better than Yong Yea's voice.

I don’t like like a dragon (love the yakuza franchise but dislike the rpg games) but it’s feel very respectful that’s we got the ps2 english voice actor for kazuma back for it.

Yongyea sounds much more like the original Japanese voice. The first one sounds too “American.” I think they made a mistake to cast Darryl just because he was the original voice of Kiryu for the very first Yakuza.
Man, I feel like neither of them are fitting for Kiryu. It's like one is too young without any rought voice/experience and the other is way too rough with its voice. It'd have been perfect if it was smth in the middle.

To be fair, the English dub for Yakuza 7 actually has lip syncing specifically for English while Gaiden doesn't. That doesn't have anything to do with their performances, that's just an unfortunate handicap Yong had to deal with
@@AntonioRedgrave Right, but that opens up another issue: this game didn’t release with the dub and had time to properly lip-sync cutscenes.
Now the in-game cutscenes are synced but not the pre-rendered, which is odd because this specific cutscene is animated over an already existing cutscene which HAS English lip-sync.
Sorry to rant but it feels lazy to me, I know it’s just a spin-off and all (I also just don’t like Yong’s portrayal of Kiryu.)

I edited a version that fit the scene better a month before this came out for the mod i made. I was able to make it fit a bit better so I think he paused until Kiryu was on screen where as in 7, it starts before Kiryu is on screen.

Okay but Kiryu isn't the only miscast here... Majima's VA is doing a great performance here, but he'd be way, way better fit if Sega wanted to say, go back and give LaD 0 an English dub. I genuinely think he's fuckin' _killing_ the character, he's just another dude who sounds way too young lmao.
The worst part of this is the lack of english lip flaps in Gaiden forcing YY to speed through his lines. Given some time to let his lines breathe it'd be a pretty decent performance.
i'm gonna be honest. none of them sound good compared to the jp voiceover. i don't think either one's better than another, i just don't enjoy both of them equally.

Yeah Darryl was better no doubt. His voice just sounds so gruff gritty and worn out like the old man that Kiryu is. If Kiryu spoke English I think that voice would be fitting.
Yong Yea's just sounds to young and youthful, he might make a good younger Kiryu if they ever dub the earlier games in English, but his voice lacks the deep tone and the gruff and grittiness that Darryl's voice possesses.
Personally I've never liked the English dub in Yakuza games. It just sounds weird. I always play with Japanese audio and English subtitles.
Darryl's voice was way better than Yong Yea...i really can't get to grips with Yong Yea's voice for Kiryu. It doesn't justify Kiryu in the English Dub.

Yong is fine. Definitely better here than the initial demo drop. Darryl will be missed, but not much we can do about that.
Daigo though, not a fan. Apparently, Roger Craig Smith was too busy so we got (looks up) Tim Friedlander. No I haven't heard of him either.
For Daigo, you can’t get big names for everyone the first time around and expect them to stay the whole time. Sometimes they get too busy or expensive. When casting, you have to give smaller VAs a chance eventually.
The original is so much better, it has a certain feel to it, sounds like experience, Yong was the wrong choice.
This is beyond ridiculous man, everybody talking in the trailer would've been a better fit for Kiryu. What a major disappointment, I've never been so pissed for a miscast

I played Like A Dragon Gaiden in the dub and his voice acting is very overhated. It's not the best and he could have done better but to say he "Ruined Kiyru" is too much
Yongyea dead ass ruined both Gaiden and Infinite Wealth dubs for me, man. Which sucks because I prefer the english Ichiban over the original. He does not fit the role of Kiryu. I wanted to give it a chance too.
If they just brought back the old actor or hired someone with more range.
Now that i played LGG and abt to start yakuza 7, they missed out with bringing Darryl back.
I gave Yong a chance but he didnt deliver and i only stuck to play LGG in dub bcs of James C. Burns. Bottom line SEGA and RGG fucked up with the casting for kiryu lol.
My friend just said he liked yong'w voice acting. (We're not friends anymore)
