- Sailing the Caribbean nealy got us killed. We rescued a sailboat from the Domincan Republic and got it to what we thought was seaworthy enough, but EVERYTHING went wrong.

That marina really fucked you guys. It seems like the workers only “spent the day with you” to save face since they saw you recording; all repair bills were paid, but the only working part of the boat was that it could float.
The workers were ok. It's the higher ups... But ya, pretty much everything else broke at sea...

yes, and it is the captains responsibility to check the technical side of the boat. I would never go out without at least two functional bilge pumps and I would check the tanks in advance. The one has condensed water in it and the other the black death of diesel. Engine failure? Before going out the engine shall run for at least 1 hr until it is on temperature. Then you would have mentioned that a hose is leaking. Things that have to be checked before one goes out to sea. Yes, you almost died due to the incompetence of the one who was in charge.
Hey Moser. The captain OF COURSE checked the tanks days before we left. He had both of them drained completely because of what he found and personally polished them both clean. He filled them at the dock in the Marina with what should have been fresh diesel. He changed both raycors and ran the engine for an hour. It seemed fine and safe before we left. The Raycors didn't get dirty and the hose didn't pop off completely until well after we left the marina.
The vessel was checked in every regard before leaving. The engine was run for more than an hour, and operated without failure, also with boat yard mechanics on board to verify their work.
All bildge pumps, as well as manual pump were tested and functioning.
Fuel tanks were cleaned, and all filters changed. Tank was pressed with fresh new fuel from Marina.
Steering and all rigging was also inspected and was without flaw before leaving port.
Looks like a Captain Ron movie which was a cruisers classic of a bunch of people that don't know what they are doing. I spent a lot of time in that harbour in the 90s. Trashed boat waiting for someone to come get a dream. Have seen this storyline countless times before there even was a boat yard.
Really cool content. Maybe dial back the drama a bit. The reason cable died is bc of this type of editing. Delos could be sinking and the crew would still be like “it’s not a big deal”.
Thanks for the feedback. It’s a fine line for sure. It was genuinely scary every day. I thought about not wanting to bail on my grandkids. There’s also the line of slow and boring so no one watches… still working on it.

I can see why you’d think that, but we did all we could to prep the boat for a week Chris. It was supposed to be ready when we got there. Many of the problems didn’t reveal themselves till we were at sea.
Also, the captain is extremely competent and can sail her alone. And has.
Truly amazing. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and a pleasure to drive you to your Smoky Mountain Trail.

Lol, the drama! The “permission to leave” that was required from the marina is called paying your bill. Next time I’m at a restaurant I’m gonna ask for “permission to leave” instead of the check. 😂
Our engine!! Sounds like it at least.... was it the gearbox leaking water into the oil?
After about a week, we learned that the marina that was supposed to fix the engine, dropped a gasket into the bilge for the oil line, right by the turbo.
Considering all the damage I would’ve tried to get the price lowered. Too many repairs you all had to worry about.
Volvo used make great sail drive engines.

Pretty sure the engine is good. It's just the repairs were done poorly by the marina. For example, on an oil line they dropped a gasket in the bilge - we found out the hard way at sea. Was gushing oil.

Nope. My friend was hired to sail the boat back to the states for the owner, and invited my along for a pleasured cruise. It was supposed to be ready to go. It wasn't. So we spent a week fixing and testing it. When we left, we thought we'd fixed evertying that mattered. At sea, the shoddy work done by the marina smacked us in the face.
The skipper was a bit pushy 😂

You put all the persons on that boat at risk; captains look for safety first and have control over their vessel running conditions, and equally important is looking after the safe weather conditions before sailing out to sea.
This video is a detailed testimony of the huge mistake and lack of experience of the person in charge also is a cowardly justification for mentioning a Dominican Republic regulation that does not exist.

That was my first trip like that ever. I'm not a captain, just crew there for what I thought was gonna be fun. Because the boat had been there for some time, we literally could not leave without a despacho - marina and navy had to approve. I haven't read the law, but that's what we had to do to leave.
The boat was supposed to be ready to rock when we got there. But it was not. So instead of setting sail we spent a week fixing the boat. We checked everything, That captain had the fuel tanks drained and personally polished them. We ran the engine. The amenities - like fridge and stove - were down, but it appeared to be seaworthy. Once out at sea, the failures of the marina's repairs started appearing.
Just one example: it was leaking a lot of oil. We eventually figured out what happened. An oil line was missing a gasket. Like no gasket there. We found it by accident when dredging the bilge. They had dropped it, couldn't reach it, and just reattached with no gasket.
Eventually we did all bail before the boat reached the states for safetfy reasons, as more and more problems arose at sea.
But, based on a short video, I can see what you'd think what you did.

I’ve been on a bass boat and pontoon, never a sailboat…I live in Kentucky. I’m sure y’all were under a lot of stress, but the trip was absolutely beautiful. I’ve never see water so clear. Happy to see everything worked out. ❤
